Exactly, like most Russian superweapons. There are exactly 3 operational Su-57s in the entire Russian air force (there were 4, but one crashed before delivery). It could be the greatest fighter ever designed, but so what? What can you do with 3 of them?

The SU 57 is the extremely capable and beautiful aircraft. I know the rear visibility sucks in the cockpit. Sukhoi does not have huge budgets like we do in the US. I think Sukhoi designers know that 3D thrust vectoring nozzles have a bigger RCS. and IR signature, than 2D thrust vectoring engines. Sukhoi puts more emphasis on the dogfight and super maneuverability. US Pilots should train against thrust vectoring aircraft just in case. Everyone loves their own team and aircraft. But you cannot underestimate the other side. You have to give credit to Sukhoi design Bureau. The SU-57 and SU-37 flown by good Pilots equals a good dog fight.
@@Galdenberry_Lamphuck While that's generally true, radar isn't foolproof and jets can still find themselves in a dogfight if they fail to spot another aircraft for whatever reasons (equipment failure, terrain obstructions, etc). The Su-57's stealth technology isn't as good as the F-22, but it still has at least semi-stealth capabilities which also factor into this.

@@Galdenberry_Lamphuck That’s what everyone was saying when the F-4 was rolled out but proved to be disastrous when missile engagements inevitably turned into dogfights and the F-4 had nothing to defend itself with. The fact that the F-22 *and* the F-35 both have internal guns just goes to show that dogfighting is not going to end anytime soon. Also don’t forget that the F-22 also has 2D thrust vectoring and dogfighting techniques are still taught at aviation schools such as Topgun and the the US Air Force Weapons School.
I was an Intel Analyst in the Navy and would talk to alot of decision makers about the difference in having a capability and being able to effectively use it. Training and experience are king. Not only with our pilots, but shipboard crew, infantry, etc.
Not just training and experience, but doctrine. I expect Russian doctrine and its application haven't changed a lot since the days of the USSR. In the US military, going back to at least WWII, when doctrine doesn't help address a current situation, it is tossed and the ingenuity of the commander becomes paramount. This sort of outside the box thinking is uncommon in non-western militaries. And based on their significant failures in Ukraine over the last 6 months, I'd say they're probably still as stupidly doctrine-bound as they ever were, and they have no cure for it. True story. Going into WWI, the US Army didn't even have TO&E for anything above regiment size, if I am not mistaken. They came up with all of that (for division sized units, and maybe even army-sized, I can't remember anymore) and coordination of effort while steaming to Europe in 1917. Like Fred Thompson's character said in "Hunt for Red October," the Russians don't take a dump without a plan.

They're fighting a 21st century war using 20th century doctrine... Ukraine adapted out of necessity, and is fighting how I'd imagine a 21st century "conventional" war would be fought. Obviously that's subjective but whatever. Another advantage is NCOs. The US delegates alot of tactical responsibility to NCOs. Russia doesn't have NCOs. I mean NCOs in the US Military also play a large role on a strategic level as well. Providing vital information to Flag Officers and often becoming SMEs on verious topics. For example I was a Nuclear Weapons SME, and Russian SME. Flag officers can't know everything about everything, they don't have the time. They manage and delegate that responsibility to junior officers and enlisted in the US Military
@@Whitehalo117 spot on. Our squad leaders have more autonomy than a russian platoon commander, and are expected to demonstrate initiative and leadership. Same for the Brits, Canucks, Aussies, and probably Germans. Our officers rely heavily on their NCOs. Outside of militaries that formed out of the Westphalian traditions, this just isnt how it works.
Russia have done longest intercept in history Air to Air at a range of 400KM with Su-27, the F15 or any US fighter wouldn't even have a chance to get near a Russian fighter to even have a chance to use it's missile or technology, Russia have best and longest Air to Air missiles with a variation of models at over 500KM distance since 2002 possible even 1000+KM by now at Hypersonic speed, US best Air to Air missile defense can be used at less than 140KM only, US fighters have 0 Chance against Russia long range hypersonic Air to Air missiles, type of plane or technology wouldn't even matter if the other fighter can destroy you from so far at Hypersonic speed. Plus Russia is making missiles now that are Hypersonic with Nuclear as fuel, no other country even has a missle that has a Uranium/Nuclear as rocket engine fuel, so the range is limitless by now. (Russia's Skyfall missile that can circle the earth for years with unlimited range!) + 9m730 burevestnik and others. The one that has better Air to Air missiles will win, forget about the fighter.
As an Air Force Brat this is do fun to listen too! When my dad retired he was presented an autographed picture of the Thunderbirds. To our family it is priceless, he retired in 1973 after over 20 years on a flight line.
Personally, i like both the f22 and the su-57 over the f35 and J-20. Both the su-57 and f22 look very sleek and manouvrable, almost like a leaf in the shape of a plane. I just wish to be able to see both planes from closeby some day in the future Edit: the stealth drone shown in the vid is called the S-70 Okhotnik. It's still fairly new from what ik and is still being tested and improved upon. (Pls feel free to correct me if i'm wrong tho)
Hey check the stats, the SU57 has proven nothing! The F15 is superior to anything Russia has and it’s fifty plus years old! 57 is not in the class of F35 or F22! Unreal stupidity!
Maybe too long ago for folks to know, but 360 degree thrust vectoring was installed during F-22 development. USAF decided it wasn't worth the complexity. When you get old enough you'll remember stuff people don't know. Not always a good thing.

It is not where you go to school, but what you go to learn that matters I would argue. Damon Studied English and did not graduate. Could he have obtained the knowledge on offer in a public library? Probably. Then again his father was a Stockbroker and his mother a professor so his attendance at a prestigious institution was a near forgone conclusion considering the resources available to him at birth. Learning for learnigs sake is a commendable pursuit indeed, but isn't the reason most attend University. They attend to gain knowledge they can evidence and exploit in the labour market for higher rates of renumeration. For the most part this cannot be done with that which is 'self taught'. Some form of verification is usually required, often taking the form of a qualification award. There are alao certain subjects that cannot be "got for $1.50 in late fees at the public library" with any level of ease nor utilised without the correct training and proof of competency. Medicine or architecture for example. In some respects education can be a 'colossal waste of money' but it can also drastically increase one's earing potential depending on the field of study and where it is undertaken. I joined the Army at 16 with little in the way of qualifications. I utilised distance learning whilst serving to obtain a degree and post graduate qualification, continued my studies upon leaving the Army and now earn far more than I could have hoped to had I not taken such a route. Dismissing education is just as arrogant as dismissing those without it.
Former USAF here too, early 2000's. I loved putting together plastic jet models as a kid. F-14, F-111, A-10, F-16, and even a MiG-29, which I thought was a really great looking jet. I'll give Sukhoi one thing... their design language is really outstanding. The Felon is a beautiful aircraft. Wish I'd had one as a model for a kid. I mean a Raptor would eat it for breakfast in actual air combat. But it'd be cool to see one at an airshow, lol.

The jet in the video is one of the prototypes, which is why the finish isn't that good and all those things are sticking out. The serial jets (5 delivered, 3 more being in final assembly) have a much smoother surface. There are comparison videos and pictures. Check it out.

My brother flew an A10 back when I was in high school. He told me that an f22 is basically the most technologically advanced piece of equipment the US has. They are truly awesome to see or hear if you are quick enough
First flight of the SR-71 was in 1964. If you think they just retired the SR-71 without a replacement, that seems non-sensical. Also, we know that the USA has stealth helicopters, 'cos they used them in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Also they have an unmanned mini space shuttle. F22 is not the most advanced piece of tech the USA has. I'd say the US SigInt capabilities are where it's really at.
I remember early on during the testing phase of the F-22 when the least experienced pilot was put in the F-22 and six of the most experienced pilots were put in F-15s. The F-22 shot them all down (simulated of course). We don't really know what would happen if two opposition Gen 5 jets went against each other, but I'd put my money on the F-22 given your analysis. It comes down to radar signature with first look, first kill and how well the weapons work against stealthy aircraft.

Many videos talk stats. It was nice to see how you were looking at the planes. One of my biggest takeaways was the pilot visibility, both outside and instruments. Despite the idea that both of these aircraft's pilots should never see the enemy until they fly over its wreckage, it is neat to see that pilot perspective on visibility outside from the cockpit, how it isn't just about dogfighting. Then the center vs side control. If you have a plane designed to kill at a distance using technology, having part of your instrument view blocked by controls seems like somebody not really looking at the big picture when they designed the plane and the person buying it not really thinking about smaller things that could have been changed to make it a more effective aircraft. For the argument of which is better at a certain job, I think the flight time argument wins. Even if an aircraft might be superior on paper, have a pilot with a lot more experience in the plane itself makes up for quite a bit. Conflicts in the past 100 years have shown that a few times already, that pilot skill and experience has a big impact on outcome and can negate other advantages.
From what we've seen in Ukraine everyone claims it's the size of the radar. Russian modern planes were seeing 3 times further than Ukrainian, that's why ukraine never had a chance.
Since you mentioned it, here's a story. A few years ago, I was Tdy at Nellis for Yellow Week and was on a B1 taxiing down the runway for an ops check. I was in the co-pilot seat of the B1 and we hear on the radio, "F22 Callsign", unrestricted climb up to 16k. Oh man, sitting there watching the F22 go smooth all the way up was absolutely the highlight of the trip.

