Thanks for sharing your experiences. Hot spots and numb feet is a real big issue for me when doing long rides in mtb shoes. I'm happy to know that I'm not the only one. Thanks again.
I think you hit on the key issue - walking in a safe manner. It would be wise to make a road shoe that took advantage of the larger cleats but added the necessary walking parts. While I love my road bike, I abhor the idiotic idea that we all have to be professionals or wannabes with footgear unsafe for walking so I chose a mountain bike shoe. On the bicycle paths, or in the downtown core, many people have slipped (some falling) while wearing road shoes.
Congrats on the Sanic partnership. I’m not seeing that they have a presence in Vietnam, so maybe you could be a dealer/distributor for them after your move. I prefer MTB shoes myself, even cleat-less, on flat pedals (necessary in the stop-and-go traffic where I ride). The additional stiffness is nice, while still be able to walk around like you said.
Thanks Eli! That could be an interesting move forward :) MTB shoes / pedals definitely seem the way to go in Vietnam with all the stop & go and dirt roads.
Interestingly this video released at the same time I cleaned up my road pedals / cleats / parts and shoes. Switched to MTB shoes for my commute 3 yrs ago, able to walk easily, even for a short distance is the major reason.
What a great review, I've watched similar topics, and your the only one mentioned this so called "hotspots", that gives me better idea since ive been into long rides. Bdw im new to clip less pedals and you've given me much explanation than other vids i saw. Thank you
Great news. And being a company who’s products you’ve used and enjoyed for a while now it makes it even better. And yes I prefer MTB pedals massively. I do still have some road shoes which I could use indoors. But outdoors the SPDs are great. And I don’t even need them to be super locked in. I use the multi-release cleats. They’re secure enough so they keep my feet comfortably in the same position for a long ride and not sliding around, but in an unforeseen situation I can get my foot out easier. Perfect for leisure riding.
Thanks for the great info. i really appreciate how you describe everything and how down to earth you and your wife are. Her walking videos are pretty and relaxing to watch.
Thanks, I think hotspots are you either get them or you don't. I've always had issues with the stiffer road shoes than the slightly more flexible offroad ones, maybe they just allow my feet to move a little more to minimise the pressure :) [edit: for SPD power with the Assioma's --> xpedo M-Force body swap]
Thanks so much for this. Was really relieved to hear that MTB shoes are good enough for novice/casual cyclists like me. Plus, the MTB shoes are a whole lot cheaper, and seeing that I'm just starting out, I'd prefer to not splurge on the road shoes just yet.
I used the original Look pedal system in the mid 80s for road bikes but for the past 30 years I use Shimano mountain SPD pedals and cleats on MTB shoes on all my bikes including road bikes. I don't want to deal with different pedal systems and shoes. If you use road shoes with exposed cleats you can put cleat covers on them when walking which protects the cleat and makes walking easier.
Late last year I bought a pair of Garneau shoes that are much lighter than my MB shoes. They incorporate an airflow cooling system, so I haven't used them yet -- it snowed, quite heavily, today. They take both MB and RB cleats, and with MB cleats they weigh 599 gm for the pair, as against my MB shoes which weigh 893 gm with cleats. I have to be careful with spending, so I can assure you that the Garneau shows were a really good buy. They were under CDN$100.
Congrats on the partnership Cruise. I bought some cycling jerseys from santic after first seeing your recommendations in the past. Happy for you and I hope you continue expanding
Omedetoo for your sponsor. Over a year ago I switch over from SPD to Austrian magnetic pedals - Magped. I have them on 2 of my 3 bikes. Works for me great from touring but also for century rides.
I've been using Look ROAD pedals now for years but still don't feel comfortable with the unclipping process. Questions are: 1. How much easier is it to unclip? 2. Since the retention of the shoe is done magnetically, did you have any issues when pulling hard on the saddles, i.e. the shoe getting detached. 3. Are they easier to walk with than the Look road pedals?
I really prefer mtb/gravel shoes. You can find a very lighter ones with a good performance as shimano gravel model. Mtb shoes are great when exit or return home due to high city traffic. Also using stairs or walk with more confidence when I stop for a rest. I recommend mtb shoes. Thank you for you great videos.
For me I use XC race shoe on both. One shoe for all disciplines of riding. Simply because and as you have stated it is easier to walk as you had also said far more cost effective. Great vid in dissecting both the pros and con's. I use to run Speedplays back in the 90's and early 2000's. I had both their Road peddles and used their Frogs for XC riding. They had tom be the best peddles I had ever used off road but impossible to walk in. I had to jump back in and edit and say great kit design and I am in as soon as you folks have it all finalized. Keep us posted thanks!
