I have a question, I have a camera like the first one you showed in your video, but with 4 bright LED's in it as well. when I hook it up like you said, wouldn't the LED's be on constantly? Because if I am right, the cables are attached to the radio, so if the radio is on, the LED's will be on as well, right? I think that's the reason people would want the camera attached to the reverse light wires in stead of the radio, so only when the reverse light is activated, the camera and LED's would light up.

Haha, thanks for the video, 7 yrs later its still useful, I am wiring style 1 and now understand why the reverse wire is separate from the red/black wires. Love the ending too! Cheers from Australia 😅

I was having hard time to figure out how to make it work with my Rear Camera Icon (on the screen) of my HU Sony XAV-AX5000. I installed Backup Camera, and everything was good. When I put my car in Reverse, Backup Camera works. Put back to Neutral. Hit/tap the Rear Camera Icon on the screen, black screen and shows “No Video Signal”. Watched your video and BOOM! Rear Camera Icon on the screen is now working. Hit/tap Rear Camera Icon on the screen while driving and I can finally see what’s behind me. Parked my car and Backup Camera is working as it should. Kudos to you Sir!

Thanks for the video! At 2:10 you connect the sensor wire from the camera to the 12v radio power. This works well unless you have a camera with bright LED lights that come on when the camera is powered. With this wiring method those lights are always on even when not in reverse. How do you recommend wiring in that case?

@@waltstringer7387 You can’t do that to higher end cars like my SL55 AMG. The back up lights are LED and won’t provide enough voltage to make the camera work correctly. Also you will get a bulb out warning in the dash because the computer will sense that extra load to the circuit causing dash warning. You have to tap to the fuse or SAM output wire to the back up light module.

My first time jumping into this head unit and camera install. I bought the style 1 with pioneer avh1550nex. I actually wanted the pioneer c8 camera which was $129cad and my shop suggested the $50 generic will suffice. I followed a corolla install by Quality Mobile video for my corolla and ran 18awg primary wire down the camera wire, along with a 6ft ground 18g and short wire from camera. Finished it off with tesa tape all the way down and installed the camera. Took extra time to place it because i started at the trunk. I will be installing the head unit on Monday with a buddy. Already tested the camera and hu with M12 battery it’s functional. Thanks for the informative video

I have a style #1 camera. If I wire it up the way you explain in the video, then, if I am not mistaken, my camera will be on the hole time my car's engine is on, correct? Well, that would make my camera LEDs to be on the whole time... I would like to prevent that and only have the camera LED lights to come on when my car is in reverse. For that reason, I have wired both red wires at the camera end to the back up bulb circuit and the front of the convenience wire, running along the video cable, I connected to the "reverse" wire coming out of the stereo. That way, the camera will be off, unless the car is in reverse, correct? Long story short, I had the same type of camera that was connected the way I described and it worked perfectly well for awhile, until one day it quit working. I thought that the camera was the problem and replaced it with a new one of the same kind. I plugged it in, but the video never displayed on the screen. Instead, I got the "No Video Signal" message on a black screen. I thought that the old wiring may have an open somewhere so I installed a new wiring, but the problem still persists. I am starting to think that the problem is in the stereo itself, even though the screen displays the rest of the devices just fine. Could you please point me in a direction where I could resolve that issue? Thank you!

So I have the "Type 1" type of setup. I tapped into the red wire on the back of the stereo with the red wire coming out of the yellow input on one side. I tested everything out and it worked fine (without the Reverse part since I was tapping that into the brake lights later). So I unhooked the camera and tapped into the purple/white wire from the stereo with a 16 gauge wire I bought from the hardware store. I then started fishing the 2 wires (input line and 16 gauge) through my 2009 Chevrolet Colorado cab and under the bed of the truck to the brake light. I mounted the camera and hooked everything back up. Through my research, I was informed that the bright green light behind the brake light was the one I needed to tap my 16 gauge line into. So everything was hooked up as it was before when it worked for me, minus the 16 gauge line that went from the purple/white wire, to the bright green wire behind the brake light. I turned the car on and I used my pioneer stereo to realize that nothing was popping up on the screen. It's just black. I messed with the camera settings, but it's mostly an on/off option. Any clue as to what I did wrong? It's been disheartening after 3 hours of extremely un-fun work to come up short. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

The configuration in the video is better because the camera will always have power, regardless if the reverse light is on or off. You could view the camera when you are in drive, if you want to, which is not possible with what @robbie davis setup can do.

