If it broke when it was still a solid piece, how will it hold up now that it is three pieces joined by a thread and a surface weld? It will break with half the effort.
Considering he tightens it with a pipe wrench directly on teeth of gear, I don't think it's that big of a deal. Work with what you got basically. He probably has 30/30 warranty, 30 feet or 30 seconds, which ever comes first.
This reminds me of the old smithy where I was allowed to make these kind of repairs when I was a apprentice. Keeping the old machines up and running with repairs instead of expensive new parts. Nowadays we just throw it in the bin and get new parts or even scrapping the whole thing. But hey, modern times, modern ways. Love to watch these guys.

Yeah, with what he has to work with and doing it wearing sandals, my hat is off to the man. Couple things, I’m no welder, but I know that that kind of a shaft with that kind of a weld when you change the metallurgy like that and you don’t do a preheat and a post heat and all other stuff, it’s bound to fail in service as someone wrote with half of the torque that it took to break it originally. Second It’s really hard on the machine tool to be welding over the bed without any protection that way, and I know they could at least throw a piece of burlap over it to protect lathe, which seems to be a pretty nice lathe. One last thing, since I am by trade a repair machinist, he probably doesn’t have a dial indicator, but to make sure those two ends of the shaft are running true when you do your stubbing is absolutely essential for it to run properly in service.
I did this kind of work in my dad’s shop.HOPEFULLY he is doing this to get the machine running and orders a new part or find the whole unit.🤷♀️Love the safety sandals.😂

Yo reparé un eje palier de un camion de alto tonelaje con una espiga en el medio..y despues con soldadura 680..y trabajo durante varios años..subia cuestas cargado y bajaba sin problemas..transportaba 30 ton.
I think they could have used a milling machine to finish the grooves, and used a spline shaft instead threads , but it would make the repair far more expensive.
