This recording of Christa Ludwig singing Erlkönig demonstrates why she was one of the finest singer/interpreters who ever lived. She manages to vividly characterize three different personas without the kind of histrionics so many others bring to this piece. And all with superb vocal technique. It's an astounding and moving performance.

@@matsmmmaaattsss8495 Yes, well spotted, what an extraordinary error for a professional accompanist to make at the end of Ständchen, especially in such a simple passage, and how odd it was never spotted by singer, accompanist or producer. And he/she played b-natural in both right and left hands (unsurprisingly). It does change the whole atmosphere of the ending. Was it deliberate?! It made me wonder if this was perhaps a disputed passage which had at some other time been thought to be in G-major, but I consulted Graham Johnson's tome on Schubert's songs and could find nothing there. The accompanist is not credited and is otherwise excellent. I searched a little and could not find a recording of Christa Ludwig singing this song (not to be confused with Standchen D920), but it obviously exists. It would be interesting to know who it was!
