As for Shimano, my 2 cents on it being someone with very wide feet, I find Shimano standard shoe sizes still far too narrow. With their "wide" option being still just a hair too long but with correct width. As in wearing a size 45 wide it is a bit too long but correct width, yet a size 44.5 is correct length but not wide enough. The solution for me has been custom molding insoles Shimano sells that you heat to shape. Basically going the correct shoe width and then using the insole too correctly adjust the fit. Historically the only shoes I've ever been able to find that 100% fit my feet correctly have been Bont shoes that allow you to mold the entire base of the shoe to your foot. Just my two cents on the matter with currently Shimano CX7 shoes.

I really like the Lake fit process. I haven't rode with them yet, but I measured my foot on a piece of paper, plugged it into Lake's calculator, and it told me what size and last to look for. I got the MX238 wide, and wearing them around the house, they fit like a glove! Dual Boa, lots of tread, and hopefully work well on the bike. Haven't put them through the paces yet, as I'm still finishing my bike build. Thanks for the video!
I have the Giro VR90, some Uber reflective Giro Empires, Giro Cylinder, Giro Rumble,and a couple pairs of the new Shimano RX8 gravel shoes. I wear a 12D men’s dress shoe, and found Giro Empire and VR90 fit around a 46.5, Rumble in 46, Cylinder in 46 which start snug, but seemed to stretch out after 500 miles, and the Shimano RX8 ran small so a 47 fits well with roomy toes, but a low toe box, but crazy stiff and not too hot. Shimanos winter shoes and boots though run big and I sized to a 46 and still have room for wool socks. I know its a lot of shoes but I like to rotate, depending on type of ride, bike, kit, and weather.
I just have to applaud the extra effort you went through to film close up shots when the shoes were new and making the video after putting them through some good use!
for wide feet Lake is the way to go. Three different lasts and all with wide options. True wide, not just more material in the upper as Shimano does but with a wider footbed. Works for me. Sorry they didn't send you a sample. Their loss, but the shoes are the real deal. They have come a long way since they started in early 90's or so. Models with lace and with boa. That's all
I finally broke down and bought some new shoes after years on my last pair and on your recommendation from a video a little while back I got the Privateer lace and they are amazing. By far the most comfortable shoe I've worn cycling. Thanks for spreading the good word!
I bought Giro Berm Men's Cycling Shoes. Dual velcro straps, 460 grams for size 43. Fits like a glove. Comfortable walking (although I've only walked on them for a few feet here and there). Only 75 dollars!
Giro Republic R knit has been my go to for a summertime shoe....damn comfortable, stays cool 😎 and I dig the laces and knit look + the blue goes well with the navy Chris King bits..... There’s my 2 cents. Thanks for the reviews! 👍
I have the 3 pairs of VR90s and they are almost perfect. For me, the more perfecter shoe is the Pearl X-Project Pro. They are stupid expensive, but they have lasted almost 4 years. I have done all of my ultra-endurance gravel and bike packing races in them. They are super easy to walk in. They are not as light as the VR90s but they are also much easier to get on and off, as well as adjust as your feet swell after many hours on the bike.
I have been wearing the Shimano RX8 for the last 3 months and they are terrific. Stiff, light and relatively easy to walk in. Also... silver camo. Boom! And if you look around, you can find them for under $200 at a few Portland bike shops.
First time seeing this but I've been a giant fan of the Privateer for a couple of years now. It is by far my favorite cycling shoe of all time. The only thing I've been disappointed by is that it took me so long to discover this shoe. I have two pairs in black but I'm thinking of getting that deep green color too. I loved the video , very helpful, quite agree with the esthetics over all except the shoe laces . Shoes that are mtb or maybe gravel look amazing with Boa, i would use laces mainly for commuting shoes where they will shine . The last shoe you have showed us ( The Privateer ) was click in my heart for its shape but i would change the laces with Salomon quick laces probably immediately . Thanks for the video Dustin. Can confirm Shimano for wide feet. Fizik X5 were too narrow to me. I have the SH-XC7 in the wide variant and they‘re very roomy. I might have even gotten away with the regular, not wide. Dual Boa, Michelin rubber sole on carbon, stiffness 9. I did bikepacking, regular tarmac/road biking and gravel/singletrail riding and they were almost perfect. Only downside: when I had to push my packed bike up a very steep forest incline I had to significantly tighten the top Boa to not slip out on my heel. I‘d give them a 8/10.
As usual, hilarious. I wrote a couple of weeks ago about my 15 year old Specialized, still solid, but they are showing a bit of wear, not the best for hike bike unless on nice supple loamy soil. Dustin you got me thinking about shoes. I kinda like those sexy Specialized... just something about them. Thanks for the fantastic videos.
The giro priveteers are my first pair of mountain bike shoes and my first shoe using spd cleats and The conversion was very comfortably! It’s cool to know you pick the shoes I ride with as your top pick! 👍🏽👍🏽
I love Giro shoes. They're the only ones that don't make my feet go numb on long rides. I have the Giro Gauge -- another lace up -- very reasonably priced and a really solid shoe. Sidis are nice too, but pricey.
Finally busted beyond use my old Sidi MTBs and apparently just in time for these videos... Don’t know if the breakdown videos had anything to do with them dying but that’s neither here nor there. Opted for a pair of the Giro Rincon at $150 and loving them so far. Good price point and similar to the Sector... Wasn’t sure if you were able to get your feet on a pair. Everyone’s feet are different - pick the shoe that fits your foot, most importantly.
I am using Shimano XC5, good Michelin rubber sole very grippy, 1 boa + 1 velcro, fair price. Matt black or electric blue. Not crazy stiff so they are on the comfy side
I bought the Giro Privateer on your suggestion, from the Vlog with Ron and I just put them through their paces yesterday on a local gravel track and they performed awesomely 👍🏽
Fizik Terra X5s hit the sweet spot for me. I love em. I'm a 12 in Nike and they run true to size. Like you mentioned about the Fiziks in your vid, they are a bit narrow but I have a narrow foot so they work.
@@palmquac I like them a lot. I use them for gravel and some road rides when I use my gravel bike on pavement. Awesome shoes. Check out the terra x4. My buddy has those. Essentially same shoe but different closure system. Much lighter and specifically made for gravel.

