The GH7 might just be the camera to get me to switch to Lumix completely. Not just because of the new features, and that (worthwhile) ARRI log profile addition, and ProRes RAW, but also because Panasonic has some of the best skin tones I've ever seen. Oh...and the 32-bit internal audio recording!! Holy cow.
And third party support have come a long way, for manual cine lenses, just look at the Sirui Nighwalker lenses @ T1.2 , it's more than enough for lowlight. There's Laowa 20mm wide mft nanomorph and Blazar remus anamorphic lenses.
You are the best of the best on these new cameras. Amazing we have almost all the major Panasonic cameras now running phase detection auto focus. Superb solid line of cameras for everyone. As usual, your video are perfect, great job!! 👍👍👍👍👍

Thank you for your excellent sharing on this new MFT monster MFT is not dead... How insane Lumix bump in so many features into a smaller MFT camera such as the desired 32-bit float audio recording which probably made the Full frame users crying and asking their brands to do it too LOL I'm used to join Lumix MFT in last year and very concerned about the low light performance, but after Shane tested with ISO 10000 (of course with this GH7) but still cannot see the noticeable noise and this make me impressive and will continue stick on the MFT journey

It always helps when you have one of the worlds best models to work with 🥰. I always look at both you & Gerald Undone for any Camera updates. I am still happy with both my GH5 & GH5II. I was keen on the S5IIX but I have invested a lot of money in my PRO MF3 lens collection I don't want to move to the L mount system. I did not like the GH6 enough to upgrade, Now here we are with a much better MF3 Camera.... there will be a lot of older Lumix cameras going cheap (maybe including mine) to be able to upgrade to the LUCKY GH7. We shall see.
I never regret subscribing to your channel, your reviews are always spot on. Everything that I wanted on the successor to the GH6 is present on the GH7 except that the EVF resolution is not improved and I will want S5ii body with the GH6 style LCD screen. It's very interesting that the gh7 has a flash sync port yet is clearly a video camera, and the g9ii which is supposed to be their photo centric camera does not. My guess is thst they MASSIVELY over ordered tooling for the s5ii body moulding so had to make the most of the shape, hence g9ii. The old g9 body was perfect.
Here is hoping the new auto focus options (train etc) will be added to the G9M2, along with the option to switch to 2 channel audio, rather than getting 4 channels with 2 being empty. Seems that the GH7 is pretty much the same camera internally as the G9M2, just with extra peripherals that optimise the GH7 more towards video.
Some things are not important only for videos but also for g9m2 photocentric: cooler, new express SD card, maybe faster& bigger buffer? (eager to see reviews on this too )
LUMIX is unmatched, the specs and value we get at the price point is definitely unmatched. I almost got the GH6 but went for the S5Mk2X instead. This camera looks promising but I want to see what LUMIX has for us in the full-frame section.

ProRes Raw Recording not supported in Resolve, and I wish they used SD cards slots instead of the SDexpress for Slot 1, but overall, a beautiful camera!
I love my G9M2 and sold my GH6 to get it. Not just because of the G9M2 focus, but I just never did like the feel of the Gh6 in hand; no, no GH7 for me.
Hope 32-bit support of the DMW-XLR2 is also backported to the S5 II / S5 II X. On my Rode Wireless Pro, it's just great and gives you far more freedom than the audio support on the S5 II (X). The latter requires a LOT of attention and IMHO is a PITA as you also need to keep an eye on the corrent level if don't want the auto-limiter mess up the audio. Now that Model2 supports all four channels (and two of them coming from the new 3.5 jack), it'd be the perfect companion to the Rode Wireless Pro receiver (which also has a 3.5 output) too. Currently, I use a plain 3.5 wire to feed the receiver's output directly to the camera and, of course, it rules out using the other two channels. So I can't record for example the inner mike's audio on the third channel.
I wonder how long you can record with power delivery via USB-C .... I know there is also new Panasonic dummy battery that allows mains power and USB recording at the same time. I guess with dummy you can record indefinitely :D Impressive camera, although a bit on the expensive side :D, at least in 2nd world countries.
liking the GH7 good job Panasonic this time. But WoW that FX3 test example at 16:22 blows out the rest in comparison, being the cleanest while still can see the grey card and tiles in the dark
The S5IIX has no CFExpress Type B slot, so there's no way it could write to a V90 card. Hopefully it comes to the external SSD capability in the future. Fingers crossed!

