Right this is actually a well explained video. I’ve been on a few of these now and the comments are full of bots praising the videos when they’re not good. This is getting saved so I can use it later
About to install one on my Sport Trac -- and this video is a tremendous help. Thank you for your clarity in speech, video editing, and steps. Really makes me much more comfortable tackling this.
the video was very helpful, but it would be helpful to ( emphasize that the power wire to the backup light is the black/red stripe wire not the red wire as many people may think) You did mention it after watching the video a few times I picked up on it and switched the wires and it worked perfectly. Thanks!
I know it's been 10 months but I'm hoping you're still around and can tell me if those splicers you've used are still holding up. Your video is honestly one of the best and easiest but that'll depend if the blue things have held up.
well, I am a total beginner at auto electric and proved that trying to hook this one up on my own w/o youtube. Thanks dad ! I'll test that thing with some more wire now that it's hooked up and see how to put the right colors on the right terminals hopefully and hopefully did not ruin the cam or monitor already ! Super helpful so thanks !
One question: Instead of using add a circuit, can't we just add another quick splice onto the reverse light and use that as a power source for the display screen front? so two quick splice and use it power backup camera and display screen?
This video is well done and very helpful. My only issue is with the clamp on splicers. Those things should be outlawed. lol They ALWAYS allow moisture to enter, creating corrosion and resistance. And they almost always cut one or more strands of the parent wire I've seen those clips cause the parent wire to break in half because of the corrosion they cause. It's far better to cut the wire and either solder or use a wire twist nut filled with dielectric grease. Not hatin on this video. As I said, it's well done and very informative - even after 3 years. I just cringe when I see those clips being used.
I bought all the recommended parts and installed it successfully. Thanks for the video. However, the quick splices did not work the first time on either the ground or power connections. They made connection on the backup light side but not on the camera power harness side, so I ended up soldering a segment of thicker gauge wire onto the leads of the camera power harness wires. Then the quick splices made a good connection. I don't know if the splices are marginal or the gauge of the camera power wires got smaller or whatever, but I had 0% success using them on the power wires that come with the camera kit.
so many comments! the screen will have power all the time, would it not be better to put the screen via the reverse light fuse? How many amp fuse for the camera? it woiuldn't be much
I never knew about the added circuit fuse. I normally have directly to the battery with a switch so i can switch on and off when I want or piggy back it onto the cigarette lighter, I have mine in a van so it's on all the time so that it works as a rear view mirror and has a nice wide angle that gives me a better view when switching lanes on a motorway.
@@missculinary vans I've driven had the battery under the drivers seat so easily accessible, and easy to run the wire under the carpet to the dash. Whe the battery is under the hood it's a little bit difficult to run the wire through, that's when I find it easier to splice into the cigarette lighter. Or you can splice it into the wire that powers the stereo.
I just bought an ambulance and cannot see the rear as there are all these weird boxes stuck to the windshield! My first day, I backed into a BMW at Home Depot! This is SO EASY! Best video ever on this - I'm pretty sure I can do it myself. Thank you!
This is a great video, but it should be known, if you have a sedan with the fusebox mounted flush to the door, you wont be able to close the fuse panel to the add-a-circuit. So either direct wire under a circuit or better, find another place to mound it.
I just got one of these just to find out my stereo has a place for the cam built into it so I never did use the display screen. but it was easy to hook up
It is an okay camera. However, water gets into the camera. So, should have paid for more expensive one with a warranty option from Amazon. Now, I have to remove this one and buy another one after 6 months. However, I was able to get it to work so, the video was very helpful.

I noticed a red wire coming off the wire going from front to back, I believe it is the video cable. Question is what did you do with the red wire coming off both ends? Did you connect them to ground or to something else?
Awesome video. So you didn't use the cigarette adapter that came with it and tapped the ignition correct. I just got one myself that I am going to install today
Thanks great vid! Just a question...if the fuse tap is on the ignition it would power on the camera when the car is on....wouldn't it be better to put the fuse tap on the reverse fuse so it he screen powers on only when the car is put in reverse?
Good video. So you connected the camera to the reverse lights circuit and the screen to one of the available ignition circuits. Could you have just connected both to the reverse lights?
TPainWhatitDo its a late reply but, the camera is intended to be wired the way he did it so the camera only comes on when the vehicle is placed in reverse. Powering the screen at the same point would require longer leads and might cause a delay in the seeing the images on the screen.