F-22 2DCD nozzles are a major contribution to low rear quarter RCS and are mechanically simpler to trust vector. They provide more than just pitch. Differentially they have a strong roll moment. Yaw isn't quite as valuable, but differential power works pretty well.
Differantional..? The Nozzles on F-22 moves in tandem in pitch. And ONLY in tandem. Felon has the same TVC control as the Indian MKI recieved back in 2004. So Russia Aviation Industry has now decades of expirience operating TVC by now

I was on the West end of that runway (same side where the radome could be seen off on the left) as a second for one of our METNAV guys who were doing some work on the ILS and I was laying on the hood of the truck looking up and a 22 just happened to be landing. No noise. At least I didn't hear any and that thing looks very, very alien when it flies overhead less than 500 feet.

Hmmm one plane was actually produced in numbers, has spare parts, and has trained pilots. The other is seen at parades and air shows. One plane is combat ready and one plane is used as marketing material. F-22 vs SU-57? I think you know which is which.

The inspiration for the F-22 and other stealth aircraft was the episode of Star Trek, "Balance of Terror" due to the romulan cloaking device. A DARPA official saw the TV show and proposed a stealth aircraft program within DARPA ...
I always figured that big glass ball in front of the canopy would increase the radar cross section like the device they put on the F-22 so it’s easier to see on radar during peace time flight.
Su-57 have 10 prototype versions and only 4 serial versions which are all in service right now and in use as well. The front RCS is the same as F-22 or F-35 with no difference. Difference comes into play only with RCS from behind. That's because Russian way of aviation construction have a very different approach and understanding of concept of air combat. This is why they put big emphasis on it's maneuverability for professional Piloting factor to kick in while it will be in real combat. However, that's where the most intriguing part comes into play. Su-57 is the only jet in world with additional EW protection from IR and guided missiles from ground to air and air to air missiles and have additional countermeasure systems on it's tail to intercept incoming fire. Sort of like Vitebsk EW system but more advanced and specifically designed for this jet. So in turn, su-57 is stealth enough to attack first, but on it's way back, it is more vulnerable to radars which is why it have Vitebsk like system on board to compensate for it. Extra maneuverability is important in Russian doctrine. And there is a reason for it. We already have radars today which are able to see even jets like F-22 F-35 Su-57 and all of them. And Russia understands that this technology will evolve even more. So Russia in advance not compromising 5th gen fighter for a false idea of stealth concept to stay viable for a long time, because it's not gonna last long. They instead making Su-57 to withstand this evolution to never worried about creating next evolution fighter. So in future when actual gen 5th stealth concept will be dead in a water, Russia will still have a vast superior jet fighter with extreme maneuverability and EW defense grid on board. I would also emphasis on the fact that today Su-57 is the first and only 5th gen fighter that being used in real modern warfare. Others never been in combat. It's simple fact. Yet so important.
The F-22 is superiour. The reasoning is simple. Russia has a LOT less money to spend on their military. So they design and pay for what makes sense. And that is an airplane that can dominate everything it is most likely to run into. For them, that would be the Rafale, the Eurofighter, F-16's and a handfull of NATO F-35's. The SU-57 can hold its own against all of those, especially when deployed over Russia with its massive anti-air defenses and radar network. NATO has zero F-22's if you exclude America. If Russia and the USA go to all out war, Russia will just go the nuclear route. So that war will never happen, which is why there is no point to try and defeat the F-22.
@@armanisim7791 because of their land based radar capabilities. The F-35 cannot penetrate thousands of miles without being detected because it does not have all aspect stealth the way the F 22 does. The US also found out the hard way how old shitty radar sites can still pick up stealth aircraft with just getting lucky during the war in Bosnia when they lost a Nighthawk stealth bomber.
Yeah... cuz that is how radar works. A cross section the size of a bird doesn't get picked up. On the other end anything large enough to be classified as weather also gets blanked by the systems (explaining how radar didn't see the giant ships in "Independence Day"). When they say it has a cross section the size of a bird it is for reference not what can be seen on a radar screen. On the radar screen all targets that can be tracked are made to be the same size otherwise range increases radar return and would make a Cessna up-close as big or bigger than a 747 at 60 miles.
Good catch on the little bits on the felon adding to the RCS. I was watching an old documentary on the YF-23 and an engineer said rivets are like radar spotlights. Every tiny bump or protrusion seriously hurts stealth capabilities.
The F22 is in effect a 1980s designed craft. Some of us remember how crappy and slow the computers were back then. My take is that IF this is the best Russia can do to "improve" on such an old design they should just surrender now because there's a whole new generation coming soon from the Nevada desert
@@thomasblankinship98 of course, a lot of 1960s engineers with pencils, tsquares and slide rules could kick the ass of many engineers today. They had to THINK it out. After all, they stuck an aircraft on the moon and got it back.
And the Su-57 was designed in the 1990s in Russia, which makes it equivalent to a 1980s American design, given that Russia is at least a decade behind the West on everything.
When I was a kid the Russians came to the Oklahoma City air show. During the show there was a mock interception that was supposed to be with 2 F-15s, but one had a tire issue so they sent up and F-14. Before take-off they said unrestricted climb. Both fighters took off side by side, but about halfway down the runway the Tomcat pulls up, the wings go back and it's off. It was the most amazing thing I had ever seen.
Our F15 in Okinawa would fly two sorties a day 7 days a week Russian Pilots are lucky to fly two sorties a month unless they're a high ranking demo pilot. That alone sets up a monumental difference in skill level.
@jsharp that's the point. Russian pilots don't fly enough the get proficient. On paper they have one of the best jets in the would but they can't get air supremacy over the skies in Ukraine.

An interesting comparison. Many thanks for that. Starting at 6:45, a hazard symbol comes into view warning of ionizing radiation. There are several reasons why radioactive material could be present on a fighter aircraft. One possibility would be that a gun can fire kinetic energy cartridges with a heavy metal core made of a radioactive nuclide (compare A-10 Thunderbolt). This possibility is ruled out here because there is apparently no opening for a gun barrel in the surrounding surface. The more likely possibility would be radioactive components of the tactical airborne radar. Magnetrons and transmit/receive switches may contain radioactive material. However, since a magnetron does not have a significant frequency bandwidth, even the Russians probably would not put it on a top fighter. More likely is the presence of a traveling wave tube as a power component of the radar. However, this would also be a bit outdated and would not be expected in a contemporary top radar.
I am pretty sure in this case it is referring to generic microwave radiation. Those radars have a ton of power, and pilots sit right behind that all day. Microwave radiation does indeed cause cancer, despite what mainstream opinions claims. Lots of AWACS crew eventually wind up with rare cancers of bones and blood... All countries really need to do better to protect their pilots from this.

I believe SU-57 is pursuing different design specs. F-22 prioritized stealth to a point being overpriced even for USA. Su-57 is actually reducing number of parts compared to Su-35 while improving on all fields. Its stealth and avionics suite is good enough to push detection range of Su-57 to a level where Su-57 can't just be destroyed in surprise attack. The Su-57 should be good enough to safely retreat when in danger. Price reduction and availability improvements when compared to full stealth designs seem as decent engineering.. It certainly is big improvement on Flankers, and can fly faster than sound without demanding extensive repairs..
Its designed specifically with the "stealthy enough to not be detectable outside of around 30km, where it has both multiple WVR sensor suites and superior maneuverability to likely give it the advantage, especially against the F35. Its frontal RCS is without doubt *very* low, computer modeling puts it between the F35 and F22 in frontal aspect, the Patent listed a deign goal of an AVERAGE of 1m-0.1m RCS, note thats an AVERAGE not a Minimum, which the marketing departments of Lockheed like to use. Of course the actual RCS of all of them are classified and the RCS claims by people trying to sell their product over the competition aren't to be believed. I mean when has a salesman ever lied to sell a product... right.? Just like the same sales people will tell you the Flyaway cost of the F35 is ~78 million, when the USAF says the Replacement cost of crashed ones is as close to $176 million as makes no difference... and the foreign orders all come out to between 176-210 million per airframe... you can tell how effective the marketing campaign has been when people still insist the cost is under HALF of the actual number actually being paid. Russia doesn’t have the kind of airforce to take advantage of the F-22 and especially F-35. For the US these are assets that compliment a host of other specialty aircraft Depending on specific missions. The SU-57 is a beautiful airplane, but given russias lack of advanced munitions, it will be a more expensive Flanker
All of that compromise will end up meaning that in a fight ALL engagements will be true stealth rolling up and destroying all non stealth jets before they even know they are there. The cost savings won't seem so smart then. In the 30 years since the bf117 first gen stealth fighter was flown in the first gulf war that enemy fire has only shot down two stealth fighter craft. Two in 30 years of near constant conflict. Winning is everything.