3:24 cement is a powder-like material binder most commonly used as an ingredient to make a different structural material called concrete. Cement would be a terrible walking surface. Concrete would be a good walking surface but potentially slippery with spikes on your shoes.
Said it once, but I love the Privateers. A simple, comfortable and affordable shoe with that classic look. Also have the road version of the Fiziks and fell in love with their weird look. The upper is quite sensitive though.
Totally agree on Shimano being best for wide feet, and also laces for aesthetics. Check out the Shimano XC5's, very comfortable, light, not too expensive...... and with laces. Although, I think the new model might have gone to boa.

Dustin Case you are cool and well-spoken however I have to DeKline the tips since for my fat feet the Fizik R5 Powerstrap was far roomier and more comfortable than any roadshoe from Shimano and It's hard to imagine that the reverse would be the case for mountain bike / gravel shoes. I guess I'll have to go in and try them?
Liked your review, thanks. I have worn out two generations of Giro Privateers, the 2nd much better than the first. I like the tactile connection of nylon vs. carbon. I have Grio VR 90's as well, and although I can definitely feels the better power transfer, they are less ventilated, comfortabl and a bit stiff for walking over technical bits. I am NOT a fan of laces, even if you think they look cool, so silly. But, I don't think they make Privateers with Velcro or their Boa/lower Velcro strap combo's. I currently am running Giro Cylinders, fit decent but not the upper support of Privateers with Velcro and ratchet strap. I use Crank Bros. Eggbeaters and they depend on the sole for engagement/connection, so wore them out beyond contact sleeves. Giro Rincon may be the closest current version of the Privateers.
Had the same experience with the Fizik's. Liked the bizarre look of them, but the fit was strange and I got hot spots and rubbing in weird places. Sent them back. Giro has always done me well. I have a pair of the old Rapha cross shoes, when they were made by Giro, and they just keep going. Super comfy.
Thanks for doing this, man. I'm sure most of us in the comments have come across those shoes and wondered about em. Anyone here mess with Northwave Shoes? They are often triple f approved (fat foot friendly). I've heard that about Shimano too! I have the Northwave Outcross 2 plus and really dig em. For reference I'm a big boy at 6'3" 270lbs.
Greatly appreciate you doing this review! As a roadie convert to gravel, I have been using my road shoes for a couple of years, but... I have a gravel event coming with some water crossings and hike-a-bike sections, so need to get on the gravel shoe train. I'm thinking the Giro Sectors are in my future...

