      The obsession with super steels has to stop. It is great the tech is there and hopefully it will be more affordable some day, but the truth is, good traditional steels do the job just fine and you only get diminishing returns at this point. Our ancestors who would really depend on their knives to survive on daily basis would get by with much more irregular steel quality in their blades than we would deem acceptable today. At the end of the day, your 20 buck Mora will do any job just fine and you won't mind if it gets banged up.

    Just a little suggestion for those who are impatient - you can "dry" greenwood faster in the microwave. It's best done when you significant other isn't home, because if you go too far, its stinky.
    Use low heat and pause frequently (e.g. heat it up, then just let it sit a few minutes before continuing). You're basically boiling the water impregnated in the wood so it steams off. It's also not without risk - your piece may crack, especially if there are areas of varying thickness.
    I use this sometimes when turning wood on the lathe. In those cases I rough turn the shape, then microwave it before turning down to my final diameter. Since these bushcraft projects tend to be thicker, I think it should work ok if you're careful.

    I have several styles of Victorinox pocket knives. Fisherman, and the one you show here, are my two favorites, and I always keep one or the other in my pocket.
    3:57 I would have used saw to cut several times toward what I want thickness of cup to be. Then used blade like chisel, down tree rings. Much quicker with locking blade that way.

    I mean no disrespect when I ask this question at all, but how come you did not just carve out one side of the cup and leave one sealed? Was it to make the cup bigger because the knife blade was so short?

    We enjoyed that a lot during diner;) Interesting technique with the shrinking, but wouldn't the cup be prone to spiting when drying?

    • @velazquezarmouries
      @velazquezarmouries 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really it could form cracks but as long as you keep the bark I doubt it would

    • @TJStellmach
      @TJStellmach 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Normally, logs split because they dry unevenly. A cup like this exposes the wood to air more evenly than a cut log does, so it tends to shrink more uniformly.

      Yes, making the groove is also possible only with the tip of the blade..

  • @ScentitarFragrance
    @ScentitarFragrance 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No no no. Use fire to burn the middle or get a bigger knife. This is doing it the hard way and then adding a extra step with remaking the bottom of the cup

    I definitely feel that first tooling after a decent bench and a few large rounds should be a giant flywheel powered by ones foot like an old sewing machine. Last forever? Nope. But once you can turn a piece of wood, and have a power head, getting round things and symmetry for other things is easy.... Including a round 'tube' that could house small pegs to carry the flywheel shaft. (A primitive bearing). Then making wheels, pulleys, drilling holes etc becomes simpler with each tool made. Even making flat surfaces. Being able to turn out spokes/pegs of uniform dimensions for replaceable parts. Eventually, a large bellows that when combined with the right mix can make a pretty serious furnace. I'm not sure how to get metal or stone tools from there, but I'm sure it's possible

    What if you try to make a cup half of the size without drilling the second hole? The water-tightness will not be the issue then.

    Hi, thanks! Did You sharpened the blades during this? If not, would it have helped? Another question, is there any european wood that You should not use, depending on risk for poison or foul taste? I suggest that You next time in the cold use some glüewine, to make You warm. This day the 13th of december we celebrate St Lucia in sweden, before the change in calendar, this was the longest night during the year, and she brought light into hour homes and souls. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Lucy%27s_Day

      Hi Dan. Yes, I resharpened the blades several times. Yes, there are some types of wood that you shouldn't use for a cup. I only use wood that I know, like Hazel birch or alder wood.
