Rebuilding a totaled 1993 Mustang GT convertible with engine damage.

- We don't find too many clean fox body Mustangs around Chicago anymore so when this one came up for auction, I jumped at it. It is one of the most desirable years for the fox body as it has some 1993 only options and was the last year before the SN95s came out. This one took a pretty good hit in the front end and the airbag deployed. It was listed as a stationary no-start with engine damage so let's see what it will take to make it run.

I had a ‘90 GT convertible. I bought it used. It had an auto transmission. I drove it home and ordered everything I needed to put in a World Class T-5 transmission, 3:55 rear gears, subframe connectors, under hood shock tower triangular brace, ‘95 Mustang five bolt front spindles, 5 bolt rear axles, larger throttle body and cold air kit. It was a way different car than the one I drove home when I bought it. No engine internals but it was awesome. I miss it. This vid brought back great memories.
Your commentary makes this old boy smile.
Oh Man, that hurt! I drive my 91 Mustang GT nearly every day. I've had it for 20 years and my wife is pretty sure I'm insane for keeping it for so long.
Hey if its what you like it's what you like not everyone has to change cars like women change styles
wow how many miles do you have on it ?
I'll admit it's getting a little harder to get in and out of it (I'm 70). I still like it though.@@nou8257
It's got 159,784 miles. That's almost embarrassing! @@katieb777
The abuse only comes from Chevvy people... It's called "Projection". Keep your car and enjoy it. All the best.
As the former owner of a 93 GT that was very similar to this one, I have to say all of your pokes and jabs at Fords, Mustangs and their owners had me rolling. Glad to see this car in your hands, I know that you'll do it justice. I traded my GT in back in 1998 for a Jeep ZJ. Even though that Jeep lasted me for the next 20 years and 220k miles I still felt bad giving up my Mustang. Long story short, a few years later I found my paperwork on it and I figured that I'd try to track down the new owner and see if they'd be willing to sell it. To my surprise it never made it off the dealer lot (well at least not to a new owner) The dealer's son took the car off the lot about a week after I traded it in and got into a wreck and totaled it out. Was a sad day for me for sure. Best of luck with this build. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for your next videos on it!
what a moron
Again, as a Ford engineer... I can totally relate. When will we learn? :D "It looked good in CAD" is the bane of my existence.
I just thought it was, “well, I don’t have to work on it”. 😂
As a retired Mechanical cad designer I can totally agree with you! Early CADD was pretty primitive and even as recently as 2011 I was appalled by the perceptions of what CAD could do well, but actually could not. I especially loved when companies claimed how the various CAD platforms were TOTALLY compatible with each other! LOL I spent more time fixing, rebuilding, reconfiguring, redesigning problems that either never should have happened or could have easily been avoided.
@@markmccallion2856 brother, I'm a Land Surveyor and have been using CAD software for ever and is so overrated. The problem is that there's a generation of people that decided that whatever we have to draw has to be in CAD but they do not bother understanding how ever it is CAD works and the limitations, although I have to say that mechanical drawings in CAD has come leaps and bounds neater than land survey implementations.
sometimes its not even the engineer's fault; its the Bean Counters in Finance Screeching "That's Too expensive, make it out of cheaper materials" or "X amount of Dollars is too much to add maintenance covers to the skid plate, delete them!"
The Scott comments are rather funny ! Scotts sarcasm is just one of the reasons I love his channel as do his many subscribers. Hope he never goes soft on us !
Best Scott quote on this video, "You can't wreck it if it's always in the shop." Love it!
I was a Ford senior master Ford tech for almost 40yrs. I love Fords and have always driven them. I absolutely do not mind you throwing rocks at them, I know what they are though. I have watched your channel for a long time and enjoy every bit of each show. Thank you sir!
Am I the only person who has had exceptionally good luck with Fords? My everyday driver is a 1996 Ranger that still looks new, drives great, and will probably reach 400,000 miles by October.
@@jeffgoddard4100I've had a good run, but most have been modern affairs. 15 Fiesta ST, 15 Fiesta SFE (1.0), 15 Ecostang, 13 1.6 ecoboost Fusion (with manual, rareeeee), and a Taurus Sho sprinkled in there too. All were dead reliable despite lots of abuse.