Great video. Regarding your point about Shimano shoes, my experience with them has been a real mixed bag. My Shimano MTB shoes are beyond comfortable and hold up to all-day riding - absolutely love 'em. My Shimano road shoes are the cruelest of cruel shoes. The toebox is a torture chamber after about two to three hours. I'm probably going back to Specialized when it comes to road shoes.
DKlein... what were each of the shoes like when riding? Require any break-in period, slipped on rocks and roots when you hike-a-bike, too stiff while not pedaling and when hiking, offer good breathability? Think this provides an awesome start, but you can provide a deeper review of each. Perhaps, that's in your plans and I'm jumping ahead. Thanks, enjoy your rides and personality on and off the bike!
This was great. Thanks Justin! I got the Privateer Lace and, yes, the only gripe is that they're slow to take on and off. If I'd consider any other shoe I'd be interested in trying out the Specialized Recon's actually.
I actually do have a set of Shimano ME3's and wide feet with narrow ankles, and I can vouch, they're good wide-foot shoes. That being said, I wanna try those Giro Privateer Lace joints you featured for my next shoe. I agree with you on the look, and honestly I do prefer laces to the Shimano ratchet system.
Your size in centimetres would be great to know too, as well as information on the arches of the shoes (I need a separate insole for Fizik and FiveTen, but Specialized and Giro have a bit higher [and for me more comfy] arch I find and the included insole is fine).
I do agree with the last part. I have a wide foot and Shimano works well for me , I have the Shimano ME5 which is not a gravel specific shoe but is more like an XC model and it works well for my wide feet :D
nice review, it's so hard to find a good cycling shoe... I feel like there is a gap in the market fo something that looks good & moderately priced & performs well (enough). mtb shoes go from puffy/super thick sole the jumps straight to super sleek super tech. is there something I am missing???

I commute on Shimano CT-5 shoes they are good on the bike and excellent of the bike, I've been wearing them every single day for almost 2 years now, I even did a 4 day bikepacking trip with some nature hiking in the middle of it and all I brought were the Shimano shoes. I just recently got a second pair of those which are still brand new in the box, since the whole virus thing happened i've been working from home and doing very little riding, but once the situation is better i'll start wearing them. I also have some eye watering expensive Fizik Infiinito X1 shoes and those actually make my feet hurt on longer rides. My feet loves Shimano shoes.
I’ve got a wide foot and the only brands I know of that make a “certified” wide foot cycling shoe is anything labeled as Mega by Sidi and Giro’s HV (high volume) shoes, which the Privateer comes in. Never tried a Shimano shoe but also never heard of them making a wide foot specific shoe.
I have a pair of Privateer Lace shoes myself als love them. Also have a pair of Shimano RX-8 shoes but they feel narrower than the Privateer shoes. I also have a pair of VR90 HV shoes which I got when the normal VR90 where to narrow for me. The VR90 HV appears to be build on the same sole as the normal VR90 but with a little more volume in the upper part. Having slightly wider feet I love the Privateer Lace shoes the best, then the VR90 HV’s and lastly the Shimano RX-8’s. Perhaps I will give the wide version of the RX-8 shoes a try next.
Lake are great for wide feet the toe box is nice and wide, I have the cx237 with speed play zeros for my road bike and giro republic R knit with crankbros candy pedals on my gravel bike

