Lie ballad ver. was actually a mv for the horror k-drama that T-ara Jiyeon starred in. Loved seeing your confused reaction ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
It also seems a bit like Eunjung's Death Bell movie!
The ballad version MV of Lie is actually for a drama Jiyeon (who is the only member in the MV) was in called Soul which is why it’s so out of left field. 🤣 Totally understand the Britney comparison to YDMC (how coincidental) but not so much Cry Cry. And A+ If U Seek Amy reference 💖 Cry Cry is definitely my favorite of the three and probably one of my favorite T-Ara songs period!

This is has been really interesting bc I am realizing that I have...never actually seen a T-Ara music video before XD like, partly it's because they have so many of those drama mvs that are crazy long but also I am realizing that I never sought them out, I always just...encountered them, lol. Bo Peep, Rolly Polly, and Lovey Dovey were SO ubiquitous when I was in Korea, like those songs were HUGE, I never had to seek them out. I'm enjoying hearing more of them! :D
For me personally I LOVE the sound effects in You Drive Me Crazy it just sounds so GOOD
You've finally gotten around to T-ara, so here I am, my ult group has summoned me :') LOL
So I'll start off with a brief history of the group: T-ara debuted in 2009 with 6 members, Eunjung, Jiyeon, Hyomin, Soyeon, Boram, and Qri (I will cover the members later in this comment). The fandom is named QUEEN'S. Their debut "Lie" under Core Contents Media (now MBK) was okay but soon after they already began to pull punches when they collaborated with labelmate Supernova with the song "T.T.L". It grabbed everyone's attention and imo is still one of the most successful co-ed collabs in K-pop history (proof of this being that BTS members like carpool karaoked to it in one of their reality shows). At the end of 2009, they again grabbed everyone's attention with "Bo Peep Bo Peep" due to its addictive beat and iconic "cat dance", and it even gave them their 1st win. They then released "You Drive Me Crazy"/"I Go Crazy Because of You" at the start of 2010 and again grabbed attention for being monster rookies.
Later in 2010 they added a member, Hwayoung, as a supporting rapper. While 2010 was not as much of a success, they soon saw immense success in 2011 after releasing "Roly-Poly", which launched them into mainstream success as a household name - everyone knew the song. Its mini album, John Travolta Wannabe, was even one of the best-selling of the entire year. They continued to release hit after hit with "Cry Cry" and "Lovey-Dovey", and a theme that "Roly-Poly" set up was their drama MVs - multiple members were originally trained as actresses before joining the group, and were still acting in dramas during T-ara promotions, so drama MVs were part of their expertise.
The year is now 2012, and as they announce promotions for "Day by Day" they also add another new member, Ahreum. Unfortunately, "Day by Day" resulted in trouble for the group when Hwayoung injured her leg and refused to attend practices, even going to a salon during the meanwhile. In fact, the injury was not even severe, but she faked needing to wear a cast. After this fiasco, Hyomin sent out a tweet about "putting in effort", but netizens misinterpreted this as the other members "picking on" Hwayoung, and found lots of "evidence" (read: fake evidence) of the members bullying Hwayoung. This became a huge scandal and during this the CEO kicked Hwayoung from the group, but never explained nor had T-ara apologise. As a result, the T-ara members were shunned from the Korean public and could not get a win on music shows for years to come... In 2013, Ahreum left the group and T-ara continued as OT6, releasing "Number 9".
In 2014, T-ara had a collaboration with Chopstick Brothers to cover their viral Chinese song "LIttle Apple", and this helped skyrocket T-ara's popularity in China, making them really the first domestic K-pop group (i.e. produced in and aimed for the Korean market, unlike Super Junior-M or EXO-M which were aimed at the Chinese market) to become hugely popular in China (fun fact: some Chinese netizens have even called STAYC "little T-ara" as they have high hopes for the group). So while T-ara did not see success in their home country, at least they were able to find new successes with Chinese fans. This also resulted in them releasing Chinese versions of later title tracks, like "So Crazy". (Note: Since 2010 or 2011, T-ara has also been active with Japanese releases, and they also had Japanese fans help them through the rough patch of their scandal.)
In 2017, T-ara was slated to return with their last comeback under MBK, but MBK messed up and had to delay their comeback, resulting in it releasing after Soyeon and Boram's contracts would expire. As a result, they left the group and would not participate in the last comeback. Then, during promotions for "What's My Name?", Hwayoung and her twin sister Hyoyoung appeared on a TV show and continued to play the "victim card" for the bullying scandal. Upon seeing this, a former T-ara staff member then finally spilled the beans, revealing the truth about the scandal: in reality, Hwayoung and Hyoyoung had sent threatening/bullying messages to Ahreum. After 5 long years, the truth had finally been revealed and T-ara's named was cleared; as a result, they got their 1st win on Inkigayo after 5 years, and only 3 members were actually present to receive that trophy on stage.
After their contracts expired, the members had a brief dispute with MBK over trademark issues, but it was resolved peacefully. While members have remained active with solo careers, musicals, acting, and such, the 4 remaining members did reunite on the MMTG Chuseok Special Concert in October last year, so they are not "disbanded" :)
Members:
-Boram (has the dance duet in "Cry Cry") - the shortest member and the oldest, as a result gives off the impression of a fake maknae
-Qri (blonde hair in "YDMC", red hair in "Cry Cry") - the current leader, considered the "lucky charm" as she has the 1st part in all of T-ara's most successful songs (including "Cry Cry")
-Soyeon (ponytail? in "Cry Cry") - the main vocalist, it became well-known at her debut that she was originally in the lineup for SNSD, but she eventually left when she did not feel ready for debut
-Eunjung (short, sideswept bang/hair in both songs) - specialties are rapping, high notes, and charisma, she was originally training as an actress before joining T-ara
-Hyomin (sunglasses in "YDMC", the one with the stick in "Cry Cry") - lead vocalist and rapper, she's known for bringing the "sexy" to T-ara
-Jiyeon (hair covers her eyes in both songs (kind of)) - the maknae, she was also training as an actress before T-ara and as a result acts in many of T-ara's MVs, over the years she's gradually grown from sub-vocalist to main/lead vocalist. since she's the same age, she's also a close friend to IU!
-Hwayoung (the other short-haired rapper in "Cry Cry") - rapper, she joined in 2010 after she and her twin sister appeared on some reality show and caught the CEO's attention, she recently appeared on Masked Singer and her video has SO many dislikes lol
-Ahreum (not in these songs) - vocalist and rapper, she joined in 2012 but left in 2013, she is now married and has a child
So, even though T-ara is my ult group, I didn't even know "Lie (Ballad ver.)" had an MV until like the other night, and such a creepy one at that too XD (My point being that this MV is not characteristic of T-ara at all lol...)
So, this was just a preview of T-ara, and tbh there's a LOT more I can say about them, but I'll leave it here as an introduction XD