I'm very sure I am a total outlier though.
That car is very surprisingly original! Makes me miss my black 93 GT Convertible.
I always enjoy your videos, the afternoon crew scream coming off the trailer still makes me laugh every time. Also, I love the fact that youtubers watch other channels and use their lines as well. The "there's your problem lady" is such a classic now. Thanks for the effort and constant videos you make.
Never knew I'd see a water pump rebuild here. I'm impressed!
We all learned something today! 😂
Straight from a BMW shop manual
I've done it a few times too. I could get a rep kit or a new, same price, but the kit was better quality, so did that.
Finally, your rebuilding a car that is actually worth the effort.
Bagging on the haters, a very rewarding hobby! Please continue to document your talent, and thanks for sharing
I been looking forward to seeing the Mustang come back to life since the car show view ! Was nice to meet you and the pizza girl and chat a little by the way. Your videos are awesome as well as your sense of humor the entertainment never stops !
I love the channel. And im also glad you still work on Fords sometimes. These foxbodys are great cars. I've owned one for 24 years, and it has been very reliable. Thanks for sharing!
There was a salvage yard next to my house when these were new. The guy there specialized in rebuilding these.(convertibles) He was the master of welding front end wrecks and back end wrecks toghether!
Looks like someone really looked after that car previously, shame it got crashed
100k in 30 years? You can bet that car was somebodies baby!
Yes, and i hope an effort is made to the previous owner to see if they still want it.
The character arc you’ve taken that I never thought you would…”first we’ve gotta wash it up first.”
I'm kinda surprised you didn't give it a little tug with the portable frame rack, to give you some room behind the radiator.
Another Mustang convertible. What happened to the one we aren't allowed to mention? Did you keep building it or scrap it because it was too hard to fit the old body on the later frame? Would be interesting to find out and see more of it if you are still working on it.
I Wanna know The Same thing
Your not supposed to ask..no soup for u!
Dude its only been 3 years
He should of just replace body panels on that car and up graded to a small block 289 or 302 . It would of been a nice old classic car.
Thank you Scott for electing to keep this one on the road. Dont see many clean foxes these days. I will enjoy watching/learning more from your expertise and thorough rebuild. I have one myself that is gonna need exactly what you're about embark upon. Mine still looks decent and runs and drives. Repair before I bought it was done half ass in my opinion. Looking forward to the build.
I have never been a Ford guy, but I am glad to see it being saved!
Scott, I’ve been a diehard Ford guy pretty much my whole life. But anymore, I’m moving away from them. What passes for quality from Ford these days is atrocious at best. No haters tears outta me, love your sarcasm and wit! Keep the videos coming, I’ll keep watching 😉😁👍
Scott your attitude is the reason i watch your videos keep it up .
“You can’t wreck it if it’s always in the shop” ❤
Ever see a car fall off a lift? . . .
Always loved the way they sound.
I always loved the sound that these old pushrod 5.0 engines make. Glad to see you working to save this one...
Wow. It looks like that stang was in immaculate condition until the crash. It must have been the pride and joy of the owner. I bet he or she cried after that crash.
I love this guy, hes funny and hes real.
Some people might not like him. I don't give a damn. I just found this channel and I can guarantee you i'm gonna stay
Scott is a beast bodywork guy and regular mechanic not that many do both and he's a gym guy he gets my vote
Great guy love his commentary, and I'm English so his sarcasm kicks it for me,great channel, thanks dude.
Love all the shade you kept throwing at Fords. Also really enjoyed pro tips like ensuring that you miss the drain pain when draining the antifreeze.
Only a rookie would get the antifreeze IN the drain pan! 😂
that was my dream car back in the day, i would love to have that now
It will be available when it is done! Live your dream!
Laughed at all the Ford jokes this episode. Just as funny as all the jokes made about all the other car brands. So glad you don't discriminate and treat all brands the same. Thanks for another great episode. Peace!!
Man, I love your description, you speak your mind! Good job!
I sometimes wonder why I love whatching your vlogs and then you go a buy a ford. Totally understand why again ! 🇨🇦
Missed your channel for a while….I’m glad you’re back
Great video Scott...I forgot the early 5.0s only had 4 lugs...not many V8s with 4 lug wheels...