Shoes r personal...i have EEEE so shimano or sidi ...find shimano fit and good performance...good point at the end...fyi have had shimano wide cross shoes fit like slippers ...new wide model only comes in black but 100% recommend

Dustin, could use some advice. I ordered a pair of privateers in a 46 and it feels big compared to my perfect fit 45.5 specialized road shoes. Tried a 45 but it feels too small. The 46 seems like it might work but the toe box feels a lot more generous and roomy than I am used to with my road specific shoe. Is this just a normal thing with spd specific shoes? or do I just need to return and go with a specialized half size option I am used to. Giro's HV - high volume works for those with wider feet. I have an older pair of Privateers in the HV - love 'em.

The Sector really is a great shoe with plenty of plush material lining the upper and a snug, but not tight fit for narrow/low-volume feet.

I ride Shimano XC5s, which are quite nice. They are better for wider feet. Lace up like the Privateers, with good grippy sole and quite affordable.
I recommend Bont Riot MTB+ if you need something with a wider toe box area.
I'm a wide shoe guy. I've had good luck with Shimano wides, Lake wides and Sidi Mega's. My favorite for fit has been the Shimano

Dustin Case you are cool and well-spoken however I have to DeKline the tips since for my fat feet the Fizik R5 Powerstrap was far roomier and more comfortable than any roadshoe from Shimano and It's hard to imagine that the reverse would be the case for mountain bike / gravel shoes. I guess I'll have to go in and try them?
I'm interested in the Suplest flat pedal shoes, it's the only flat pedal shoe that has boa as far as I know. Plus it has no animal leather.

Liked your review, thanks. I have worn out two generations of Giro Privateers, the 2nd much better than the first. I like the tactile connection of nylon vs. carbon. I have Grio VR 90's as well, and although I can definitely feels the better power transfer, they are less ventilated, comfortabl and a bit stiff for walking over technical bits. I am NOT a fan of laces, even if you think they look cool, so silly. But, I don't think they make Privateers with Velcro or their Boa/lower Velcro strap combo's. I currently am running Giro Cylinders, fit decent but not the upper support of Privateers with Velcro and ratchet strap. I use Crank Bros. Eggbeaters and they depend on the sole for engagement/connection, so wore them out beyond contact sleeves. Giro Rincon may be the closest current version of the Privateers.
Had the same experience with the Fizik's. Liked the bizarre look of them, but the fit was strange and I got hot spots and rubbing in weird places. Sent them back. Giro has always done me well. I have a pair of the old Rapha cross shoes, when they were made by Giro, and they just keep going. Super comfy.

Thanks for doing this, man. I'm sure most of us in the comments have come across those shoes and wondered about em. Anyone here mess with Northwave Shoes? They are often triple f approved (fat foot friendly). I've heard that about Shimano too! I have the Northwave Outcross 2 plus and really dig em. For reference I'm a big boy at 6'3" 270lbs.
Greatly appreciate you doing this review! As a roadie convert to gravel, I have been using my road shoes for a couple of years, but... I have a gravel event coming with some water crossings and hike-a-bike sections, so need to get on the gravel shoe train. I'm thinking the Giro Sectors are in my future...

I agree with the Shimano shoes for a wider foot. The only brand SPD shoe that fit my feet.
Hey DK 👍 - Even though neither responded for the rundown, Lake & Shimano both have great shoes for both "regular" & wide feet. Our buddy Francis had a talk w/ BikeFit James on shoe fit & quality.

