Cpl. Kelly, I am 55 yrs. old and also a Marine Vet. I thank my 76 year old father all the time for how he always took me camping and fishing growing up! Literally the best thing he ever did for me and it didn’t cost him anything but time with me. Keep it up!

Oh, it does cost. Being a parent is tough, and being a Good Parent takes time and commitment. It's not in any way free, but the effort is well worthwhile. My oldest has a PhD and works for NASA, my youngest is a marine scientist and works for a zoological garden. Watching them grow and be successful is a shining spot in my life. More to the point, they are happy adults and not whiney piss-ant perpetual victims.

My daughter has been with my wife and I for a ton of years but now I have a grandson that I would like to introduce to camping but his dad refuses to allow us to take him with us. The guy (I can not call him a man) refuses to allow us to introduce my grandson to the outdoor life. Keep up the relationship you have with your son and keep on backpacking. Love you guys.

It's how he grew up, fear the unknown and no skills to manage the camping experience. Nothing wrong with introducing your grandson to experiences or your backyard. Pitching tents, tying knots, running lines. Outdoor cooking can start simple. Firebowl, burn down to embers put foil packets, maybe hotdogs, onions, potatoes. Take out with tongs, put on camp plates, eat on sit u pons you make out of woven newspapers covered with waterproof canvas pockets. Kids turn 18 fast!

Covid pushed me into the woods after a lifetime of nice houses but my roots never left and I'm dry and cozy unlike many that have lived this for years around here. Work nights and build my shelter by day. My birth dad never could have survived what I see as just another day. What a lucky kid to have the best teacher available.

Could you sometime address how to set up your shelter with an eye towards eliminating or, at least, minimizing the water that may run along the ground under it. The BSA used to talk about digging a trench around your shelter to divert rain water, but I don't think that is encouraged any longer because of the traces that it may leave behind when you leave. I understand that that goes out the window in a survival situation, but I want to be a good (and dry) steward of our natural areas when I'm just having fun. Once again, another video that is a cut above. I still can not believe your son managed to be successful with a bow drill in the pouring rain. There is no way I could do that. It was wet, humid and miserable and he managed to make fire and it appeared he has gotten better at it. He is exactly like his Dad! I understand practice makes perfection, but doing it in the pouring rain is beyond my skill level. Raining all evening and all night is real training. The menu was exceptional. Trying to catch catfish with your bait system should have gotten results. It did look promising. Having videos with your boy is very educational. Is there any way you can keep him with you to continue in great bushcraft videos? He is becoming very popular on the Corporal's Corner.

Hes lucky to have you in his life corporal. Guys like you and canterbury helped me get through some rough times with your videos so in your own small way you guys helped raise more than just your son. Keep up the good work brother.

Great stuff. At 84 my backpacking days are a sweet memory. But I remember one comment years back by the great Colin Fletcher, who said he was fanatical about saving weight, but had to admit he probably overdid it when he cut the tags off his tea bags.

@Karl Schubert I mean, what i loved was the implication that the kid surprised his father with it, i thought it was cute.

You can be very proud of your son, and yourself for teaching him how to do the things you need out in the wild! I learn a lot my self it just takes me a little longer than him. I’m in my 60’s and I have major heart issues but I still like to learn new things.

It was such a joy when my kiddos went from just carrying out their sleeping bag and some chow and graduated into full on pack mules. Lol. Don't get me wrong. I carry all my own gear. But now they're old enough to carry all their own too.

Your son is picking up pretty Quick , it took me some time to do a bow drill. Those sandwiches that you made were outstanding. After watching this video I had to go make me a sandwich just like you did, omg it was goooood !

Despite the rain, it looked like a great time.
The rain can be good to test and put on trial various skills too.
I have never used the technique to fish with tie offs ground to water. Will definitely have to try this.
Great experience, and thank you for sharing!

Excellent! I just got back from an overnighter with a few of my squad mates, we hit severe rain storms and flash flood warnings but managed to secure high ground and build a successful shelter and fire pit that lasted the night. Arcturus and some other pieces made it great, and I made your double bacon pizza using a large Y stick wrapped in foil like pizza peel. They were thrilled when I pulled out that gem while making MREs. ;) Stay safe, stay strong brother!

Just quality family time. Stay safe and keep on being who you are!!! Thank you again for sharing this time with us!!!
