I'm just past the learning stage and the tips that helped me are: 1) Bend the knees slightly. Gives you a little more bounce which absorbs wobbles more easily. 2) one foot slightly in front so you can balance front to back as well as side to side 3) relax and look ahead. Easy to say but the more you let your muscles relax the more your own body will automatically self correct. Actively trying to re-adjust is a little like when a car goes into a skid. Small calm movements are way better than stiff jerky corrections. 4) don't do it in choppy water. You want calm still water for learning. If you are around others get some distance. Even gentle ripples from kids playing is challenging for a beginner.
These are some great balance tips. Basically you want to relax and let your nervous system make the small balance adjustments, your brain is too slow and overreacts.

A great video. You explained everything I want to know. Thanks a lot. I was looking for someone to give me a lesson. But now I think I can teach myself.
I like the way you place your hands when you stand. The entire time I have had my board I kept my fists closed on my paddle thinking if I fell I might lose my paddle when I stand up, well last season I pinched my pinkie finger and it took about 6 months to get the feeling back. So open handed on the paddle should be noted. I saw yours and said Duuhhh to myself, thanks for the image.
I was a first timer today. I’m above average height at 6’2 so the employee gave me a very large board. It was very hard for me to catch balance even just to sit. One thing I can say is not to hang on to the sides, try to prop yourself without much holding. It seems hard but you have to trust the process. Also I find having a leg in back while one is balancing towards the center, balances the weight by distributing it across the board evenly. Nonetheless I still suck at it haha. I thought it would be easy but it’s definitely not. I’m hoping these tips work for next time
Try to stand on it with feet parallel and your toes pointing forward as shown in the video first, standing in surf stance makes it quite challenging to balance and look forward. This one has some good balance tips: th-cam.com/video/32wnMwnWMXs/w-d-xo.html

This HAS to be great for improving balance. I'm watching videos now and planning to start. I imagine it also is really good for general toning especially waist and upper body with the paddling. For me, the balancing is going to be a huge learning curve, I think. I'm supposing the wider the board the easier it is to balance, but maybe not maneuver? Is that the case? I will be learning and practicing in lakes in Arizona mostly, so fairly placid... and maybe not as pretty as Hawaii. :)
100%, it’s one of the best ways to train your balance and strengthen the core. Watch this video for more tips to get started: th-cam.com/video/-Q1YUtsqrzA/w-d-xo.html

I’m glad you liked it. It this is really just the very basic short summary introduction. If you want really detailed information keep watching more of our videos.🙏😎🤙🏼
Straight forward and simple video. Great work. A few people asking about PFD/Life vests. Doesn't the SUP board count as a Personal Flotation Device?!? If it doesn't... it should. Keep up the good work.
Agreed. In Hawaii the coast guard considers SUP's as surf craft and don't require us to wear pfd's. A leash should always be worn and makes the board your floatation device. In most places however, a pdf is required, check your local rules first.
Hi! I’m going paddle boarding sometime soon, but swimming is not a good strength of mine, do I need to know how to swim with paddle boarding - having a life jacket of course on!
I always recommend learning to swim first and not just relying on a life jacket and leash. Only go where you can swim back to shore if the leash fails and you lose your board. That said, if you paddle in enclosed area, like a small, calm, shallow lake you will probably be fine but avoid open water and offshore winds, be safe! 🤙🏼
Placing the board with the fin down is no problem even for extended periods, but don't step or walk on the board with the fin down (and don't let your kids run all over the board), the fins are not made to handle that kind of force, you want to avoid dropping the board on the fin or strong sideways pressure.
First time I used my SUP I broke the center fin. Sine it wasn’t fully in the water when I jumped on the board. So that’s very important point in the beginning of the video. Luckily the fin on my board is replaceable.
Went out for the 2nd time of my life yesterday. Enjoyed it a little too much was out in the sun for 6 hours on the water. Paddle boards are way better than kayaking. Also i learned a lot by repetitively jumping into the water on purpose and finding the best balance points I was even teaching others how to do it. Someone had their paddle backwards and told me a tutorial said to do it that way, I wondered what garbage they were watching cause everyone knows which way a paddle should face hahaha. Just watched thus video to see if I was correct on my own trial and error. And I was. Another tip is if you keep your center of mass ( the point just under your ribcage ) above the board you should have really good stability and balance without even trying. Once you shift ur center to the side you will fall in 9/10 times if you lean over
Good to hear, well done. It’s very common for people to get confused about which way to hold the paddle in the beginning and I keep hearing people say they saw it in a tutorial to hold it backwards but I have never seen a tutorial like that. I think it’s just confusion, that’s why I always try to explain the reason the paddle is angled forward. And yes, you want to keep your center of gravity right above the center of volume of the board. 👍😎🤙🏼
Thank you for teaching the basics.... but the places here in southern California where I go for paddle boarding but they don't have leashes in the paddle boards

Hi, 2nd time out on my board and I fudging loved it. Bit windy and cold, only stayed waist deep..... back out in the morning for me 👍🤙
Awesomeness 👍🏄🏽♂️😎
This was amazing. Quick and to the point. Make sure to make adjustments depending on your board size
Thank you, yes you have to adjust stroke technique on shorter boards to counteract yaw. 🤙🏼
A great video. You explained everything I want to know. Thanks a lot. I was looking for someone to give me a lesson. But now I think I can teach myself.
