- In this one-off special to mark the anniversary of D-Day, the actress Vicky McClure embarks on an emotional journey with her 97-year-old grandfather, Ralph, to learn about his role in the most extraordinary single day of the Second World War. Vicky sets out to understand how Ralph - then still a teenager from Nottingham - found himself in the Royal Navy and at the centre of a world-changing battle on the Normandy beaches on June 6, 1944. The pair visit the only surviving example of the type of landing craft he trained and crossed the Channel on, and discover aerial pictures believed to show his flotilla landing at Normandy - before travelling back to the beach he last visited almost 80 years ago. The fact is that as I was on my way home the team told me cameras went on filming while I had in mind nothing had been filmed I came back thinking I hope I see the result one day and I did ! 😀 happy guy I told Vicky I had a satellite dish and I already knew Itv 1
It was lovely for you to stop and give your respect to him. Sadly it is either not known/taught to a lot of today's youth about what those men went through, not only that day but every day, so that we are free today.

I was there last june and will be again this year for probably my final visit to remember those brave men, an Uncle of mine landed on Gold beach on D-Day he was KIA on the 18th of June fighting between Bayeux and Caen, it's almost unbelievable he was just 17 years old, i visited his grave last year in Bayeux.

My mother and I visited the Beaches of Normandy in 2000. Moving experience to stroll the sand of Omaha Beach. My uncle, my mother’s brother, was killed in action in North Africa in November 1942. My siblings and I never had a chance to know our uncle.
The Greatest Generation, the likes of which we will never see again. Men of character and undaunted courage, to quote historian Stephen Ambrose.
My father landed on Omaha Beach. We lost him a few years ago at the age of 92. He wore his WWII Veteran cap proudly. When he came home to America he brought a French war bride and an eight month baby girl - me - with him.
Ms. McClure you are lucky to still have your grandfather in tour life.
Your father's legacy lives on in you and your family. Thank you for taking the time to share his story. How wonderful it is that you are a living part of that story; the new life that came into the world as a result of the choices that generation made to serve, to sacrifice, and to save.

We are all the French man on the beach - showing our utmost respect and gratitude.
So moving to see that man greeting this vet. I’m in tears. I never realised how much it meant to the freedom of the world. 80 years later, I thank them all.
That’s beautiful, my grandfather was there but passed away in 2021.
Everyone should be as grateful as that French gentleman .

Wow, my grandad was there too. My nana always said he was never the same man when he came back. He passed away in 1952 aged only 40 years old.
What a remarkable man and what a wonderful moment. My dad landed on Juno Beach alongside the Canadians. He passed away in 2003.
He fought for my freedom, incredible heroes.🙏 I went from Holland to the beaches there a few times already, just because we must walk there, and feel what they did for freedom, what they did for us.
@@johannes2489 Each countries remembers ww2 differently. I have had the great privilege of retracing some of my grandfathers journey from the beaches though holland. The dutch have a particular fantastic tradition of remembrance. A friend took us to a number of cemeteries in the Netherlands all immaculately maintained as i understand by locals. School children are taught a ton about the war, some towns learn of the particular unit and men who liberated them. In my short visits in the rain, out of the way cemeteries i would expect to be empty had the odd group passing though, these were not tourists as i was but dutch paying their respects. The visitor books were packed full of notes. many other books i have looked at in other countries had many years of visitors notes as they were not visited frequently, but these books in holland were full. My friends read a few of the notes, one stuck with me in particular. It said something about i thank you for your sacrifice for ever day i enjoy my freedom. There was always a good bond when traveling in holland especially when getting into history and the bonds with Canada. It is sort of a funny odd frendship that has no other particular reason to be other than born out of our shared experiences in ww2.

