What are your thoughts about the MeganeX superlight 8k?
Nice but:
Too expensive not even taking in account the price of the controllers, base stations and wireless audio solution on top 🥶
We have to wait few years for the market to become reseanable, I don't imagine the look of the games that runs 4k*2 at 90hz.
We also have no info about motion clarity yet.
I'm still waiting for a headset with a similar weight of the beyond/meganex light with visual specs close to a quest 3 without camera, autonomous XR2 bullshit, batteries so we can cut on the price (and weight) and have a dp port for no compression. Kinda like a beyond 2, without the glare, motion blur, pannel limitation at max res/refresh rate and other issues...
Yes!! Love this!! Also, if Japan has this coming out I imagine Valve coming out with something similar soon. Well, at least I hope so. I am looking forward to Valve's new lineup considering Microsoft just screwed all of us.
It looks super good, but I find myself wondering if this is a replacement to the non 8k version, or if that under 1700 usd version they mentioned to you then, is still going to come. I also would like to ask if you can ask them if they ever plan to add AMD support like Pimax has begun doing. The website says it only works on /with Nvidia GPU's.
The same with inside out tracking, I can buy it...
No eye tracking and way overpriced.
It’s like a Bigscreen Beyond that you can share with friends without needing them to have the same shape head! And with higher resolution!
and also with much better lenses. BSB lenses suck from what I heard.
@@angrybeaver6667 its worst glare and sweet spot i ever try in last 8 years. Glare and sweet spot never bother me but Bigscreen did
@@ji3200 thanks for the input, yeah I can't go backwards in lense quality, you literally look straight through them the entire time, almost the most important thing
@@Kryojenix Also doesn't required you to buy a base station set and own the latest Iphone
As a Beyond daily driver, I can agree. The lenses sweet spot is so small that I had to get 2 new face gaskets as well as an ipd adjustment after purchasing mine. I noticed a lot of glare and chromatic aberration as well. You get mild ghosting in some high contrast scenes too. It's sad that I was more wow'd by the quest pro and 3 because of the difference the lenses make. I'm really looking forward to the next small form factor headset that has lenses that compete with the quest 3/pro as well as have microOLED panels.
This form factor is perfect
Thank you Sebastian for paying the Tokyo trip from your own pocket, just to bring us those great PCVR impressions.

future vr is coming strong ❤
Yes, but not for products with lighthouse tracking.
@@mitcherny6965 or lacking eye-tracking
Having a headset that you can flip up has always been something I've wanted in a VR headset design. Mainly because of developing VR games and find it frustrating to have to put the headset on and off when making small changes and re-running. This makes sense in other uses as well, rather than using pass through and not being able to talk to people without it being a bit weird.
thats one reason i loved my lenovo explorer.
huh..? this isnt new dood. you can flip up the Hp reverb g2 as well.. im sure there's others too
My computer and gfx card melted playing this video.
Honestly You do really good job for VR community. Kudos Sebastian.
Wow!
I think after years of iterations and false starts, sounds like they finally got it.
And damn I did not expect this.
It sounds like every box on my checklist is ticked. Insane.
my exact thoughts! They nailed the form factor. This makes the Apple Vision Pro look like a clunky dinosaur.
Except the lack of 1 point eye tracking. If there is eye tracking capability at 200Hz, this headset is GOLD.
@@Sacred-Lotus true, but for me personally I have to say that eye tracking isn't a must. Its a bonus. All the crucial necessaries are there with this at least! 200hz would be perfection too but 90hz micro-OLED will feel closer to 120hz lcd anyway, its so good.
8K you say. That's a lotta pixels to push. This look like a very spicy meatball. I like it.
Its not true 8k doe i hate when companies make sh*t up just to sell a product, but yes its a nice resolution
@@nokteur1429 No pc is going to push even TWO 4k res images at 90fps+.
@@FPChris Very, very true, but as long as the game engine is pegged to, say, a 0.02301% (or thereabouts, of course) workload then maybe 90fps is doable at 2 x 4k.
In any rate, yes, gfx complexity would be severely compromised - you'd be a long, long way off using your dGPU to the max.
all the more reason to spend 2000 USD on the 5090 XD
@@yukihiroshishido8093 imagine spemding 2000 for an 5090, then 2k for this Megane Vr and even base stations for those who dont have it..
