30 minutes and $50 to rebuild the cleanest Grand Am in Illinois... blindfolded!

  • Not only was this car cheap, but it was the cleanest Pontiac Grand Am I have seen in decades. If that didn't make the deal attractive enough, the fact that the parts cost was under $100 and repair time was less than 30 minutes made this a no-brainer for a rebuild.

What a great little car. I reckon late 90s / early 2000s vehicles were peak motoring. Reliable, plenty of toys, but still simple enough to be fixable, fun and well built.

    • @andreyd8116

Reliable, up until it overheats on the highway and starts spewing coolant everywhere…Or the heater goes bad and the whole dash has to come out to repair…Or thousands other small ways that this “fine” example of American engineering can reliably fail. I guess, you can call it a great car if you are a mechanic because parts are cheap - GM built these by the thousands and 99% of them are in junkyards by now 😅

@@andreyd8116 Could say the same about the Jetta's/Golf's of the same era, mostly plagued with VW's infinite wisdom on electrical wiring. Or let's pick on the BMW E30's and E36 with their garbage differentials. Nothing built in the late '90's and early 2000's was free of problems. I suppose if you like the cost of ownership on German flawed ingenuity, then they were good cars.

Every time you do a GA I get nostalgic. I really liked the 92-95 GA GT - still think it was a really great looking car. I didn't care for the refreshed model but when the '99s came out I thought they were great looking as well. My parents only leased cars from the local Pontiac, Olds, Buick, GMC dealer in town and I managed to talk my mom into a new red '99 GA SE2 V6. I thought it was a rocket ship and I liked everything about it except for how often it blew tail light bulbs. Then in 3 years I talked her into upgrading to an '02 green GA GT1. Seeing this brought me back to that one. One day I'd love to have a nice one just for the memories.

Hi Scott! Another great build/videoI I love your dry humor... Just a little information that has saved me multiple hrs in buffing and polishing. I used to work at an agricultural mfg company as the maint. mgr and therefore had a parking spot on the side of the building. I drove a 2019 1500 Cajun Red Silverado that always seemed to have water spots baked into the clear coat. They were especially bad on the hood & roof. I own a carwash and used everything at my disposal to try and get the spots off. Spots were even on the glass. Nothing worked other than polishing or buffing them off until I got the idea to use Wink Rust Remover. I use about a half sheet of a paper towel folded to about a 1-2" square and saturate it with the rust remover and gently wipe over any area with spots in a circular motion. You might need to wipe over the same spot a few times, but it will remove all embedded spots with no streaking or anything with virtually no effort. It takes no time at all to cover the entire vehicle if needed. I have used this method ever since on both of our vehicles. I always assumed that something from the workplace was causing the spots when it rained? I am since retired and don't get non-removable spots anything like that anymore. Wink Rust Remover is found at WalMart, Amazon etc. I think it was developed to remove rust stains from clothing? I've never tried it for that purpose. lol Just thought your detailing gnome might be interested?

I had a '98 Grand Am GT 2 door 5 speed Manual with a 2.4 4 cylinder. That car was fun to drive even though it only was a 4 banger ,it had great pickup and takeoff speed. Tbh ,I would rather have that engine over the 3100 V6. The V6 had a lot of issues with intake gasket failure ,as well the notorious soft aluminum heads that where the rocker arms would pop off because the bolts would strip out. I had that issue with a 2003 Grand Prix.

For a quick life hack regarding your seat cushions, if you want to get them to fluff back up quickly and not wait for the sun to warm them up, use a steamer on them. They’ll return to their original shape immediately.

That car looks brand new. The insurance company totaled my grand am because of a fender bender. I took the 2000 dollars and replaced the fender myself. Kept the car.

I did rebuild a couple of them with success, the problem in Québec Canada is getting insurance on them, very few company want to cover them. Another problem is that we need to install new seat belts and airbags if needed. Love your chanel.

Thanks for sharing! You could start a new channel where all you do is wash your cars and Id be there; Its a cathartic process for a lot of us and part of the reason I love working on cars.

Great cars, mine has 222,000 miles snd still going. I hacked together the rocker to repair them but its bwtter than no rockers lol, seat up and down doesn't work vut doesnt matter to me i need it all the way down, head gaskets leak from the heads but doesn't overheat or mix with oil. Best car ive owned.