Not all of them had 4 lugs depended on the package you bought.
All Factory built Fox Mustangs were 4 lug except for the 84-86 SVO and the 1993 Cobra R.
Thanks, Scott! No Friday night would be complete without my weekly "Fix" of Vehcor.
Looking forward to this one. I would love to see more "old school" repairs.
It is a nice change of pace. It helps to appreciate the new technology and also wish they hadn’t changed some of it. 😂

👍👌👏 Yeah, it's kind of fifty fifty with all the new stuff. 2) Not everything old was good and not everything new is bad.
Best regards, luck and especially health to all of you.
Okay change the note now to no radiator LOL
Now if you started till shoot transmission fluid clear across the shop LOL
I had a 88 gt convertible same color in college. 5spd swap, e303 cam, exhaust etc etc. I loved it for years until i got my first ls1 trans am. Then i never looked back. Id love to have it back but they guy that has it gutted it and its was a race car so it would take a parts car to rebuild it.
Many of them turned into race cars, that is why original ones have gone up in value so much.
Love the channel ! Never a dull moment !
What an unexpected surprise! I really enjoyed the video, and had completely forgotten about the fuel pump re-set switch. Someone really loved that car, I'm sorry it got taken from them.
Poor 5.0 .... I had a 1989 LX 5.0 Mustang hatchback back in the day. Hate if you must but I really like that body style and it was super fun to drive. Glad to see your saving this poor pony. I am sure you will do a great job! Good luck sir and enjoy your weekend!
Such precision tool and adjustments on water pump repairs
Only OEM tools for that kind of work! 😂
@@vehcorI trust you will use a stout oak tree and come along to pull that core support straight....
Happy Friday, Scott! This was actually one of my dream cars back in the day. I've always wanted one of these. Now I want one of the new Shelby convertibles!
Really great video, Scott!
I absolutely love 80's and 90's Ford's especially the Fox mustang. Can't wait to see how everything goes with the repair.🐺
Great find! I would sure like to find something like this. The front damage and engine problem ain't nothing.
Alright stop...collaborate and listen. Scott is back with a new renovation. Rolling down the road in 5.0.. a Pony car for the channel.. nice. Stay safe and be well
Looks like a good project. Its crazy how much those Fox body cars have gone up these past few years. They are often selling for more than they were new in good condition. I need to get my 87 with 306k miles back on the road soon.
Great stuff
Thanks for posting
Scott, I share your sentiments about Fords. Keep up the good works.
As a ford fan I wouldn't have it eny other way. I really in joy you content. Thanks
“You can’t wreck it if it’s always in the shop” . Never knew I'd see a water pump rebuild here. I'm impressed!.
Scott i hope this build stires the juices and we can get some more content on your other old /new mustang build i really enjoyed the how too on that one cheers from down under
That is not up to me: th-cam.com/video/wSbFpkvsz8M/w-d-xo.html
Enjoyment at all levels 👍🏼
As someone who owns a 88 gt i can confirm ford nailed it on reliabilty.might as well not run a hood.saves the trouble of having to lift it everyday.

The constact sarcasm is thoroughly appreciated! 🙂
Nice work like always
I was born the day the mustang was released, I break down a lot, have had some rust repair and body damage…..but hey I’m still on the road.
Please keepem coming!
As usual, excellent content. Thanks 👍
You can never go wrong with Silverado single cab and f body mustangs. God bless you. You get a like and a comment !!! Well done 👍🏻
Nice, interesting project. Looking forward to seeing more videos on this one.
You have reverse lights on both sides. Consider that a win 🏆
I saw this at the car show and took a picture of the sign to find your youtube channel. Hope to see it back at the show after the rebuild.
Happy Friday Scott. This makes me feel old. I was in high school when this was new.
These were the hot rods of those days. Now Civics are faster. 😂
your still young...
ewwwww@@vehcor
A different era of auto manufacturing. I missed the "wiggle and pull" method on this one!😢
Scott, you are so funny! I hate it when my frame rail goes limp too! Seriously, this Mustang may be 30 years old, but it will be really sharp looking when you are finished. It is a great color combination.
you were lucky with the water pump, those bolts seize in the block.
Love your comments, great job.
Shame that got wrecked and with new parts. That hurt!
