    Update! The 3rd unit that I was still using has the humidity reading issue again. I now only use it with the timer function to avoid any 85% humidity issues.
    Also, I still use the container, but the humidifier is propped on blocks of wood. That way if/when it leaks, it will not damage the Levoit or chance a fire. Safety first!

    I’ve had really good luck with the Elechomes SH8820! It’s a top fill humidifier that has all the features of the Levoit but a very slightly smaller tank (5.5L instead of 6). I’ve had no leaking issues and filling it up is sooooo much easier than a bottom fill humidifier.

    • @SoiledPlant
      @SoiledPlant  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will never buy a bottom fill unit again. 😆 The Elechomes units look nice, but are so pricy! They make me nervous!

    Thank you for sharing your experience. I feel this helps to cement my decision to go with an Elechomes humidifier instead of the Levoit. If something only has one job to do then it should be done flawlessly. ANYONE can make a humidifier that leaks, but the customer shouldn't be charged top dollar for it. I would expect these problems from cheap £10-20 unit, not one of the most expensive ones on the market. Shame on Levoit.

    You could fill your container with pea gravel and place the unit on the gravel so that if it leaks it will not get into the power components and cause possible fire issues. Also this may help with the humidity issues.

    • @SoiledPlant
      @SoiledPlant  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve been propping up the humidifier with wood blocks. That way it’s off the bottom while also leaving the majority of the container volume open.

  • @media1981
    @media1981 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’m using hupro cool and warm mist humidifier and it’s got unable to leak constuction as the tank sits inside the unit and it’s top fill so easy to refill the tank. Never had an issue and pretty accurate humidity reading as well. If yours fails again, be sure to check this model. I highly recommend!

    • @SoiledPlant
      @SoiledPlant  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I loooove top fill. That’s the biggest drawback of 90% of humidifiers. I will definitely check those out.

  • @rballz
    @rballz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I had one of these run away like you described in my music room yesterday. I had 100% humidity, guitars with water droplets on them. Now the unit thinks it's 90% all the time and won't turn on. The hygrometers in these are terrible and that's the problem I think. Hard to trust these to handle our important things like our plants or in my case - wooden instruments.

    • @SoiledPlant
      @SoiledPlant  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. I’m sorry you went through that. Guitars >>> plants when it comes to risk with high humidity.

    For your table: they sell a wood veneer that comes with adhesive on the back already that is pretty easy to install. We used it for a dining room table. You may be able to find a woodworker or furniture place that could do it easily for you. They come in all kinds of wood types and are easy to install and seal/stain to match you current piece.

    • @SoiledPlant
      @SoiledPlant  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wonder if I could find someone willing to do house visits and do that. The table is insanely heavy. Moving it back and forth would be a chore and a half.

    • @razetw
      @razetw 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Get a $15 electric square sander. 120 grit to rough up the surface and get any water or gel wood stain. Then top coat with poly. Pretty straight forward process and you don't need to replace the veneer. Doable if you don't expect perfect color matching but you can get close or even improve it. Diy it and save your antique.

    I have a similar system from no name brand for about 3 years, no problems so far. I set two rules for myself. 1) to use only distilled water and 2) never use any programming functions. Just turn it on manually for one hour in the morning and 2-3 hours in the evening. We live near the big construction site and the power shortage can happen several times a day. Once after such case all electrical devices in my fish tank just exploded, fish dead, antic drawer damaged. That was enough. No timers, no scheduled evaporation, etc .

    Thank you for your video and some very good points. I did my research and ordered the LV 600S newer unit with top loading and much better and easier access for cleaning. I will also use an independent hygrometer to check the actual humidity level. I just got my unit yesterday and did not see your review first. I also like the wifi integration along with mobile phone control and Alexa integration.

    Sorry to hear about the damage - I use a top fill humidifier so I only have to take it off the base to clean it and the cord that plugs into the wall also unplugs from the back of the unit - makes it a lot easier to move it to clean it. I bought it on Amazon but I don't see it for sale anymore Taotronics (I also use filtered water) I just put mine (I have 3) away for the summer and will bring them out next fall but they don't seem to hold as much water as yours maybe a couple of liters.

    WARNING! I would really warn you that putting the humidifier in the ikea container is such a terrible and dangerous idea. In the event of another leak, the whole water that is saved and kept by the container will itself leak into the humidifier internal parts INCLUDING the power circuit causing a severe circuit short. I would advise everyone not to do that.

  • @davefinkel6884
    @davefinkel6884 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would not suggest that you put the humidifier in any container. Simply because if dose leak it’s also going to electrocute and blow a fuse/circuit breaker and you may possibly get electrocuted if you are standing in any water.

    for the end part of your video with the 'solution' id say dont fill it up fully just incase. you dont want too much water in the tray if it does leak coz it will fill the tray to much, electrics and water big no no obviously

    • @SoiledPlant
      @SoiledPlant  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s on a surge protector, but it would be easier to prop it up higher. So it’s not directly on the bottom of the container. Make it hover a little bit.

    You may want to consider putting some holes into the lid of the prop box, put the lid onto the box, and put the humidifier onto the prop box lid. Any leakage should drain into the box, and the humidifier won't be sitting in water...electrical issue?

    • @SoiledPlant
      @SoiledPlant  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Everything plugs into a surge protector. The holes would have to be fairly large to get the water to go in without skirting over it and spilling over the sides. May just put wood blocks under the humidifier while still in the box.
