- A lot of time has passed, but how do British and German veterans view each other today?
We introduced two of them to each other, for the first time.

Putting politics to one side is difficult, but for German veterans coming back, the memories are no less painful. Thousands of them died on D-Day.

My grandfather fought in WWII. He never really talked about it but I remember he once said he "Didn't risk his life to be disrespected by young kids" and that said a lot.

As someone who's Grandfather fought at Dunkirk for the UK and who's great uncle who fought at Stalingrad for Germany, this is beautiful to watch
May I ask a question. What happened to him at Stallingrad. The majority who surrendered died from the Soviets so I’m just curious.

Your great uncle did not "fought at Stalingrag", he was one of those who tried to occupy our country which lead to huge amount of deaths. This city still has some ruined buildings in the memory of our fallen soldiers and the crime committed by german murderers including the one from your family

It is injust for milions to die because some few decited to start a war to expand their borders. And i'm not talking about the wars for indipendence and i don't mean that a country shouldn't fight for its freedom in case of an invasion. No. Theese wars started from an agressor, there whouldn't be a need for an indipendence war if some agressor DIDN'T START A WAR FROM THE FIRST PLACE. So consequently, all wars are pointles because there is no point IN STARTING this chain reaction, of invasion and then deefence or independence war. Yes there is, OBVIOUSLY, a point and reason in defending yourself and/or fighting for your freedom, there is no HUMANE reason or point in INVADING one another, INITIALY. The only reason that wars START is because some countries want to controll or take natural resourses from other countries. So that, in a colective point of view, from a HUMANITY point of view, is against our inteligence as a species, aka, we have inteligence, we should be able to grow better than this.

I`ve talked to some war vets too and if you really dig a bit and they are willing to talk about it, you can still see that they are still heartwounded.

To hear the German speak English in the same accent as my great-grandfather brought back so many memories. Our family had emigrated before WWI even, but they spoke German in the house. They were from Pomerania as well.

It started as a horrible fight against eachother on a battlefield, and it ended with a forgiving handshake in a restaurant. Truly wholesome and heartwarming. It's one of those things that give me back faith in humanity.

My great-grandpa served in WWII as an engineer in Northern Africa, but was at the beaches on D-Day. He was lucky enough to survive.
My great grandfather was a major at el alamein leading the royal engineers, what was his name?

My Father served in the US Army during the Reconstruction in Germany and was impressed with it's beauty....Mother joined him but stayed in Luxemburg. They returned to Germany along with Switzerland many times. This foray in Europe ignited a passion for travel by many stationed there. My Father is 94 today and I'm grateful to be spending the day with him.

My Great grandad died during the end of WW2 during the Battle of the Bulge, I hope he is doing okay in heaven, and I would like to thank him for his service to the British Army. He is part of the reason why most of Europe isn’t speaking German right now. Although you can’t blame the German soldiers, they were forced into the army and to fight for their country when some didn’t want to.

Speaking German is optional. Actually a lot of people know it and speak it, in fact the English language is heavily based on the old Germanic language. Germany survived the nazis. BUT it was because of the allies and the cause and end of WW1 that enabled hitler and his nazis to rise to power. HAD the allies fought with Germany against nazi russia, Things would have gone very differently.
He sounds like a brave man, in heaven though he has learned that the side he fought for allowed Communism to spread through Europe and its wrath to kill millions of innocents. Only if the British joined the Germans in the crusade things might of been different.
He’s part of the reason Europe is being invaded by non-Europeans. But at least you’re not speaking German hur dur…
this is the kind of new coverage that we need . its hard to say we should come togeother and resolve differneces . but after such a long time . both opposing sides had to see friends die . the memories of those will stick with them and both sides usually decide that war was pointless and that we all are after the same life

We should still give a big thank you for saving the world on your side, even if in history it was an axis power. Everyone, from no matter where, deserves equal respect as to others. Thank you. Protect WW2 veterans at all cost. These men are the last witnesses of the war. Once they die we will only be left with history books. No more new stories, that’s it.
We live in their last years and days of their valuable life ..In their mind they have many bad experiences that this war caused to everyone and soldier and citizen. So we must protect them at all cost and show them not only the great respect that they deserve as old wise men-women, but also our great love and compassion on their last time on this earth..These Great Old VETERANS will remain always in our Hearts as Victims and Survivors of WWII

Today, in preparation of visiting Normandy, i am showing this to my 11 year old son. In my opinion this is basic stuff in everyones education. We can learn so much from these men.

My great grandpa served in ww1 as a british indian soilder and fought in verdun at 18. He also took part in ww2 for the british in burma against japan. He also fought in china in 1944, he lived till '81
Meanwhile my grandpa fought for azad hind in ww2 and moved to japan after ww2. He lived till 2014.
hey im indian as well. my great gramps fought in France and later in Mesopotamia during the gr8 war but i dont think indians fought in verdun.And also my grandfathers eldest brother fought in the azad hind fauj while his cousin was part of the tiger legion aka azad hind fauj formed in germany by subhash chandra bose

@@RRAG-ux9ko for some reason my great gramps did, i dont really remember too well tho, that was like 5-6 months ago when i found the letter, but since the last month its missing, the letter was basically explaining how my great gramps was in verdun, idk what word u use but its like they stationed him there as a reserve.... i guess i will try finding it, ill also ask my grandmother (daughter to my great grandpa) about what my great gramps stories were, but for that i must visit where she lives, durgapur, anyways, nice having have had talked with you, hope i can find out more about my great grandpa
wow it's amazing at getting to hear from both sides of the war and what they had to endure. My family who is German on both sides of my family its truly spectacular to know 50 years from now this will be something that we can look back on and ponder as a place in time that happened long ago but will never be forgotten.
Not all Germans at that time nor the people who fought for Germany were "Nazis". These men have my respect & admiration in the highest regard.