You seen to miss the point, once you get within 50km, you are within visual range, this is also one element of the F35 which was stengthened, even if the kinematics are weak. @@TheAIishere Look it is not about individual planes but aviation as whole. Modern history is full of capable airplanes - which were killed by price of ownership. Eurofighters in UK or Austria, F35 in Italy, F22 in USA. All of those were a good planes, but are failures of economy. Russian certainly looked at costs of "stealth above all" designs of USA and chose not to do that. Even if Russia could build true F22 killer, it makes no sense to do it if they can't afford it. I think your analysis is spot on. As far as actual real world situations I always have thought many western pilots just have a hard time admitting truths or being able to accept that maybe some of those other Russian aircraft might just be quite capable, especially in the hands of a good pilot. I remember being at an Edward's AFB airshow around 90 or 91(yes the Thunderbirds were there😉, also an F-14D display smoked the 15 and 16 displays that day). Anyway, was talking to a slightly older test/research pilot there and asked him what he thought of the Su-27 Flanker. He referred to it as a lead sled. Now either he was ignorant, or thought I was, and would believe anything out of his mouth. I thanked him and walked away saying to myself, "that's bullshit."😏
I think I read in one of Chuck Yeager's book where there was discussions about which was better...the MIG-15 or Super Saber. Yeager told a pilot it would come down to pilot experience. Since they were test pilots at Edwards, they were able to fly both planes. Yeager and the other pilot flew two mock dogfights against each other, each pilot getting a chance to fly both planes. Yeager smoked the other pilot both times. Once in the MIG and once in the Super Saber. The other pilot had to admit that pilot experience did have to be taken into account.
The Su-57's that are shown in most pictures and videos are commonly the T-50 prototypes. There are about 10 of them. Serial production versions are being supplied to the Russian air force at a slow pace (About 2-3 jets a year). Even these versions lack the main stealth supercruise engine, the Saturn Izdeliye 30's.
and this was before all of the sanctions. The Russian military depends on western technology (CPUs, etc) to build the advanced machines. That doesn't mean they can't get lower grade tech from China, but what is the cost to the planes performance?

I personally believe that the Su-57 is the superior fighter due to better thrust vectoring and manoeuvrability. F22 may have better stealth but that doesn't mean the Su 57 doesn't have good stealth. The felon also has has much better radar having six onboard radars as opposed to the raptors singular one, The felon also carries missiles with longer range than the raptor and can cruise at a much higher altitude, this meaning in a head on engagement the SU-57 can probably lock and fire before the F22.

Its main targets are aerial, although initially it provides for the possibility of attacking ground targets, which was the weak point of the F22. The second point is that the presence of a powerful jamming system does not contradict low visibility in any way. And the fact that the F22 does not have this system is not an advantage, it is a disadvantage. As well as the lack of a developed optical detection system, the absence of multi-band radars - all this is what the Su-57 has and the F22 does not have. These are not different concepts - they are different levels of technological development and technical capabilities. The F22 is just outdated, it took off more than 30 years ago. The Su-57 is a further development of fighter aviation, naturally, it is much more technically advanced compared to the F22. Ohh wow ! Loved that breakdown, what was the most appealing factor is that although it was very technical but it was explained in such simplified manner that anyone can easily grasp it. As far as having the license of creative thinking for flying a fighter jet goes I think Top Gun ( 1986 ) portrayed exactly the same. Maverick is a pilot who doesn't shy away from executing out of the box manuevers to lock on the target. If I was a given a choice though between F - 22 & Su - 57 , F- 22 would be my kinda ride, not just for its beast quality but also it just looks so elegant & captivating in the air, its love at first sight type aircraft. 😊

As far as I’m aware they fixed the seems and the intakes. It’s won’t have frontal RCS close to F-22 but it should be lower than Superhornet block III and typhoons. Also has radio-photonic radar which has passed state testing in the last year and over 5 radars on board. In terms of what it is envisioned for, defending Russia in smaller scale(not WWIII) conflicts on Russian territory with integrated air defense and ground based radars supporting it, it will do it’s job well.
Great video! It's quite difficult to find research and facts about the SU-57 with it being so new. One observation is most of this su-57 footage is of a prototype and not a serialized aircraft. It's just a demonstrator, and not the final aircraft. See 0:40 into this video - th-cam.com/video/aNBmHmsDWB4/w-d-xo.html where they show one of the first serial production aircrafts. As you can see it is much smoother than the prototype which was rumored to even have plastic for parts of the skin. The YF-22, which was the prototype for the F-22 of course, was also not nearly as smooth as the finished product. Keep in mind that Radar technologies are advancing as fast as if not faster than stealth technologies. The su-57 is in fact equipped with 5 radar antennae, and operates both X-band and L-band radar. This does not give it the exact location of a stealth aircraft, and not enough for a lock, but it is enough to define the rough area where a stealth plane might be. Sources are difficult to get, especially with the SU-57 being so new. I watched a flight simulation where this jet was flying into enemy territory, it was picked up by radar. The guy flying said it has a radar cross section of a bird, but a bird doing Mach 2. I'm talking about the su 57 btw

@@THE-MAD-TECHIE It would have made little difference. The margins between the two aircraft are basically insignificant, with the exception of maneuverability. The F-22 wins that category, and I wouldn't trade that for a little extra stealth or speed, which it has in spades already.
One thing I noticed. With the pilots of the SU57, their helmets seem to be similar to the older kind used by other Russian pilots where it appears with the F22 and F35 a new type of helmet was needed in order to implement its new systems. Aside from the stealth design of the SU57, are most of the systems in the SU fighter mainly legacy type of avionics and targeting systems? Or do they have new technologies similar to the ones used in F22 and F35?
The sensors on the SU-57 are probably closer to the F-14 or early F-16s. Even the idea of designing a new aircraft for dog fighting looks like the buyer knows little about modern warfare. Like other Russian aircraft, there is no networking with their version of Link-16. Also the F-22 doesn't have sensors and relies on an AWAC to provide targeting data. The F-22 came before AESA radar on aircraft. Older radar could be detected allowing passive radar to track and then a HARM to destroy the F-22.
@@orlock20 literally the internet is full of pictures of SU-57 sensors. It's sensors suite is comparable to F35, even more ambitious in some aspects, and vastly superior to F22 which is at this point 30 years old. Yeah Russians usually lag in sophisticated electronics but not like 50 years.

22 doesn't have helmet mount target acquisition (reason being I think it's supposed to be in the role of directing others not getting into fight as much) 35 does as does 18, not sure about the rest.
I once got an incentive ride in an f-15E (91st FS in AK) and I asked the pilot Fumes about that Top Gun maneuver too. He said he never saw the movie so I was like "hit the brakes and they fly right by", and he was like "yea that could work" and I was like "how have you never seen Top Gun dude".
The SU-57 is a very unique craft, but has some glaring points of concern .. I feel this knocks the percieved quality of the platform, but it isn't directly comparable to the F-22. The SU-57 definitely has cockpit visibility and stealth issues.. it has a LESSER radar profile in it's shape, but is more focused on penetration & assault than radar evasion. Slow speeds in dogfighting may not be beneficial, although a good show.. I really think the SU-57 is more of a DEMONSTRATOR, and pride inducer..it may seem lacking in some ways but combines the feel of B-1B bomber & F-22.. projection of air superiority and assault in a more stealthy supermanuverable manner.. Both a joy to watch, as graceful as a ballerina.. and highlighting technologies..
The SU 57 seems just like one of the many Chinese cars that are designed to look somewhat like Rolls Royces or Mercedes', but underneath are just...well...Chinese cars. The Russians seem to have only just gotten beyond, "Make plane go fast! Fast plane win!". It's almost like their entire military is run by one guy, and if they can impress that one guy with a plane that has impressive numbers AS A PLANE, then they secure their future budget. Nevermind that it's just a sitting duck for existing 4th gen fighters with superior weapon systems.
These other aircraft promise a lot but the raptor is proven I’m from the uk and I’m not a pilot but I think it’s common knowledge the US has the best pilots and the best equipment. These other so called 5th generation fighters aren’t fully operational and that makes them only 30 years behind the Americans I also read that you guys are no longer building them that tells me one thing and one thing only… They say it’s because of cost I say it’s because you’ve got something better that we don’t yet know about😂
Thanks for discussing modern fighter planes. I've always loved fighter jets, from the F-4 Phantom to the F-14 Tomcat. Can you also discuss planes from other nations like the Eurofighter, Sukhoi Flankers or the Chinese jets (even the Swedish Saab jets, it must a matter of national pride to fly their jets)? Those rivets on the SU 57 really shocked me! The planes stealth I think is minimal, there are too many parts sticking out and rivets for it to be stealthy.
Funny that the whole time I was watching I was thinking if given the opportunity which one would I fly for fun and which would I choose to go to war with. My thoughts aligned perfectly with yours. Felon probably more maneuverable maybe bigger payload. Raptor more stealthy and meticulously maintained. End of the day, you would have a better chance coming home in the f-22. Those round nozzles on the SU-57 are radar beacons. That's why the F-22s are square but it prevents the nozzles from gimbling side to side though. But how much more agility does the side to side really add? It's not like you would want high lateral G loads
My buddy retired from flying the F22 and he said that he encountered a SU57 over Alaska more than once. He called that bird a "pig"! He said the 22 was a force not to even consider messing with. On one occasion he fly up behind a 57, got above him, and showed his belly with full arms. The 57 boogied back to Russia.