5000 usd or more for vr is absurd and a waste of money tbh
Wow, it looks amazing. The only 'knit-pick' I would have is that it isn't inside-out tracking. I know the lighthouse system is a little more accurate but inside-out is pretty close these days and the lighthouse set-up just seems a little last-gen.
bravo six going dark.
Probably need a great graphiccard to support 8k, dynamic foeavated rendering might have helped
Just aesthetically this looks REALLY cool.
Shiftall has a very spotty track record actually releasing any of its products, especially outside Japan, so I'll believe it only when they start shipping. Yes, it's not so much their fault when the supply chain just wasn't working out despite promises, but nonetheless. Otherwise, yeah, perfect little device. If I don't get a Beyond before this ships, I'll consider dropping two grands on it.
This headset looks amazing, Bigscreen Beyond on steroids.
Does it have eye tracking? That would be quite useful for the resolution- almost necessary. Still, very exciting indeed!
This thing is so depressing. We are almost in 2025, and this people want to ship a headset without eye-tracking. It is simple outrageous.
No news on eye tracking, so probably not. For dual 4K screen stereoscopic rendering, forveated rendering is a *MUST Have* , otherwise this HMD can render an 4090 down to its knees, barely go past 65~70 FPS (except for very simplistic scenes, you could easily go past thousands FPS with a box and a plane 😁)
yea absolutely need eye tracking
Fantastic! Please ask for dark scenes in the demo!!
Looks like those lenses are also coated with grease 1:17 🙃
Hello, Sebastian :) I remember that video perfectly well , and the same person who flashes in this video presented a prototype to you and a companion . And in my opinion, this helmet is from Panasonic. This instance looks just fine, finally something really convenient and apparently
I want to pre-order it, but can we trust Shiftall to actually ship these in the spring? I don't want to be out $1900.
Yes, this is backed by Panasonic. They will deliver.
Just wait more reviews
@@mixedrealityTV Panasonic sold them off to CREEK & RIVER in january of this year
Susge. Also Dan gay.
“Please note that orders cannot be cancelled, returned or refunded once confirmed.”
Come back to us when they have a retail model available, pricing and software to use with it.
$1,899. They have no obligation to come back. He did a review. Brought me here and I found the website with the specs. Maybe do some research on your on instead of waiting for people to do it for you.
THIS^ and the "BigScreen Beyond" are the perfect size VR headset to have as industry standard.
@@powerhouse884 PCVR of course pushing the boundaries for VR.
Imagine if Meta stuck with PCVR instead of moving thecindustry towards standalone.
We would have got here faster.
@@zackmac5917 Sadly VALVE and HTC still make horrible bulky headsets.
Pancake lenses and an OLED screen? Isn’t that the perfect combination? Being able to push in and expand out the viewer makes it look easy to adjust. This may be another incredible VR option
Actually microOLED screens which is even better.
👍Innovation going in the right direction. However, the lack of inside out tracking, audio and perhaps eye tracking (at this price point) is a no go for me. Will wait for crystal super (albeit not my favorite size and form) as my G2 replacement for MSFS/DCS.
Very intriguing first impressions Seb (loving the T-Shirt btw). 🤟
4k per screen but no eye tracking
So no way to run that with good FPS even with RTX 5090, or maybe x)
This may be my next headset
This sounds like exactly what i want right now. I just want high quality eye tracking that can potentially be used for foveated rendering. this is a big must for resolutions like these. Unfortunately we probably won't see full utilization until the next valve headset forces steam support for such a thing. I would still like the hardware if I'm to leave the Beyond.
You need edge to edge perfect clarity for proper/full FR. Without that all you have is fixed FR at the centre, and that's not FR i.e. what's the point of 2/4/8k if the image, outside the sweet spot, is blurry.
@@ChrisM541 I understand what you mean, but I don't think it's an argument against eye tracking foviated rendering. What you've described would be justification for implementing fixed FR on something like the Beyond, but not something like the quest 3 or pro. Their sweet spots and clarity at higher fovs are good enough to allow you to look around. As we increase the size of the sweet spot and the resolution of the panels, you will eventually take performance where you can find it. Eye tracking will be the best way to do that without losing fidelity.