T-ARA is the best girl group of 2nd gen. And they are the queen of ballads.
As a fan of T-ARA since 2010, I've also never seen that LIE ballad MV, only the non-ballad MV. I was just as shocked as you lol. Can't wait for you to react to their other releases, especially Roly Poly, Lovey Dovey, Number 9, Sexy Love, Day By Day, honestly they have an insane discography with amazing B-sides such as Don't Leave (Day By Day album)

Actually, of all T-ara's discography, "You drive me crazy" it is one of the ones that I like the least exactly because of the effects on the girls' voices ... I end up liking myself over time haha
Almost all the girls of t-ara acted in some horror film work ... I think that's why they became my favorite group haha
Your choices of song for this ' reaction' kinda interesting. as a queen (thats what they called, t-ara fans) we love every songs from them, but for a newbie I think its best to listen their most popular song first like roly poly, lovey dovey, or even sugar free. The (over)use if vocal effects is very much a product of the time when the song was released. Nearly all songs around that time heavily used similar effects, which seen fresh today, I can totally see it seeming a bit much; yet, for me, it's nostalgic.

1. A lot of people get Britney Spears vibes from T-ara.
2. The MV for the non-ballad version of "Lie" is more normal. It features guys cheating on the members.
3. If you liked the movie feel of the "Lie" MV, then you really need to watch the drama versions of "Day by Day" and "Sexy Love" (in that order - it is a continuous story) as well as the drama versions of "Cry Cry" and "Lovey Dovey" (again, in that order). Set aside about 30 minutes per pair. "Roly Poly" also has a drama version MV; I think it is around 10 minutes long.

You choose the wrong MV for "Cry Cry". Look the Drama-Version in Combination with the Drama-MV from "Lovey Dovey" and you forget all the Britney-Comparisons.
I've Watched that kdrama.. if I'm not mistaken it's title is "soul".. jiyeon is a part of that kdrama and because of that I started following t-ara.. and they are my fave girl group until now..☺️ I m still happy you are reacting to their songs and it's okay if you're not into them the fact you are trying to watch and listen to them I wanted to thank you 😊❤️

you will see that there are drama versions of some of their videos. You should avoid those. Unless you are a devoted fan they are just long. too bad you watched the wrong cry cry mv, the drama one is way better, and if you’ve seen the performance i think watching the performance mv is a bit pointless cause there isnt that much difference just better camera works and audio
