  • Advocates for AI defend it as manageable and say the risks are marginal, and the rewards life-improving, by empowering more people with instant information. But critics warn about transparency gaps and power disparities, including a slippery slope into a digital apocalypse where superintelligent machines surpass humans’ ability to control them. Watch as four experts weigh in on the future of AI.

    23:00 Zuckerberg said he wasn't comfortable sharing it with the room but it was implied that his company when it has such information about others would share it with advertisement companies and others who have paid him for it! That others also do not wish him to share their personal information with AI data filtering algorithms. Regardless of the permission to do so being given under agreement via terms and condition.

    The government are not the philosophers who are not the programmers. The government orders for engineering and development in this sector is a few decades old now. The development teams are not about to hire philosophers to debate restrictions on their code slowing development. Slow development is bad for business against the bottom line, profit. It removes a company from the race for growth. So the ethics of AI is out of the loop of development.

    • @Nikki-en6kd
      @Nikki-en6kd 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is precisely the problem. They should build the laws for AI advancements, ethically as a framework with/alongside the technology as a framework for the protection of society and its citizens. But the "race for growth" priority in AI technical advancement is not simply for the betterment of humanity... it is and has always been, the priority to win the "race for the money and power" OF the system advancements IN ORDER TO control/take advantage of the citizens (which has to be without their knowledge) - otherwise it would not work. Frog in the pot of slowly boiling water scenario 👍🏼

    I am African and a student of Computer Science. I appreciate the points brought up in this debate but I do not feel that it tackled the technical issues of machine learning or any of AI safety and morality research which I hoped to hear. It was more of a political debate which is just as important but in a sense dissatisfying for the audience. As for the problem of bias in AI systems, I think we blacks especially need to stop complaining and start building technologies that reflect our demographic and values. You cannot have a person build a technology based on his/her culture and expect it to reflect yours. We need to come together; the smart and industrious young minds of Africa and build technologies that suit our values and stop depending on the western world for innovation and then complain when these technologies are biased. It is true that there are some socio-political and economic obstacles in our way as well as international control/ subjugation and the aftermath of exploitations that setback our continent; but I believe we can get past that and build our continent if we as Africans are ready to cooperate in the sciences, tech and business rather than politics and activism. This goes for black America as well.

      I totally agree with you. She pointed out saying that the resume automation ranked resume of women down. I am sure that she is stating facts with bias. An ML algorithm would definitely not completely fit to that criteria. If the stats say that men (with certain other parameters) are better than women (with certain parameters), then it’s not the algorithm to be blamed. It might be the hard truth.
      Second point, with respect to black face tracking. It’s high time they categorise it into racial discrimination. ML algorithms are in initial stages and if the data had more white faces, then you can’t blame! I am brown BTW and that’s my view.

    We shouldn't complain or blame A.I. if it did not give the expected outcome that you we are looking for and conclude that using A.I. will just amplify bias or increase risks of danger to society.
    When you work on a project you should already know what your goals are and what you expect from the project to fulfill these goals. You define which results are acceptable, which are not, and which part we can make a compromise and so on.
    It's the decision makers who answer this questions are the people we need to be in check and not blame these gaps to using A.I.
    I strongly believe that government should work with tech experts to define policies that will make sure A.I. will be used as tool to help/assist humans instead of it being a risk.

    Dude! I think Nick Bostrom is the most knowledgeable and credible person here, other people are just talking about AI without defining specifically what kind AI they're talking about, of course we cant expect everyone to be experts, as AI is only at its infant stage (even experts can be clueless about their future predictions, look at the Internet in 1990s). I think it is almost impossible to predict the "long term" context because we wont know or even conceive of AIs potential (watch Sam Harris ted talk about it), because at a certain point I think AI can replicate thousands years of human evolution in a milisecond with enough computing power. I think Nick wont even know too, he answered : "We should work together", a very basic answer, merely a replacement for IDK. So I think its best to focus on short term first.

    Is there any peer reviewed objective research statics to prove, AI systems inherently biased compared to human counterparts? Will the AI in a black African country discriminate against the darker skin person to a lighter skin person or is it happen in the other way round? Should people balme AI as bias when their Politically Correct views negated by it?

      AI isn't biased. It conforms to objective reality. An objective reality that most humans refuse to come to grips with. There are obvious differences in cognitive ability and violent tendencies in population groups. AI always figures this out quickly, humans pull the plug or literally code bias into the AI logic to "equalize" it.