🙏👍 This is not meant to replace a lesson, it just shows you the basics, but glad you like it. Aloha 🤙🏼
Yes, open hand over the paddle seems to work best, then you grab the paddle as you are standing up. 👍👍😎🤙🏼
I finally tried my paddleboard! I got up, slighty bend, but my legs kept shaking 🤔 It was very fun though 😊
Nice, make sure to look forward, not down and watch some of our videos with balance tips for beginners 🤙🏼
Amazing video.
I watched it and followed his directions.
Didn't fall off ..wonderful video
I'm happy to hear you found it helpful, Aloha!
@@blueplanetsurf Thank you Very much, just retired from military. I have a great dog and Canal beside were i live in Dublin City. Im thinking of a life jacket 🤔. Your training Video is Class 🎯. And Thank you again!!!!!.
Thank you for this! I’m paddle boarding in a few days, and this video definitely helped
Fantastic! 👍😎🤙🏼
Hey thanks for a great little video! Good tips! Stand up paddle boarding shall give me an additional means to have fun when I move to Cyprus soon! All the best and thanks again! 😄
🙏Enjoy the water 🤙🏼
I’m going paddle boarding tomorrow so this should help cuz it’s my first time!!
Fantastic, enjoy! 🤙🏼
Very kind and nice movie, I enjoyed. Thanks for your tips! I just bought a paddle board!!
Glad you enjoyed it, Aloha 💪🏄🏽♂️🤙🏼
Thanks for the tips! I just went for the first time and wish I watched this beforehand!
Good to hear, enjoy your second time out and keep paddling! 👍
I went SUP yesterday and all these pointers were helpful I just forgot about the one of using the paddle as walking stick to regain balance
Yes, don’t forget to use the paddle for balance! 👍
Watched it yesterday night, tried SUP today and voala, I was Supping already! Thanks for the vid
Great to hear that! 😎🤙🏼
Came here to check if I had missed anything but seems I figured out the right way mostly on my own which I find curious. Though I need to stop looking at the water and adjust my paddle a little, thanks for the tips ^^
It’s pretty straightforward but even after 20 years I still find small ways to improve my technique 🤙🏼
Man, thankyou for the excellent beginner video! Just bought a paddle board and going to try her out next week!! Can't wait and thanks to you I'm really looking forward to it!
Great to hear, enjoy 🤙🏼
just went paddle boarding and it was so fun!
😎🤙🏼
Had my first launch, on canal in Dublin City, my Faithfully Companion was with me 🐕. It was Great fun. Thank you for Amazing Simple Instructions 🤩
Fantastic! 👍
Me and my sister wend sup paddling for the first time and we are already pretty good
Nice!🤙🏼
I'm not bad at paddle boarding, but I been doing it wrong lol this guy went into so much detail. This video is an icon on how to paddle board. Thanks bro
If you fall of the board and are injured or unconscious, wearing a life vest will keep you afloat until help arrives.
PFD will only help if it is worn correctly. Playing in the surf is a little different situation.
I'm a regular lap swimmer, but just got a board...exactly what I needed. Thanks
Enjoy! 🤙🏼
Many people have learned with your help. Thanks for these videos.
You are welcome. It always makes me happy to hear that the videos are helpful 🙏😎🤙🏼
Great video! I just found out I could extend my paddle oar! 😂😛 I was also standing wrongly on the SUP. I learned a lot! 😊👍🏻 Thanks!
Good to hear, practice makes perfect.
Just got my first biased today. Thanks for the tips and advice
No problem! 🙏😎🤙🏼
I’m going to practice these tips this weekend I’ll also search your vids I need to know how to get back in the board.
Great, we have several videos on getting back on the board, the key is to kick your feet behind you like you are swimming.
Quick question: when I arrive to the beach, is it ok to place the SUP on the sand with the fin on? For how long? Thanks! :)
Placing the board with the fin down is no problem even for extended periods, but don't step or walk on the board with the fin down (and don't let your kids run all over the board), the fins are not made to handle that kind of force, you want to avoid dropping the board on the fin or strong sideways pressure.
blueplanetsurf Excellent! Thank you for answering a beginner question with such kindness and quickness. 🙂
Wow, this is the best beginner SUP video I've ever seen! :)
Wow, thanks!
Very informative video Robert!
🤙🏼thanks Michael!
Thank you so much for this video, I feel much better about usung my board for the first time next week ❤
Fantastic, thank you for the comment 🤙🏼
First time I used my SUP I broke the center fin. Sine it wasn’t fully in the water when I jumped on the board. So that’s very important point in the beginning of the video. Luckily the fin on my board is replaceable.
Yes, you need to be careful, the fin is not made for standing on it. You are lucky only the fin broke and your fin box did not get damaged.