@Ruslan Masinjila there are actual videos of these encounters. Russia tries to probe everyone’s air space to see if they are telling the truth about the security abilities. We always are. I don’t know how many times they need to be reminded that just about everyone on this planet is more competent than them.
With reference to the RCS you briefly mention the engines and the first time I saw an image of the SU-57 all I could think of is what a huge target those things would make to a radar. The turkey feathers might suppress the heat signature, but once they start flexing, the also add to the radar signature. In many aircraft with sophisticated engine management systems, the turkey feather deployment is controlled by a computer that assesses performance needs and may cause them to deploy when it would be a great disadvantage. I agree that the SU-57 is a very sexy machine, but I think both the F-22 and the F-35 offer a lot more combat advantages, esp-especially when the interoperability capabilities are factored in.
All Russian fighters appear to be bigger than us ones. They think that is good. Well I don't believe bigger is better for so many reasons but it makes me upset recently rt news claimed in retaliation for us attack on their troops they shot down 5 us fighters. Maybe I misunderstood. But if that would have happened. I shudder to think real consequences of such an event.
Crazy to think that the F-22 was conceptualize in the 80's, designed in the late 80's/early 90's and went into service in the 2000's - and is still the most dominant air supremacy fighter ever! Apparently it's headed for a somewhat early retirement.... Sad.

It's not as crazy as it seems, many people think that the F 22 is an old fighter because of the years in which it was developed but they dont realize that the air industry (especially in fighters) doesnt move by dates but rather for generations, hence the F22 may seem like an old fighter in years but in reality it is a last generation fighter with more than 15 years of upgrades and correction of defects, really a beast and by far the best fighter in the world
F22 longevity is mostly because timing of its introduction. It was last plane developed before CCCP collapsed. Without adversary it was unchallenged for many years. Early retirement is also consequence of this. Without challenge it was underfunded. Produced in low numbers it was never important asset for USAF generals and so all development was stopped.
We should have had *750* F-22s in the U.S. Air Force arsenal but we only have less than a quarter of that number and no new units can be built because all the assembly lines have been shut down. Blame Obama and Robert Gates for that.

Russia has 9 SU-57 prototypes, with 3 operational. While America has 187 F-22's. They are retiring 3 dozen F-22's in 2023. The only reason they stopped producing the F-22 is because of the cost, and they don't feel as though they need an air to air fighter against...Russia anymore. So we have 62 F-22's, to every 1 of Russia's SU-57's. So yeah, Russia doesn't stand a chance against our fighters. Even if we don't build another fighter for a decade.
It seems to be once a decade the Russians (and the Soviet regime before them) announce to the world that their latest jet is the greatest ever and something that will make the US quake in fear but inevitably they turn out to be pretty average when compared to their US equivalent, a good example would be the Mig 29 Fulcrum, the Russians touted it as the "F15 killer", something that was gonna annihilate the F15s undefeated reputation but when they came up against Israeli F15s (the first time Mig 29s and F15s came head to head) the Bekaa valley was strewn with their wreckage, not only were they in no way a match for F15s but the IAFs upgraded version of the F16, the F16I Soufa (Storm) also kicked its ass, so IMO all Russian military propaganda should be taken with a large dose of salt.
Then it was not the fighters who won, but the interference created at all frequencies. Syria simply did not have such technologies. America met Russian pilots only in Vietnam and lost. American military propaganda should be taken with a grain of salt.

Seems like the Russians are going about the 5th Gen arms race in a very smart way. Instead of going head-to-head with the U.S's approach to 5th Gen aircraft with the F-22, the Russians have taken the principles of a 5th Gen aircraft and created an aircraft more in-line with their own combat philosophy, and not the U.S.'s. If the US had intended to forsake dogfighting for BVR strikes with the philosophy of "look first, shoot first and break away from engagement" with the design of the F-22 and F-35, seems like the Russians have included everything in the Su-57 to nullify this. The Su-57 is definitely stealthy, but not to the extremes of the F-22, because it doesn't seem designed with BVR at all costs in mind. With the L-band radars, it seems like the Su-57 is designed to have a rough idea of the general direction of opposing stealth fighters while still remaining at undetectable range. It then approaches the opposition fighters head-on, where the Su-57 is at its most stealthy aspect, while closing the distance. I think the idea is for the Su-57 to remain just stealthy enough that by the time the F-22 and F-35 discovers its presence, the Su-57's full sensor suite is already at play and it has made them vulnerable at long range to its radars, at which point the Su-57 can deploy its hypersonic missles, at medium range vulnerable to the IRST, and at close range, into a dogfight where the Su-57's aerodynamic characteristics is superior and stealth wouldn't matter anyway. What the Russians have done then, is to mimic nature: When a predator has a potent weapon, the prey does not come up with the exact same weapon as a solution, but comes up with a tactic and different weapon to counter the predator. In short... the Russian philosophy is to nullify whatever the US philosophy is. The US wants BVR? Force them into WVR. The Su-57 is the counter-stealth to the F-22's stealth. The Su-57 wasn't meant to directly compete with the F-22 in a dick measurement contest after spending obscene amounts of money. The Su-57 seems designed to cut off that said dick, and to do it at a lower cost. That's how I understand it anyway.
The F 22 will see the SU 57 far sooner and do a BVR. It’s all mote. Only that but the US will have their own long range missile very soon as of next year in early deployment,if not sooner.

Russia doesnt go engaging others around e world, most of its aircraft and i think the Su-57 too, was designed to operate only over Russian airspace to protect its borders, under protection of its blanket of SAM networks. F-22 seems to be designed to operate in foreign theatres, kind of in line w US policy so i guess absolute stealth is essential. Ya. We can say the Su-57 beats the F-22 in some fields. Maneuverability debatable. The Su-57 Femboi is a current generation aircraft serviced in 2020… The F-22 ultimate predator, is an early generation aircraft, stating in 2005. Its taken russia, 15 years, to catch up to current generation. And the US has already tested its next gen fighter, wile its been 3 years and russia hasnt serviced more than 5 su-57s.
Also it seems really hard to consider the Su-57 a true equal with the stealth ability of the aircraft. With the sensors, rivets, and engines I just can't imagine it being nearly as invisible in comparison.
F22 is so much more avanced than a SU 57, firstable the engines on the Su57 arent stealth, the radar is not an AESA like the F22, it stll depends on the PESA which is a generation older, the RCS is not even close to the 0.0001 of the Raptor, the radar absorving materials of the SU 57 are not even close to that of the Raptor. All in all they are generations apart.

