  • I have a kayak and I have a Paddle Board so which one is better. I don't really know. I've never been on a paddle board before today. Both the Pelican kayak And Goosehill Inflatable Stand-Up Paddle Board just came in the mail. So let's head down to the lake and figure out what's the best Kayak Vs Paddle Board for the win. What's a better investment, more comfortable, easier to use, And just downright fun. The Kayak or the paddleboard?

    Btw, u can get non inflatable paddle boards and inflatable kayaks, both take the same time to inflate because of pressure differences and size

      Agreed, you should compare a hard board to a hard Kayak or inflatable to inflatable. You will always give up some performance and take longer with an inflatable board or Kayak to set up and break down.

    You can buy a blow up kayak, and also a hard body stand up paddle board. You should try again comparing blow ups of each and hard bodies of each.

      A hard paddleboard should be more relatively easier to remount; and I get the joke that people who could fall off a bit easily.
      Overall I think paddleboards would be much easier to mount contrary to the way he acted in the video; I think when it comes to remounting a kayak in the middle of the water it’s very difficult.

    I always recommend a paddleboard over a kayak. Paddleboards can be modified with a seat if desired. I actually paddle with and sit on top of my Yeti 35 at times. Paddleboards are easier to transport. In the winter you don't get wet from paddle-wash like in kayaking--unless you fall in. Hard versus inflatable...that's another debate...

    Best thing about a SUP is being able to stand up and see the fish. Really makes a difference and nice being able to see what’s under and around you. The stability of a kayak is really nice.

    I used to use a Malibu fishing kayak that I could stand up in to sight cast. That led to standing to paddle to the next piece of fishy looking structure. Then one day I realized I spent more time standing on my kayak than I did sitting so I switched to a board. I will probably eventually get another kayak for late season use but the board will be my go to.

    I have both and they serve different purpose. I have a paddleboard in my truck all the time along with electric pump and a very small retractable fishing rod. In a hot day, I just jump into the river with my paddleboard, easy fishing along the river (not serious).... but for serous fishing trip, definitely my kayak.

    Hmm... Done kayak, inflatable kayak, standup,...... One tool for camping for light travel would be "packrafting". Top of the line is alpacka, nrs, kokoelli, aire etc.
    Now you can get Russian or Chinese built packrafts that are alpacka knockoffs. These rafts weigh like 7-10 pounds and are much smaller size wise than the kayak/standup alternatives. I bought one from eBay from eastern Europe for near 300 us dollars.
    The stand-ups are the most fun by far (especially in the ocean), the inflatable kayaks are stupid seaworthy/river capable with crazy payloads, a traditional kayak is much more fun to setup and use frequently or distance trips that require paddling..... However, if you need to hike a mountain, many milrs, or need something that can do it all (besides super long distance paddle trips).... Packrafts are king.

    I recognize that landing , my girlfriend and I have launched our kayaks there quite a few times and paddled all the way down to north pond. For the paddle board I would recommend lake st George for the paddle board. The swimming is better there but I would probably wait till next summer for that. Keep up the great videos.

    Keep my board inflated whole season and store it against ceiling in living room (looks really nice BTW). For winter deflated and stuck it into the wardrobe. Kayaking is absolutely possible with SUP. Elevated chair and kayak oar and of you go. The versatility of SUP is huge! What you haven't touch and it is very important is wind susceptibility. SUP is water gliding and is very susceptibility to wind. So on open water with winds above 15km/h it gets tricky. Where kayak is not gliding on water but cut in with the hull into the water body, so is not that susceptibility for wind