On to the next parts. Gonna look great when it's done.
This will be an interesting build. It was the car to have back in the early 90’s.
In the 1960, working in my dad's garage, while changing one of my first water pumps, on a 289, my dad said something I've never forgotten. "Make sure you put the long bolts in the long holes and the short bolts in the short holes."
Got those water pump bolts mighty close to arcing that battery. That'll get you excited 😂
You could say it has a lot of potential..
Nice I have a 93 like that it’s red white top 92k on it
Can’t wait to see you finish this one 😎👍🏾
This is my dream car. I would love to get this car from you after your done. I will keep watching and see what your willing to let it go for if willing. I can’t wait for the finished results.
Another good entertaining video. Actually pretty good looking car.
Great video! I saw nothing wrong with your attitude or ability. It was entertaining and extremely watchable.👍
Go ahead and make all the "Ford" jokes/comments you want, you are not hurting this Ford guy's feelings. LOL Thanks for another entertaining video Scott! P.S. I learn a lot from your videos... Thanks!
You got a great buy for a car which "doesn’t run or drive." Was it a fuel pump shutoff that you switched on in the trunk ? We didn't get these here in New Zealand, Love your videos Scott, they clarify why crash repairs cost what they do. Go Ford !!!
Yeah these years had electric fuel pumps for the fuel injection. Even some of the earlier years did, though sometimes the shutoff was under one of the front seats.
I knew it was the gas shut off switch! Was tipped off on that one years ago on a SVO. Cool car.
Lots of work. But, I have the utmost confidence in you.👍🏻👍🏻
My old man had a 90s Taurus. No accident but he went over some big bump that tripped that fuel pump switch. A simple push and the car was fine.
I love that you took it to a car show. Way too many trailer queens at car shows these days.
Congratulations Scott
I had an 86 LX 2 door with the 5.0. Bought it because it was lighter than the hatchback. Loaned it to my brother who had been hit ealier in the day in his car so he could go on a date. He drove like he stole it, did a 360 and hit a light pole. Hit it so hard the engine hit the firewall and ripped the trans from the mounts.
Love that hood strap!
Less prone to failure than the original! 😂
😂 Loved this video. I was hoping it was Vanilla Ice in the CD player right from the thumbnail. Well done!
Yeah buddy, you earned that subscribe at "power manual window" lol. Great vid !
I had to do that old school repair when I was a teenager. The gas struts on my Mercury Capri let go and drove the hatch latch into the back of my head. My reaction was to slam the hatch hard enough to trip the fuel shutoff. Luckily I had overheard a conversation of this happening to someone's Aerostar van or I would have been stumped why my car shut off when I slammed the hatch.
That Mustang was definitely well taken care of, at least for the majority of it's life. It sure looks worth fixing!
Nice to see you are moving up in the world and finally build a decent car. There is no 30 year old GM that is as good as that 5.0.
Love the well-deserved Ford jokes. Though this old Mustang was built years before Ford's Better Idea to use cheap 2-piece lugnuts that swell, hopefully, you will find an opportunity to insert a comment about that brilliant feature in a future broadcast.
As an owner of a 92 Mustang I was really looking forward to the snark. As I'm watching, all your pokes and prods ring true. Much more than a passing knowledge. Could you have owned one of these at one time or is it all from working on them in the shop? Can't wait for the rest of this series. Keep up the snark, its a great way to end a tough work week.
At 7:18, you dang near shorted out the battery terminals with one of those water pump bolts. 😱
👍👌👏 Great purchase, congratulations! I like this car and I would love to own it (although it's black). Fir being 30 years old it is in a great condition. Just over 100.000 mls isn't much amd the car looks well looked after. I'm eagerly looking forward to watch the next video part.
Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health in particular.
All my fords start no problems never have an issue. Them little 5.0 were some of the best engines ever made.
When when you were ripping that fan cover off, you forgot to say, hulk, smash! Looks like a fun build.
I started getting all nostalgic for our E Series Falcons of the same vintage - those power windows! Once a car got to a few years old every window had its own quirks, typically one that was sort of OK, two that moved weird and made robot death noises, and one that had totally given up. 90's cars really were like wives - because you loved the overall package you came to accept a few inherent flaws.
That is an unusually nice '93. Except for the bent parts.
