I have the 2012 model. It's been a reliable motor over the last 9 years. Have had to clean the carb a few times. However, I tend to not run it as often as I probably should. These things were designed to be ran. If you let it sit for extended periods, even with non-eth fuel (drain the carb/bowl etc.) you will more than likely still run into issues with the carb. So run it like a scalded dog!!!!
I have the same model, all fine for 12 months then the Carrburator went, 2 weeks later the Re-Coil unit went also....both were replaced free under the warranty
+Andrew Carson Too bad those components went, but nice they were covered without issue. I still have less than a few hours on mine. Hoping to get out a little more this season.
This is great motor. They require any repairs super extreme rarely. You can have it for like 10 years plus with even some commercial use, and it may happen to have near zero repairs. At most it's like water pump impeller thing, that's about it. Outboards are expensive. This one us super. You have exuberant amount I found jealous nuts, who only option have left is to bug you telling you its not a Yamaha. But the track records of Tohatsu for trouble free are quite close, if not the same. Tohatsu would be a bit louder, have a bit more rattle and vibration, but otherwise it's crazy good, not a reason to criticize
Tohatsu owner's manual recommends removing the prop before running in a test tank. Is there a good reason for that? I'm pretty safety conscious but as long as one uses common sense that seems a bit too cautious.
I've had more problems with the Carrburator last week.....did 70hrs with new carb and it had to go back to my dealer to get sorted out....I am not impressed with the carrburators on the Tohatsu 20hp.
Tell me this thing doesn't shake your hand to death! I have tried so many 2 cyl. 4 strokes and they all have a bad vibration in them because the pistons are firing at the same time. If you go to a 3 cyl. 4 stroke... they are GLASS smooth. Nobody warned me about this when I got my new 15 suzuki 4 stroke on my 14' aluminum (which didn't help vibration) back in 05'. It was fast as hell, BUT My hand was so sore and red... and I don't like to bitch, after a 10 minute ride. I know they get a LITTLE better after they settle on their mounts, but not much.Sold it for a 2 stroke johnson and never looked back.
24" wide. 35" tall (including castors). 36" long (20" between castors front to back - extra length in front holds fuel tank). And there's a wee bit of an angle on the uprights tilting towards the back... maybe 7-9 degrees.
Just going through the 'break-in period' and have less than an hour on it. So far so good though! It pushes my 4.3m Seamax Ocean430 really well at 1/2 throttle.. I'll post another video once I get it through the break-in period.
I bought a Seamax Ocean 430 two days ago and looking forward to purchase the exact model motor. I will be carrying 4 passengers and be fishing BC lakes. Since you have the exact boat, do you think 20 hp would be a little weak on my boat. What type of speed do you think I would be getting?
4 passengers plus gear will slow down the 20 a fair bit. I found the inflatable has quite a bit of drag but perhaps I wasn't getting the correct psi. But to be honest, I still haven't gotten through the break-in period of the engine. Haven't had it opened up yet, and therefore can't offer you a speed estimate.
Always run carb cleaner in the gas. always, period. Trouble free. And, each time you shut down the engine when done boating, disconnect the fuel line from tank, and run the engine till it uses all the fuel and shuts down die to empty, dry carburetor. You don't do this, you gonna have dead motor, and keep replacing carburetors
+Eric Ross tohatsu makes the smaller mercury motors. if you bought a mercury of the same horsepower and year as this, it would essentially be the exact same thing as a tohatsu

Nice motor you have there. Running a good stabilizer + fuel injector cleaner is a good preventive measure for carburetor problems.
At 1:50 or so there is a wolf or something in the background . . . it goes away when u start the engine . . .
i own a 1989 model and it sat for 2 years and fired up on the first pull
@1:54 I thought your dog was frozen!! lol

yup, these motors are junk
What problems have you had.

Nice little bugger i want 1 of those how much do they go for??

How was lifting it onto the frame, plus how are you going to transport the engine. Looks sweet.

Liked your video. I have a smaller Tohatsu, can you give me some rough dimension of your engine stand? Thx

pm price
How is it holding up?
Can't help. Sold it a few years ago.
Japanese technology got to love it 🤷♂️.
Any chance you can give an update on what you think of this outboard?
Sadly, I haven't used it enough to comment on performance.... life happened. 😕
im looking forward to buy one like it for my 3.5m dinghy suzumar how you find this motor?

+Jay McConnell how is it going with the engine?

sadly, you are not running the engine at load, so the motor is not breaking in properly
I wasn't breaking it in here, just getting it going for the first time. This video was the only time it ran in a bucket.

should I do the same with 2 stroke ?
Thien Le totally, as long as it used carburetor, regardless of two, or four stroke
never race the engine as its still breaking in.
How do you like it? Im thinking about buying tohatsu vs. mercury
Eric Ross I honestly haven't used it enough to really be a good judge. Maybe this summer...

Yamaha sounds more quiet and is more reliable.
CRaptor nah man I’ve rocked a tohatsu for 10 years and it’s still rock solid