Can you charge these new batteries on the GH5 charging adapter? And I was using the Panasonic Image app a lot with the GH5 to be able to monitor my self on my iPhone. Will the Panasonic Image App work with the GH7 together? Waiting for your response, greetings !
These won't charge (from memory) on the GH5 charger as the new chargers are top loaded ones. There's a few third party ones or you can use any of the ones made for the S5/S5II/GH6 etc.

I like how you have the panasonic boxes setted and that they slowly take more and more space thus framing the sony boxes in the corner. If lumix goes on like that they will get far more reputation than sony. And to be real sony cameras have far less value/price ratio and people keep buying them just for their fame. I hate every moment with my a6300 here when I have to shoot 4k and sweat due to it overheating or when I have to stabilize in post. Maybe one day I will be able to buy one of those newer panasonics (s5 and later) so I can have a real camera and that 10bit video. Nice review though. Would like to hear an opinion about the arri log profile!
Thank you for the review but I'm maybe not as enthusiastic as some people here. To resume, this is basically a bigger/heavier G9II with a fan and ProResraw. I really prefer the colors of my GH6 over the G9II, very sad Panasonic used the same color science than the G9II for the GH7. And no, adding saturation doesn't match the G9II to the GH6, I use both cameras and it's not so simple. Even in raw pictures, it's not so easy because the colors and tones are different, the GH6 has really nicer colors in my opinion. I use more my GH6 than my G9II because of colors and the slightly better detail rendering in 5,7K. I also have some issue with my G9II and old lenses like the 45-175mm which has video accuracy issue making the whole image out of focus. Of course the GH6 is much slower, but AF-S works everytime, no accuracy issue. I wonder if the GH7 has solved this issue. Also, since the S5II launch, it seems we can't get any comparison video about image quality/fine details (with crop) between the recent and old Panasonic cameras. Yet, detail rendering is one of the most important thing, the ability to render video frame as close as a raw picture. I will defintely get a GH7 to compare it to my GH5,GH6,G9II,S5,S1 and S5II.

I was disappointed that the GH7 doesn't have bluetooth. And disappointed in the price of $2,000 for the body only. Micro four thirds no longer offers a competitive price. Now even more expensive than the lumix s5iix 😢😮. Your review is above board as always. Disappointment is directed to Panasonic marketing department
Great comprehensive video, Shane! Which system do you like better for easy color grading and podcasting/TH-cam? Sony FX series or Lumix GH7 / S5iix (I'm concerned about the moire with s5iix)??
They all will give you great results now. I never shoot with log inside so all of the out of camera profiles are great on both Sony and Panasonic. I use picture profile 1 on my FX3/FX30 and Natural on the Panasonic gear (like in this video) If you're shooting in regular frame rates the S5II is the way to go and I always find vlog a lot easier to shoot and grade. I think the X will be overkill for long recordings unless you need the other features of that camera for some reason. For tripod and long recording situations anything with active cooling will do the job.
I don’t know what firmware was on these preproduction cameras that was sent out for TH-camrs to test and review because when I finally got my GH7 from B&H the autofocus is horrible and to make sure I wasn’t doing the wrong thing or had the wrong settings I had a video chat with B&H camera specialist and they was having the same result with their camera using the same lens Leica 12-60 so they are contacting Panasonic to see what is going on.
I had what was close to the original firmware. There's a new update for teh GH7, but the AF works really well. Same on the G9II. If you're doing anything with a person in the frame make sure you turn human/body detection on in the menu. Mine performed as good as my G9II (which I purchased).
Do you need a cloudlifter or something similar with the XLR2 if you want to use it with an SM7B? How good are the new pre-amps on this unit? I own the XLR1 and it has terrible pre-amps imo. I still love it for its simplicity though!
You don't always need a cloudlifter or SE Dynamite, but the Shure SM7B always works better with one as it adds a bunch of clean gain without adding noise.
I got a G9II and it's a great camera but I know what you mean. The problem is, no one knows this stuff is coming out. or if it will. The G9II is a great camera and if its not doing the job trade it in. At least in Australia, there's plenty of shops that do trade-ins.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy I'm primarily a video shooter so the internal prores raw and 32-bit float are actually of use to me. The only thing that would stop me from getting it is if the shutter angle is limited to 357 degrees like it is in the G9 II (I need it to go to 359 like in the GH5s). BTW, you are consistently one of my favorite camera reviewers, you've done a great job in the past as well as in this video. Keep up the great work!
If you need a gimbal for some sort of creative stuff go for it, but if you turn on e-stabilization, it's almost not required anymore. Gimbals are good for shots you can't get handheld. If you're just doing walking shots, I wouldn't use one myself.
Looks like a great camera, but... the Sony FX30 costs $600 less and has been out for a year-and-a-half now. Plus it has the advantage for those who want to use it as a B cam to a Sony full frame camera. Don't get me wrong: I love Panasonic cameras, but they always seem like they are released too late to make an impact on the market. Even the EVA1, which is a very nice cinema camera, was trying to play catch up with Sony and Canon cinema cameras. (I guess one can argue the S1H was ahead of the pack, but the lack of PDAF and the limited amount of L-Mount lenses probably caused it to be less popular than expected.)
No Mp4 Lite Codec - that's really bad news. I really hope they don't make it an S9 exclusive. An 50 Mbps 4k 3:2 fullgate codec would be REALLY useful for some kinds of for example long-time (multi-hour) recordings where the 200 Mbps LongGOP eregular videos would just not be feasible.
I get a feeling it will no doubt come to cameras that can support it at some point. Being it works with the new app, it would be crazy not to include it at some point. Fingers crossed.
Does the GH7 have 20x magnification in manual focus mode? And does it look sharp like on the GH5ii? The GH6 wasn't that sharp when doing this (and it didn't have 20x).
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Thank you. That was a major point of contention on the GH6. Many people didn't buy it for that very reason because they'd have f/0.95 lenses that were sharp on the GH5ii but not the GH6. Also, lack of 20x.
5:06 When a model moves out from frame, auto focus on the trees is very fast and "sharp". Can this be reduced to more slow/soft? Cause if this is how auto focus works its unusable to me honestly. Its to fast. (I dont really use autofocus anyway, just asking)
It does not come with an external battery charger, I spoke about that at the end. It will come with a USB-C style charger to connect to the USB-C port. I didn't get one in the sample box so I couldn't show it.