I like the spd pedals( mountain bike) because you can get shoes that look like shoes and the don’t make you walk funny. Good points Also I have worn out road cleats so often. I never wear out my spd cleats

Congratulations on the new sponsorship. Great video! I never really thought about using my MTB shoes for Road riding. I am a big fan of the Speedway Frog pedals.Ride safe!
There are two different types of Shimano MTB cleats, one model releases in an upwards way too, so the rider is less able to rely on pulling up the pedal... but easier to use around town... There are also cleat covers for walking in road bike cleats easier... sometimes called Cafe covers so when the roadies stop for coffee... I prefer MTB shoes because you can walk around in them... I once got two flat tyres at once, and had to walk the bike home the last 5 km's... wore down a pair of road cleats... I also once walked home in bare feet for about 3 km's to avoid wearing down a set of road cleats and the shoes... ended up with terrible blisters and such... MTB shoes everytime, and as they often look like 'normal' shoes (trainers or skate shoes), you can wear them off the bike too, without looking too stupid at work or in the shops, yet still have the cleats. My town bike has the dual pedals - flats on one side, cleats on the other... Road and MTB bike have the eggbeater style pedals.
I used to walk barefoot to the bottom of my apartment and then put my road shoes on as I started my ride. That was not fun.. Walking home after a flat would be pretty bad too :/
I use the same mtb shoes and cleats both for mtb and road bike because it's walkable. i think unless you're into competitive cycling, the advantages of road bike shoes does not matter much.
Hey, Two Wheel. You’re really good at what you do. I envy your expertise. Question for you. I ordered Shimano MT3 cycling shoes for my road bike. The guy at the bike shop when I told him this made a big deal how I ordered mountain bike shoes when I have a road bike. But it’s not a big deal is it? It’s not written in stone that I must have road shoes on a road bike. I like the fact that I could walk around easier in the two cleat shoe because of the extra padding. No big deal, right? Thanks bud you’re the best
Thanks for the video I agree fully I run spd on both my road bikes and my gravel bike , unless your road racing there is no real advantage to road shoes pedals
No problem - it's just the policies inflicted by the reseller/Amazon and I guess Santic has little control over that. Mind you: their Santic official store on Aliexpress does ship to the Benelux so you might want to add that link to your description 👍
I am dealing with hotspots and narrow Euro road shoes killing my feet after using MTB shoes for years. I switched because I am doing a 600+ mile touring ride and wanted a better shoe for that ride. Can I get a Newer stiffer MTB shoe that will work for touring without hotspots?
Now there are many gravel/Mtb in Wide sizing, Shimano and Lake have them. I used to get hotspot in the first year of using Spd shoes but less now. One trick is to pull up on upstroke to release the pressure underneath your foot.
I use Shimano MTB cleats on my Nashbar sandals that I use in the arch location to reduce foot numbness at the ball of my feet.....I’m looking for options of putting a power meter on my recumbent trike...but having trouble finding power pedals that work with the MTB Shimano cleats....may have to use a power crank arm system....any suggestions?
Two Wheel Cruise how about using Stages power meter that’s built into the left crank arm, that way I can use my Shimano SPD pedals....no familiar with these power meters...any thoughts on them?
Dont worry, all my bikes r breakless track bikes and all i run is spds. If ur one of those weirdos who run loose tension on spds u do run the risk of unclipping, but the tightest setting keeps my feet secure an i personally never unintentionally unclip. If ur worried about shimano spds, u can run looks version of spd. You can get look spds tight to the point of basically being fixed to the pedal. Good luck, have fun.
You can set the tension on both road and mtn cleats. So, this shouldn't be a difference in pulling up. And actually, mtb cleats have more float that road bike cleats. Meaning they can be turned to greater degree before they disengage from the pedal. So, while road bikers constantly talk about the "feeling" of security from road cleats, mtb cleats are actually more secure.
Saw your video on the Santic MTB shoes from July 2019. How is it holding up? I ordered one and will be using it for my daily commute and maybe weekend rides.
@@TwoWheelCruise Awesome man! I'm really excited to get mine and give it a go. I've been biking since I was in grade school and until now - to school and now going to work. This will be my first cleats shoe.
I currently use hiking boots, good grip but yeah they lack being in a fixed position :) I'm still not sold on cycling shoes, do they have any health benefits such as reducing tendon injury?
I would think using cycling shoes with a proper bike fit would make sure your legs are always in the proper position for recovery and injury prevention.
