  • In this one-off special to mark the anniversary of D-Day, the actress Vicky McClure embarks on an emotional journey with her 97-year-old grandfather, Ralph, to learn about his role in the most extraordinary single day of the Second World War. Vicky sets out to understand how Ralph - then still a teenager from Nottingham - found himself in the Royal Navy and at the centre of a world-changing battle on the Normandy beaches on June 6, 1944. The pair visit the only surviving example of the type of landing craft he trained and crossed the Channel on, and discover aerial pictures believed to show his flotilla landing at Normandy - before travelling back to the beach he last visited almost 80 years ago. Hello I am the french man who met Ralph McCure on sword beach and I’ll keep this good memory for my whole life. You can see us shaking hands in this movie. I love this whole story, Ralph is so humble ! Vicky is very lucky to have such a granpa and her movie is a loving testimony she can be very proud of.
Vicky if you come back to Ouistreham I’ll be very happy to invite you for a cup of tea, I live 200 meters far from the site where we were filmed together !
    Long life to Ralph !

The younger generation should watch this and then look at the sacrifices that allowed them their freedoms of today.
Personally I am embarrassed at how the subsequent generations have abused those sacrifices with their constant whining and ridiculous laws that in the cold light of day are utterly ludicrous and irrelevant.
Thank you Ralph for putting others first and forgoing your youth and for enduring a lifetime of PTSD.

I watched this in awe yesterday and with leaky eyes 😢. There's something about that generation that is inspiring in its modesty. Their achievements are profound. Our grandparents saved the world from a hideous future in which our generation simply wouldn't exist.
The difference between the young boys that took on Hitlers thugs and the current youth who fall apart if their wifi goes down is unbelievable.

I wish more than anything to be able to do this with my grandad who would be 99 years old. He passed in 94’. Hold yours tight. Ask any and all questions. When they’re gone it’s a void you can’t replace. I salute you for doing this. I thank your grandad for his service. Not only to Britain but to the world.

I was on HMS Fearless in 1994 when we to part in the 50th anniversary of the D Day landings, had the privilege to meet some of the veterans from that day who were at the pointy end, all sprightly 70 year olds. Very humbling, all there to visit the lads who now lie sleeping in a foreign land, there is a reason they are called the greatest generation., the numbers have diminished over the years, only a few left. Lest we Forget, We will Remember them.m

Hats off to that gent! We just don't make 'em like that anymore I don't believe. Not in the UK or here in the states. The selfless sense of obligation when duty called. God bless him and welcome his soul when it's time!

My father also landed on this day, maybe on Vicks grandads ship, to drive a tank on sword beach on d day. Such brave men must never be forgotten. In their 90s - Full of smiles, positive and not winging like the younger generations now… There will never be men like them again….

Total respect to you Sir for all you did, how many can say they knew of what their father or grandfather did in ww11, if they are alive, ask them, maybe they will tell you, maybe they won’t, but ask, it’s all part of a families history that should be remembered and documented

I must say as an American with a British Mother and Family I am very proud of all of their service in WWll and my Grandads service in WWl in the RFC. To see a modern actress who obviously loves her Grandad take the time to put on a uniform and kit and attempt to walk a shore is refreshing. I have a respect for her that I do not have for many of her peers, may God Bless her and of course her Granddad as they are our greatest generation on either side of the pond.

I don't know about schools now, but back in the 1980s, we got taught about the 1940s war/life in the UK.
I think it should always be given a lot of time because of the lessons to be learned from war/the hardships/people/how we had to "make do and mend"/day-to-day life/community spirit and so on. It's a good thing to be able to see what real hardships were vs the life we live today.

This reminds me of my Dad who was a stretcher bearer from before Dunkerque to North Africa and Italy to Trieste. It also reminds me of the fact that the Europe for which they fought to liberate is now denied to us for 90 out of 180 days . This is wrong.
