My mom is a huge Tetris fan from back in the day. When she saw this was coming to VR she got so excited and is all wondering how they could bring this to vr. I’m gonna travel today and go see her so she can try this

I got a PSVR2 two weeks ago and have been buying a lot of games for it. Your reviews stand out as the best I can find and I always look for your when I'm interested in a new game. I especially appreciate the calm endings.

As a PSVR player this is one of my favorite VR/Puzzle games I have gotten chills from playing this it is an experience that you must experience for yourself.
I'm surprised this review didn't touch on the new Zone mechanic at all. It's only in Journey mode, but it's crucial to racking up high scores and achieving S ranks.
Also, major tip to those wanting to get better at Tetris: fight the OCD. As in, don't obsess with making all the blocks organized and fitting proper. Train yourself to focus on getting the clears, even if that means making a gap or two. It takes practice and some risk, but the payoff is well worth it.
I try to keep these reviews as short, concise, and un-tutorial-like as possible. Who knows, maybe I should have included it. :D
I was scanning the comments to see if anyone else picked up on this. It's probably the biggest new thing Tetris Effect brings, watch your zone meter fill up, pull the trigger, time stops and try to get as many lines as possible for a mega bonus.
My favorite mode is the effects mode. I started the first track and just let it play till the last track. I felt like I was at some future EDM concert I can interact with. If you're musically inclined you add to the music by pressing x and o. After playing area x in rez infinite I've been waiting for something like this to come along. The actual gameplay is just a bonus for me. Btw excellent review meow.

When this game was announced at E3, I wasn't too thrilled about it. Tried the demo and I liked it, but I had my doubts on if it was worth the $40 price tag for the full game. Having hesitantly pre-ordered it, I can say the game is worth $40 and then some. Ridiculously addictive with the effects modes in particular. Great soundtrack/beats/visuals as well! And this is coming from a "non-Tetris" guy!
as a Tetris guy, something seems broken..the surround atmosphere is welcome, but the core tetris mechanics, something's..i need to play it, but coming from NES, Puyp, TGM3..Im used to a Tetris standard, im not sure,but i'll see.
I am not much of a tetris fan but I was addicted to playing this in VR it was astounding experience. You cant describe in words what its like you really have to put the headset on and be in the game. the soundtrack is amazing and I love that each section has a theme with its own special sound effects when you are turning and dropping the blocks. I am not really that good at tetris unless I sit down for a few hours with it. After that I dissapear off into another world. its very relaxing....and quit emotional too.
This looks good but will probably wait for a sale. I can't justify $40 for Tetris lol

Great review, Bryan. Was looking forward to this game for ages and glad it has delivered. Don't get the criticism of the price point, I was pleased that it wasn't the full price £60/$60 that Tetris was priced in the past! Also, just fyi, Lumines is the game Miziguchi made when he previously tried and failed to get the Tetris licence. So, while it may feel like this Tetris Effect borrows from Lumines, Lumines would not exist without Tetris = ) I love that both games exist as they are both great entries in one of my favourite genres.
Yea it's bloody good. Still gonna wait for a sale tho. They missed a trick with not havin multiplayer.. I mean you'd think devs would always prioritise having that in cos it's likely to help sales too.
Thanks Bryan! I'll wait for a sale. I enjoy the occasional Tetris game but with high priced games like Borderlands2 coming I can't justify the $40.
Off topic I notice on every VR channel there is always a maximum of 3 dislikes on almost every post. Usually disliked before they had enough time to see any of the content. Somewhere there is some little jackasses who just go around disliking all VR content.
Was never a big tetris fan but would love to get into this in VR it looks like a blast.
I'm not a big fan of tetris, but if I ever get the itch to get back to it, this is definitely the way to go!

Played Journey mode (on beginner) in one sitting in VR. The hot air balloon level is my favorite.

Its really easy to lose yourself playing this- stage by stage, the hours fly by. Really cool experience

I played the OG Gameboy version for years and to play this now ...Spectacular. Brian is spot on about multilayer tho. Love this channel.
I will wait for a sale since i personally dont LOVE tetris as much ( because i suck lol ) but i did had a blast playing the demo. Its BEAUTIFUL!!
Looking back at the amount of time I spent on the weekend demo probably should've justified the purchase for me. Gonna have to add this on the list to get after I pick up my switch from black Friday

I remember when tetrinet was released in '97 ... To this day nothing has properly maintained or improved on an online multiplayer version of Tetris. I would love to see this ...