Im a 77year old granddad and visited the D Day beaches and war graves years ago, poor health will take me soon but i enjoyed freedom because of the sacrifices of his generation. ❤

Bawling my eyes out here in Australia. My late father & his four brothers fought the Japanese in New Guinea. All gone now. But a sincere thank you to your “Granddad”, all his mates, & all allies for laying their lives on the line all those years ago. So you should be proud of him! Dear Vicky thank you for taking your grandad Ralph to Normandy and the landing beaches.
My father was a Welsh Guardsman and served from 1938 till 1944, he went to France with the BEF and was evacuated in 1940. Don't know what he did apart from guarding Buckingham Palace and the Bank of England. plus training of course for D Day when he went back for a second time. I was born in the April of 1945 from mum and dads celebration of wars end.
In 1995 I bought one of the famous Dunkirk Little Ships and in 2000, 2005 and 2010 had the pleasure of sailing Lazy Days across the channel with many of the Association of Dunkirk Little Ships fine fleet. We would be the guests of the town of Dunkirk and many Dunkirk Veterans would make the crossing by ferry and we'd join them in a service of remembrance. During the 15 years I owned Lazy Days I would meet many vets as I sailed her along the UKs rivers and the east coast. It's a strange feeling to have a gentleman salute your boat as we passed through a lock or moored in a harbour. They of course were welcomed onboard for a cup of tea laced with brown milk.

Vicky, Ralph is a member of a very special generation and I would like to thank him for the things he did. My Father (who had me late in life) served right through the war from 2nd September 1939 the day before war was declared, to Dunkirk evacuation, to The North African campaign, then up through Italy, where he was demobbed. He lost a lot of friends in many battles, and I know it affected him that he could never sleep soundly afterwards. He passed when I was 19, but I would like your grandad and the men like him to know how proud I am of my father, and those who served around them throughout the war. Thank Ralph.
What a great moment. I am always impressed how middle age and older French have never forgotten those days in 1944. Hopefully the younger generation will continue that tradition even when all of the greatest generation are gone.
It's rare that an individual can be viewed as "everyman". A Frenchman walking on his beach extends the deep gratitude felt by all who thank this veteran for his unselfish actions so long ago.
Thank you for recording the spoken word of a veteran from that day. I think if the general public understood the human cost of taking that beach - wave after wave of troops being cut down as they tried to come ashore - they might not take their freedoms for granted.
We can never repay what we owe to those brave men. Many of whom never lived to see home again. For without their sacrifices we would have none of the freedoms we enjoy today.
For a starter we could try to stop the extreme right from repeating history by elections in the democracy these men and women gave us.

When I backpacked around Europe in the 80’s, I went through customs and the older gentleman there looked at my passport and his eyes lit up, and in French said, “Oh, our Canadian brothers!” They were so grateful for what the Canadian contingent accomplished in their liberation. I’ll never forget that moment, and felt so proud.

if not for their sacrifice, the world would look very different today, and many of us wouldnt be here
my grandfather served in the military from 1941-45. wounded 3 times. his whole family was killed by the nazi's. he was the only survivor. he never once spoke of that time in his life. never wanted to relive it. but every v-day he'd put on his military uniform with all his medals. he was proud that he liberated the world from the worst evil that ever existed. i'm in tears just thinking about him. bec most of the world has no clue how brave these soldiers were. no idea how important that moment in history is.

This was absolutely a Happy Heart Breaking Video. Tears are in my eyes as I try to type. First a Thank You to the soldier for what he did for freedom. Plus his granddaughter for bringing him to that beach and honoring her Brave Grandad Soldier. But! For the passerby to come upon them and to PAY HONOR AND RESPECT AND A THANK YOU FOR HIS SERVICE THAT DAY. Priceless!!!!!!! He was talking about the RAF in the Battle of Britain at the time. But he would have been pleased to know that his words are still remembered today and used to honour those brave veterans of D-Day.

Wow! I visited Ouistreham some twenty years ago and saw the beach and some of the houses filmed back in June 1944, yet this short video tops everything. Hard to put the gratitude of my generation that were born after the war into words, other than to say thank you so much.

I visited those beaches for the 50th anniversary, I want to thank your grandfather and his comrades for giving me the life I have now. My grandfather passed away in 1988, I missed the opportunity to get his story.
I have been to the Normandy beaches twice and the American cemetery at Omaha….the energy of sorrow is palpable,….so important to visit with gratitude. ❤️❤️❤️

It was a pleasure to watch the encounter of the two gentlemen. One of which participated in a world changing event that countless others benefited from including the onlooker on the beach who showed his appreciation and respect for his participation decades before.
