    Up next we have another hardware emulation synthesizer called Dexed. However, in this case the hardware being modeled actually uses digital processors…this synth is none other than the very famous Yamaha DX-7. If you’ve listened to any pop music of the 80’s or early 90’s you’ve heard this synth in action and probably more than once. While a beast to program this instrument comes with the actual preset banks (cartridges) you’d get with the hardware. If you own a DX-7 you can actually edit and send sounds directly to it (talk about emulation). The form of synthesis used is called phase modulation (PM) and/or more commonly referred to as frequency modulation (FM). If you find yourself trapped inside on a rainy day with nothing better to do, I’d recommend programming some sounds on this thing from scratch.
    If you do program sounds from scratch don’t look to emulate real world sounds (at least not at first) this instrument is incredibly finicky and requires a good deal of patience.

    My first FM 101 course. very informative. This get me started using the Dexed which I have installed and was overwhelmed by all the knobs and graphs.

    I have an original DX7 I bought new when they first came out. Still works great and the best keybed ever on a synth. Somewhere in between weighted and non weighted. But just feels great. Having said that, Dexed is an incredible emulation. Most ears will never hear the difference, and what little difference there may be, if any, just becomes what the patch sounds like for what it is. I have a Yamaha KX88 controller and I love it. It's old, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it lol! So I have a great keyboard to trigger my soft synths with. This one is free on top of all that. If you don't have it in your collection yet, run, don't walk, to your nearest computer and download it. Thousands of patches free on the net. And MUCH easier to program if you like doing that than the original hardware version. My top three synth plugs are Diva, Dexed and Hive. There are others, but those three are the meat and potatoes for me.

    it took me two days of reading the dx27's (dx7's lil brother) manual to get anywhere with its synthesis

    What a great video. Was searching for something like this for a while and the videos I watched first didn’t really get into the theory of how the synthesizer works. Thanks a lot, this was helpful!

    Well dah! You have to have good background in music theory as well as decent sound engeneering, math obviously, electronics and even synth history to get the full range of everything this guy's saying. Loved every second of it was very helpfull. Thank you so much!

    informative and helpful, my only issue is the tutorial is discouraging people from diving deeping into the synthesis process by describing a lot of things as very difficult/hard or very tricky.

    Next step is additive, because you can make all of these sound plus any other sound imaginable. They need to offer more additive gear, like something like an additive version of the electron digitone

    Any idea how to load it as a VST in reason?
    I know how to btw, just that dexed is not in a folder in my Mac applications. Should I create a separate folder?

  • @onionhat9141
    @onionhat9141 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Aye. I know it’s been 2 years but if any of y’all are having problems don’t worry I’ll help. Now if you’re tryin to get sounds from the DX7 (Roms, Banks, etc) that’ll be this site dxsysex.com. Now if you’re trying to get into it’s file, say Fl studio you’re gonna need to get into the fl studios file which shouldn’t be hard to search for and then find the Dexed file. Soon as you’re in there go to cartridges (I suggest you make a file and name it DX7 ) and you can place you’re SYSEX files into it.
    P.S. if you just have Dexed it’s the same process but instead of looking for fl studios just find the Dexed file. Also I just noticed that you can get DX100 and TX7 sounds too. And if any of you download off of internet explorer don’t, it doesn’t download the right way I use chrome which downloads way better