I have a 2008 Honda Odyssey it has a factory Rear View Mirror Monitor with camera. The mirror is shot, need to replace. Most Mirror Monitors only have a ACC 12V, Ground and video signal. The issue is: in the Odyssey the camera is "always on" through some mechanism in the factory mirror. I do have a Reverse Trigger wire here but you advised not to tap into that. If I tap into ACC 12V that mirror will always keep the video up on the mirror. Any tips?

I have wired my style one camera exactly as you suggest but when I put the car in reverse, nothing happens. I plug my RCA into the into the front camera jack on the head unit and it works like a charm (the led's don't come on but I can live with that). I wired the backup sensor wire from the head unit to the backup light circuit as per your instructions. Apparently that is where the problem lies (I have 12 volts to the sense wire when in reverse). What am I missing?? (Blaupunkt Portland 310)

At the end where you say to run the purple wire to the reverse light wire in the back... where do you wire the other red wire for camera power in the back? To the reverse light? I thought you said it's not meant to power the camera.... if I wire it to constant 12v won't the camera always be on? There is a hole in the back of my camera, but no way to tighten wire in the hole... I have to wire camera positive red wire into reverse lights at back but not at head unit...

But I dont need the camera to run all the time, only when I go in reverse. How would you do that? If the camera red connects in the tail light it will be on all the time right? So if you connect the red to the reverse wire it will only come on when you shift into reverse right?

Seems my camera works fine when selected from the main menu, but NOT when car is placed in 'reverse' gear ( error msg no camera power). Presently I have the 'reverse trigger' wire connected to the green/orange wire in my lower kick panel (that another video of yours being able to connect to vs running wire all the way back to the tail lamp). I'm trying to install an AUTOVOX PS-004. U can't really find much about it, just the manual. It's a sensor & backup camera to see radio. It just has 1 red cable next to the video rca but seems to connect to the back where the box is stored that has the sensors connected. The one going to the back of radio doesn't have a red cable. That's what's confusing me. Lol there's no way I can reverse that cable cause the other end had a 3.5 jack that connects to the box where sensors are. So does that mean I don't really need a red cable, the box itself will power it up?

It gave good insight to the differences of getting power to the camera and how just tapping off a reverse light to power a camera may not allow you to use all the features of your head unit. The Boss backup camera I have is designed to get its power from the reverse light circuit, so it is only on when the car is in reverse. The camera draws very little current. My Boss head unit has a Reverse signal input that connects to the cars reverse signal (via a Metra console unit) so when the car is put in reverse the head unit switches to display the backup camera. There is quite a bit of variation in how these backup cameras interface with the head unit, but in my case the red wire at either end of the video cable is not needed. Cheers.

hey Boys. some audio pros say that if you connect the camera like you did with the first model, that the camera will overheat because it gets constant power. because of that the image will get bad over time and thats why they most people use the reverse light as a power source. is that true.

Well, I take it back. The Autovox Cam1 HD that I bought is made to specifically only power on with the reverse lights, because it has an ambient sensor and six bright LEDs that would be constantly blinding other drivers at night if it were always on. Oh well, at least I'll wire my next camera the way this video shows, if it has infrared lights / works the way the ones in your video do.

Okay I'm not sure how many other people have asked this question but if you take the red wire from the first camera you attach it to the power then you grounded wouldn't that be creating a short the red wire will be positive voltage then you grounded which is then negative voltage wouldn't that be creating a short especially since the Walter's again is coming from the input voltage that goes into the radio as well