@@HeckinDoga Eye tracking is the future, definitely, just as full frame ray tracing is also the future. I just wish more focus was put on getting the weak links fixed first. Still, it's true to say that this doesn't stop working on both at once.
It's also important to understand that FR, done properly, involves a significant change to the game engine itself...and not only at the driver level as Nvidia's faux FR will have you believe.
You’re upload sooo fast!!👍
Yeah if this was inside out tracking it would be perfect
I just bought a Bigscreen Beyond, but will seriously be considering this once it is officially released next year. :)
Great video thank you.
For me I would like a headset with these lenses / screens etc but I'm happy for a bigger form factor to scrap the lighthouse tracking
It feels like there are a lot of headsets that have 90% of what we want but none tick all the boxes lol
Hecking sweet piece of hardware. Lighthouse => less hardware in HMD => lighter. Something for everyone who says Crystal light is too heavy.
vastly overestimating the weight of a couple of cameras and an IMU
@@abeidiot and compute and cooling, you don't simply transmit the image for 2 4k screens *and* cameras *and* sensors *and then* compute tracking matrices in time for the next frame at like 120fps, bundle of cables ofc skipped
Yes, considering that modern hi-res cameras can be fitted into a space a few millimeters thick...
would gladly trade ipd adjustment automated motors for inside out tracking.
Yeah the Q3 has cameras and a battery in the headset and weighs only like 500ish g.
Will this one work natively with Linux? Still holding out for a next generation one... Index 2. But this one was not on my radar and sounds really good!
probably not without alot of tinkering, too push out all those pixels it relies heavily on Nvidia software, cant even use it with an AMD card.
@@yukihiroshishido8093 Oh really??? I have an AMD card :O
This is what I was expecting from Google, Meta, HTC like 2 years ago. I feel like should add a part to make this into inside out tracking as well. I do think inside out is now the default min for tracking. Base station set-up is just a no-go. It would be great if they partnered with meta to run their OS; this would open the market up beyond PC VR.
Then it wouldn't be this small, it'd be Quest sized.
@@khaledassaf6356 That's why I said add-on. It would be optional. Probably work like the slot Valve Index has with processing box in your pocket.
@@zangarkhan that seems like would make it overcomplicated with bunch add ons and costs etc and base stations might not be the best for initial setup wise they are still best and most accurate tracking we have that enthusiasts want for full body tracking etc.
Agreed with you!
It has a USB c slot so anything is possible
The way the headset is mounted reminds me of Military night vision devices.
Love all the ideas and concepts, but stripping it clean means its directly competing with the Beyond... which is like, half the price if they are launching at that price.
Only real benefit are the displays (that no modern graphics card could easily run) and the mounting method. Which is quite nice, don't get me wrong!
I think the only real hitch is that they haven't really successfully shipped any of their previous designs yet.
Would have loved this, had it been like half that price.
I want one, this looks perfect
It looks like a clever design for the Headstrap. I like the move in and out with the flip up feature. But, Pimax Crystal Light is going to be my PCVR headset for many moons 🌙. I don’t need another headset I just need more amazing games. But, this headset is definitely impressive. Thanks for sharing. You’re Awesome! My friend… 😉👌🙋🏻♂️🫶
You need more amazing games??? You never heard UEVR mod? We got way too many and i don't even know if i can keep up with 13,000 Unreal engine 4,5 games 😂
@ji3200 Yes, this UEVR injector is an amazing mod when it works properly. It is frustrating for me every time I try to get into a game. I always have a struggle finding the perfect settings. I still haven't been able to get Dead Island 2 working with it. I know it works because I have seen TH-cam videos of people playing it with UEVR. I try to play Black Myth Wukong using the UEVR, and it isn't a great experience. I can only manage to get excellent visuals or excellent performance, not both. Note: I am using a Pimax Crystal Light with 4090 card. I really want an official virtual reality game that doesn't require all this tinkering. If the UEVR injector worked flawlessly for me. I would probably enjoy it more. I don't mind using playing with a controller. Luke Ross mods are cool but again lack the feel of an official game made for VR.
This is incredible. It's almost what we all want. This headset with passthrough and battery and I would happily buy for £1500-2000!
A battery will kill its main feature: being superlight.
