    It's been ten years since Windows 8 came out, and we still haven't gotten over Windows 7. That really shows how perfect the OS was. Every Windows since 7 should've gotten the message "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

      Windows 7 was mainly a desktop productivity OS. With Windows 8, Microsoft went to the complete other extreme, of making a fully tablet oriented, content consumption OS, as they believed that was the way forward. Windows 10 and 11 are both still suffering from the bad effects of this. Microsoft is going the Apple route, of assuming the users are idiots, and shouldn't be allowed to do anything that could potentially cause problems. I think, that if it wasn't for the culture of rampant lawsuits they have in the USA, Microsoft would be more inclined to let users have full control over their systems. But they are an American company, and they know that crazy Americans might sue them if anything happens, even if it was their own fault. Then there's the whole idea of creating a more closed ecosystem, where Microsoft can try to force their own "software as a service" approach to people, in the hopes of making money by subscriptions instead of purchases. That approach creates a much more stable revenue stream than when users simply purchase a license as a one-time thing.
      This is a trend that isn't likely to get better any time soon.

    There's one major gripe that prevents me from jumping to 10 even with all these tweaks. When you pin files to a program's jumplist, you can't sort them via drag and drop. Try pinning text files to Notepad (pinned on taskbar) and then sorting the pinned files. Easy peasy on 7. Impossible on 10. We need a taskbar replacement too!

  • @1chiTheKiller
    @1chiTheKiller 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

    I actually used your last video on Windows 11 and how to get that looking and working like it's supposed to, and I've loved using those tweaks. It's vastly superior to the barebones approach the OS currently has. I just don't understand why they thought it was a good idea to have all these convenient features in Windows 10 (and earlier) but then remove most all of it in Windows 11. The start menu in 11 is horrible. Explorer is stripped down, and the taskbar is missing loads of features, namely drag and dropping a file from an explorer window onto a program, which I do literally all the time.
    What were they thinking?!?!

      _Never going back._
      Valve has helped so much with funding the eradication of issues with playing Windows games on Linux for their Steam Deck in the last 5 years that there's almost no tweaks that need to be made anymore. And Linux has almost everything you could want for any technical work with filesystems, different file types, etc. that Windows always required obscure third party software for. The majority of Windows programs besides games can also run on Linux, minus a few art programs, which you can run in a VM, which are very good on Linux. Linux is the way forward. Join me.

    I am with you on that. I could work with Windows7, Windows10 and Windows11 literally drive me nuts while using it. Why? I don't even fully know but here some reasons:
    - The nag-messages when you do something that MS does not like (like installing Firefox and setting it as the default browser, or setting mpc-hc as the default video-player)
    - The push/forced online account to use Windows at all
    - I think it looks rather ugly, aesthetically speaking, among which that weird new (since W10) settings panel which looks like they made it for a phone instead of a PC. Also, what is up with it being monochrome?? I also don't like how the color of the up-bar of the Window changes based on whether it is focused or not, the idea is good but it looks ugly.
    - I hate it that the file-manager hides the extensions and does not fully respect the user his sorting-preference (still putting the recent files on top, no matter how you sort)
    - I hate it that the window-manager of Windows now opens every program in a tiny window instead of just using the entire resolution of the monitor. If I want to snap a window then I will just do it while using hotkeys (Windows-number), I really want programs to be fullscreen or halfscreen most of the time, not in a weird tiny window
    - The high CPU- and RAM-usage. Yes, I don't mind RAM which I have getting used, fine. I do mind it being so high without being doing useful things, just for the system. It is more a principle thing, I have 32 GB.
    - The suggestive dialoge-'options' with Windows very much pushing which answer you 'should' give.
    I could probably rant a bit longer but I think that this will do. :p

    I still use Windows 7. I'm debating do i jump to Linux after Win7... We'll see. So many programs and drivers are still connected to Windows. Regarding Open Shell / Classic Shell, it's quite amazing! I've been playing with it this year, and it's amazing how much one can customize it. That's why i love it so, i really customizing stuff. I suppose that's why i like Coreldraw, PDF-XChange Editor etc. so much. I rock the Classic style of Classic Shell.

    Sounds a lot like what I had to do with Windows 8.1 when I finally made the jump over to that OS. Between the annoying permissions and "Metro" set up Microsoft has, I genuinely hated the way things were working, but after making various tweaks much like were shown in this video, I've had no real issues with 8. As things are starting to lag behind further and further on this aging OS, I'm considering jumping to 10 or 11, but I need to make certain I can make the same changes as I did years ago to 8.
    Great video. I love Classic Shell and the overall flexibility of options for how you can set up your start menu.