Yes and no, it's going to vary by vehicle. Each wire is color coded depending on where it's going. If you aren't sure which is which in your vehicle it's best to look up a wiring diagram to make sure.
I know this video isn't that new, but I hope you get this question from me. First, best video on rear view camera installation on the internet. Great job!!! This particular system you installed, can the monitor be removed from the dash board when you are parked for the day for security reasons? Thanks for the video. I didn't quite understand the part about connecting the ground wire in the fuse box. Is the ground wire a part of the power cable to the display supplied in the kit?
I'm looking to put one of these on my Yamaha FJR1300 and wondered can you have a continuous feed of the rear view camera so that if I wanted to see what is behind me all I would need to do is look at the monitor? Sorry if it's a bit of a stupid question lol By the way a great video and well explained.
Confused about the ground on the piggyback fuse. How you are connecting the the power leads. Which ones goes where. Is the a optional ground wire needed.
camera has a positive and negative to power it, assuming positive from fuse goes to red wire on camera power, then camera negative wire goes to gnd. Thats what I think he is doing, but better to go via the reversing light fuse otherwise you have power to camera all the time car is on. Now i'm ansering his questions, and he hasn't even replied to my quetion, there might be better ways to connect the screen than he has done, but it should work fine. Check polarity of the fuse wire is positive before connecting it up. You will need use relevant fuse size if using reverse light fuse spot for ad a fuse, not sure what the camera would draw, dont think it would be much would have to check, i'm guessing 5amp would be plenty probably alot less, I will test my camera during install at some stage.
So far this is very helpful video, but i need to know where did you run the wire from the rear to the front? is it easy to run the wire on passenger side or driver side? I'm also installing the camera.
My truck has TPMS (tire pressure monitoring system). Shortly after I installed the backup cam I started having problems with it. I think I finally figured it out. It's RF interference from the unshielded video cable. I am going to replace it with a shielded subwoofer cable. Hopefully that will do the trick.
My ignition doesn’t send electricity to the radio so the only was I’ve been able to make it work is having a wire to the battery. Can I use that fuse with the outlet here? Your project is neat. I want one.
You should be able to get into your fusebox and find one of your fuses that is only "hot" when the car is keyed on. Tap whatever fuse that is and pull power from it.
Yes, you can. He would just have to wire the camera into something that is always on. I’ve done something like that on my trailer, I have a camera wired into one of the running lights.
My daughter keeps her work area pretty organized (sure didn't get that from me). If I can't find one of my tools I always know where her pink handled ones are! Thanks for watching and thanks for the sub!
I need to do this on my 2006 Nissan Pathfinder. My chain link fence seems to hate my vehicles. OK the fence & slippery mud in my driveway. The only concern I have is the camera covering the top part of the license plate, even though cops could just run the plate number on their computers to check vehicle registration status.
If it’s flickering it may either be a bad connection or interference. I’ve heard of some people having issues if the video line was directly next to other power lines in the car.
Great video, but what if I wanted the rear camera to be on anytime the truck is on? Would I just run the power to a day time running light instead of the reverse light?
I had just did it today and the monitor didn’t display . I have 1 question about the short red wire at the yellow plug monitor, where to connect this short red wire
It's been a while since I made the video, and I've sold the truck since, so I can't run out and check. I do remember that some of the wirings for the backup camera were mixed up though. You could try bench testing it first hooking it up to the battery to confirm what wire is positive, negative and signal.
Amazing tutorial! Defiantly subbed The only thing I didn’t understand was where the cables from the camera went? Did it follow through where the wires are for the headlights and if so wouldn’t there still be expose wire on the end? If you answer Thank you!
Good instructions. Now, my truck gives a poor visualization of the back, when viewed through the optical rear mirror. If I want to have LCD on, all the time, when car running, so that I have a running electronic rear view mirror/LCD, how should I connect that red wire? Do I need to run another IGN wire from fuse box to the back for car? Also is the LCD bright enough to be viewed during day time? Thanks,
I have a 2012 civic that's in great condition. Not even 100K miles. I desperately need a backup camera, they started putting backup cameras in their 2013 models. My poor bumper is in shambles because of it.
Yes you could, then it would come on whenever your driving lights were on. I thought about doing the same thing, or running switched power to it so I could turn it on and off when needed.
Hello.. Very good video.. I have a question.. I have a camera and a monitor.. You put your camera in your reverse light, so when you go to reserve position the camera turns on.. Then u put the monitor in fuse that is mean that the monitor(screen) its always on? Can we take power both of them from the reverse light? So that it turns on only in the reverse position? I will be waiting for your aply. Thank u.
The monitor will only come on when a signal from the camera is detected. So you can power the monitor through the fuse panel and it won't be on all the time. You can also run power from the tail light to the monitor through the red wire that runs with the video cable if you wish.
So far no problems with moisture, granted in in So Cal, but it's been washed dozens of time and submerged on the boat ramp twice. It's got infrared LED's for night time as well.
Great video, I am differently doing this. I have a ground next to my fuse box which I use for my dash cam...can I use the search ground nut to ground 2 wires...1 to my dash cam and 1 to the reverse. I want to use the same ground nut but worried about putting 2 wires to the same nut? Also how clear is the image quality??? Thanks