Su57 engines are not ready. They are far late and should be on par with F22 (although 20 years later). Radar is AESA with 5 different arrays. Almost certainly much more advanced than one on F22. F22 radar size is much smaller, and its computers are weak and underpowered. RCS/coating is intentionally weaker on Su57 as cost and availability are of bigger concerns for Russia than USA. Anyway if F22 was clear winner over Su57 and J20 no new fighter would be fast tracked to production.
China is developing quantum entanglement technology. Once online, it will render USA Stealth technology moot. F22 will also become like F117A, obsolete. You cannot let up and rest on laurels. Yiu must keep developing something better than the corporate espionage artists like China. You do know China did steal F22 and F35 blueprints.
@@bariole Liar. Russia’s attempts to build comparable engines to the F-22 have been futile. The Su-57 has many significant issues, which is why the Indians left the partnership to develop it. Russia has made several attempts to have India rejoin the partnership, but India has not shown any interest. One of the Indians concerns was with its engines, and we’ve all grown accustomed to Russia’s boasting about its militaries capabilities, only to find out later that the claims are just hot air. Look at Russia’s Su-35 and Su-34 as examples. In Ukraine, a crashed Su-34 had a GPS locator taped onto it because its own internal navigation systems were poorly designed. And look at how in recent exercises in both China and Egypt where the Su-35’s antiquated PESA radar was easily jammed leaving the pilot blind. These poor outings led both Algeria and Egypt to cancel their reminding orders for them. The SU 57 is the extremely capable and beautiful aircraft. I know the rear visibility sucks in the cockpit. Sukhoi does not have huge budgets like we do in the US.
I think Sukhoi designers know that 3D thrust vectoring nozzles have a bigger RCS. and IR signature, than 2D thrust vectoring engines. Sukhoi puts more emphasis on the dogfight and super maneuverability. US Pilots should train against thrust vectoring aircraft just in case. Everyone loves their own team and aircraft. But you cannot underestimate the other side. You have to give credit to Sukhoi design Bureau. The SU-57 and SU-37 flown by good Pilots equals a good dog fight.

@@Galdenberry_Lamphuck While that's generally true, radar isn't foolproof and jets can still find themselves in a dogfight if they fail to spot another aircraft for whatever reasons (equipment failure, terrain obstructions, etc). The Su-57's stealth technology isn't as good as the F-22, but it still has at least semi-stealth capabilities which also factor into this.

@@Galdenberry_Lamphuck That’s what everyone was saying when the F-4 was rolled out but proved to be disastrous when missile engagements inevitably turned into dogfights and the F-4 had nothing to defend itself with. The fact that the F-22 *and* the F-35 both have internal guns just goes to show that dogfighting is not going to end anytime soon. Also don’t forget that the F-22 also has 2D thrust vectoring and dogfighting techniques are still taught at aviation schools such as Topgun and the the US Air Force Weapons School.
I was an Intel Analyst in the Navy and would talk to alot of decision makers about the difference in having a capability and being able to effectively use it. Training and experience are king. Not only with our pilots, but shipboard crew, infantry, etc.
Not just training and experience, but doctrine. I expect Russian doctrine and its application haven't changed a lot since the days of the USSR. In the US military, going back to at least WWII, when doctrine doesn't help address a current situation, it is tossed and the ingenuity of the commander becomes paramount. This sort of outside the box thinking is uncommon in non-western militaries.
And based on their significant failures in Ukraine over the last 6 months, I'd say they're probably still as stupidly doctrine-bound as they ever were, and they have no cure for it.
True story. Going into WWI, the US Army didn't even have TO&E for anything above regiment size, if I am not mistaken. They came up with all of that (for division sized units, and maybe even army-sized, I can't remember anymore) and coordination of effort while steaming to Europe in 1917.
Like Fred Thompson's character said in "Hunt for Red October," the Russians don't take a dump without a plan.

They're fighting a 21st century war using 20th century doctrine... Ukraine adapted out of necessity, and is fighting how I'd imagine a 21st century "conventional" war would be fought. Obviously that's subjective but whatever.
Another advantage is NCOs. The US delegates alot of tactical responsibility to NCOs. Russia doesn't have NCOs.
I mean NCOs in the US Military also play a large role on a strategic level as well. Providing vital information to Flag Officers and often becoming SMEs on verious topics. For example I was a Nuclear Weapons SME, and Russian SME.
Flag officers can't know everything about everything, they don't have the time. They manage and delegate that responsibility to junior officers and enlisted in the US Military

Same for the Brits, Canucks, Aussies, and probably Germans. Our officers rely heavily on their NCOs. Outside of militaries that formed out of the Westphalian traditions, this just isnt how it works.

Russia have done longest intercept in history Air to Air at a range of 400KM with Su-27, the F15 or any US fighter wouldn't even have a chance to get near a Russian fighter to even have a chance to use it's missile or technology, Russia have best and longest Air to Air missiles with a variation of models at over 500KM distance since 2002 possible even 1000+KM by now at Hypersonic speed, US best Air to Air missile defense can be used at less than 140KM only, US fighters have 0 Chance against Russia long range hypersonic Air to Air missiles, type of plane or technology wouldn't even matter if the other fighter can destroy you from so far at Hypersonic speed. Plus Russia is making missiles now that are Hypersonic with Nuclear as fuel, no other country even has a missle that has a Uranium/Nuclear as rocket engine fuel, so the range is limitless by now. (Russia's Skyfall missile that can circle the earth for years with unlimited range!) + 9m730 burevestnik and others. The one that has better Air to Air missiles will win, forget about the fighter.

The F-22 has 93000+ horsepower. The Spad X.III, flown by Eddie Rickenbacker in WW1, had 200 hp. Amazing how far we’ve come!
I'd also venture to guess the Spad was more stealth than the F22. Only thing to reflect radar was that engine.

Maybe too long ago for folks to know, but 360 degree thrust vectoring was installed during F-22 development. USAF decided it wasn't worth the complexity. When you get old enough you'll remember stuff people don't know. Not always a good thing.

Learning for learnigs sake is a commendable pursuit indeed, but isn't the reason most attend University. They attend to gain knowledge they can evidence and exploit in the labour market for higher rates of renumeration.
For the most part this cannot be done with that which is 'self taught'. Some form of verification is usually required, often taking the form of a qualification award.
There are alao certain subjects that cannot be "got for $1.50 in late fees at the public library" with any level of ease nor utilised without the correct training and proof of competency.

I joined the Army at 16 with little in the way of qualifications. I utilised distance learning whilst serving to obtain a degree and post graduate qualification, continued my studies upon leaving the Army and now earn far more than I could have hoped to had I not taken such a route.

I'm also an USAF vet from the 80s. No matter where an aircraft comes from, I can appreciate how it looks and flies.
Former USAF here too, early 2000's. I loved putting together plastic jet models as a kid. F-14, F-111, A-10, F-16, and even a MiG-29, which I thought was a really great looking jet. I'll give Sukhoi one thing... their design language is really outstanding. The Felon is a beautiful aircraft. Wish I'd had one as a model for a kid.

The jet in the video is one of the prototypes, which is why the finish isn't that good and all those things are sticking out. The serial jets (5 delivered, 3 more being in final assembly) have a much smoother surface. There are comparison videos and pictures. Check it out.

My brother flew an A10 back when I was in high school. He told me that an f22 is basically the most technologically advanced piece of equipment the US has. They are truly awesome to see or hear if you are quick enough
First flight of the SR-71 was in 1964. If you think they just retired the SR-71 without a replacement, that seems non-sensical. Also, we know that the USA has stealth helicopters, 'cos they used them in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Also they have an unmanned mini space shuttle. F22 is not the most advanced piece of tech the USA has. I'd say the US SigInt capabilities are where it's really at.

I remember early on during the testing phase of the F-22 when the least experienced pilot was put in the F-22 and six of the most experienced pilots were put in F-15s. The F-22 shot them all down (simulated of course). We don't really know what would happen if two opposition Gen 5 jets went against each other, but I'd put my money on the F-22 given your analysis. It comes down to radar signature with first look, first kill and how well the weapons work against stealthy aircraft.

Many videos talk stats. It was nice to see how you were looking at the planes.
One of my biggest takeaways was the pilot visibility, both outside and instruments. Despite the idea that both of these aircraft's pilots should never see the enemy until they fly over its wreckage, it is neat to see that pilot perspective on visibility outside from the cockpit, how it isn't just about dogfighting. Then the center vs side control. If you have a plane designed to kill at a distance using technology, having part of your instrument view blocked by controls seems like somebody not really looking at the big picture when they designed the plane and the person buying it not really thinking about smaller things that could have been changed to make it a more effective aircraft.
For the argument of which is better at a certain job, I think the flight time argument wins. Even if an aircraft might be superior on paper, have a pilot with a lot more experience in the plane itself makes up for quite a bit. Conflicts in the past 100 years have shown that a few times already, that pilot skill and experience has a big impact on outcome and can negate other advantages.
From what we've seen in Ukraine everyone claims it's the size of the radar. Russian modern planes were seeing 3 times further than Ukrainian, that's why ukraine never had a chance.
Since you mentioned it, here's a story. A few years ago, I was Tdy at Nellis for Yellow Week and was on a B1 taxiing down the runway for an ops check. I was in the co-pilot seat of the B1 and we hear on the radio, "F22 Callsign", unrestricted climb up to 16k. Oh man, sitting there watching the F22 go smooth all the way up was absolutely the highlight of the trip.
My man! Max used the exact quote that all us in military aviation use and care about. “The only thing that matters is looking cool” brings a tear to my eye.

