- In this one-off special to mark the anniversary of D-Day, the actress Vicky McClure embarks on an emotional journey with her 97-year-old grandfather, Ralph, to learn about his role in the most extraordinary single day of the Second World War. Vicky sets out to understand how Ralph - then still a teenager from Nottingham - found himself in the Royal Navy and at the centre of a world-changing battle on the Normandy beaches on June 6, 1944. The pair visit the only surviving example of the type of landing craft he trained and crossed the Channel on, and discover aerial pictures believed to show his flotilla landing at Normandy - before travelling back to the beach he last visited almost 80 years ago. I bet your Granddad is as proud of you as you are of him. Two lovely people.
Just doing a job. So modest and unassuming. The stamp of a generation who gave their hearts defending the freedom we take for granted today. God bless you.
My grandad had the same attitude. Brings tears to my eyes the horrors they witnessed. Special men. Such a special generation. Miss them now more than ever. God bless them. Hold onto him tight. I’d give anything to be able to sail the pacific aboard a destroyer with mine. 1000’s of questions. Miss him dearly.
Mr. McClure is truly one of the Greatest Generation!!!
Rough but enough, bless him , what a guy ❤
What a lovely short doco...You can tell they adore one another...she''ll be shattered when she loses her Pop...but what memories she will have...
My dad was a tank driver with the 9th royal Liverpool regiment on that historic day, this dear man may well have transported him into battle. Brave brave men…. God bless them we can never repay their sacrifices 🙏
I'm British, but have lived in France for many years. Thanks to your Grandad and many others like him, I, and the French, can enjoy the freedom we have today. God bless.
Vicky McClure lives in the little suburb i was born in in Nottingham - toton. Not far at all from where i live now in fact. She's much loved and respected in Nottingham .
Just doing a job, bit of an understatement. Then after the war he would have just gotten a regular old civilian job and did his 9 to 5, without probable thinking to much about his role, what he did in the war.
I wish I had talked to my grandpa more. He told me stuff but not my dad. I only found out he was shot down a few years ago possibly in a Wellington or Lancaster and his crew mate had to hang on to him as for some reason the other guy didn't have a parachute. They were arrested by locals until they were identified as UK RAF. He was awarded the DFC. He did so many things we weren't aware of
What a fantastic gentleman / seaman 'just doing a job'! Vicky quite rightly proud of her grandad!
I met some of these characters when I was onboard HMS Fearless at the 50th anniversary of D Day. A humbling experience and a privilege, all very modest and all visiting the real heroes those who lie a sleep in a foreign land. Shared a few beers 🍻 with them in the Chiefs Mess.
A true hero
“Ave ya got the wheelaase?” Hahaha. Brilliant.
Imagine how pear shaped the situation must have been for a signaller to end up behind a 20mm fending off E-Boats. He sounded like it was just another day at work.
A beautiful tribute from her to her granddad!
D-Day was the largest amphibious invasion in the history of warfare. Code-named 'Operation Overlord,' the stats are staggering. The Allies used over 5,000 ships and landing craft to land more than 150,000 troops on five beaches in Normandy not including 24,000 American, British, and Canadian airborne troops. Most were still just teenagers!
Despite massive bombardment from the sea and air to soften the German defenses, 4,400 Americans, Brits and Canadian troops died under withering German machine gun fire on the beaches on D-Day! The Allies took approximately 10,250 casualties on D-Day. This total includes killed, wounded, and missing servicemen, as well as those casualties from the airborne assault under Operation Tonga.
13,100 American paratroopers from the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions as well as 4,000 infantrymen in gliders were dropped behind enemy lines in Normandy via two parachute and six glider missions on D-Day! They knew that if the beach landings failed, they would be stranded!
THE GREATEST GENERATION!
What a remarkable man you sir are a hero thank you
Back in the day your Dad was known as a “Bunting Tosser” the man who threw his halyard full of flags into the air then pulled the signal up. Brave man, wonderful sense of humour. Long may he keep you happy.
Awwww ---these two are delightful to watch --lots of love between them!
Vicky is one of the most beautiful woman on earth. Her grandad is amazing.
Wow, beautiful moment .❤
I remember that Vessel when it was called, The Clubship Landfall. It was moored just near where the Liverpool Museum is now. It didn`t look as spick and span as it does now.
The Greatest Generation
Thank you sir 🫡🩷
"Just doing a job." = I can't share the details with you, my beautiful Granddaughter.
---------- God bless you both, your grand dad is priceless and still to this day doesn't completely realize what he and his fellow angels did to save the world from true evil! If I may be so bold would you please give him a kiss for us and by us I mean the world! ------

How did they manage to keep such a huge endeavour a secret ?!
Men of steel.
Why doesn't he have LORD in front of his name when that prat Cameron does.
Cameras title should be Lord fraud😡. Probably same as most that get it. These guys should have free everything, energy, homes, transport, phones, TV etc etc. What a pitiful country this is.
All about you love isn't it?????
Asking a sailor if he 'rodger' ?
I can't think off a fitting comment, nevertheless, let my respectful silence be my offering.
Silence truly is golden here…
Built by Americans and like 5 Canadians.....
