  • Craigmillar Castle History & Tour / Medieval Castle in Edinburgh Where Murder Plots Were Planned
Discover the history and explore Craigmillar Castle with us. Located just a few miles outside of Edinburgh city centre, although with its peaceful atmosphere it feels much further afield. From holy relics being discovered to murder plots being hatched, it has a long history and for a ruinous castle it is incredibly very intact.

Loved it. My daughter and I walked what seemed like miles to get to it from Edinburgh and then back again! It was a lovely day so we really enjoyed it.

Thank you. It is a good few miles from the city centre so must have been a good walk indeed! We loved it, for a ruinous castle there is so much left to explore!

Yeh I'm feeling a little guilty now, there is so much history here, if I didn't have to work a day job I would take to the road and spend everyday exploring!

Wonderful. So hate to see castles just left but I know nothing of them.

For so long so many historic castles were left abandoned and uncared for. At least Craigmillar is now being looked after 🙂

Very sturdy! I wonder why it was ultimately abandoned?

Good question! I have not come across a decisive answer on why the Gilmour family left Craigmillar Castle. The family relocated to Inch House in Gilmerton in the Edinburgh suburbs. Perhaps it was the cost of upkeeping the castle or the accommodation was just more suitable are my guesses.