amazinggg camera butt i think the Gh5s is still better than the gh6 and gh7, we are still waiting for the gh6s or the gh7s for filmaking, i think the gh7 and the gh6 are hybrid cameras, we want a cinema camera like the gh5s
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Yes, the gh7 definitely beats the gh5s in many aspects but I don't know if it beats it in ISO, the double native ISO of the gh5s is impressive, on the other hand the gh5s has a low pass filter, something fundamental that the gh6 and the gh7 do not have and it makes the video look more cinematic, recording above 4k is actually not necessary in most situations, almost no one uses 6k in the industry and most devices uses 4k, it is also not essential to record at that many fps unless you want an ultra slow motion clip but it is not essential either, cinema is recorded at 24fps and the quality of the gh5s is impressive, I also have the lumix s1h and I prefer the gh5s for cinema
I thought GH7 would came 2025 with new sensor, evf and innovations. Now GH7 is just GH6 mk2 with same iq and features already existing. Just like om systems om1 mk2.
It's very close now. It's similar to how the G9II and S5II compare. The G9II crops less with the e-stabilisation mode on compared with full frame cameras, and its the same with the GH7. I didn't really notice it being way better or anything with those modes on.
@@aiseurnae5976 I mainly shoot vertically at 100fps in 1080p on my Sony A7R5, I do a lot of food and drink videos for FB, Insta and Tiktok but nothing for YT. Would I be better with the G9II over the GH7. The one thing the GH7 has is the 32bit float, that would be so helpful, because sometimes I'm moving around a business so fast it's difficult to monitor my sound properly

Gh6/Gh7 body is superior

I love my G9M2 and sold my GH6 to get it. Not just because of the G9M2 focus, but I just never did like the feel of the Gh6 in hand; no, no GH7 for me.

Hope 32-bit support of the DMW-XLR2 is also backported to the S5 II / S5 II X. On my Rode Wireless Pro, it's just great and gives you far more freedom than the audio support on the S5 II (X). The latter requires a LOT of attention and IMHO is a PITA as you also need to keep an eye on the corrent level if don't want the auto-limiter mess up the audio.
Now that Model2 supports all four channels (and two of them coming from the new 3.5 jack), it'd be the perfect companion to the Rode Wireless Pro receiver (which also has a 3.5 output) too. Currently, I use a plain 3.5 wire to feed the receiver's output directly to the camera and, of course, it rules out using the other two channels. So I can't record for example the inner mike's audio on the third channel.
The Gh6 was just release and I see the GH7 out so soon.... what will the GH6 users do now...

