  • Let's talk Fuel Costs, Efficiency, Consumption and all that goes with life in our boat "Paradise" on America's Great Loop! Fuel is one of the 2 highest costs to doing "The Loop". Dockage is the 2nd high cost.     I have a Flowscan (Fuel Flow Meter) on my 29' Chris Craft. It's one of the most useful gauges you will ever have. If you have a NMEA 2000 Plotter, you can run them into it, but I think you use an iPad. Every boat has a "sweet spot" where it likes to run. The Flowscan will help you find yours.

    This video was supposed to come out at 10am as usual but, as usual, America's Great Loop surprised us with a sudden "Squall" of rain and 20-30 MPH winds that brought on a leak, right where the laptop was sitting. The laptop crashed, and although we had to edit most of the video again, we were able to use another laptop we have. Although life on America's Great Loop can be more work, it is never boring! ;) Thanks for your support and for watching and commenting! It helps ALOT!

    I believe most real world studies have shown minimal savings on 1 engine vs. 2 but I am sure that this can vary somewhat based upon the boat. If you had a folding prop (not practical on this type boat) you might see more fuel savings).
    RPM and currents will have the largest impact on consumption.
    Finally, I have read a lot of boat reviews with detailed fuel consumption tables. As long as speeds are not approaching hull speed (or up on plane) mpg is always better at lower RPM. I would be suspect of the person who reported 1300 was lower mpg than 1500 assuming those boats were running in full displacement speed ranges.

    You can add a in line fuel consumption transducer with a read out on the dash would probably pay for itself in a short duration so you can dial in the rpm/ fuel burn for best MPG............

    During my TH-cam viewing I've seen some boats use a fuel consumption computer. The device measures how much fuel goes to the engines & how much fuel returns to the day tank. The difference is your exact fuel burn. Gps info allows it to compute mileage.
    I don't know the prices of these units... but they're available.

    Just for the record, the two pump out ports, starboard/ port are designated, one for gray water, the other for sewer. You should have two holding tanks I believe. Basically one for septic water,
    the other for shower water. Get a Flo scan fuel monitor system, very affordable, will pay for itself over time. Will tell you your fuel burn at every rpm setting., running one engine in the intercostal, especially in narrow areas, and bridges is not a smart idea. Always want that second engine on for emergency. Especially while manufacturing. You passed right by my house in the Venice jetty’s and got me on camera. Have a safe journey. Bon voyage.

    Get a fuel stick, you can mark it with a permanent marker. If the tank is rectangular obviously the marks are equal. I have an airplane where the fuel tanks are odd shaped (to fit the wings). It is slow but you can still mark it by adding 5, 10 or 20 gallons at a time, put the stick in and add the mark at the new level.

    We cruise full time on our 42’ Chris craft, we run at 7 knots and we’re getting over 2 miles per gallon. We write down engine hours per fill up and that gives a good indication of fuel burn. And we measure distance traveled. Twin cats 3208s, 375 hp.

      @@robertcrawford4721 yes , both engines running, I’ve heard that with hydraulic trans like ours it’s not good to have one free spin without it running? I run around 1000 rpm and run it up to speed for a couple mins. Every 4-5 hours

      What transmissions you have. I got cat 502s. My manual says I can run single engine. And I do. I’m just gathering info for fuel performance. Costs over 1500 per motor to do fuel flow sensors.

      @@robertcrawford4721 I think your cat 502 is actually a twin disc? Mine has twin disc 507 I believe? I never read the manual that closely however I think I will.tnx

      @@fish1860 yes. My 502 is a twin disc. The ops manual is very specific. It says it can be run windmilling no more then 10 hours a day.

    Fitting a Fuel Flow Meter linked to you GPS is well worth having to find the best Nautical Miles per Gallon, it will also help find the sweat spot with a Single Engine as to when its better to run the Twins, a Flow Meter would pay for itself in fuel savings in no time!

    I created my own fuel economy curve using the manufacturer's fuel consumption (gal/hr at a specific RPM) and then ran the boat at those RPMs to see what speed it generated. That gave me a fuel economy (mpg). As you'd suspect, slower is better. We have twin diesels in a semidsplacement hull and I found no "sweet spot" that happens where efficiency peaks. It's just faster is worse.

    You will need fuel flow meters to accurately measure gallons per hour.

    Cheaper fuel in Nokomis and in Placida.
    Boca Grand is usually OK for prices.
    Marina Jack's usually is for suckers..... including the restaurant....lol

    Interesting information about traveling on one engine. Do you ever find 7 knots too slow? I feel like you would have to be underway 9 or 10 hours a day to make decent progress at that speed, which is too long a day of travel for me. I prefer to run in a smaller boat at 25 knots (when practicable) and be docked by 2:00 PM so I have the time and energy to explore a town and go for a long walk.

      We actually find that many other Loopers travel just slightly faster and some even slower. The slower speed is something we don't mind because it gives us time to plan. We really like the room on the boat, which is very spacious, but we want to save fuel costs as much as possible, so we go a little slower. We also like getting to our destination around 2 pm to explore, even if we don't travel as far that day. Thanks for the comments!

    That is not expensive for fuel. I spend more than that for two cars. It used to cost me in the 80’s 100.00 per tank for fuel traveling in Italy.

    So Fuel burn is very important along with hours on the engines, when it comes to how hard the engine or engines are working. If you think of just what your talking about, its get more complicated. So just like you said, slower with less miles actually helps how hard your engines are working which gives you better fuel economy. You may get somewhere faster but you will burn more fuel and the engines will work much harder. But thats not what the great loop is about😀

    Oh! Also, because of the "Squall" situation, we did not include the normal mileage stats to the next leg. So here it is: This leg, we motored from Marina Jacks in Sarasota, Florida, to The Crows Nest Marina, which was 16.5 Miles Southeast, at an average speed of 5.9 knots, arriving after 2 hours and 40 minutes. Wind were 6-8 knots and temperature was 60 degrees with rain forecasted that night. Hope that info helps ;)

    A wind milling prop creates more drag than a stationary property. You might try putting the dead engine in reverse as we do in our sailboat when the engine is off and we're sailing.

      That won't do anything, the zf gear has to have oil pressure to push the clutches together.

      @@NautiGrandpa That's too bad. There's no way to stop a windmilling prop? I've seen shaft locks on some boats put the engine in neutral and lock it down. I've never used one though.

    Note where you are when you top off the tanks at point A. Go to point B at an average speed of your choosing. Fill up your tanks noting how much fuel you added. Determine the distance between point A and point B. Divide that by the amount of fuel used. Now do you feel silly? And thanks for wasting my time. This is the only reason I watched your video.     This single engine idea is bizarre. The boat has 2 engines, use them. If you’re worried about the few dollars either way, ride a bike. You guys are wayyy overthinking all this and not enjoying the ride. Oh well you’re gong so slow you have nothing but time in your hands for this nonsense.

    I don't know what your prop size is. But, if you have power props like 11-12 pitch and whatever diameter that you can fit, it will increase your speed without increasing your rpm. They push more water because blades are larger but not curved for speed. You have a displacement hull. Speed props are for speed like 12-14 mph. With props that are for power, you are in effect, like a tug boat in pulling heavy weight without straining. ❤🧜‍♂️🔱👍🫠