I agree, the future of VR is moving in that direction: light headset, 4K microOled panels, pancake lenses, built-in diottical correction.
But not with the base stations tracking. In my opinion.
Cheers this looks awesome, now please hurry up and bring it to the UK Shiftall!
What to push this monster? Two upcoming 5090 in SLI?
A 4k PCVR headset with no eye-tracking...are people actually demented???Don't they understand what eye-tracking is?
@@r.m8146 I didn'\t mentioned eye tracking? Where did you pulled that info from? It has two display of 4k resolution, almost two Pimax Crystal.
@@Pe11ePD Eye tracking can help significantly reduce the GPU demands through foveated rendering.
@@AlexysRM I'm aware of that. Foveated rendering helps performance around 20%, so it does also in Pimax Crystal. Both have foveated rendering and eye tracking, and still this MeganeX has 8k pixels vs 5k in the Crystal.
One for each eye.
Exciting!!!!
Really curious about the edge to edge clarity. It’s so bad in the beyond I don’t even use that headset anymore
Wow at least based on your initial impressions it seems to have The Beyond beat in every area except looks (this one is personal but I doubt many will are you The Beyond looks worse) and the custom fit interface (which some people see as a drawback because they can’t share it). Well I guess The Beyond could be lower on price too since I haven’t heard an official price for The Megane X. Such an exciting time for PCVR fans and thanks for the video!
This is awesome, thank you!
For VRChat people on Lighthouse gear with FBT and who have Diver-X, UDCAP, or Immersive Gloves coming in the future, this is a no brainer upgrade from the Index. From the Beyond, it might possibly be worth it. Would be nice to get a more details on the lenses and the comfort of the headstrap. Wonder why they aren't utilizing that slot on the forehead for a top strap yet?
The way the glasses swing up, it's just like a set of military NVG, what a great idea, it's kinda obvious when you look at it. Just wish the price was more reasonable, but given time?
I can see this form factor becoming the standard.
This has been done before quite a few times. The problem is that this sort of hinge doesn't hold the headset tight to the face, and so you loose a few IPD points.
Looks like those army nocturnal vision glasses.
That’s pretty cool must says
I like how they mount it to the headstrap with what looks like someting from a night vision army helmet mount, that gives it a lot of adjustment and flip-up ability. Those things are expensive though
This looks awesome and I'm very happy for Shiftall, but that price is going to make it extremely slow to pick up if it will manage to at all. If they could get it down to even the price of the Bigscreen Beyond then they would have a much more competitive product.
that accordion gasket is what they used back in the day for cameras im pretty sure. how does it feel though?
the structure does seem flimsy, hopefully they allow third party straps.
PSVR2 has a similar gasket arrangement - I find it very comfortable. Of course it only works if the HMD is supported correctly by the halo strap so the gasket isn't bearing weight. Overall, I prefer it to squishing down foam padding.
So my first thought is, another lighthouse headset? Wish it wasn't. Something so small and convenient should have its own tracking solution.
It's small because tracking and compute is off headset. Same story with the Beyond.
@@fullstomache so, camera sensors can only be designed large?
@@JPWestmas From what I understand it require onboard computing, sensors and probably a cooling solution, making the headset heavier and bulkier.
@@fullstomache tracking cameras are really small, and don't require any onboard compute.. the compute part in camera-based tracking is handled by the PC.
@@PromethorYT bro, why does my psvr2 work out of the box on pc then? camera's are cheap and take up no space at all. it was probably easier for them to use lighthouse compared to developing their own tracking.
Looks interesting... What about audio? will there be an over-ear solution from the vendor?
needs a headstrap with audio like the beyond go for sure.
though it looks like the ports are all on the underside front. which is a terrible place to have an audio cable hanging down if thats where it is.. when you want to tilt the headset up youre going to have a wire in your face...
love the form factor, would like to see different head mounting options
Finally! I'm excited to buy this and hopefully replace my main vr headset. Woooooah. Good binocular overlap as well?!?! I'm sold. I imagine the panels themselves make this headset so damn expensive.
The placement of the Display Port cable is awkward - but given the design understandable. Maybe they could have run the connection to the back of the headstrap...