I wonder how long you can record with power delivery via USB-C .... I know there is also new Panasonic dummy battery that allows mains power and USB recording at the same time.

liking the GH7 good job Panasonic this time. But WoW that FX3 test example at 16:22 blows out the rest in comparison, being the cleanest while still can see the grey card and tiles in the dark
People when demonstrating the GH7 in ISO12800 with almost no discernible noise - "yeah better stick to 4000". I must be blind or something, haha.
It’s usable easily to 6400 but it might be too noisy for others above that. That said, it looks way better than older cameras from the GH line.
S5iix owners deserve raw talk about it
The S5IIX has no CFExpress Type B slot, so there's no way it could write to a V90 card. Hopefully it comes to the external SSD capability in the future. Fingers crossed!

I have 2 questions... Can you charge these new batteries on the GH5 charging adapter? And I was using the Panasonic Image app a lot with the GH5 to be able to monitor my self on my iPhone. Will the Panasonic Image App work with the GH7 together?

These won't charge (from memory) on the GH5 charger as the new chargers are top loaded ones. There's a few third party ones or you can use any of the ones made for the S5/S5II/GH6 etc.

I like how you have the panasonic boxes setted and that they slowly take more and more space thus framing the sony boxes in the corner. If lumix goes on like that they will get far more reputation than sony. And to be real sony cameras have far less value/price ratio and people keep buying them just for their fame. I hate every moment with my a6300 here when I have to shoot 4k and sweat due to it overheating or when I have to stabilize in post.
Maybe one day I will be able to buy one of those newer panasonics (s5 and later) so I can have a real camera and that 10bit video.

Thank you for the review but I'm maybe not as enthusiastic as some people here. To resume, this is basically a bigger/heavier G9II with a fan and ProResraw.
I really prefer the colors of my GH6 over the G9II, very sad Panasonic used the same color science than the G9II for the GH7. And no, adding saturation doesn't match the G9II to the GH6, I use both cameras and it's not so simple. Even in raw pictures, it's not so easy because the colors and tones are different, the GH6 has really nicer colors in my opinion.
I use more my GH6 than my G9II because of colors and the slightly better detail rendering in 5,7K. I also have some issue with my G9II and old lenses like the 45-175mm which has video accuracy issue making the whole image out of focus. Of course the GH6 is much slower, but AF-S works everytime, no accuracy issue. I wonder if the GH7 has solved this issue.
Also, since the S5II launch, it seems we can't get any comparison video about image quality/fine details (with crop) between the recent and old Panasonic cameras. Yet, detail rendering is one of the most important thing, the ability to render video frame as close as a raw picture. I will defintely get a GH7 to compare it to my GH5,GH6,G9II,S5,S1 and S5II.

The GH5II uses the same BLK22 so you'll be fine.

I was disappointed that the GH7 doesn't have bluetooth. And disappointed in the price of $2,000 for the body only. Micro four thirds no longer offers a competitive price. Great comprehensive video, Shane! Which system do you like better for easy color grading and podcasting/TH-cam? Sony FX series or Lumix GH7 / S5iix (I'm concerned about the moire with s5iix)??
They all will give you great results now. I never shoot with log inside so all of the out of camera profiles are great on both Sony and Panasonic. I use picture profile 1 on my FX3/FX30 and Natural on the Panasonic gear (like in this video) If you're shooting in regular frame rates the S5II is the way to go and I always find vlog a lot easier to shoot and grade. I think the X will be overkill for long recordings unless you need the other features of that camera for some reason. For tripod and long recording situations anything with active cooling will do the job.

I don’t know what firmware was on these preproduction cameras that was sent out for TH-camrs to test and review because when I finally got my GH7 from B&H the autofocus is horrible and to make sure I wasn’t doing the wrong thing or had the wrong settings I had a video chat with B&H camera specialist and they was having the same result with their camera using the same lens Leica 12-60 so they are contacting Panasonic to see what is going on.
I had what was close to the original firmware. There's a new update for teh GH7, but the AF works really well. Same on the G9II. If you're doing anything with a person in the frame make sure you turn human/body detection on in the menu. Mine performed as good as my G9II (which I purchased).
Do you need a cloudlifter or something similar with the XLR2 if you want to use it with an SM7B? How good are the new pre-amps on this unit? I own the XLR1 and it has terrible pre-amps imo. I still love it for its simplicity though!
You don't always need a cloudlifter or SE Dynamite, but the Shure SM7B always works better with one as it adds a bunch of clean gain without adding noise.
The big question is, is this the new A CAM or does the S5IIX still hold that spot

I haven't tested all of that functionality yet, but it's compatible with both apps from what I was told by Panasonic. I will check it out.

