    Thanks for this! Just made this repair yesterday. I had to do the same jumper cable deal- the rear (negative) xlr terminal had come off the board, so I patched it into the negative terminal of the TRS jack which has a way better connection.

    Thanks for the tips at the end of the video. I have some M-Audio AV-40s that are buzzing and then at high volumes distorting. Common problem as I understand it... anyway I've been toying with the idea of taking them apart to see if it's a DIY fixable thing. I don't know anything about electronics so I appreciate the video.

    Cheng capacitors are out of Taiwan, not China, and are not terrible. Nothing high-performance or high-reliability, but usually not much of an issue. What's really iffy though is that they would place that one capacitor leaning onto i'd say a big bridge rectifier! Those things tend to run a bit warm, there's no harm to the rectifier to run it at 130°C so it's common to size them like that for cost reasons, but the capacitor won't like that for very long, in fact it wouldn't like that even if it was a top quality unit straight out of Japan. And once one cap is gone, it'll tend to spike and kill multiple others. Just leaning the rectifier away might make a world of difference.

    Also, I have a pair of BX8a Deluxes, and there is a noticeable mains hum in both my speakers, and apparently in a lot of these, and someone found that moving the motherboard away from the power supply removed the noise, so I'm going to try and get something in between those two to block the power supply from sending the noise to the motherboard.

    • @HeavyInHawaii
      @HeavyInHawaii  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Get a meter and see if it is blown. With the speaker disconnected hook up your multimeter and check the impedance, if it is blown the meter will read infinite impedance, if it's good it will read 0 or 1 I believe. Swap amplifier boards on your monitors and see if the problem moves to the known good subwoofer. I'm nothing close to an electrical engineer but I'm guessing your sub is blown. Hope this helps

      It's the caps in most cases with these. They leak. I'm just, watching this to get see what the, caps are before I take, mine, apart.

    • @stinkworx
      @stinkworx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lorenmorgan1931 They don't "leak". That's glue to keep the large capacitors solder connections intact as they have to sustain a lot of vibration. If the capacitors are blown they may (or may not) become convex on top instead of flat. You can remove them and test with a multimeter. It's more likely to be a solder joint problem.

    • @lorenmorgan1931

    My BX8 has a working power supply LED but does not give any sound. I already checked the cable, input to board and board to speaker connection, no problem. Capacitors also look ok. Any advice? Should I visually identify bad solder joints?

    • @HeavyInHawaii
      @HeavyInHawaii  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you hooked a meter to your speakers to make sure they are good? If speaker is good and you don't see any bad solder joints then I would guess the amplifier circuit is bad. Just a guess. Swap speakers to boards. Try swapping any components you can to narrow the problem down to a single piece. Good luck b.

    Hey I have a little problem here with mines and it’s that the tweeter works perfectly fine but the woofer is giving me a humming sound maybe theres something loose in the cables but I can’t get in to the board because some Screws doesn’t want to come out what should i do?

    • @HeavyInHawaii
      @HeavyInHawaii  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you've already done all the cheap troubleshooting (swapping cables) and you're sure the problem is on the board then you'll have to find a way to get the board out of the enclosure. If the screw is stripped you can possibly use a screw extractor bit. Make sure the power outlet is properly grounded. Get a ground fault indicator plug to test it. If you're using good xlr cables and you have a good ground then I would start looking at the board. Change your power cable also while you're at it. Good luck bro.

    trying to get my BX8a's apart but the bastards glued the harness connectors together >_< Did yours have the same problem...? gonna try to scrape it off and disconnect them. Problem I'm having with one of mine is that the woofer stopped firing after a while but if I push in on the cone slightly it starts to work again :\ I'm guessing maybe a loose connection at the terminal or maybe a weak solder joint?
    I know this is an old post but would really appreciate some feedback from you as you obviously know what your doing.

    • @HeavyInHawaii
      @HeavyInHawaii  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I honestly had no clue what I was doing, just opened it up and started poking around. The wire harness in my monitor was zip tied together, making it difficult to remove the crossover and amp. I carefully cut the zip tie with wire snips.
      Your woofer problem should be easy to fix just like my problem was. Likely a bad solder joint/connection or broken circuit path. Glad the video helped. Good luck.

      If I’m seeing a brownish-yellowish semi-hard substance that appears to have leaked out onto the circuit board at the bottom of each capacitor, what does this indicate? Capacitors shot? Will the substance on the board surface affect the board (cause it to short, or other issues)? If so, how do I️ clean off the surface of the board to remove the substance, with messing up the board? Any help or advice or suggestions that anyone could provide greatly appreciated...

    Question. I live in the U.S corporation and My BX8s are set to the standard 115 V but I find that they get really hot. If I change the AC Select to 230, will this help the monitors stay cool and will it mess anything up?

  • @AlexMakesItGood

    I know this is an old video... But one of my BX8 has started to like blow up the sound real loud of the low end frequencies, when it is turned up too loud. Not that it is the loudest it has ever been, not even close, but it just started having this sensitivity... What could be the issue?
    Happened shortly after getting the BX Subwoofer. Both are M-Audio. Goes over soundcard Scarlett 2i2.

    • @HeavyInHawaii
      @HeavyInHawaii  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hate using my scarlett 2i2 with these monitors. You have to use unbalanced cables so you get a lot of noise. If the bass freqs. are sounding distorted I would look at the capacitors on the m audio board. I'm assuming you're not cranking these monitors and using them as PA speakers.

    • @AlexMakesItGood
      @AlexMakesItGood 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The monitors themselves are about half way up in volume. I find it easier to control from the Scarlett 2i2 there on after.
      But what would the capacitors do? I mean, I guess the M-Audio set should work just fine together, right?
      Also the noise is reduced dramatically, if I pause the Subwoofer. So it's like they share the noise output. Pausing the subwoofer doesn't remove the noise though.

    My tweeter has a dent in it, can I push the back of it to push out the dent if I take the face off or is the back of the cone not accessible in these?

      +David “Waitwutmyname” Hager No idea how to fix a tweeter. I've seen someone pull out the dent with a needle and then super gluing the pin hole shut.

      use a vacuum cleaner nozzle carefully, or if you aren't scared, put your mouth over it and suck it out..😀

      Double sided tape worked for me! Gently push in to stick and then pull out to undo the dent.