I had a similar issue. The stock fin snapped right off. The replacement I got from Amazon is much sturdier.
Damn dude. I didn’t know Tom Brady had a paddling channel!! Subscribed! 😂
Haha, ok then.
Thank you for teaching the basics.... but the places here in southern California where I go for paddle boarding but they don't have leashes in the paddle boards
Paddling without a leash is irresponsible, if you are renting you should ask for one if it’s not supplied. 🤙🏼
What if you fall, is it hard to get back on in the ocean?
Not if you do it right. Watch this video: th-cam.com/video/OiFOwsYscV8/w-d-xo.html
Going thru a break up and I’m finally gonna start doing something I want so I’m teaching myself at 21 🥰❤️
Excellent choice, enjoy!
nice n clean explained. thank you
thanks for the compliment, Aloha!
Just got my first isup today, thanks for the pointers!
👍👍💯👍
Thanks . I learned a lot.
🙏💪🏄🏽♂️🤙🏼
Great basic instruction!
🙏😁👍🤙🏼
tell me the measurements of this sup please
Aloha, the board I’m using in this video is the 9’10 x 33” Turbo model: www.blueplanetsurf.com/search/9%2710+Turbo/
See description for other gear used
@@blueplanetsurf thanks, aloha!!
How much do you weigh? I think this is the ideal all around board for your weight...Nice video as always. Thank you!
I weigh 195 lbs. I usually use a smaller board in the surf. The 9'10 Turbo is a comfortable board for me but if I was a beginner it would be challenging to learn on. For more information on choosing the best board for your needs, please watch the video here: www.blueplanetsurf.com/service/best-sup-standup-paddle-board/
ich habe von Linus Naake das Stand Up Paddling Handbuch geschenkt bekommen und ein neues Hobby dadurch gefunden. Jetzt zieh ich mir erstmal die ganzen Videos rein. Toll! :) :)
Sehr gut! 👍😎🤙🏼
Everytime I find it too hard to paddle I just go on my stomach and use my hands to paddle
That’s a good way to do it if you are struggling with balance as well.
blueplanetsurf yeah
These are great tips!! It's so much fun being out on the water!! Especially at sunset/ sunrise!!
Thank you. I agree, Sunrise and sunset are the most beautiful times to enjoy the water, plus you don’t need sunscreen 👍😎🤙🏼
i had my paddle backwards this whole time
That is a very common beginner mistake, I did that too. Now you know better, Aloha!
Omg ditto!! And I've been a bunch of times now! 😭
My friends and I just tried this. Much harder than it looks but so much fun
That is a very common reaction, I hope you keep paddling! 🤙🏼
Wish I had watched this before making a complete fool of myself!
Haha, it's not as easy as it looks, right?
I tried first time on a river, alone so I didn't make a fool of myself.
At first I was unsure so on knees and I got more confident in 15 min and then I could stand by myself.
But I have a big paddle 11' x 34" for my size and weight (1m60, 55kg)
@@EtoileDeNeige good, a big, wide board makes it easier to learn.
blueplanetsurf I have no feeling in my left foot and my ankle is seized, so I gave up pretty quick. Now I realise it wasn’t so much my injury, but my technique. Can’t wait to try again having seen this. Great vid. Thanks for posting
@@not2ropey good to hear this helped. Also watch this video about how to prevent your feet from going numb:
Superb instruction guys. Great clarity. Thanks from the UK!
Stoked you enjoyed it, now get out and practice💪🌏🌊🤙🏼
Im going paddle boarding today and realised I have no idea how to do it.
Well, then this is for you! Watch the SUP tips playlist for more.
@@blueplanetsurf This video really helped and im definately going paddle boarding again. I was suprisingly quite good at it and the only reason I fell in was because I tried to push someone else in😂
Thank you so much. It works with first try after watching your video! So useful!
That is a great compliment, thank you 🙏😎🤙🏼
Tom Brady
Haha, I'll take that as a compliment!
awesome explanation, I will try for sure
Just do it! 🤙🏼
I‘m learning English now, so I don't understand what you say but I think you are right ! thank you for your video.
Nice, thank you 🤙🏼
Pro tips. Thank you!
No worries, you are welcome!
Danke für die nützlichen Tipps.
Danke! 🤙🏼
Thank you for sharing your experience. I have learned from your tutor and have a very good improved in a short time. Thanks again.
Fantastic! 🤙🏼
a good start for a really fun activity in the water
🙏🏄🏽♂️👍🤙🏼
The best tutorial ever! Thanks!
🙏😎❤️🤙🏼
Great video thanks 👍 I keep falling off just as I stand up.... only been out twice though, off our local beach.
I'll try your suggestion of standing and looking ahead 😁
Yes, don’t look down and don’t overthink it, just let your legs do the balancing
@@blueplanetsurf thanks buddy, brain injury of 13 years, always over thinking 😁 out in an hour Supping 👌
Excellent tips! We can't wait to apply them. We made every single beginner's mistake that you mentioned, lol!
😂🙏🤙🏼
Nice and simple instructions for beginners like me. Thank you.
You are welcome, thank you for the comment!
