Buddhism arose in the 5th century BC North India. It adapted to caste. ❤Modern Buddhist scholarship indicates that 80% of the Buddhist Sangha or clergy in the time of the Buddha hailed from the Brahmana, Kshatriya and Vaishya castes. 40% of the Sangha at that time belonged to the Brahmana caste. ❤The Buddhavamsa, a Pali language scripture part of the Theravada or Hinayana tradition, indicates that Gautama, the Buddha was born into the Kshatriya caste. The future Buddha, Maitreya will be born into the Brahmana caste. The three Buddhas prior to Gautama were Kakusanda, Konagamana and Kassapa, all of whom belonged to the Brahmana caste. The Lalitavistara, a 3rd century Buddhist scripture, explicitly mentions that a Buddha can only be born a Brahmana or Kshatriya and can never come from any of the “lower castes”. There was little room for those of humble birth, low origin and without lineage to be a Buddha.❤ Old Sinhala language religious documents such as the Pujavaliya, the Saddharmaratnavaliya, the Kadayimpoth, and the Niti Nighanduwa refer to an elaborately ordered caste hierarchy in Buddhist Sri Lanka. In the 2nd century BC, the famed Sinhala king Dutugemenu had a son by the name of Saliya. Saliya was exiled because he had married the outcaste girl Asokamala. In the 11th century AD, King Vijaybahu denied access to the lower Sinhala castes to venerate Buddha’s foot print at the summit of Sri Pada in central Sri Lanka. The lower castes were confined to a terrace much further down. King Nissanka Malla in the 12 century felt threatened by the dominant Sinhala caste, the Govigama. He warned them in stone inscriptions to never aspire to high office. Much later, the Siam Nikaya, the Buddhist Sangha in Sri Lanka, denied membership to those who were not of the Govigama caste. This forced the Karava, the Salagama and Durava castes to seek ordination in Myanmar. Many others converted to Christianity in protest.❤ The Practical Sinhala Dictionary published as late as 1983 by the Government of Sri Lanka referred to the caste divisions in Sinhala society where the Govi were declared high caste and others denied that characterization. This forced the Karava, Salagama and Durave caste petitioners to appeal to the Supreme Court to have the caste references deleted by judicial order, a ruling that was subsequently granted❤ So what is caste in Sinhala Buddhism At the apex, one has the Govigama or agriculturalist land owning castes who account for roughly 50% of the Sinhalese population. All Sri Lankan Presidents and Prime Ministers with the exception of Ranasinghe Premadasa, belonged to this caste. Many had Anglican Christian antecedents like Bandaranaike, the founder of the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party. He was born and buried an Anglican although he espoused a Buddhism and Sinhala nationalism to win the polls in 1956 even if his shrill demagoguery triggered a Tamil separatist response. Sri Lanka’s current President Mahinda Rajapakse is also from a prominent Govigama family. Sri Lanka’s elite families hail from this caste. They include the low-country Goonetillekes, the Jayewardenes, the Bandaranaikes, the Senanayakes, the Kotelawalas, the de Sarams, the de Liveras, the de-Tisseras, the Wijewardenes and so on. Then there were the up-country Kandyan Ratwattes (Sirimavo was one), the Meedeniyas, the Eknoligodas, the Dunuwilles, the Tennekoons, the Moonemalles, the Nugawelas, the Panabokkes and the Kobbekaduwas.❤ Many of the low-country Govigama elite embraced Anglicanism and rose the ranks of the colonial bureaucracy. They were the favoured and trusted lieutenants of English rule. With independence and the emergence of political Buddhism, many returned to Buddhism. Jayewardene, Kotelawala, Bandaranaike and Wickremasinghe were examples. The Govigama elite had collaborated with the colonial masters benefiting in terms of employment, education and land ownership. The Maha Mudaliyar Christofel de Saram and his son Johannes Hendrick were examples of the deracinated and Anglicized Govigama elite in the early 1800s. The de Sarams were the forebearers of the Jayewardenes. Just below are the Karava or fishermen caste who dominate the maritime districts. The Karava account for roughly 10% of the Sinhala population. The Karava challenged Govigama power in the two Sinhala youth revolts of 1971 and 1987 led by the Janatha Vimukti Peramuna (JVP). The JVP was led by Rohana Wijeweera. The JVP appealed to the dispossessed and poor. While it did not articulate its ideology in terms of caste, its caste base was exclusively non Govigama. General Sarath Fonseka, who led the war successfully against the Tamil Tigers, was also of the Karava caste and ran for the position of President against Mahinda Rajapakse. He was jailed soon thereafter.❤❤ While many of the low country Govigama had become Anglican during colonial rule, about half of the Karave Sinhala population converted to Roman Catholicism❤❤ Sinhala Karava western maritime belt of Puttalam, Chilaw, Wennapuwa, Negombo, Ja-Ela, Wattala, North Colombo, Moratuwa and to a lesser extent Panadura had become Catholic. The Sri Lankan navy has traditionally been a Karave preserve. Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith is of the Sinhala Karava caste. ❤💚 The third caste of consequence was the Salagama or Cinnamon Peeler who accounted for roughly 5% of the Sinhala population. The veteran Sri Lankan politician C.P. de Silva belonged to his caste. He was denied the Prime Ministership in the 1960s. This forced him to abandon the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. Nimal Siripala de Silva, another prominant Sinhala politician, also belongs to this caste💚 The Durave or toddy tapper castes are related to the Ezhavas of Kerala or the Nadar or Tamil Nadu. Mangala Samaraweera, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, one time member of the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party and fired by President Rajapakse belongs to the Durave caste.💚 Other significant castes includes the Wahumpura or jaggery makers, the Padu or palanquin bearers and the Beravas or drummers (from the South Indian root - parai). There were two Sinhala outcastes, the Rodiya and the Kinnaras or mat weavers. The Wahumpura, the Padu, the Berava and the Rodi joined the JVP youth revolt in large numbers. 😂 Wimal Weerawansa, staunch anti Tamil, belongs to the Berava caste💚💚💚😂 !!! The Portuguese arrived on our shores in 1505 AD. We were ruled by the Europeans for approximately 450 years. This dented the caste divisions in Sinhala society as did the left movement that was intellectually dominant between the 1930s and the 1950s prior to the emergence of a Buddhist nationalism.💚 Salagama candidates get appointed to seats in Balapitiya, Boosa and Rathgama while Karave candidates are nominated for Karave constituencies. But it is the Buddhist Sangha or clergy which traditionally had been most divided by caste.💚 The dominant Siam Nikaya was once exclusively confined to the Govigama caste and remains overwhelmingly Govigama. The Karava, Salagama and Durava castes obtained ordination in Myanmar setting up the Amarapura Nikaya❤ The Buddhist modernist Ramanya Nikaya sect rejected caste as a qualification for entry into the Sangha. Each of the three sects run their own temples.❤ In short, Sinhala Buddhism was ordered on the basis of caste.❤ Elections were held in 1911 for the Educated Ceylonese Seat in the colonial legislature. Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan, a Tamil, ran against Sir Marcus Fernando, a Karava Sinhalese. The Govigama Sinhalese voted enmasse for Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan in order to deny Marcus Fernando a seat. They succeeded! But not all Sinhala Buddhists accepted the subjugation they had to endure as witnessed in the recent bloody JVP insurrections. It is estimated that 20,000 Sinhala youth were killed in 1971 and 60,000 were killed in 1989 as the military crushed the youth insurgencies. Most of the dead belonged to the non-Govigama castes.❤❤
Sri Lanka has had a history of conflict between its minority Hindu Tamils and majority Buddhists since its political independence from Great Britain in 1948. Paul Wirz in the 1930s wrote about tensions between Hindus and Buddhists regarding the ownership and mode of ritual practice in Kataragama. For the past millennia the majority of the pilgrims were Hindus from Sri Lanka and South India who undertook an arduous pilgrimage on foot.By the 1940 roads were constructed and more and more Sinhala Buddhists began to take the pilgrimage. This increased the tensions between the local Hindus and Buddhists about the ownership and type of rituals to be used. The government interceded on behalf of the Buddhists and enabled the complete takeover of the temple complex and in effect the shrines have become an adjunct to the Buddhist Kiri Vehera.Protests occurred upon this development in the 1940s, particularly when restrictions were placed on Tamil worship at the shrine.Typical Tamil Hindu rituals at Kataragama such as fire walking, Kavadi dance and body piercing have been taken over by the Buddhists and have been spread to the rest of the island. The Buddhist takeover of the temple and its rituals has profoundly affected the rationale nature of austere Theravada Buddhism practiced in Sri Lanka to that of the personal Bhakti veneration of deities found amongst the Hindus of Sri Lanka and South India. The loss of Hindu influence within the temple complex has negatively affected the Sri Lankan Tamil Hindu society.According to Paul Younger, the Buddhist takeover was precipitated by the overwhelming participation of Buddhists in what are essentially Hindu rituals that worried the Buddhist establishment. There is a strong political and religious pressure to further modify the temple rituals to conform within an orthodox Theravada Buddhist world view.Karthika, Karthikeyan, Karthik, Murugan, Aarumugan, Kartika
