constant battle for me too. despite my war with the birds, they do help with bugs a lot!

    Bird's nest spruce

Lacewing larvae eat white fly along with ladybugs, pirate bugs and big-eyed bugs. Spring is bringing out the best in your trees outside. A good spray from the water hose will remove the aphids.

That is one nice looking trunk on the Boug. 30 years old and looking superb. Great care was taken to develop this Boug.

Excellent! Bugs have been horrendous this year!! I have got every bug you could imagine this season! Several that I've never seen before! Only snow in the woods and at the higher elevations here now. Leaves are coming out on the bushes and trees now!

dang ants have been farming aphids on my huge maple in the front yard. its not something i can even deal with the tree is so large. thankfully my bonsai benches are far away on the other side of the property. industrious little buggers for sure. thanks nigel! break a leg at your show this weekend!

Have you ever tried to put sticky paste around the trunk of your maple? I don't know the English expression for it but it is green, very sticky and ants have no chance to climb the tree up and farm aphids. Works well for my large apple and plum tree.

Great video, Nigel. I always learn so much from you. Admire your patience and attention to detail...also noticed your duck photobomb crossing the path! Thirty years on your Pixie, WOW!!! You're a great steward of all your plants. Also, got a kick out of drowning White Fly eggs. You're a hoot and a pleasure to watch. Thanks for all you do.

That’s an amazing looking Bougainvillea bonsai especially for its small size. 30 years of developing it great job. Wish you would have shown a picture of it in bloom though.

He has playlists on his video page for every tree he owns. Just sort them by newest first, he has 35 videos with the bougainvillea, and it flowers basically ALL summer 😊 Enjoy!

I am pulling out my trees from my pre bonsai bed. Any tips on how to keep them healthy after the first potting up?

Insect pests. I think the worst one in term of how much it saps the plant and how much it weakens the plant is scale. once you get a plant with these, it is nearly impossible to eradicate them entirely.

In the U.K. I have always thought that bougainvillea would not do well here due to cold winters, you have lower temps lower than we do so how do you manage to over winter them Nigel ?. Aphids are a problem we all have with different ways of removing them, I try to blast them off if possible with water, especially the woolly aphids on crab apples and plum bonsai trees, they have a sweet tooth, it do work ok for me.
