BMW 650i Gran Coupe Review - Why the 6 Series may well be a flawless car - BEARDS n CARS

  • The BMW 6 Series of this F12/F13/F06 generation is quite possibly a perfect car in my book, and in this video I'll be breaking down that rather bold statement. After being wowed by the 640d, my biggest question going into this review was - can the more expected V8 petrol 650i match that level of deeply impressive engineering without the gimmick of a high performance diesel powerplant?...

Just bought a 640d gran coupe. A really unnecessary purchase. I just saw it at a car dealers, had a look around it, and the rest that leads to me now owning it. It's the best car I've ever owned, and it wasn't even on my radar until I had a closer look. I knew about them, I was just never that botherd to take more of an interest until now. I keep looking at it out of the window, and have to force myself not to keep taking it on pointless drives out🤣

I’ve had my 2015 650i for a few months, and I absolutely love it. It’s surprisingly fast. If there’s a downside to be had, I would caution anyone with bad knees because it does sit a little lower to the ground.

I have had my 650i for a few years now, and it had been something I looked for long and wide. The symmetries in design, what could be perceived as golden ratios, the luscious interior, and that meaty engine just ensured that the choice was spot on and the car immaculate as imagined. Indeed the car is impeccable at being a luxury grand tourer as well as a sporty sleeper beast, all while avoiding being desperately impractical.
To be completely honest, it is almost unbelievable how underrated these cars are, especially with that perfect balance of technology/gadgets, without overdoing it with touchscreens and intrusive safety features, lighting and scents.
It is slightly tight and low, and look out for heavy maintenance costs and red flags (they are premium BMWs at the end of the day). Otherwise, it is a timeless design destined to be a classic from the moment those cars rolled out of the factory.

I just bought my 11th BMW in my life - a 2014 BMW 650i Gran Coupe with Bang & Olufsen audio. This is the BEST car I have ever owned. This 650 is my corporate jet! The car is quiet and elegant, and at 5,200 pounds it is supremely solid and sure-footed on the highway. With 445 HP there is plenty of power on demand. Congratulations BMW - this is a masterpiece of auto engineering!

When I was 14, my dad bought a 2011 bmw 750i msport. I fell in love with that car the day we took it home. It completely redefined what a car what a car could be in my head. All my teen years I dreamed about one day having a 550i of that generation because in my mind it was the younger, prettier twin of that car. Recently it came time for me to buy a second car and I then spent a year feverishly looking for my perfectly specd 5 series. I never found it. No matter how much time I spent scouring the internet I never found the right one and I began to think I’d never make it happen. Till one day, I saw a post for 2013 650i. I had practically never even heard of it till then, it went completely under my radar the entire time it was in production. I figured out that It was the twin of the 5 series, just more luxurious and even less compromised, and that it was somehow the budget option between the two because nobody knows of them. Anyways, I now have my dream car, but in coupe form, and might be the best decision I’ve ever made. Saying I love it is an understatement. I am in love with it.

I have a 2015 LCI 650 Coupe and adore it. As you said if you are looking for one do go for the N63TU motor which received some significant upgrades to counter issues with cooling and valve stem guides failing prematurely. 2013 onwards are the years to look for with the V8. I looked for a fair while and when my car came up I snapped it up. I’ve had it now for 3.5 years and never had an issue. It gets religiously serviced and annual oil changes. These cars won’t tolerate crap fuel or poor neglected servicing. What they are afflicted with however is BMWs insistence on RFT …. Swap these for a set of Michelins Sport 4s and you will discover further the delights of this big beautiful GT bahnstormer….
I love my 6 series and I don’t ever intend being without it. It’s not a DD for me rather and weekend toy. As you say in your video it can be a sedate quiet cruiser or flick a button a shockingly quick rocket. If your subscribers are interested in one then do some homework and find the best one they can and something 2013 onwards with the N63TU V8.
    Cheers

Just a quick correction. The LCI for the F12/13 F06 was 2016 for US models. Europe give models their year designation based on date of production. The LCI came midway through their year dating method. But in US it's 2016.

I got a new to me 2015 650i F12. I was looking for a fun convertible that have the ability to make me giggle. But I wanted something that my wife would feel comfortable driving. Plus, I wanted enough trunk/boot space to take nice road trips. It checks all the boxes. It was either a post 2005 987 Boxter, early F-type convertible, or a 650i. It was easier to get all the things that make driving the car more comfortable in the 650i. She's been a dream.