After a few years racing road and then switching more of my riding to a less "everything is about speed" mentality I moved all my bikes over to SPD pedals. I find when riding in Japan there are many moments where I want to hop off the bike for a quick sec to see a temple up some steps or through a gravel entrance that would basically end up gnaring up any road cleats, or if Speedplays would feel very unbalanced. In the grand scheme of efficiencies you really loose next to nothing unless you are going for the KoM or something. Bonus as you walk into a store here and are not turning heads cuz you sound like a horse just clogged in 😄
since weight is a concern, what is the typical weight difference between the two styles? What do you consider a long ride that would justify road shoes vs mtb? I am leaning towards mtb for roadbiking and charity rides.
Im in Belizean im trying to fine a road bike shoes for my dad who has been riding for about 45 years but all im finding r shoes that has 4 holes with 3 holes around the 4 holes so im confused dont want to get the wrong 1
Hi I am begginer and considering to buy mtb shoes for my road bike but I do have a question , you mentioned about hot spots on long rides and I want to know how long is long ride for you ?
1: MTB shoe is better because that blue is NICE 2: For commuting, MTB definitely. More walkable, more durable, more options for "real shoes that take cleats" like DZR or Giro Rumble that you don't have to change out of at your destination. Those custom kit discounts!!! I might have to work on one...
I use santic road shoes(nylon). They are excellent!! But as I grow stronger it flex quite a lot. Do you recommend the carbon one? I dont want to change to other brand cus they just fit me so well
Sooo... I got a pair of shimano mtb shoes today. The cleats seam to be scraping the ground when I walk on asphalt or cement, not on tile. Is this normal or did I install the cleats wrong?
Normal, the recess basically puts them level with tread so unless the surface is completely hard and totally flat (like tile) they will scrape a little.
I used spd mtb shoes on my road bike for years but decided to go for proper road shoes because of single problem which wasnt mentioned here. They CREAK as hell. Is not the bolts is not the pedals but seemingly is the place between shoe sole and the cleat itself. I tried to put grease there but after some rides creaks appear again. Maybe is just my shoe problem but from now only road full carbon shoes.
@@TwoWheelCruise I put grease betheen the cleat and the sole as well as other side of the sole and metal plate which has threads. I saw others do some thin layer rubber to prevent this creak. My sole is not the stiffest one, but is not too flexy either to have hotspots during 3-6 hour ride. But it look a bit plasticky thats why maybe the creak. With max stiffness sole this probably gone...
I barely can walk with my santic mtb shoes LoL. It's stiff which is good for power transfer yet it's the sole material is too hard and slippery, they should use skateboard wheel nylon pvc material which more rubbery than glassy.
I'm new to bikes and thought they'd be a good way to get exercise and help me lose some weight...soooo are normal shoes not good enough? Do you need bike shoes?
Mtb shoes, no question. You can get carbon soled mtb shoes that are every bit as hard as road shoes, these days. There's no reason to be riding 3 cleats anymore, unless you're in the Roubaix, and even then not really
mtb shoes by far. You need bird feet for road. If you have small feet or normal feet and can ride for long sprints without dismounting then road shoes are cool. But when you are like me flat wide feet MTB all the way.BTW I have four santic sets of shoes and I love them.
@@potatetomato Been using them for close to a year now. It's great! bang for your buck! I bought them for about $50 at the time, it was on sale. Only thing I don't like about it is its a bit slippery when walking tiled flooring, I feel like I'm on skates. Other than that, its comfy and my rides are a lot more enjoyable with these on. I'm probably not going back to flat pedals. Edit: Would have been a lot better if there are drain holes for when riding in the rainy season.

In the grand scheme of efficiencies you really loose next to nothing unless you are going for the KoM or something.
Bonus as you walk into a store here and are not turning heads cuz you sound like a horse just clogged in 😄
being a white guy in spandex alone already turns enough heads in Japan 😅
@@TwoWheelCruise fair 😋
Those are eyes already looking your way. Now you got eyes that were looking elsewhere ready to gawk at you too. 😅
since weight is a concern, what is the typical weight difference between the two styles? What do you consider a long ride that would justify road shoes vs mtb? I am leaning towards mtb for roadbiking and charity rides.
Im in Belizean im trying to fine a road bike shoes for my dad who has been riding for about 45 years but all im finding r shoes that has 4 holes with 3 holes around the 4 holes so im confused dont want to get the wrong 1
Thanks for the video
Hi I am begginer and considering to buy mtb shoes for my road bike but I do have a question , you mentioned about hot spots on long rides and I want to know how long is long ride for you ?