Interesting thing I heard is that Sukoi designated it the 57 as a statement it’s as good as the F-22 and 35 put together.
F-22 2DCD nozzles are a major contribution to low rear quarter RCS and are mechanically simpler to trust vector. They provide more than just pitch. Differentially they have a strong roll moment. Yaw isn't quite as valuable, but differential power works pretty well.
Differantional..? The Nozzles on F-22 moves in tandem in pitch. And ONLY in tandem. Felon has the same TVC control as the Indian MKI recieved back in 2004. So Russia Aviation Industry has now decades of expirience operating TVC by now

You can say that again (about the space ship). I was on the West end of that runway (same side where the radome could be seen off on the left) as a second for one of our METNAV guys who were doing some work on the ILS and I was laying on the hood of the truck looking up and a 22 just happened to be landing. No noise. At least I didn't hear any and that thing looks very, very alien when it flies overhead less than 500 feet.

Hmmm one plane was actually produced in numbers, has spare parts, and has trained pilots. The other is seen at parades and air shows. One plane is combat ready and one plane is used as marketing material. F-22 vs SU-57? I think you know which is which.
They took those videos with limited to fuel and almost no combat armament........meaning this won't be the performance in combat from the SU57

The inspiration for the F-22 and other stealth aircraft was the episode of Star Trek, "Balance of Terror" due to the romulan cloaking device. A DARPA official saw the TV show and proposed a stealth aircraft program within DARPA ...
Both planes are absolutely gorgeous.
I always figured that big glass ball in front of the canopy would increase the radar cross section like the device they put on the F-22 so it’s easier to see on radar during peace time flight.
That thrust vector changed everything. Ingenious
Su-57 have 10 prototype versions and only 4 serial versions which are all in service right now and in use as well. The front RCS is the same as F-22 or F-35 with no difference. Difference comes into play only with RCS from behind. That's because Russian way of aviation construction have a very different approach and understanding of concept of air combat. This is why they put big emphasis on it's maneuverability for professional Piloting factor to kick in while it will be in real combat.
However, that's where the most intriguing part comes into play. Su-57 is the only jet in world with additional EW protection from IR and guided missiles from ground to air and air to air missiles and have additional countermeasure systems on it's tail to intercept incoming fire. Sort of like Vitebsk EW system but more advanced and specifically designed for this jet. So in turn, su-57 is stealth enough to attack first, but on it's way back, it is more vulnerable to radars which is why it have Vitebsk like system on board to compensate for it. Extra maneuverability is important in Russian doctrine. And there is a reason for it.
We already have radars today which are able to see even jets like F-22 F-35 Su-57 and all of them. And Russia understands that this technology will evolve even more. So Russia in advance not compromising 5th gen fighter for a false idea of stealth concept to stay viable for a long time, because it's not gonna last long. They instead making Su-57 to withstand this evolution to never worried about creating next evolution fighter. So in future when actual gen 5th stealth concept will be dead in a water, Russia will still have a vast superior jet fighter with extreme maneuverability and EW defense grid on board.
I would also emphasis on the fact that today Su-57 is the first and only 5th gen fighter that being used in real modern warfare. Others never been in combat. It's simple fact. Yet so important.
The F-22 is superiour.
The reasoning is simple.
Russia has a LOT less money to spend on their military.
So they design and pay for what makes sense.
And that is an airplane that can dominate everything it is most likely to run into.
For them, that would be the Rafale, the Eurofighter, F-16's and a handfull of NATO F-35's.
The SU-57 can hold its own against all of those, especially when deployed over Russia with its massive anti-air defenses and radar network.
NATO has zero F-22's if you exclude America.
If Russia and the USA go to all out war, Russia will just go the nuclear route.
So that war will never happen, which is why there is no point to try and defeat the F-22.
Russia would shoot nukes because they know they would lose......like a kid pulling a gun in a clean fist fight, it's kinda sad actually.

Yeah... cuz that is how radar works. A cross section the size of a bird doesn't get picked up. On the other end anything large enough to be classified as weather also gets blanked by the systems (explaining how radar didn't see the giant ships in "Independence Day"). When they say it has a cross section the size of a bird it is for reference not what can be seen on a radar screen. On the radar screen all targets that can be tracked are made to be the same size otherwise range increases radar return and would make a Cessna up-close as big or bigger than a 747 at 60 miles.

Good catch on the little bits on the felon adding to the RCS. I was watching an old documentary on the YF-23 and an engineer said rivets are like radar spotlights. Every tiny bump or protrusion seriously hurts stealth capabilities.

The F22 is in effect a 1980s designed craft. Some of us remember how crappy and slow the computers were back then. My take is that IF this is the best Russia can do to "improve" on such an old design they should just surrender now because there's a whole new generation coming soon from the Nevada desert
It is a 1980's designed aircraft. It started production in the early 1990's. I heard rumors about it when I worked at Lockheed in the mid/late 80's.

When I was a kid the Russians came to the Oklahoma City air show. During the show there was a mock interception that was supposed to be with 2 F-15s, but one had a tire issue so they sent up and F-14. Before take-off they said unrestricted climb. Both fighters took off side by side, but about halfway down the runway the Tomcat pulls up, the wings go back and it's off. It was the most amazing thing I had ever seen.
Our F15 in Okinawa would fly two sorties a day 7 days a week Russian Pilots are lucky to fly two sorties a month unless they're a high ranking demo pilot. That alone sets up a monumental difference in skill level.

An interesting comparison. Many thanks for that. Starting at 6:45, a hazard symbol comes into view warning of ionizing radiation. There are several reasons why radioactive material could be present on a fighter aircraft. One possibility would be that a gun can fire kinetic energy cartridges with a heavy metal core made of a radioactive nuclide (compare A-10 Thunderbolt). This possibility is ruled out here because there is apparently no opening for a gun barrel in the surrounding surface. The more likely possibility would be radioactive components of the tactical airborne radar. Magnetrons and transmit/receive switches may contain radioactive material. However, since a magnetron does not have a significant frequency bandwidth, even the Russians probably would not put it on a top fighter. More likely is the presence of a traveling wave tube as a power component of the radar. However, this would also be a bit outdated and would not be expected in a contemporary top radar.
I am pretty sure in this case it is referring to generic microwave radiation. Those radars have a ton of power, and pilots sit right behind that all day. Microwave radiation does indeed cause cancer, despite what mainstream opinions claims. Lots of AWACS crew eventually wind up with rare cancers of bones and blood... All countries really need to do better to protect their pilots from this.

I believe SU-57 is pursuing different design specs. F-22 prioritized stealth to a point being overpriced even for USA. Su-57 is actually reducing number of parts compared to Su-35 while improving on all fields. Its stealth and avionics suite is good enough to push detection range of Su-57 to a level where Su-57 can't just be destroyed in surprise attack. The Su-57 should be good enough to safely retreat when in danger. Price reduction and availability improvements when compared to full stealth designs seem as decent engineering.. It certainly is big improvement on Flankers, and can fly faster than sound without demanding extensive repairs..
Its designed specifically with the "stealthy enough to not be detectable outside of around 30km, where it has both multiple WVR sensor suites and superior maneuverability to likely give it the advantage, especially against the F35.
Its frontal RCS is without doubt *very* low, computer modeling puts it between the F35 and F22 in frontal aspect, the Patent listed a deign goal of an AVERAGE of 1m-0.1m RCS, note thats an AVERAGE not a Minimum, which the marketing departments of Lockheed like to use. Of course the actual RCS of all of them are classified and the RCS claims by people trying to sell their product over the competition aren't to be believed. I mean when has a salesman ever lied to sell a product... right.?
Just like the same sales people will tell you the Flyaway cost of the F35 is ~78 million, when the USAF says the Replacement cost of crashed ones is as close to $176 million as makes no difference... and the foreign orders all come out to between 176-210 million per airframe... you can tell how effective the marketing campaign has been when people still insist the cost is under HALF of the actual number actually being paid.

Russia doesn’t have the kind of airforce to take advantage of the F-22 and especially F-35. For the US these are assets that compliment a host of other specialty aircraft Depending on specific missions.

All of that compromise will end up meaning that in a fight ALL engagements will be true stealth rolling up and destroying all non stealth jets before they even know they are there. The cost savings won't seem so smart then. In the 30 years since the bf117 first gen stealth fighter was flown in the first gulf war that enemy fire has only shot down two stealth fighter craft. Two in 30 years of near constant conflict. Winning is everything.

