Indeed, Diogenes had a remarkable talent for witty comebacks and sharp retorts. His quick thinking and clever responses often left people in awe. Thank you so much for your comments!
When you live in alignment with truth and virtue in totality, you will too be insulted by people on a daily basis who find your contradicting existence abhorrent. Then you too will develop a merciless tongue toward liars, thieves, and delusional believers of culture/tradition/society.
He started whistling and dancing to get the people's attention he played the madman to get our attention centuries later and he succeeded I only bothered to learn about him because he was referred to as the mad philosopher turns out he was a genius to a point of being admired by Alexander the Great.
Absolutely! I'm glad you enjoyed Diogenes' straightforward take on Plato. Diogenes was certainly not afraid to express his opinions in a bold and direct manner. Plato and he had very different perspectives, and Diogenes didn't hesitate to make humorous or provocative comments about his contemporaries. I'm delighted that you appreciated the presentation!
Thank you for your thoughtful comment! Diogenes' rejection of material possessions and his embrace of a simpler, more authentic way of life do serve as a powerful reminder in today's world where materialism often takes center stage. It's indeed an old wisdom that continues to resonate, urging us to reflect on our values and priorities.
Diogenes definitely had a reputation for his bold and unconventional behavior. He wasn't afraid to challenge societal norms and live life on his own terms. He was indeed a unique character in history! Thank you so much for your comments!
Diogenes was often seen as eccentric or crazy by many, but his unique actions and philosophy have had a lasting impact. Thank you for highlighting this perspective!
I'm thrilled that you found the exploration of Diogenes' life and philosophy enlightening! His unconventional way of living and his challenging philosophy indeed make him a unique and intriguing figure in history. Diogenes' approach to life continues to inspire many to question societal norms and seek authenticity.
Certainly! Diogenes was a trailblazer, both metaphorically and literally. His unconventional lifestyle and philosophical ideas were ahead of his time, challenging societal norms in ancient Greece. Today, his wisdom still resonates, urging us to question and seek authenticity in our lives.
Yes. It is widely known that we have millions of metaphysical pores all over our skin. So called "metapores". Diogenes through his vigorously ascetic lifestyle has transcended this concept and found a way to acively engage with those metapores. He quite literally opened them. Thus what you are saying makes perfectly good sense. He was metaporically ahead of his time.
Upon being challenged for masturbating in the marketplace, Diogenes replied, ‘If only it were so easy to soothe hunger by rubbing an empty belly'. Upon being asked, on another occasion, where he came from, he replied, ‘I am a citizen of the world' (cosmopolites), a radical claim at the time and the first recorded use of the term ‘cosmopolitan'
Thank you for sharing those insightful anecdotes about Diogenes! His responses truly reflect his unorthodox and thought-provoking approach to life. His remark about masturbation highlights his disdain for societal norms and his focus on fundamental human needs. Similarly, his assertion of being a "citizen of the world" speaks to his rejection of narrow identities and his embrace of a broader, more inclusive perspective. It's fascinating to see how his ideas were so groundbreaking and ahead of his time. If you have any more anecdotes or reflections on Diogenes' philosophy, feel free to share!
I admire Diogenes so much but i am too weak to be like him, he was indeed exaggerating in so meny things but that was a unique way of teaching others...
Remember, everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses, so be kind to yourself as you explore how to apply Diogenes' lessons in a way that resonates with you. Thank you so much for your comments!
Rearrange your concept of self, start to believe you are strong. Tell yourself you are strong. Every day. Watch what happens when you begin to believe it.
I also admire him and his teachings, but remember no man has ever reached greatness off of one ideal. They must incorporate and understand the ideals of others around them in order to lead.
Diogenes definitely had a knack for capturing attention and making a statement with his actions. His unconventional approach always leads to intriguing stories. Thank you for your comments!
If we can’t aspire to be even adequate Cynics, at least let us aspire to be good Stoics. Still let the example of Diogenes light the way to detach from conformity, luxury and pleasure for sake of the true good-even when his methods were radical and mostly unnecessary, but to be still admired for his courage, honesty, integrity and simplicity in his way of living; so to speak just being a master of himself in a sense of the word.
When asked if he liked Oreos, Diogenes said: "I only like the reverse Oreos, with vanilla cookies and chocolate frosting. All of you are living backwards lives".
"Why bother to live then, If living rightly doesn't bother you?", because there's no difference between being alive or being dead as you stated Diogenes.
I can imagine him being so ahead of his times he was driven mad by the dull and small mindded ppl around him.. liken it to a man now licing with ppl from 1000s of years ago

To live in unity with civilization is like clinging onto sufferings, where unity is like a mask to hide our vulnerability and identity. Yet without the mask of unity whole generations can collapse. But the truth is, with the mask we can develop a society at the expensive costs of a stunted character development that emphasise on the growth of our 5 senses - see, touch, smell, hear and emotions. The very modernisation that blinds our conception of a developed character to grapple on different challenges to who we actually are, a rat of small things or a lion of difficult things.

When Diogenes was sold as a slave, he said pointing at a man “sell me to that man, he needs a master” - which worked and Diogenes educated his family.