I am really regretting my G9 II purchase of a few months ago right now.
I got a G9II and it's a great camera but I know what you mean. The problem is, no one knows this stuff is coming out. or if it will. The G9II is a great camera and if its not doing the job trade it in. At least in Australia, there's plenty of shops that do trade-ins.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy I'm primarily a video shooter so the internal prores raw and 32-bit float are actually of use to me. The only thing that would stop me from getting it is if the shutter angle is limited to 357 degrees like it is in the G9 II (I need it to go to 359 like in the GH5s).

Do you suggest using a gimbal with this or is the E stabilization that good?
If you need a gimbal for some sort of creative stuff go for it, but if you turn on e-stabilization, it's almost not required anymore. Gimbals are good for shots you can't get handheld. If you're just doing walking shots, I wouldn't use one myself.
Looks like a great camera, but... the Sony FX30 costs $600 less and has been out for a year-and-a-half now. Plus it has the advantage for those who want to use it as a B cam to a Sony full frame camera. Don't get me wrong: I love Panasonic cameras, but they always seem like they are released too late to make an impact on the market. Even the EVA1, which is a very nice cinema camera, was trying to play catch up with Sony and Canon cinema cameras. (I guess one can argue the S1H was ahead of the pack, but the lack of PDAF and the limited amount of L-Mount lenses probably caused it to be less popular than expected.)

No Mp4 Lite Codec - that's really bad news. I really hope they don't make it an S9 exclusive. An 50 Mbps 4k 3:2 fullgate codec would be REALLY useful for some kinds of for example long-time (multi-hour) recordings where the 200 Mbps LongGOP eregular videos would just not be feasible.
I get a feeling it will no doubt come to cameras that can support it at some point. Being it works with the new app, it would be crazy not to include it at some point. Fingers crossed.

@@GeekyNerdyTechy Thank you. That was a major point of contention on the GH6. Many people didn't buy it for that very reason because they'd have f/0.95 lenses that were sharp on the GH5ii but not the GH6. Also, lack of 20x.

5:06 When a model moves out from frame, auto focus on the trees is very fast and "sharp". Can this be reduced to more slow/soft? Cause if this is how auto focus works its unusable to me honestly. Its to fast. (I dont really use autofocus anyway, just asking)
You definitely can slow it down.
Yes, it has speed and sensitivity settings in the menu. This is all shot using the default settings.

It does not come with an external battery charger, I spoke about that at the end. It will come with a USB-C style charger to connect to the USB-C port. I didn't get one in the sample box so I couldn't show it.

@@GeekyNerdyTechy Yes, the gh7 definitely beats the gh5s in many aspects but I don't know if it beats it in ISO, the double native ISO of the gh5s is impressive, on the other hand the gh5s has a low pass filter, something fundamental that the gh6 and the gh7 do not have and it makes the video look more cinematic, recording above 4k is actually not necessary in most situations, almost no one uses 6k in the industry and most devices uses 4k, it is also not essential to record at that many fps unless you want an ultra slow motion clip but it is not essential either, cinema is recorded at 24fps and the quality of the gh5s is impressive, I also have the lumix s1h and I prefer the gh5s for cinema
I thought GH7 would came 2025 with new sensor, evf and innovations. Now GH7 is just GH6 mk2 with same iq and features already existing. Just like om systems om1 mk2.

No doubt.
It's very close now. It's similar to how the G9II and S5II compare. The G9II crops less with the e-stabilisation mode on compared with full frame cameras, and its the same with the GH7. I didn't really notice it being way better or anything with those modes on.
If you don't use EIS (never use it because of the quality drop), yes I can say my G9II (and certainly the GH7) has better IBIS than my S5II.
@@aiseurnae5976 I mainly shoot vertically at 100fps in 1080p on my Sony A7R5, I do a lot of food and drink videos for FB, Insta and Tiktok but nothing for YT. Would I be better with the G9II over the GH7. The one thing the GH7 has is the 32bit float, that would be so helpful, because sometimes I'm moving around a business so fast it's difficult to monitor my sound properly