You seen to miss the point, once you get within 50km, you are within visual range, this is also one element of the F35 which was stengthened, even if the kinematics are weak. @@TheAIishere Look it is not about individual planes but aviation as whole. Modern history is full of capable airplanes - which were killed by price of ownership. Eurofighters in UK or Austria, F35 in Italy, F22 in USA. All of those were a good planes, but are failures of economy. Russian certainly looked at costs of "stealth above all" designs of USA and chose not to do that. Even if Russia could build true F22 killer, it makes no sense to do it if they can't afford it. So Russians made plane which should be no more expensive than Flanker, capable enough to kill absolutely everything but F22, and robust enough to not to be shut down by F22 or other stealth planes.
I think your analysis is spot on. As far as actual real world situations I always have thought many western pilots just have a hard time admitting truths or being able to accept that maybe some of those other Russian aircraft might just be quite capable, especially in the hands of a good pilot. I remember being at an Edward's AFB airshow around 90 or 91(yes the Thunderbirds were there😉, also an F-14D display smoked the 15 and 16 displays that day). Anyway, was talking to a slightly older test/research pilot there and asked him what he thought of the Su-27 Flanker. He referred to it as a lead sled. Now either he was ignorant, or thought I was, and would believe anything out of his mouth. I thanked him and walked away saying to myself, "that's bullshit."😏
I think I read in one of Chuck Yeager's book where there was discussions about which was better...the MIG-15 or Super Saber. Yeager told a pilot it would come down to pilot experience. Since they were test pilots at Edwards, they were able to fly both planes. Yeager and the other pilot flew two mock dogfights against each other, each pilot getting a chance to fly both planes. Yeager smoked the other pilot both times. Once in the MIG and once in the Super Saber. The other pilot had to admit that pilot experience did have to be taken into account.

The Su-57's that are shown in most pictures and videos are commonly the T-50 prototypes. There are about 10 of them. Serial production versions are being supplied to the Russian air force at a slow pace (About 2-3 jets a year). Even these versions lack the main stealth supercruise engine, the Saturn Izdeliye 30's.

I bought su-57 scale model and now assembling it. Also reading everything I could find about. As I can assume the f-22 is supposed to stealthy come, precisely hit and run. The felon was designed as a heavy fighter-bomber, capable to carry air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles. F-22 is designed to be less visible on the radars, the felon is relying on his radio-jamming device.
Two different conceptions, two different purposes. Thus, it is complicated to say who will be the winner in dogfight.

Its main targets are aerial, although initially it provides for the possibility of attacking ground targets, which was the weak point of the F22.

Ohh wow ! Loved that breakdown, what was the most appealing factor is that although it was very technical but it was explained in such simplified manner that anyone can easily grasp it. As far as having the license of creative thinking for flying a fighter jet goes I think Top Gun ( 1986 ) portrayed exactly the same. Maverick is a pilot who doesn't shy away from executing out of the box manuevers to lock on the target. If I was a given a choice though between F - 22 & Su - 57 , F- 22 would be my kinda ride, not just for its beast quality but also it just looks so elegant & captivating in the air, its love at first sight type aircraft. 😊

As far as I’m aware they fixed the seems and the intakes. It’s won’t have frontal RCS close to F-22 but it should be lower than Superhornet block III and typhoons. Also has radio-photonic radar which has passed state testing in the last year and over 5 radars on board. In terms of what it is envisioned for, defending Russia in smaller scale(not WWIII) conflicts on Russian territory with integrated air defense and ground based radars supporting it, it will do it’s job well.
Great video! It's quite difficult to find research and facts about the SU-57 with it being so new. One observation is most of this su-57 footage is of a prototype and not a serialized aircraft. It's just a demonstrator, and not the final aircraft.
See 0:40 into this video - th-cam.com/video/aNBmHmsDWB4/w-d-xo.html where they show one of the first serial production aircrafts. As you can see it is much smoother than the prototype which was rumored to even have plastic for parts of the skin. The YF-22, which was the prototype for the F-22 of course, was also not nearly as smooth as the finished product.
Keep in mind that Radar technologies are advancing as fast as if not faster than stealth technologies. The su-57 is in fact equipped with 5 radar antennae, and operates both X-band and L-band radar. This does not give it the exact location of a stealth aircraft, and not enough for a lock, but it is enough to define the rough area where a stealth plane might be.

I watched a flight simulation where this jet was flying into enemy territory, it was picked up by radar. The guy flying said it has a radar cross section of a bird, but a bird doing Mach 2. I'm talking about the su 57 btw

@@THE-MAD-TECHIE It would have made little difference. The margins between the two aircraft are basically insignificant, with the exception of maneuverability. The F-22 wins that category, and I wouldn't trade that for a little extra stealth or speed, which it has in spades already.

With the pilots of the SU57, their helmets seem to be similar to the older kind used by other Russian pilots where it appears with the F22 and F35 a new type of helmet was needed in order to implement its new systems. Aside from the stealth design of the SU57, are most of the systems in the SU fighter mainly legacy type of avionics and targeting systems? Or do they have new technologies similar to the ones used in F22 and F35?
Im pretty sure one of those F35 helmets are custom fit to each individual pilot and are worth over 400k
The sensors on the SU-57 are probably closer to the F-14 or early F-16s. Even the idea of designing a new aircraft for dog fighting looks like the buyer knows little about modern warfare. Like other Russian aircraft, there is no networking with their version of Link-16.
Also the F-22 doesn't have sensors and relies on an AWAC to provide targeting data. The F-22 came before AESA radar on aircraft. Older radar could be detected allowing passive radar to track and then a HARM to destroy the F-22.
@@orlock20 literally the internet is full of pictures of SU-57 sensors. It's sensors suite is comparable to F35, even more ambitious in some aspects, and vastly superior to F22 which is at this point 30 years old. Yeah Russians usually lag in sophisticated electronics but not like 50 years.

22 doesn't have helmet mount target acquisition (reason being I think it's supposed to be in the role of directing others not getting into fight as much) 35 does as does 18, not sure about the rest.
I once got an incentive ride in an f-15E (91st FS in AK) and I asked the pilot Fumes about that Top Gun maneuver too. He said he never saw the movie so I was like "hit the brakes and they fly right by", and he was like "yea that could work" and I was like "how have you never seen Top Gun dude".

The content was great and informative, but was little biased against the SU-57, and that's how I felt. The video clip was more american centric.
The SU-57 is a very unique craft, but has some glaring points of concern .. I feel this knocks the percieved quality of the platform, but it isn't directly comparable to the F-22. The SU-57 definitely has cockpit visibility and stealth issues.. it has a LESSER radar profile in it's shape, but is more focused on penetration & assault than radar evasion. Slow speeds in dogfighting may not be beneficial, although a good show.. I really think the SU-57 is more of a DEMONSTRATOR, and pride inducer..it may seem lacking in some ways but combines the feel of B-1B bomber & F-22.. projection of air superiority and assault in a more stealthy supermanuverable manner..

The SU 57 seems just like one of the many Chinese cars that are designed to look somewhat like Rolls Royces or Mercedes', but underneath are just...well...Chinese cars. The Russians seem to have only just gotten beyond, "Make plane go fast! Fast plane win!".
It's almost like their entire military is run by one guy, and if they can impress that one guy with a plane that has impressive numbers AS A PLANE, then they secure their future budget. Nevermind that it's just a sitting duck for existing 4th gen fighters with superior weapon systems.

Those rivets on the SU 57 really shocked me! The planes stealth I think is minimal, there are too many parts sticking out and rivets for it to be stealthy.
Rivets are on all the test/prototype models. On the production ones the Felon is smooth.

Those round nozzles on the SU-57 are radar beacons. That's why the F-22s are square but it prevents the nozzles from gimbling side to side though. But how much more agility does the side to side really add? It's not like you would want high lateral G loads

My buddy retired from flying the F22 and he said that he encountered a SU57 over Alaska more than once. He called that bird a "pig"! He said the 22 was a force not to even consider messing with. On one occasion he fly up behind a 57, got above him, and showed his belly with full arms. The 57 boogied back to Russia.

With reference to the RCS you briefly mention the engines and the first time I saw an image of the SU-57 all I could think of is what a huge target those things would make to a radar. The turkey feathers might suppress the heat signature, but once they start flexing, the also add to the radar signature. In many aircraft with sophisticated engine management systems, the turkey feather deployment is controlled by a computer that assesses performance needs and may cause them to deploy when it would be a great disadvantage. I agree that the SU-57 is a very sexy machine, but I think both the F-22 and the F-35 offer a lot more combat advantages, esp-especially when the interoperability capabilities are factored in.

All Russian fighters appear to be bigger than us ones. They think that is good. Well I don't believe bigger is better for so many reasons but it makes me upset recently rt news claimed in retaliation for us attack on their troops they shot down 5 us fighters. Maybe I misunderstood. But if that would have happened. I shudder to think real consequences of such an event.
the stealth of the su-57 is provided by radar suppression systems. antennas are located around the entire perimeter of the aircraft.
Crazy to think that the F-22 was conceptualize in the 80's, designed in the late 80's/early 90's and went into service in the 2000's - and is still the most dominant air supremacy fighter ever! Apparently it's headed for a somewhat early retirement.... Sad.

