I miss Wray Castle. For nearly three years, myself and a fellow Warden, were the property’s fire watch. Sleeping was in the servant accommodation, while cooking was somewhat basic in the kitchen area. Minimal heating and the need to unlock each door and pass through, then re-lock each door. Meant that food was always cold by the time of eating. But it was icy cold in the kitchen area, even on hot summer days. So eating there was boring and rather chilly. Some visiting Wardens got to see some of what we saw. And apart from the daytime views, from the highest parts including the many roofs. Exploring was mainly after work in the evenings, (if we weren’t doing the night watch elsewhere).