Great review, thanks! Personally I do not mind that it is lighthouse tracked, I have Reverb G2 en before that an Index. The headset tracking of the G2 is fine but that of the controllers is not, so therefore the lighthouse preference. Also I hope they’ll come up with an audio solution
Another great form factor, great visuals and only Supported via SteamVR headset ..... Please, ask if they would support OpenXR ???
This headset looks perfect from what I can see. Might even be a worthy upgrade to the Crystal.
Any idea on brightness? I think the dude in the video mentioned something about still tweaking that? Any idea of any audio solutions they'll have with this, or will we need to bring our own?
Still not a fan of that name, though, lol, but the product, on paper at least, looks like what we've been asking for.
This MeganeX definitely looks exciting and solves many problems. My concerns are #1 cost, and then how durable the lens coating will be, no built-in audio solution, and no info on a microphone. It will also be interesting to see how they solve refresh rate through the PC connection.
It does have dual microphones.
How many nits of brightness??! This is a super important spec
All VR headsets should have these IPD and Dioptre adjustments. But I don't need 8K, just good 2 to 4k with great audio. I went from inbuilt audio to none with the Aero and it is a pain!
Excellent. I'm interesting in buying one of these if it works well in DCS.
I saw on the website that it isn’t compatible with AMD GPUs. Will that change in the future?
Interesting no one is talking about this!!! WTH!!!! Great COVERAGE BRO!!!
Ya. Why no one talk about this.
@@TTwk I few names like Brad Lynch and Brad are.
this headset looks awesome. I’m looking to buy a vr headset and this might just be the one i go for. I tried the quest 3 and vision pro but i’m still searching for the one i really want to buy
Don't, see the other comments on this video. This is crazy expensive for an headset with so little features, small fov, no wireless, no built-in audio, no tracking whatsoever. The only good thing it has is the per eye resolution and being lightheight
If image quality is pretty much your only desire for VR, then this sounds great.
I however see 102fov as OK not good, 110 or around that is GOOD. IMO
Also that price tag for a headset that appears to need light towers is a bit much. Guessing that display costs 80% of the price.
sounds like an Immersed Visor to me (which is released 01/2025). But with the difference that its more expensive than the Immersed Visor
Pricey, but they don't have an app store ecosystem to get money back so not surprising. Looking forward to the second video.
This needs to have eye tracking. I was considering buying one due to the DP connection and formfactor. But I already have ordered the Visor and the Play For Dreams MR which both have eye tracking and inside out tracking. Supposedly visor will have a thunderbolt connection which is higher bandwidth than DP1.4. Although I already have base stations and stream controllers, this product is a hard sell at that price. I will have to use its cost to go toward a new RTX 5090 instead.
What’s the refresh rate? 90Hz?
before right this moment, I had never heard of meganex or their superlight 8k, but it sounds really impressive and I'd like to see and know more about it. are these final production models or prototypes that you are testing at this event? what kind of tracking / control system does it use? is it pc vr only or does it have an integrated computer? - what's the pass-through/MR camera situation? I want to know everything!
Its like valve Index. You need to buy kits
@@ji3200 so does i use index base stations and controllers? (because I already own them)
Other than the lack of inside out tracking this design is the best i have yet to seen.
I wonder at what resolutions does it run at, as it has no eye tracking for foveated transport and DP 1.4.
DP 2.0 confirmened on RTX 5000...
DP 1.4 isn't an issue. DSC allows to circumvent bandwidth limitation.
@@chadef555 Ok, did not think about that. Makes sense as even at the combined resolution of 27.2MP its still less than what 8k is. So you might be able to just squeeze the 90hz out of it.
"coated to prevent glare".. as the shot on screen has the lenses covered on face grease 😂
The face grease is the coating! Haha! No more glare! But also no picture! ;)
I was wondering if 4k meant 2160x2160 or 3840x3840 but sharper than the apple vision pro is quite crazy. I know that one is pretty clear
Hi Sebastian! could you please try to get the play for dream MR headset and put a review?
Its lack of eye tracking capability is a big concern.