These Nayak’s embraced Buddhism and took up Sinhala names. Some of them if they arrived young were raised and lived their lives as Sinhalese one of such example was the king known as Rajadhi Rajasingha he was entirely brought up and educated by the prelates of the Malwatu temple❤️.Majority of the Sri Lankans are Sinhalese and they follow Theravada buddhism which is based on genuine teachings of Buddha. Buddha is revered and used as a teacher but not as a god. But ironically many Sinhalese worship him in Sri Lanka. Along with Buddha they also worship other Hindu deities such as Shiva, Vishnu, Murugan etc!!!❤️In my area northern part of Jaffna we worship Muruga, Shiva as well as all other gods.💚Laxmi - Sinhalese also worship the Hindu goddess of wealth.❤️Pattini - associated with woman's purity, Kannagi in the Tamil language.❤️Kali maniyo- the goddess kali in Hinduism❤️Eeshwara- god shiva❤️Katharagama - Murugan in Tamil and Karthikeyan in . Hindu god of war❤️Gana deviyo- ganesha or pillyar. Lord Buddha was born as Hindu, and as I see Hinduism is like an ocean, and various tributaries came out of it. It is/was almost impossible to detach Hinduism from other religions which evolved out of Hinduism.💚Simply even Buddhism has Hindu roots. If Buddhism does not protest it can be very well concluded under the recently coined umbrella term (Hinduism)💚
Sinhalese are not originally South Indians like Tamils & Malayalees. They are originally from North Eastern India - Bengal and thus not South Indians like Malayalees & Tamils. And using masks during traditional dances (folk dances) is probably a Bengali (Vangan) habit. Bengalis of North Eastern India also use masks during their traditional "Chhau" dance. Chhau Dance - West Bengal, Orissa & Jharkhand. According to mahavama great chronicles of srilankan history ancestors of sinhalese were originally came from vanga desha.(modern day Bengal and Odisha area). Further ,genetic admixture of sinhalese people according to most recent studies is 72% bengali , 16% south indian tamil and 12% gujarati . Sinhalese doesn't looking like Indian Bengalis or Bangladeshi Bengalis. They are looking similar to South Indian population.(More accurately South Indian Tamils).Sinhalese ,Some of the Sri Lankan dishes have striking resemblance to Kerala cuisine, which could be due to the similar geographic and agricultural features with Kerala. Between 1517 and 1638, the island was under Portuguese rule. Many words in Sinhalese sound like Portuguese words and some food. like short eats are reminiscent of that time. The Portuguese Kandyan King asked the Dutch for help at the beginning of the 1600s. The Dutch-Portuguese war raged for years, ending in a Dutch victory and subsequent take over of part of the island. The Kandyan King kept his place in Kandy. The descendants of the Dutch settlers are called Burghers and are still a considerable group in Sri Lanka !!! Their ancestors are believed to have come from northern India, traditionally in the 5th century BCE. Their language belongs to the Indo-European family. Sinhalese surnames often originate from Sanskrit. However, as a consequence of the Portuguese invasion of Sri Lanka, during the 16th and 17th centuries, many Portuguese language surnames were adopted among the Sinhalese people. As a result, Perera and Fernando eventually became the most common names in Sri Lanka. Don’t delete this 🖼️ article. Already saved!! From Canada 🇨🇦
According to a genetic admixture study by Dr. Gautam K. Kshatriya in 1995, the Sri Lankan Tamil are closely related to the Sinhalese who are closely related.!!! Sinhalese and tamils both have similar surnames. Sinhalese call chandarsekara, tamils call chandrasekaram. Sinhalese call premachandra tamils call premachandran. But tamil naming system is different!!! Srilankan tamils have genetic similarities with sinhalese people. Sinhalese have genetic similarities with north indians than indian tamils. Because of their significant genetic relationship with indian tamils srilankan tamils are generally darker than sinhalese people and some look exactly similar to indian tamils. Sinhalese have similarities with bengali people and other east indians. One could clearly recognize tamils because of their appearance.!!! According to Mahavamsa, when the first Sinhalese, Prince Vijaya arrived in Srilanka with his 700 friends, there were two different communites were already living in Srilanka. They were Naagar and Iyakkar. Both of these tribes were worshiping Lord Shiva.!!! According to Hindu religion, Lord Shiva is a Tamil god. Therefore, it is assumed that the early people of Srilanka were either Tamils or has connection with Tamils in Tamil Nadu!!!! But later Sinhalese do got mixed up with bit of south indian genes due to close locations( cholas, cheras and pandyans). Buddhism was introduced in SL, King Deva Nambiya Theesa converted from Saivam to Buddhism.Vijaya came from India with 700 friends .Vijaya married Pandian Tamil Princess from Tamil Nadu. So, 100% of the Sinhalese people were born to Tamil mothers.