Tetris Effect is such a divisive game. So many people say "Why is this even in VR?" while others say it's one of their favorites.
Other than the lack of multiplayer and the normal $40 price tag, I love it. :D

Great review as always......got my copy the other day......haven't popped it in yet.......I did try to play the demo again yesterday and it was "cock blocked".......how does that "weekend only" shit work anyway???....

The timed demo won me over. The price point poured cold water on my initial enthusiasm. I’ll drop £34.99 on Beat Saber for my PSVR, hopefully less, but I’m struggling to justify spending as much on Tetris Effects
Should add up good point this game actually has a potential to cure the depression. You can't deny the music and visual effects actually stimulate kind of excitement and happiness in our brain... Well at least this is how I feel when the dolphins swimming together with me or riding up in the hot Ballon in one of the amazing themes. Anyway I can't get my tetris soundtrack sampler works out properly, anyone knows why?

I don't like that the blocks come down faster the longer you play a level. Is there a way to keep the speed the same all the time?

@@EdenFilms No you can't change it because that is the game and this is the way Tetris has always been. If it just stayed at slow speed then the game would last forever.
+Billy Gunn That's what I'd like to have. Beating levels without stress or chilling out as long as I can. They added.many new modes, so they could have added that simple option, too.

Love Tetris.. and this looks like a great version. Just bummed about the price thou :( $55 Canadian.. thats a little steep for a puzzle game. Guess i should wait for a sale.
Nice review, just like Beat saber this is not on my list to buy (or should I say wasn’t!) now I’m quite interested in giving it a go, just to see what the fuss is about, I’ve always like Tetris but that price point is a big put off, still here I am ready to buy it once I’ve got through my back catalogue and have the funds to do so, who knows there may be hope for Beat saber yet! Rawr!
I'm really curious to hear what you think when you finally try it Madman. I was one of the "Tetris in VR? That's dumb." crowd when it was announced. But the demo completely won me over. I had no plans to buy it until I played the demo and afterward I couldn't stop myself. Probably didn't hurt that my wife liked it even more than I did.

Smart move Sony. Once upon a time, Tetris alone, sold millions of Gameboys. Fond memories of playing Tetris with my dad on the NES when I was a kid.

I have played the weekend demo in VR and this is a $20 game, at BEST. I don't know how they can charge $40 for a bunch of special effects and music.
Before I played the final version I would have agreed with you. But now that I've spent 4 days with Tetris Effect (as you can probably tell from my review) I definitely think it's worth every penny. :D
Absolutely worth $40. If I had paid $60 I still would be satisfied with my purchase. This game affected me in ways no game has in 40 years as a gamer. This is game of the year for me...and I own God of War and RDR2.
@@jeffthompson541 Not game but experience of the year, sure, without any doubt. It's trippy as hell, and some of the effects/audio is transcendental but there's nothing in this to make me want to play for hours. I got bored of the demo before it even timed out.
@@WithoutParole Apparently, the demo had a time limit but I couldn't tell you because I lost interest in it before said timer even ran out. :D So I doubt I'll be trying the full game.
@@sban8377 Hey, different folks. Nothing wrong with that. Personally, I've gotten more absorbed into this game than anything I've played this year. The kind of "Whoa.. I've been playing for how long??" experience I haven't had in a while. The price has definitely been worth it for me.
Indie folk millennial soundtracks are all over the place these days. I guess I'll just have to get accustomed to that.

I was waiting for this comment. I'm actually really good at Tetris (show us the proof Bryan!) but when I was capturing footage I was having a bad run and was going on days without sleep. Eventually you just have to take what you have an edit it together and wait for the silly comments to roll in. :D

I am not a Tetris fan, but tried the demo. It was the same game for me with immersive music and effects, so not a homerun new experience in my book. I am glad you liked it, but its a pass for me and I feel at $40 its way overpriced as the development could not have been nearly as intense as Astro Bot for the same price.

I bought it yesterday. I want my money back! At $53 dollars CAD this is a total ripoff. Maybe worth $10. Sub-par graphics and nothing new on the genre, there is nothing here that would explain such a high price. When I compare this to premium titles like Astro Bot Rescue Mission, one of the best game I've played which only costs $40, or Beat Saber also at $40, man do I feel like I was duped!
Tetris Effect is an extremely divisive game. I know a lot people that call it their favorite PSVR game yet, and just as many that say it's absolute garbage. I really enjoy it but agree with you on the price - $20 (in my mind) would have been a much better deal.