For stereoscopic rendering with *Dual 4K screen* , *forveated rendering* is a *MUST Have* , otherwise this HMD can render even a 4090 down to its knees, barely go past 60FPS (except for very simplistic scenes, you could easily push the pipeline past thousands of FPS with onky a box and a plane 😁). Rendering on Varjo HMD has already proven to be a daunting task for 4090 w/o forveated rendering (2880 x 2720 per Eye). Not to say 3840 x 3840 or 4320 x 4320. Lighthouse tracking is good despite many dislike its one time setup and additional base station costs. It allows *less circuitry & battery on your head* , much less latency, and much less error-prone than the inside-out camera based tracking. Keep HMD lighter and simpler.
Lastly, the price *US$1899 Only for 1 Headset* without controllers, base stations, etc is kinda too luxrious for the majority (>97%) of casual VR gamers. 😅 Can't it be cheaper with lower resolution and higher refresh rate (>90Hz)?
I would only add eye tracking for me, only for quad view foveated rendering. I can't live without it now (sim for DCS)
The product is cool, but for this price it should at least have eye tracking. To be perfect it would have to have eye tracking + inside-out tracking. With both, it would be an excellent VR headset to carry around and perhaps use with a very powerful gaming notebook.
Been waiting for so long shiftall.....but 1899 USD???? :(
Reasonable price for a high tech design considering an inflation. In 2004 this device would cost $200-250.
Well done on bringing us this news, meganex was not really in the radar for me until this vid…. They should have paid for your flights at the very least !
All also, what are the refresh rate options?
Love the form factor! Impressive resolution but no GPU will be able to make use of its capabilities for quite a while: I mean, render 2x4k at 72hz or more... no way. Not to mention the price. But it pushes the tech in the right direction, so kudos there!
One gpu no, but 2 would be fine. A gpu for an eye. I mean this is the future, you can’t make gpus just bigger and bigger, there will be a moment when they’ll be sold in pairs.
I like the form factor, but having it rest on the forehead, even at its light weight, can give headaches. If it had eye tracking (likely unrealistic in the current gen micro -form factor) I would certainly be considering a pre-order. I need to see reviews.
Looks more like a military device. Looks nice.
Wow
It would have been worth the price if it had had inside out tracking and passthrough capability. Have to wait a couple of more years to replace the Quest 3.
1:40 quest 3 has that too
Does it suffer like BSB from screens giving off heat warming your eyes which is annoying? If not that would be great
I had that problem too because of how thick custom face cushion is but this one is very thin like psvr 2 face cushion
its 4k micro OLED, which is going to generate a fair bit of heat so would not surprise me
Looks promising. Just to verify, the 6DoF lighthouse tracking was currently working as well? So you could shift your head up, down or to the side and the view would change appropriately?
Would this be better than the upcoming Pimax Super?
Im canceling pimax Super and preordered this today. Old Crystal was too damm heavy and uncomfortable and Super will be heavy too
Looks awesome, does it have inside out tracking and wireless vr capability?
Like to get info in the lenses and eye-relief?? without that, then it doesn't matter how good the specs are. Can you compare to the Quest3 lenses?
Future of VR? Nah, I'm so tired of sacrificing immersion and features for the sake of extra resolution or making it smaller.
100 degree FoV? How are we 8 years into VR and going BACKWARDS on FoV??? We should be hitting 180 at the very least as a standard by now.
No eye tracking?
No face tracking?
No hand tracking?
No integrated audio?
No wireless??
Costs $1,900?
Hard pass...
Most people who are into pc vr probably have good headset and base stations. And as for hand/face/eye tracking? Who needs that stuff anyway? I can understand eye tracking to be able to reduce to computational requirements but in my experience most games dont need that to run well, especially if you have a gaming pc. As for wireless, I have Quest 3 and I cant recall the last time I used its wireless features. It sucks ass and drops the resolution. the technology is not there yet
Eye tracking needs to become a standardized feature for something that sits on your eyes.
This is there bare bones headset much like the BSB was going for, all these features add weight, the goal of these headsets are to make it as comfortable and light as possible. Varjo, Somnium, and Pimax all make HMDs with the features you were mentioning(wide FOV, face tracking, passthrough etc), at a similar price range, but these headsets are much bulkier and heavy. They are much more popular among the sim community as they generally play seated where wide FOV and other features trump form factor and weight. While the big screen is popular for those in VRChat wear comfort and ease of use is a more significant factor, although face tracking seems to be a more and more desired feature for social VR these days...