Just imagine what it's replacement will be capable of. Had an engineer (worked at Lockheed) tell me, what you see flying today, we are already designing and building aircraft to be flying 40-60 years in the future.
It's not as crazy as it seems, many people think that the F 22 is an old fighter because of the years in which it was developed but they dont realize that the air industry (especially in fighters) doesnt move by dates but rather for generations, hence the F22 may seem like an old fighter in years but in reality it is a last generation fighter with more than 15 years of upgrades and correction of defects, really a beast and by far the best fighter in the world
F22 longevity is mostly because timing of its introduction. It was last plane developed before CCCP collapsed. Without adversary it was unchallenged for many years. Early retirement is also consequence of this. Without challenge it was underfunded. Produced in low numbers it was never important asset for USAF generals and so all development was stopped.
We should have had *750* F-22s in the U.S. Air Force arsenal but we only have less than a quarter of that number and no new units can be built because all the assembly lines have been shut down. Blame Obama and Robert Gates for that.

The fact that there are only 3 or 4 SU57's in service. Means there really is no comparison to be made.
The fact that the f22 is being retired might make comparison irrelevant as more su57 are produced.

India was going to buy several dozen of them, until they saw the F-35. Which sealed the fate of their export plans on the SU-57. So no, Russia will not be producing vast amounts of the SU-57 by any means.
The fact that you are using the F-22's "retirement" as your argument, is comical at best. Russia has 9 SU-57 prototypes, with 3 operational. While America has 187 F-22's. They are retiring 3 dozen F-22's in 2023. The only reason they stopped producing the F-22 is because of the cost, and they don't feel as though they need an air to air fighter against...Russia anymore.
So we have 62 F-22's, to every 1 of Russia's SU-57's. So yeah, Russia doesn't stand a chance against our fighters. Even if we don't build another fighter for a decade.

It seems to be once a decade the Russians (and the Soviet regime before them) announce to the world that their latest jet is the greatest ever and something that will make the US quake in fear but inevitably they turn out to be pretty average when compared to their US equivalent, a good example would be the Mig 29 Fulcrum, the Russians touted it as the "F15 killer", something that was gonna annihilate the F15s undefeated reputation but when they came up against Israeli F15s (the first time Mig 29s and F15s came head to head) the Bekaa valley was strewn with their wreckage, not only were they in no way a match for F15s but the IAFs upgraded version of the F16, the F16I Soufa (Storm) also kicked its ass, so IMO all Russian military propaganda should be taken with a large dose of salt.
Then it was not the fighters who won, but the interference created at all frequencies. Syria simply did not have such technologies. America met Russian pilots only in Vietnam and lost. American military propaganda should be taken with a grain of salt.
@@Seregagt5 Who said anything about US pilots v the Russians , it was the IAF (Israeli air force) v Syrian pilots , what it was was US technology v Russian technology which continues right up till today in the Middle east, the closest there's been to a direct Russia v the US air battle was actually during the war of attrition in July 1970 when Russia was so pissed off at Egypt losing Migs on a weekly basis that they engineered an ambush over the Nile valley luring IAF pilots to pursue them after an attack on a Sinai base, waiting for the Israelis were 24 Mig 21s and 23s all flown by Soviet pilots in Egyptian livery but the Soviets discovered to their cost that the Egyptians weren't the "badly trained pilots" that they accused them of being as the Israelis downed 5 Migs to no IAF losses, this is well documented and was probably the only time Egyptian pilots applauded an Israeli victory because of the humiliation Russian officers had piled onto them.

Seems like the Russians are going about the 5th Gen arms race in a very smart way. Instead of going head-to-head with the U.S's approach to 5th Gen aircraft with the F-22, the Russians have taken the principles of a 5th Gen aircraft and created an aircraft more in-line with their own combat philosophy, and not the U.S.'s. If the US had intended to forsake dogfighting for BVR strikes with the philosophy of "look first, shoot first and break away from engagement" with the design of the F-22 and F-35, seems like the Russians have included everything in the Su-57 to nullify this. The Su-57 is definitely stealthy, but not to the extremes of the F-22, because it doesn't seem designed with BVR at all costs in mind. With the L-band radars, it seems like the Su-57 is designed to have a rough idea of the general direction of opposing stealth fighters while still remaining at undetectable range. It then approaches the opposition fighters head-on, where the Su-57 is at its most stealthy aspect, while closing the distance. I think the idea is for the Su-57 to remain just stealthy enough that by the time the F-22 and F-35 discovers its presence, the Su-57's full sensor suite is already at play and it has made them vulnerable at long range to its radars, at which point the Su-57 can deploy its hypersonic missles, at medium range vulnerable to the IRST, and at close range, into a dogfight where the Su-57's aerodynamic characteristics is superior and stealth wouldn't matter anyway. What the Russians have done then, is to mimic nature: When a predator has a potent weapon, the prey does not come up with the exact same weapon as a solution, but comes up with a tactic and different weapon to counter the predator. In short... the Russian philosophy is to nullify whatever the US philosophy is. The US wants BVR? Force them into WVR. The Su-57 is the counter-stealth to the F-22's stealth. The Su-57 wasn't meant to directly compete with the F-22 in a dick measurement contest after spending obscene amounts of money. The Su-57 seems designed to cut off that said dick, and to do it at a lower cost. That's how I understand it anyway.
The F 22 will see the SU 57 far sooner and do a BVR. It’s all mote. Only that but the US will have their own long range missile very soon as of next year in early deployment,if not sooner.

Russia doesnt go engaging others around e world, most of its aircraft and i think the Su-57 too, was designed to operate only over Russian airspace to protect its borders, under protection of its blanket of SAM networks. Kind of makes sense further why it seems they designed the Su-57 e way they did. F-22 seems to be designed to operate in foreign theatres, kind of in line w US policy so i guess absolute stealth is essential. I think e Su-57 was designed w just enough stealth to push e battle into a WVR fight or at least, before e F-22 pilots have time to react or are deep in enemy lines. bt what do i know, im just a layman. i guess the tactics and combat philosophy of Russia informed the design of the Su-57. kinda makes sense, rather than developing a like-for-like F-22 equivalent which was designed w US combat policy in mind

The F-22 ultimate predator, is an early generation aircraft, stating in 2005.
Its taken russia, 15 years, to catch up to current generation. And the US has already tested its next gen fighter, wile its been 3 years and russia hasnt serviced more than 5 su-57s.
Also it seems really hard to consider the Su-57 a true equal with the stealth ability of the aircraft. With the sensors, rivets, and engines I just can't imagine it being nearly as invisible in comparison.

F22 is so much more avanced than a SU 57, firstable the engines on the Su57 arent stealth, the radar is not an AESA like the F22, it stll depends on the PESA which is a generation older, the RCS is not even close to the 0.0001 of the Raptor, the radar absorving materials of the SU 57 are not even close to that of the Raptor. All in all they are generations apart.
F22 is obsolete. USA is whipping out an even more awesome aircraft: 6th gen fighter. This baby will be rudderless. Imagine the German Horten Bros wet dream come to life, AS AN AMERICAN WAR PLANE!!! It is sleek as hell!
Su57 engines are not ready. They are far late and should be on par with F22 (although 20 years later). Radar is AESA with 5 different arrays. Almost certainly much more advanced than one on F22. F22 radar size is much smaller, and its computers are weak and underpowered. RCS/coating is intentionally weaker on Su57 as cost and availability are of bigger concerns for Russia than USA.
Anyway if F22 was clear winner over Su57 and J20 no new fighter would be fast tracked to production.

@@bariole Liar. Russia’s attempts to build comparable engines to the F-22 have been futile. The Su-57 has many significant issues, which is why the Indians left the partnership to develop it. Russia has made several attempts to have India rejoin the partnership, but India has not shown any interest. One of the Indians concerns was with its engines, and we’ve all grown accustomed to Russia’s boasting about its militaries capabilities, only to find out later that the claims are just hot air. Look at Russia’s Su-35 and Su-34 as examples. In Ukraine, a crashed Su-34 had a GPS locator taped onto it because its own internal navigation systems were poorly designed. And look at how in recent exercises in both China and Egypt where the Su-35’s antiquated PESA radar was easily jammed leaving the pilot blind. These poor outings led both Algeria and Egypt to cancel their reminding orders for them.
The fact that Russia can’t even gain air superiority over Ukraine, a nation with a very small and outdated Air Force further demonstrates that Russia ms fighters are not cracked up to what Russia claims them to be.
Buddy. . . In my opinion, both planes are timeless in terms of appearance and characteristics. I love Russian planes, but the F-22 and that matte paint uffffffff. . . Badass, but both, I simply can't say which one is better for me, one always has something that I would take away from one and then add to the other! Both aircraft are simply BRUTAL !!!