    Inflating an inflatable SUP is no small feat. It takes me 20 minutes for my 12.5' x 32", and it is more like weight training once the pressure gets over 8 psi. So your demonstration makes a good point. I am almost too exhausted to use it, but that is more about being out of shape after winter. Non-pressurized inflatables are definitely quicker and easier, but the performance sucks more. Being proportionately bigger to my board to what most people are, makes for a bigger challenge doing that standing thing, which I am still working on. Sitting is great, especially with the seat, which my SUP has spots to clip it on. Seen some people sitting on coolers and paddling.
    Best part of the SUP, is that it is totally flat, like a large empty room where you can furnish it howevere you like. One thing I don't like about my sit on top kayak, is that where I sit, where my feet go, has been decided for me. Getting in and out, I always have to be conscious of where I place my feet. But not having to inflate it is great and the internal storage is great. Plus it has peddles and a sail However, I also have to pay a large monthly fee to store it and have to travel an hour from home to use it. Meanwhile, I live only a ten minute walk from the water.
    I have heard there is a modular solid SUP that takes seconds to assemble, Easy Eddy. But it is probably too small for us bigger people. It is also much larger to pack.
    Great video by the way.

    I have both an inflatable and a rigid touring SUP and love them both. I can fish off my rigid (botē flood) and also sup camp or even surf. On a hot day I like to take a dip. The inflatable good for transport. Every time I see a kayaker I just feel they are not having as much fun as me lol.

    LOL ... You can use that inflatable board for fishing but, if your looking for a paddle board for fishing I recommend looking at the Sea Eagle SUP 126. I have it and its great! Its wider therefore more stable and has some nice accessories for fishing ... with seat that allows you to row like a kayak ... etc. It s great, you don't need a rack for the car to transport (all fits in my little Mazda 3 trunk) and I can store it in a closet ... great for living in apartments. I also use an electric pump sets up in 10 min and ready to go in about 15 min setting up all equipment for fishing. I would like a kayak also (perhaps someday) but this Sea Eagle SUP 126 works great. If you decide to get it ... here's some tips. I don't recommend the bravo electric air pump they sell ... after checking customers that got this on amazon it turns out they're not happy for it did not last very long. 2nd if you want an electric trolling motor shop around, seen the same one they recommend cheaper on Amazon. I just got the package with the seat (comes with Scotty Rod Holders) and EZ Cart for easy transport which is good if you can't set up near the shore ... etc. If you don't want the Scotty Rod Holders than just get basic package you can find a the same seat at Walmart for cheaper ... etc.

    I don’t care what anyone says, those backwell storage areas on argoes or any other sit in kayak are a bad design. Reaching backwards throws your center of balance off and I’m sure has led to fatal accidents.

    Kayak all the way! However, if you really want to hike up and paddle a lake or even carry a boat with you in your backpack or bike trip, I would go with a packraft all the way. Coming in at only 7-8 pounds, packs the size of a small tent and can carry up to 500 pounds of load...they are unbeatable for carrying. Plus they inflate really fast. Check out Alpacka or some other brands and do a demo.

    • @scottbates1424
      @scottbates1424 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually have the same kayak you were using and it’s been great. Just took it last weekend to the Boundary Waters in Minnesota near the Canadian border for a couple overnights and fishing. It worked great, but you do need to pack pretty like...and should avoid big waves out the middle of the lakes. Other than that it’s a winner and light enough to portage.

  • @cycologist7069
    @cycologist7069 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Kind of a odd comparison. I agree with you that it really depends on what you want to do with it but in this case your comparing an inflatable paddleboard with a not inflatable kayak so of course in this case the kayak is going to be less work to get it in the water. Inflatables are great for storage and transport but a hardboard is going the be no more work than your kayak. I too would prefer the kayak if I'm fishing but there are better boards out there specifically for fishing. They will have a wider hull.

    For anyone thinking about buying an inflatable kayak. Spoke to a couple on my last outing, she was in a single seater, he was in a tandem. They said don't bother with the single, get a 2 seater inflatable and use it as a single. It's doesn't cost that much more, takes up the same amount of space, and is way better on the water.