Stumbled upon this video now and found it very good. I'm on my second Gran Coupe. My first was a 640d 2016 and it was an awesome car, lots of power, really comfortable, incredibly quiet and astounding build quality. But I'm now on an M6 Gran Coupe, and I must admit I enjoy it more than any car I've owned before. The looks, the ride, the power, the effortless way it wafts down the road all make for the most compelling drive I've ever had, and I daily mine. I don't have any complaints about either of my Gran Coupes, other than such a pity BMW don't make such a beautiful car anymore, the 8 series is just too ghastly and ostentatious, and doesn't have the stunning proportions of the 6. I suppose if I had to nit pick it would be that the corners are so long it can be difficult to judge turning angles, but that literally is just nit picking to be honest. I've had many BMWs over the last twenty years, including 9 M cars, and this is by far the absolutely best of the entire bunch.
    Great review!

I have this same exact car. Down to the exterior and interior colors! It is in the shop now due to leaks in the rear main and upper oil pan as well as for an air intake replacement, which are hefty repairs, but hopefully, she'll run well after all of these issues have been addressed.

Just a quick correction. ALL F06 Gran Coupes came with the 444HP N63TU. There is literally almost no difference from any F06 Gran Coupe. The LCI version just relocated some turn signals and updated the IDrive software. On the Msport models there was no changes to the front and rear fascia as found in say a 5 series LCI. The F Series 6 is a design masterpiece of nirvanic perfection that I fear BMW will never achieve again. The F06 650i is probably the most underated undervalued 4 door V8 coupe there is.

I spend $0 on any kind of maintnance other than oil changes. Best looking BMW ever, just a crazy fun car to drive and own. Extremely safe to drive and push to the limit, stable even going sideways. Word of caution, don't own the 650i out of warranty. I sold a 550i with the same engine as the 650i for the same price as the 540i. If you are following, the market takes into account that the 8 cylinder twin turbo doesn't do well with the long oil change intervals, is prone to oil leaks and will, out of warranty, throw a $5-12K engine repair bill. I had both - the first was $6K just out of warranty engine repair. The second was $12K but I got lucky and it was covered under a factory recall. The 640i has the infinitely more reliable 6 cylinder turbo. If you check the listings, a much harder car to find. All the benefits of the 650i with only slightly less acceleration and a significantly lower cost of ownership.

Back in 2015 i went for my dreamcar - e63 645Ci and before the buy decided to check the f13 650i. Dunno, probably my mindset was too fixed on 645, I rly didn't like the interior quality of 650 - cheaper squeeky plastic here and there, wood trim felt like paper, leather felt brittle, questionable reliability of N63, etc. So I've bought the e63. Now it's been nearly 10 years that I own that e63 and still can't even think of getting rid of it :D In the past 10 years I've also driven and helped maintaining several f13/f06 with N63 under the hood. Beatiful car, faster and more advanced but I still prefer the look and feel of my good old N62 barge xD As for the 8 series - I was stunned by the look of the concept and was kinda disappointed when the production model came out, it felt so simple from the outside compared to the concept and so faceless from the inside - literally 5/x5/7/8 series - same dash, same steering wheel, same gear selector, +/- same seats and no M860 version available with v12 from M760Li xD

6th year of ownership, 130k kilometers and except the boot gas struts, which are design very poorly, I got 0 issues. It's a great car it's fast, it's comfy, it's roomy, exceptional grand tourer.

The earlier n63 were troublesome in the US where it was their very poor fuel that caused injectors issues as well as valve stem seals leaking. This was rectified with the N63TU as in technical update from 2013 onwards. I’ve had my 2015 650 for nearly 4 years and not a problem.

This is an F06. All F06's have the profoundly better N63TU.

@@jf8315 i was thinking about getting a 2013 for 27,000 with 43,000 miles but been on the fence because of those engine problems i heard about so this helps.

I agree. Plus it's much better on fuel efficiency with enough power to overtake vehicles easily when you need to pass another vehicle.

    Beautiful cars but extremely unreliable.

The N57 diesel engine is very solid, but heard the V8 petrols can be a bit finicky.
It is by far the best looking BMW ever made in my opinion, they turn heads more than some cars 3 or 4x the price.
You won't go far wrong with a 640d in my experience.
Had 2 BMWs with the N57 lump, a 335d and 535d and had pretty much no issues all the way up to 150k on the clock on both.
BMW is one of the only brands where I'd recommend their diesel engines over their petrol counterparts every time

You don't want to drive a BMW you wouldn't want to come off as pretentious would you?

I had a Bentley bud, much too late for being concerned about that 😂

I would hope that car enthusiasts would buy a car that speaks to their enthusiasm and not based on something shallow like what do other people think about me.

Nothing but a money pit can't get parts and drinks oil all day. Looks good BUT repairs you will pay for car twice. Not a every day car.
