He had pockets of following all over the world, but essentially he's one of the greatest and best-kept vocal and musical secrets ever. He's been a true legend here since the 60s, and it's only now, via TH-cam, and being in his mid-70s and in poor health, he's getting a little of the global recognition he so richly deserves....

One thing to understand about John is that he just loves to sing. I worked on a tour making a doco of the journey. I also worked with him at the Nine network on shows like Hey Hey its Saturday (great time in tv here...) The voice is natural. John was never formally trained. It is also mind-bendingly loud, hence the nickname "Whispering Jack". In the TV studio we had to put additional "pads" into his mic to stop him from overloading the gain chain... His voice is huge! But he has an ear for the mix....balance... hence the mic technique.. John and his long time backup singers (whom he loves!) would warm up before gigs back stage, in a dressing room , or a corridor, or wherever, and sing Amazing Grace,... acapella... It was just the most insane explosion of vocal harmony and love for the art of the voice,... and anyone nearby, crew, press, techos, "VIP"s, door dudes, minders, promoters... would just be mesmerised and shattered by the shear joy that these awesome artists shared. There were many tears and such love in that space....
It got worse. At the end of a gig we would all retire to whatever hotel we were staying at... A few beers later, and maybe there was a piano... and then these guys would just start vocal jamming on classic blues and folk tunes in the bar. They just loved to sing! Even after a huge gig. To be there was an insanely lucky privilege. I witnessed that perfect celebration of an art and its purity, ...its reach into the hearts of all present. Fuck it was fun.....
...and John is a great guy! ...Real, no airs or graces...would bot a smoke off you, tell jokes, just happy among friends and to be singing his heart out. Unbelievable experience...
In this age of managed everything and calculated success, where big data sequencers, and computer algorithms determine what you hear, John Farnham and his mates are a reminder of a time when music was still about live creativity, not calculation.
Secondly you mentioned the backup singers.... these guys had been with him for 20 plus years. Each in their own right incredible artists. Lisa, Vanetta, Lindsay et al... All of them, like John, had one common element. they just loved to sing..... so much joy!!
Thirdly,......what a song! What an anthem for all of youth? Especially now! Should be subtitled in Ukrainian and broadcast/shared far and wide…
I'd like to see the likes of AOC, Bernie and other Dems use this as an intro to a campaign speech, a call to arms for the young and disheartened of America. It doesnt matter that it's an Australian song, it is an anthem for all that calls on everyone to rise above the divisions and re unite a country, in a positive way, heading into the most imortant election that I can imagine. YOU'RE The Voice! Make noise and make it real! DONT LIVE IN SILENCE, DONT LIVE IN FEAR. Take our song and make it yours. We have always been your allies, your friends. These ideas have never mattered more...
So thx for your reaction, and pls investigate this artists work further. I think you will enjoy! Regards and respect from the great southern land...

Off topic -Having said all that, it's still his best performance of Help available. And though Steve Williams is an outstanding musician, Mark Denison's interpretation of the sax solo is far superior.

@@AndreaSilvestro The toss into the air and catch is easy to miss. Most do, and the camera angle from behind at that moment makes it harder to spot. John is a true gentleman and consummate entertainer, who performs for the audience, not to them; he not only engages the audience, he also gives his musicians and back up singer individual credit. You definitely need to react to Amazing Grace, where he introduces Vanetta Fields and Lindsay Field(long term back up singers); Vanetta's voice is so angelic, but the combined voices are supreme ethereal.

You'll probably have lots of titles suggested to you. He has also sung a few covers - including the Beatles'. ' Help ", a different and slower arrangement, and AC!/DC Long way to the Top. John is the greatest and most versatile male vocalist of all time. This would have to be his biggest song of all, but all John’s music is epic. This and many more of John’s songs have a wonderful, positive and inspiring message that is being conveyed like only John can do. John can and has sung in most genres and is an all round great performer and is amazing live. And then there’s John’s epic mic and mic stand tricks, like in this where he throws the mic stand meters into the air and catches it while still performing, who else does that? Keep the farnsey music coming.

Like Freddy Mercury, John absolutely loves his fans, the crowd and relishes being an entertainer to the masses.
If the crowd isn't happy then he isn't happy.
John recorded a song and sent it to them for permission, they loved it and were blown away by his vocals and added their own parts to it before sending it back and even tried to seriously ask him to join in 2003 as fill in for Freddy.
He turned them down sadly. But he released the song he recorded.
Decades later John and Brian stood on the same stage in 2020 for Fire Fight Australia and got to sing and perform together.
John has many BIG fans in legendary names around the globe. His name better known amongst the Musicians than the general public.

The performance is spine tingling ...goosebumps all the way
This one has a bit of him talking and interacting with the audience before hand. So an opportunity to see his personality 😊

Although John is not Scottish, it was at his insistence that bagpipes be used in the song; l have watched different concerts where they have used a keytar in place of the bagpipes, but it doesn't give the same atmosphere. I have always loved the bagpipes since a young lad, watching the local Scots Drum and Pipe march passed the front of our house; the sound of the pipes stirs the heart of a true Scotsman, I may not be full Scot but it tugs at my heart everytime I hear them.

John was influenced by AC/DC’s It’s A Long Way To The Top because that song has a bagpipe solo .
John wanted the song to be more epic than the songwriters demo which has a normal guitar solo

When The War Is Over is also an epic song of his. To go further Burn For You or Touch Of Paradise if you want sweet. If you want more rock like this got so much: That's Freedom, Two Strong Hearts, Playing To Win, Age Of Reason, Pressure Down, Long Way To The Top. Just get his whole discography. There is a reason he is called The Voice because he is.

This concert was 1 1/2 hrs. long. He gets better. The orchestra give him an ovation with their instruments. Pity Youyube has split it up. I used to watch/listen to in whole. Believe me gets better. See his version of the Beatle's "Help". after an hour of singing. His greatest performance. Sadly he's had throat and mouth cancer, 26 surgeons working for 12 hours to help our beloved " Voice". We may never hear those pipes again but he's made his mark and is riding his horses on his farm and healing. He comes from my town and I know he's a fun, gentleman and a good generous guy.

If you listen to and understand the lyrics, it's an important song for the whole world. At the time the Vietnam War was still happening. He is saying if the people unite and and speak out, they can change anything. It's people power - "You're the voice, try and understand it, make a noise and make it clear". If you know anything about the history of Scotland and the use of the pipes, you will understand how much power the piper adds to the song (athough, the pipes might resonate with you anyway) 🙂 John has a vocal range of A2 to G5. He can sing anything.

Wish people would stop recommending this version of Angels. In 2024, to people who aren't boomers, middle-aged men joking about viagra and making hubba-hubba sounds to the woman they're working with is not "larrikinism". I love John, and I understand that things used to be different - I certainly don't hold any of this stuff against him - but it's pretty cringy to watch, and probably not the best way to get a young woman to admire him. There is a perfectly good version of Angels without all of that stuff: th-cam.com/video/egjRlSAtV-w/w-d-xo.html