Can the monitor also be used as a GPS, or is it only for being a backup camera?
The monitor only has one input, there are others that have multiple inputs.

As long as your head unit has the correct inputs it will work.

Thank you for your video. Now I have the needed information to finish this job.
Great!
I wish you lived in my town man... Great job!
Really grt video, I followed every single step you instructed but my screen conitues to flicker all the time
If it’s flickering it may either be a bad connection or interference. I’ve heard of some people having issues if the video line was directly next to other power lines in the car.
DoItYourselfDad oh man I didn't think of that. Thank you so so much for the advice
DoItYourselfDad thanks for the response BTW much appreciated. Also I noticed you have a pickup truck have you ever undercoated your truck?
I haven’t, though I live in the dessert so I don’t have to worry much about salt
Great video, but what if I wanted the rear camera to be on anytime the truck is on? Would I just run the power to a day time running light instead of the reverse light?
Yes, exactly. Or any other 12v source that’s hot when the car is on.
@@DoItYourselfDad Thanks!
I had just did it today and the monitor didn’t display . I have 1 question about the short red wire at the yellow plug monitor, where to connect this short red wire
I'm confused. You called the wire positive and put the black one in. The wire from the camera. Wouldn't it be the red one?
It's been a while since I made the video, and I've sold the truck since, so I can't run out and check. I do remember that some of the wirings for the backup camera were mixed up though. You could try bench testing it first hooking it up to the battery to confirm what wire is positive, negative and signal.
Amazing tutorial! Defiantly subbed
The only thing I didn’t understand was where the cables from the camera went? Did it follow through where the wires are for the headlights and if so wouldn’t there still be expose wire on the end? If you answer Thank you!
Good instructions. Now, my truck gives a poor visualization of the back, when viewed through the optical rear mirror. If I want to have LCD on, all the time, when car running, so that I have a running electronic rear view mirror/LCD, how should I connect that red wire? Do I need to run another IGN wire from fuse box to the back for car? Also is the LCD bright enough to be viewed during day time? Thanks,
Does this work for Honda crv?
These would make great Security cameras, because they have a wide angle lens
But are potato quality so useless for that
Lot of security cams are potato as well
I have a 2012 civic that's in great condition. Not even 100K miles. I desperately need a backup camera, they started putting backup cameras in their 2013 models. My poor bumper is in shambles because of it.
Please dont drive
nice video , just make sure you buy a wide angle camera 165 to 180 degree ......and NOT 110 or 120.
Thank you, you’re my hero for the day!
Thanks!!
Could you hook the power up to your driving lights instead of your reverse lights. Would be easier to monitor a trailer if it's possible.
Yes you could, then it would come on whenever your driving lights were on. I thought about doing the same thing, or running switched power to it so I could turn it on and off when needed.
My ignition fuse is a 20 amp can I use a 20 amp for the camera or drop it down to 10 amp fuse?
20 amp will be fine.
Great job. Very clear and concise.
Thanks and thanks for watching!
Nice Video -But is it ok to cover up the month/year tags?
Nice video.
Could this be considered a fire hazard?
Why would you think that?
@@DoItYourselfDad thank u for your answer..
Yeah but what about when it rains or how good is the camera at night?
So far no problems with moisture, granted in in So Cal, but it's been washed dozens of time and submerged on the boat ramp twice. It's got infrared LED's for night time as well.
I have to ask, why did you add a new circuit to your fusebox if you already added a new one through your reverse light circuit?
The reverse circuit powers the camera only. The ignition circuit powers the monitor.
Thanks
Good video. Explained nicely.
Best video ever great job
Thank you!
Does the screen have the option to remove the bottom stand oration of it? Asking because I want to use my own mount. Thanks!
