  • I took a little walk to get a bit to eat. I had a talk answering, how much is a Bangkok taxi. The answer is, it depends. But, it's still affordable.
    Here's a few links for my favorite credit cards. I try to check the links often, but let me know if there is a problem. If they change the offer on the card, I may need to update the link. Full disclosure, I get a few airline miles for referring a new customer. You should get the same public offer at no additional cost. Thank you very much.

    Be careful riding on those bikes without a helmet. Saw a guy bleeding to death in the middle of Sukhumvit 21 near Phetchaburi last Wednesday night. Medics were performing CPR on the man in full view of traffic and pedestrians. Was quite traumatizing and totally changed my view on the casual bike trip. That and Gordon Ramsay’s recent video warning against motorbikes without a helmet after he too was in a near fatal accident. Mentioning it here because in Bangkok it seems like a small deal. But things can get real bad real quick if you’re not careful. Eager Expat right in saying you want to assess the traffic situation first before picking a transport option.

    • @EagerExpat
      @EagerExpat  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Yes, there is a certain amount of risk you take on those moto-bikes. A helmet won't do much good if you get T-boned at 40mph. I've also seen at least a half dozen people getting hit by moto-bikes trying to walk across the road. It's all a risk in life.
      But yes, wearing a helmet could save your life. While filming a video, I caught a guy getting hit trying to walk across Soi 63. It's usually a bike flying the wrong way in bumper to bumper traffic. Many bikes will have a spare helmet. They might not be worried so much about your safety, but the police setup checkpoints often. I went through one today near Terminal 21.

    The way I see it the vendors and drivers need to clear about 100 baht per hour to take home 1000 baht at the end of the day. A one hour trip for 50 baht doesn't fit in with reality and the Spidey Sense kicks in. On the other hand, if you haven't experienced it once, give it a try. No one can force you to buy a suit.

    Have you taken the bus system (obviously not for jaunts up & down the sois)? I tried them last year when prepping for retirement there; some routes are not so bad as long as you're flexible on time due to traffic (similar to taking a cab). Just make note of which routes and bus colors are served by air-conditioned buses versus the ones that aren't, and plan accordingly.
    By the way, Shake Shake famously started as a food cart in a New York City park, so don't judge a book by its cover. Besides, if you've had tacos outside of HK, you're ready to hit up the carts on the sois....same same, only different, lol.

    • @EagerExpat
      @EagerExpat  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi. I've did the bus to Pattaya a bunch. Hua Hin years ago. But, around town, I just go up and down Sukhumvit. Even then, those buses are packed. Even at 1am. Maybe more so with the train closed.
      I'm a huge street food guy. But, in most parts of town I have a small place that's open late. I'd rather sit on the small plastic stool. It's maybe 10b more. I didn't know that Shake Shake was a NYC cart. I tried it a few months ago. It was really good. Still, being from Southern California, I'll always be an In N Out guy.

Some of your commentary got my attention recently when you mentioned the back pack and all the stuff you carry with you. Thanks...Jeff in Phoenix.

    • @EagerExpat
      @EagerExpat  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Nah, you'll be fine. I came from San Diego. No heat or humidity and I've adjusted. You need to change a few things. If you like to go run at 8am, I would change that until 7pm. Or get used to a steep learning curve. I was just talking about wearing (in my case) a North Face or Adidas bucket hat. I also usually carry small tube of sun block and a wash cloth. I used to try and use the neck thing that you wet. That stays wet for about 15 minutes in this heat. I'm out walking around in the heat for three or four hours at a time. Most people don't do that. It's no big deal. If you go to Pattaya or Jomtien, it's way cooler. The large buildings in Bangkok kill any breeze. But, I prefer Bangkok for today.

      Thanks for watching. I got a few condos on my own and the current one with an agent. She has since left the area. Just keep an mind, most agents will only show you there companies listings. They get one month's rent commission. No real incentive to split with another agent. So you might find a building you like and have to go to 5 agents to see 5 available units. No big deal, but that's how it often times works. Even walking into a condo office has slowed down. They usually can show you one or two places. The other 20 are listed with an agent. They don't want the office person cutting in on the deal.

      99% of the helmets are cheap and cost $20 or so. You can get those anywhere. Including lotus or Big C. It's still better than nothing. A good motorcycle helmet will be worth more than many of the bikes you ride on. That's actually a little more of a concern to me. A wheel locking up or chain busting off at 40nph. Still 99% of people including myself are wearing shorts too. So it's all a little risk.