important characteristic in the Sinhalese caste system is that the family name or the surname details the ancestry. The original name was given based on where one lived. Later, honorary terms, granted by the king based on a person's service to the kingdom, were added to the original name. This continued for generations and resulted in very long names. In General Bandara, Disawe, Mudiyanse, Adikari, Appuhamy, Nawaratne, Jayathilaka, Gunathilaka, Jayawardana, Wijayawardhana, Wijeyasundara, Gunawardhana, Siriwardhana, Abeywardhana, Abeysiriwardhana, Abeygunawardhana, Dharmawardhana, Bandaranayake, Dissanayake, Alahakoon, Amarakoon, Weerakoon, Tennakoon, Ilangakon, Kulatunga, Madawala, Wijekoon, Amarakoon, Rathnasinghe, Ranasinghe, Wijesinha, Dunuwille, Dunusinghe, Wickramasinghe, Rajapaksha, Molamure, Meedeniya, Kiriella, Herath, Yapa, Unambuwe, Rekawa, Balasooriya, Iddamalgoda, Ganegoda, Halangoda, Kodagoda, Kobbakaduwa, Arachchi, Vidhane are considered to be names taken up by Govigama people, and these names were extended according to the ranking in the service of the kingdom. Further variations exist due to changes during the colonial period. Historic literature and inscriptional evidence from the feudal period show that this hierarchy prevailed throughout the feudal period until the collapse of Sri Lankan kingdoms and social structure under the onslaught of European colonialism. However, even in the present day, Sinhalese people look at surnames and ancestry when it comes to marriages. name and religious conversions, Govigama families too became Christian and had Portuguese/Christian names (some strangely adopted during British/Dutch times) such as Don Davith (Rajapaksas), Barthlamew (Senanayakes), Ridgeway Dias (Nilaperumal/Bandaranaykes), Pererala, Arnolis Dep (Wijewardane), Corea, Ilangakoon, de Saa Bandaranaike, Obeyesekere, de Saram, de Alwis, etc. It is also why all elite Sri Lankans of the British period be it farmer or other wise had English first names. The Goyigama also were pioneer arrack renters of the colonial era.❤️important characteristic in the Sinhalese caste system is that the family name or the surname details the ancestry. Many of the dishes eaten among all Sri Lankans were created by the Sri Lankan Malays. Some of the popular dishes eaten by Sri Lankan Malays include kaha bath (nasi kunyit), nasi goreng, satay, babath and tripe, mee goreng (fried noodles), dodol, serikaya, kuih cina (seenakku), nasi kebuli, wattalapan, achcharu (Malay pickle), ekor sop, pittu and kospang (lavariya ❤️Sri Lankan Malays and influences from the Malay and Javanese cultures have contributed a lot to Sri Lankan culture in general. The sarong is the traditional garment of all Sri Lankan communities and it is of Malay/Indonesian origin. Pictured below is a model wearing a modernised version of a traditional sarong.🧡There is a big batik industry in Sri Lanka and it’s very popular in the country. You can find many batik items in Sri Lanka from clothing to bags and sheets.❤️Many Sri Lankan Malays have intermarried with other Sri Lankans (especially Sri Lankan Moors) and from the 19th century onwards, Sri Lankan Malays have married Sinhalese women. Additionally, Sri Lanka has a long history with the Malays and Javanese of Southeast Asia. For hundreds of years, Malays/Javanese travelled to Sri Lanka using sampans and at one point in time, part of Sri Lanka was ruled by Chandrabhanu, a Malay king, who also brought his people known as the Javakas who were of Javanese descent🧡.lankan malay are people who migrated to island of Sri Lanka from Malay-Indonesian archipelago.💚The sea coast town of Hambanthota /හම්බන්තොට (a Sinhalese variant of Sampan and Tota standing for landing bay) probably had welcomed the Sampan-sailing Malays who settled and merged with the ancient Sri Lankan population.❤️
Actually speaking, in Kerala, excepting the Nairs and Namboothiris, the ancient people who inhabited the Chera Tamil Kingdom were the Tamils, and they were Sri Lankan Tamils, Though Senguttuvan probably spoke Tamil, he was still technically a Keralite, part of the larger Tamilakam. By this time a separate Keralite identify was probably not as pronounced as it was in later centuries. Other than this most other strong Keralite connections with the island lie elsewhere where they are mentioned by their name separately from Tamils. Keralites had been migrating to the island as mercenaries, merchants, and other settlers in successive waves at different time periods.