Great video. Regarding your point about Shimano shoes, my experience with them has been a real mixed bag. My Shimano MTB shoes are beyond comfortable and hold up to all-day riding - absolutely love 'em. My Shimano road shoes are the cruelest of cruel shoes. The toebox is a torture chamber after about two to three hours. I'm probably going back to Specialized when it comes to road shoes.
DKlein... what were each of the shoes like when riding? Require any break-in period, slipped on rocks and roots when you hike-a-bike, too stiff while not pedaling and when hiking, offer good breathability? Think this provides an awesome start, but you can provide a deeper review of each. Perhaps, that's in your plans and I'm jumping ahead. Thanks, enjoy your rides and personality on and off the bike!
This was great. Thanks Justin! I got the Privateer Lace and, yes, the only gripe is that they're slow to take on and off. If I'd consider any other shoe I'd be interested in trying out the Specialized Recon's actually.
I actually do have a set of Shimano ME3's and wide feet with narrow ankles, and I can vouch, they're good wide-foot shoes. That being said, I wanna try those Giro Privateer Lace joints you featured for my next shoe. I agree with you on the look, and honestly I do prefer laces to the Shimano ratchet system.
Your size in centimetres would be great to know too, as well as information on the arches of the shoes (I need a separate insole for Fizik and FiveTen, but Specialized and Giro have a bit higher [and for me more comfy] arch I find and the included insole is fine).

I have a wide foot and Shimano works well for me , I have the Shimano ME5 which is not a gravel specific shoe but is more like an XC model and it works well for my wide feet :D
nice review, it's so hard to find a good cycling shoe... I feel like there is a gap in the market fo something that looks good & moderately priced & performs well (enough). mtb shoes go from puffy/super thick sole the jumps straight to super sleek super tech. is there something I am missing???

Accurate. VR90s are my personal fave also. Thinking the Sectors for more rugged affairs. Same last? Bonus. Sooooo am I hearing you right...EU45 in VR90s means EU45.5 in the Sectors.

I hope you’ve got a pair of fizik terra x4’s in there cos I just bought a pair and the fit and comfort are insanely good. Best shoes I’ve had Road/mountain or otherwise.

I got a pair of the Fizik Vento X3 and the Northwave Rebel, both top notch but as Dustin said: every foot is different.
11:52 when listing negatives of laces, a negative not mentioned is laces can come undo and get caught in the drive train etc.

Really depends on each scenario. All are good options.
I commute on Shimano CT-5 shoes they are good on the bike and excellent of the bike, I've been wearing them every single day for almost 2 years now, I even did a 4 day bikepacking trip with some nature hiking in the middle of it and all I brought were the Shimano shoes. I just recently got a second pair of those which are still brand new in the box, since the whole virus thing happened i've been working from home and doing very little riding, but once the situation is better i'll start wearing them. I also have some eye watering expensive Fizik Infiinito X1 shoes and those actually make my feet hurt on longer rides. My feet loves Shimano shoes.
I have the bont riots and they have wide and crazy wide options and are thermal molded at a great price point

I’ve got a wide foot and the only brands I know of that make a “certified” wide foot cycling shoe is anything labeled as Mega by Sidi and Giro’s HV (high volume) shoes, which the Privateer comes in. Never tried a Shimano shoe but also never heard of them making a wide foot specific shoe.

I have a pair of Privateer Lace shoes myself als love them.
Also have a pair of Shimano RX-8 shoes but they feel narrower than the Privateer shoes.
I also have a pair of VR90 HV shoes which I got when the normal VR90 where to narrow for me.
The VR90 HV appears to be build on the same sole as the normal VR90 but with a little more volume in the upper part.
Having slightly wider feet I love the Privateer Lace shoes the best, then the VR90 HV’s and lastly the Shimano RX-8’s.
Perhaps I will give the wide version of the RX-8 shoes a try next.

Lake are great for wide feet the toe box is nice and wide, I have the cx237 with speed play zeros for my road bike and giro republic R knit with crankbros candy pedals on my gravel bike

Less flex in carbon. But I don’t totally notice it off road. Might be more noticeable one road.

Have you tried the Giro Gauge? They look nice as a causal/riding shoe. I like the black/citrine and it’s got laces.
Dustin, could use some advice. I ordered a pair of privateers in a 46 and it feels big compared to my perfect fit 45.5 specialized road shoes. Tried a 45 but it feels too small. The 46 seems like it might work but the toe box feels a lot more generous and roomy than I am used to with my road specific shoe. Is this just a normal thing with spd specific shoes? or do I just need to return and go with a specialized half size option I am used to. Thanks in advance, I really want to like the shoe after seeing both your vids featuring it