@Eric Chambers well it depends at what time in the war and what unit if it was an SS or wehrmacht soldier from 1939 to maybe 1942 they would very likely trust in Hitler and believe they are doing what is right for the country as losses (not casualties I meant losing a battle) where small and on the whole until late 1942 the germans were holding out pretty well but if you get into mid/late 1943-1944 things would prolly start to change especially in areas like the North African campaign or the eastern front were troops had either had suffered great defeat as in the north African campaign or had suffered both extremely heavy casualties and defeats as in the eastern front which by 1944 the germans were definitely on the fall back so in that case it would still be likely that a good amount of SS soldiers would be loyal though some wehrmacht elements and even some SS would probably be having doubts in Hitler by then and by 1945 most units had pretty much lost hope in the war I mean of course they still fought hard even then but especially in the case of volksturm units and other hastly thrown together forces and many wehrmacht units would probably have realised by then that Hitler's dream were a bunch of horseshit and the war was probably lost for them I mean when an alliance from the western front is steadily making it's way from the west and the Soviets are steamrolling through the east do you really think anyone at that point in time that wasnt a nazi fanatic really thought they could come out of the war victorious or that they could even stop half the enemy's I mean by late 1945 most German units were probably more concerned of the fact that they should better surrender to the Brits or the Americans then the Soviets because the Soviets would probably just either kill you or send you off to a tough labor camp then the thought of a strategic defense for the fatherland and Hitler

I was the best friend and carer of a WW2 hero. Denis Elliott was Royal Air Force bomber pilot who flew 3543 hours during his RAF career. After he almost died in 2018, I managed to convince him to let me help him record his incredible life story. The result is our book: From Orphan to High-Flyer
By his own admission, he was an frightened orphan with the wrong surname who was beaten by his violent first foster father. Yet WW2 changed his life, and the transformation he underwent is truly incredible. From the child he was to captaining RAF B-24 Liberators against the Japanese at age 20 (overcoming: anti aircraft fire, monsoon weather, seeing friends get shot down and much more)...incredible.
He was the greatest man I ever met and changed my life completely.

@@mustardpower7123 During situations of pain and death the true face of people is revealed. And that also means that there is much space for greatness. Maybe the great people might be a big minority but they shine brighter than it would have been ever possible during peace times.
Also during those times when the virus is raging in several countries there are people that sacrifice much and show how great they are.
An italian priest, for example, gave his respirator to a much younger person who wouldn't have made it otherwise. He knew he wouldn't make it himself without the respirator but it was a true act of selflessness. He died shortly after but the young person survived.
Those people might be rare but they exist. And those are deeds that deserve high praise and respect.

Back in school I participated in an exchange program. A french girl stayed with my german family for a few weeks. My grandfather was eager to meet her. I told her in advance that he had been a prisoner of war in France and was keen to dig out the French he had learned back then. Before being imprisoned he had to fight against the French and I don’t know what his believes were during that time, I don’t know if he had adopted this idea of “German superiority” that was drummed into young people back then or if he merely didn’t have a choice. Anyway, during his imprisonment he was treated kindly by the French and he grew to like them. My exchange sister then told me that her grandfather had to fight in WW2 as well and that he had been captured by the German. That was a very defining moment in my life. There we where, two girls of the same age, sharing dreams and hopes for a good future and becoming friends while two generations ago our grandfathers might have killed each other. It shouldn’t have taken a war for them to get to know each other’s culture and I want to believe that the people of their generation would have made other choices if they had had the same opportunities as we did. So, continue building bridges people.
It is beautiful to see them respect each other, both knowing that they fought for their country and don’t hate each other now for what their countries did, because it wasnt their fault
These men were never bad or evil people, nor were they really enemies of each other. They were just following orders. And doing what they believed was the right thing.

My great grandads fought in world war 2. Luckily they both survived, And Rest in peace to those who did not.
I was there in Cotentin quite by accident the week after this interview was filmed. But I soon twigged and spent two incredible weeks touring the beaches and following the liberation routes up to Cherbourg and right down to St Lo. I met some remarkable people on the way and had the most moving, wonderful experience of my life.
2019. Those were the days.
In 70 years I get to tell my future generation about the time we got stuck in quarantine and did absolutely nothing. lol

And i would advice not to use the "good old nazi tactic" of claiming they where only pawns in Hitlers game. "Only following orders".. We have heard it all to often. Yet not nearly enough, as many nazies wherent even prosecuted for their crimes against humanity.
This german soldier has to live the rest of his life with the consequences of his actions. And they where his actions. He was a murderer, who where part of the nazi machinery. They wherent prisoners of Hitler these people. They idolized Hitler, they handed him the power. Many of these soldiers fought in Berlin to the very end. Even the youth. Long after the war was lost.
Its true they feared the soviet soldiers more than the english ones. Because the soviet soldiers where ruthless.. Its why many germans commited suicide before the soviet army reached Berlin. They feared facing justice. Cowards. And i suspect its no different with this old nazi you seem to think time has healed the consequences of his actions.

The respect between the regular British, American and German soldiers back in the war was already there. If the Germans found dead British men they gave them a respectful funeral with the British flag etc.