Can i received Olds cleats shoes?😫😥😭 never try One of that Wishing to have one
1: MTB shoe is better because that blue is NICE
2: For commuting, MTB definitely. More walkable, more durable, more options for "real shoes that take cleats" like DZR or Giro Rumble that you don't have to change out of at your destination.
Those custom kit discounts!!! I might have to work on one...
Thuong was really jealous of the blue shoes :)
Are any santic road shoes type, use same size chart? My sneaker use insole 28cm, what size do i choose?
I like the red design. It should help you to cycle under the radar in Vietnam. :D
Almost put a big yellow star on the back :)
I use santic road shoes(nylon). They are excellent!! But as I grow stronger it flex quite a lot.
Do you recommend the carbon one? I dont want to change to other brand cus they just fit me so well
The carbon sole models will definitely be more stiff :)
Puerto Rican flag🇵🇷😍💪🏻
@@chris1275cc ah! Good to know. Thank you for the info!
Great video and excellent Brand 👍🏻👌🏻🚴🏻♂️
Thanks! 👍
I wear Santic Jersey but had no clue they made MTB shoes like the red one.
They've actually got a bunch of variety, but just not always available anywhere. At the big bike shows their walls are lined up with shoes haha
I use both, depends of where you go and how you use them.
same
From which distance (in Km) do you talk about long distances?
I used spd mtb shoes on my road bike for years but decided to go for proper road shoes because of single problem which wasnt mentioned here. They CREAK as hell. Is not the bolts is not the pedals but seemingly is the place between shoe sole and the cleat itself. I tried to put grease there but after some rides creaks appear again. Maybe is just my shoe problem but from now only road full carbon shoes.
I've never had this problem, but they can be loud if the metal cleat touches rocks on the ground while walking
Either way those look clean
haha i catch it when he said it always comes down with the size... 😂😂😂
5:50 Define longer rides please
I barely can walk with my santic mtb shoes LoL. It's stiff which is good for power transfer yet it's the sole material is too hard and slippery, they should use skateboard wheel nylon pvc material which more rubbery than glassy.
They are definitely stiff. I'll let them know your feedback for the grip.
is roadbike cleats shoes compatible with mtb cleats?
no
Congrats on the sponsor even if it's a Chinese brand.
Thanks! They're a solid brand with good quality stuff :)
I'm new to bikes and thought they'd be a good way to get exercise and help me lose some weight...soooo are normal shoes not good enough? Do you need bike shoes?
Normal shoes are fine for most general riding.
Thank you.
Definitely MB shoes
We all know you like it dirty
You use MTB shoe on a roadbike?
Mtb shoes, no question. You can get carbon soled mtb shoes that are every bit as hard as road shoes, these days. There's no reason to be riding 3 cleats anymore, unless you're in the Roubaix, and even then not really
Exactly :)
My thought's exactly
Kinda funny how those MTB shoes look more like a typical road shoe and the road shoes look more mountain bikey (cos of the Velcro and the colour)
Love their shoes but no size bigger than 11 US.
Most Asian brands don't make them bigger than that.. Fortunately I am exactly a size 11..
Thank you
mtb shoes by far. You need bird feet for road. If you have small feet or normal feet and can ride for long sprints without dismounting then road shoes are cool. But when you are like me flat wide feet MTB all the way.BTW I have four santic sets of shoes and I love them.
Oh wow, that's a big collection
The best its on li youuu 🤟😷
Nice shoes how do I get them ?
Depends on where you live, but they should be available on most major Amazon sites (US, UK, Japan, etc)
Regrettably, the Santic shoes don't appear to come in large sizes. My MTB shoes are Sidi Mega Dominators, EU size 50.
Darn, sorry to hear that 😢
I use MTB pedals and shoes for everything. I have a few KOMs with them.
I hate to stand out and the sound of the road cleats makes me cringe.
Nice!
I ordered that black Santic MTB shoes in the beginning of May, Unfortunately it's stuck in China because of the virus.
Sorry to hear that, hopefully international shipping gets back to normal soon
@@TwoWheelCruise Just got an update today. It's already in the sorting hub, should be delivered in a few days. Thanks!
How do you like them?
@@potatetomato Been using them for close to a year now. It's great! bang for your buck! I bought them for about $50 at the time, it was on sale. Only thing I don't like about it is its a bit slippery when walking tiled flooring, I feel like I'm on skates. Other than that, its comfy and my rides are a lot more enjoyable with these on. I'm probably not going back to flat pedals.
Edit: Would have been a lot better if there are drain holes for when riding in the rainy season.
@@bsimz008 i see!! Thanks a lot for the reply! I really appreciate it!!
the Red works!!!