    Privately, on my desktop-PC, I only use Linux these days, including gaming. I was kind of fine with Windows7 but then Windows10 was so horrible for me that I just dumped Windows, to a large extend because I had no SSD back then and W10 without a SSD was pretty much unusable. Also something went wrong and MS could not downgrade it to W7. When the support of W7 ended I quit using Windows. On my desktop-PC (right now) I use Arch (which Valve uses for its SteamDeck) and dwm, a minimalist but fully featured and flexible tiling window manager. I love it, I am willing to sacrifice that one game which I played and which is not supported yet on Linux, whatever. Currently I am playing Hollow Knight, Cuphead and StarCraft2, I am fine with gaming. But I do have Windows (11) on my laptop because not always I can decide which software I use, so I know all about the pain which Windows-users go through. Recently somehow Microsoft failed at installing a driver for my laptop because it could not install one of its own libraries, impressive. I had the BSOD's because the OEM and MS together made a mess of certain drivers...

    One thing I liked about Windows 7 is I didn't really have to change many settings. Whereas with 10 and 11, it is a ton of settings I have dig through to tweak. Makes setting up a new computer a real pain. Not sure if they let you save your settings to a file that you can just transfer over or something when setting up a 2nd computer.

    Hey Logan, real huge fan. Been watching your stuff ever since 2014, give or take. Regardless of my degree (BSEE), content from creators like you have made me incredibly much more tech savvy throughout the workplace and have allowed me to succeed in the engineering industry (primarily CAD, 3D modeling, etc.). Thank you so much for that, additionally , your whokeys discount code allowed me to purchase office professional for my overtime work at home as well :).
    That being said, we’re dealing with a scenario, where we had a colleague get laid off since he primarily got so frustrated with his tasks and efforts, he would essentially click everywhere on his computer and ruin every setting in both CAD and windows. I’ve done everything on my end short of a complete clean install of windows, I was able to salvage the default CAD settings, but he even upgraded to windows 11 despite me warning him not to do so. So the computer is a 8700k/RTX 2070, running at the speed of a pentium (Dell OEM to make matters worse….) What can be done to completely restore that copy of windows without resulting to a format + clean install of windows? I’ve told my boss that a clean install of windows is the best way to approach this at this point in the pc’s lifecycle, but it’s understandably not ideal or efficient to do just that. Any ideas on how to get this computer back in shape?

    Man, it is getting to be a pain in the ass to setup a new windows install now!
    I remember just disabling the "customized view" in xp that hid apps and system tray icons, and doing a few other small tweaks... Now it's a Huuuugee process!
    Awesome video though, all those are very helpful. Especially the start menu, file explorer, and audio trumpet app.
    But that means I'll have to buy a windows key... Haha.
    I've been casually using Linux mint and like it, but after a few years I'm still not as fluid as with windows. I had to manually install a wifi driver and I did it, but it wasn't as fluid as with all the windows tricks I had learned over the years.

    Dont get me wrong im a win7 worshipper. But you clearly havent even tried to get into windows 10. that view button is easily opened in windows 10, RIGHT CLICK within the map (no need to move mouse) open view and there you go (which is faster than moving ur mouse to top ALL the time). There is many more things you deny that already are functional within windows 10, and ofcourse fast to reach.

    Good video but he moves too damn fast, it's tough to follow. Use FREE Classic Shell to make win 10 look like 7.

    Human nature is so tedious. I imagine hearing the people with horse and wagons complaining about this new thing called an automobile. That will never work, they said. They’ll need fuel stations all over! Then they died. And the next generation embraced the automobile.

    Thank You, I tried some of the software it does work with Win11, Open Shell, which is better than nothing. OldExplorer not so much.
    Thanks for posting the OEM links.
    I have to agree I like going to the root, Im a win 7 person myself, but Ms screw me on my legit version of Win7 by saying that the authentication system is no longer active.

    Honestly most of this stuff can be done with registry keys, other than the icons.

      I don't trust Windows update... Afraid it'll break registry stuff. It'll probably break other stuff as well but it might not be as hard to undo

    • @griffin1366
      @griffin1366 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@teksyndicate Ah, didn't expect you to respond! Most of it is just using the old registry keys as default. Personally I haven't had an issue but each to their own!

    Still have my Win 7 Ultimate disc and cd key ….. I wish Win 11 was mostly like that 🥰🥰🫠🫠👍. Win 7 was the. It’s like Win O/S EVER! I can see why 🤤🤤. I do wish MS would only change icons when there’s a valid reason too ….. the Win 11 skin is blah imo …. 10 is better by comparison, but still Win 7 😇👍😉

    I've been using EarTrumpet forever! Unfortunately you can't drag to hide the "old" volume control on Windows 11

    • @SimplexDesigns
      @SimplexDesigns 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can hide it with startallback. Made by the dev of oldnewexplorer. It reenables the windows 10 taskbar for 11 along with having 7 style explorer and start menu.