    • @timthorson52
      @timthorson52 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have both a one person and a 2 person one. I prefer a 2 person one, it's more stable, has a much higher weight capacity, I have more space, if I've got a buddy they can jump on and it's got more room for attachments. Even with 2 people I feel more stable than I did on the other one. I find the single person one stable enough, but the as a heavier person the added stability was nice.
      I don't fish, but I use it instead of my other one. The only downside is that it's a little bit slower on the water, but not dramatically. So if you want speed, get a single person or a smaller one with just over the weight capacity you need. Otherwise, get a 2 person one.

    A better comparison is kayak vs non-inflatable paddle board. The board is lighter to lift, easier to store, and the standup position allows you to see the marine life much more easily. If it's just a bit windy, forget about paddle boarding! I'm an avid kayaker, and the advantages of a kayak is there are a million uses for them, you can fish off them because they have much more space; you can go on long expeditions and even kayak camping in them. Kayaks and paddle board have completely different uses. If I have to chose one and I have space for it, I would chose the kayak.

    I fish off of my paddleboard and kayak. advantages of paddleboard fishing are that you can sight fish and cast better standing up. also take a medium size cooler and set it right behind your feet, then you can sit down when you want. Kayaks are better for fishing, but paddleboarding is more fun.

  • @macmurfy2jka
    @macmurfy2jka 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Stand up paddle boards are excellent for flat calm waters without much wind. Especially if you are hoping on and off the board often. Toss a milk create on the deck and you get a pretty great seating platform to fish off of. From the high vantage point it is really easy to see whats under you in the water. There’s a reason why bass boat have you standing up high on that deck, after all.
    Personally they require FAAAR more athletics to get the most out of them and you do have to go out expecting to go in the drink. For cold weather, a wet suite is a what you need. I’ve done entire days paddling down a river in one. I found it very enjoyable.
    That all said, I think you got the wrong board Fowler. For flat water touring and fishing I would have wanted a board that was at least 12 ft long and about 35 inches wide and with tiedowns for the front and back of the deck. With something like that you would be much happier.
    Also lengthen your paddle and inflate your board a bit more. You really want to take them right up to the boards limits as it makes the stiffer and thusly more rigid, powerful and stable.

    Like you said, both have their advantages. But you listed the advantages of a user, I wanted to give the advantages from a viewer.
    The advantages of the kayak is that you probably are more efficient and more effective. You will get more camera shots and probably better quality clips from the kayak. Plus you will probably do more fishing because you’re sitting rather than standing, so that’s more content.
    But with the paddle board you fall in the water more. And that’s great content.
    So it’s really 50:50

    Okay you falling on the paddle board seriously helped me feel a looooot better. 😭😭😭 Thank you! I kept falling because I would bend my knees to balance like a snowboard and that would make it worse.
    Apparently you have to do the opposite and lock your legs straight? I kept falling so much and was so sad and wet and embarrassed. 🤦‍♀️ Everyone was so good at it but me lol. Thanks for cheering me up!

    Not all inflatable paddle boards are created equal. Different boards displace different amounts of water are more stable because of hull design. Just like kayaks are not all created equal. You ever flip over your kayak over to see what happens?

    Extremely biased comparison, waste of my time haha. First time paddle boarding I never fell off, its not hard at all. Ive fished off both. I guess if you have as bad of balance as this guy go get a kayak. And I can pack as much on my paddle board as in his kayak. I like both

    Kayak sit on top only way to go if in all season weather If you tip a inside one out duck hunting or such it's going to be miserable you have to dump all OR most of the water out just to get back to shore and when it's ten foot deep or more probably not happening so you have to drag it back been down this road before testing and thinking what's best for me in all matters fishing hunting checking traps etc

    Have had a kayak and SUP
    1.sup is lighter to lift on/off the roof racks, while the yak was a nuisance lifting off a lifted 4wd...
    2.kayak easier stability for fishing but those rear storage makes my ribs strain so makes it useless for me.
    3. Sup you can have more fun...
    We sold our kayak n bought a boat to fish n sup for a family fun day out.