🧡from Jaffna of the Royal Lineage of Malyyers. This is the reason why they Keralites are known as Malayalees. Not only the Tamil dialect, their dressing, food habits, architecture martial arts etc, are very similar to Sri Lankan Tamils.Ezhavas and Thiyyas were the original Keralites. Ezhava means a person from Eelam, Eelam refers to the Tamilians living area in Sri Lanka.Thiyya or Thiyyan means Islander. Sri Lanka is the closest Island to Chera Kingdom (today’s Kerala) Ezhava or Ilavas were the Rulers of Chera Tamil Kingdom. The term Ilava comes from the Tamil term Villava -> Ilav!!! 💛The Tamil epic Silappatikaram, which was composed by a Chera prince from what is modern-day Kerala, mentions that Sinhalese king Gajabahu I who reigned during the late 2nd century CE visited Kerala and was present in the consecration ceremony of the Kannagi shrine (the deified protagonist) inaugurated under the patronage of king Senguttuvan and he is described as praying to the goddess seeking her blessing for his country. The epic later mentions that Gajabahu built a shrine for Kannagi in his own country and performed daily sacrifices:❤️In Tamil Sangam Literatures, there are a lot of mention about these Ezhavas as “SANTROR .“SANTROR” were learned and noble people. In Tamil Nadu also there are a group of people in the Southern most districts called Shanars, a term derived from the Original Word “SANTROR” meaning Noble and Learned person. In TN, they are known as Nadars.Sri Lanka, which was earlier ruled by the Pandyan Kings was known by the term THAPROBANE, after the name of the river “THAMIRABARANI” which flows in Tirunelveli of Tamil Nadu, which was the former capital of the Pandyas, before the Capital was shifted to Madurai by the Telugu Naickers. Some Tamils in Tamil Nadu also consider that Sri Lankan Tamil is the original Tamil, which is closely related to the Tamil spoken in Southern districts of persent day Tamil Nadu and Malayalam of Kerala. This is the reason why not only the Language, but Dressing styles like the tying of Dhotis, Martial Arts Kalaripayattu of Thiyyas and Ezahvas are similar to Angampora, the Architecture of Sri Lanka (which uses Maamuni Mayans Vaastu Saathra, quiet distinct from North Indians Aryan Vaastu) is used in Kerala and the food habits wherein Sri Lankan Tamils and Keralites use a lot of coconut products. from Polonnaruwa during the reign of king Vijayabahu I (1055-1110) in the 12th century CE shows an agreement by the Velakkara mercenaries (of Dravidian origin) to protect and maintain the Temple of the Tooth. This inscription reveals that though the regiments were mostly made of Tamils it also had separate units of Vaṭukar and Malayālar!! The Culavamsa further notes Keralite mercenaries also made up the army of the Sinhalese king Parakramabahu I during his reign in the 12th century CE. It is argued that Kerala mercenaries formed a large contingent of Parakramabahu’s army which dislodged the Cholas from the island during this time. The text goes onto mention that Sinhalese and Keralite inhabitants planned with the Tamil mercenaries to revolt against Parakramabahu and seize his kingdom but the king had them all slaughtered and gave away their lands to assemblies of monks💚💚. In the 13th century CE, Keralites and Tamils made up the army of a prince from Kalinga (east-central India) known as Kalinga Magha who invaded the island. This was a significant event as it gave rise to the Tamil Jaffna Kingdom in the northern region of the island. It must have been a brutal conquest as it for the first time established a permanent foreign kingdom in the island and the Culavamsa reserves the harshest of condemnations for Magha and his army who are denounced as wicked and followers of false faiths. It describes in details the atrocities of Keralite soldiers, who crying out boastfully, “Lo ! we are the giants of Kerala,” went on a rampage of destruction. Interestingly the monarch of the island at the time was a Tamil Pandyan king who was killed by the invading forces. Then the text goes onto say that Magha gave his Keralite soldiers “fields and pastures, houses and gardens, servants and oxen and buffaloes”. The text describes how Sinhalese down south built strongholds in the mountainous parts of the country to keep away the “Kerala demons”.💚💚 An anthropologist of Tamil society, Dennis B. McGilvray, argues that the Makkuvar Tamil community in the eastern province of Sri Lanka descend from the Keralites of Magha’s invasion:💚Malayalam and Tamil share the same proto family. ❤️❤️Malayalam borrowed more words from Sanskrit.❤️ Malayalam and Tamil are related in their roots❤️
