Me and my girlfriend (who at the time worked at a law firm that specializes in car accidents) were talking about it a few weeks later and she brought up the point that it was probably because he had an aftermarket steering wheel

    You're right about the harnesses, but for the wrong reasons. Yes it does keep you in place and allow the neck to take the momentum, but so does a standard seatbelt that has a locking mechanism. Where a harness gets dangerous is when it isn't fastened properly in the car. In racing, there are regulations about where a harness must attach to a frame member, and this is all in relation to the driver. Improperly mounting a harness can result in serious spinal injury if you get in a wreck.
    Source: I build racecars.

    • @BlackOpsHR
      @BlackOpsHR 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Pretty sure the standard seatbelt is ment to be used along with the airbag and so when you hit something your body tilts, you get closer to the steering wheel and you hit the airbag from pretty much every distance to the steering wheel... with a harness I can see you not even getting to the airbag before your neck snaps

    • @spamaccount2915
      @spamaccount2915 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BlackOpsHR Yeah you should really only have a harness if: it has an aftermarket wheel, if it has a roll cage w/ harness bar, if it has aftermarket seats, and if you actually need it.

    • @Hangule4
      @Hangule4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@BlackOpsHR actually if you look at the SAE documents and requirements, the airbag is considered a secondary passive restraint system. Which means they are tested independently from the seatbelt. The 3 point seatbelt's main purpose is to hold you to the seat, the cross strap is to prevent submarining. Note that none of this have to do with risks related to basilar skull fracture. If you look at the FIA research into this, it only happens in racing, where an accident can potentially bring a driver going from 60+MPH down to 0MPH nearly instantly. The risks are both a combination of the sudden massive drop in speed as well as the added mass of the head + helmet. Both conditions which don't exist on the street. The only problem with a harness is that they are typically 4 point, which does nothing for anti-submarining, and like mentioned above, are commonly incorrectly installed inducing risk to spinal compression. There are manufacturers like Schroth that sell perfectly street-legal harness that do have an anti-submarining strap that "snaps" open, allowing the body to torque over the lap belts, just like a regular 3 point seatbelt would do, but it's still up to owners to properly install harnesses as well as use a correctly sized seat.

    I'd add to all this:
    Do NOT lower your car so low that you can't get in and out of driveways: apart from the obvious, being this low can cause strikes on the cars chassis rails. THAT can render your car an instant write off, depending on where you live.
    Super-dark tint: I promise you you won't see well at all at night, and if your street isn't well-lit, you'll be bumping into things. And in frigid winter driving at night with windows open just to see out of the car is a so-so experience.
    Big heavy wheels with super low-profile tyres. They rob power, they make your car drink more fuel, they blunt acceleration, they increase loads on suspension, they do not like potholes AT ALL, they easily damage from those pothole hits buckling the wheel and cause tyre bubbles which can lead to it bursting.
    Chrome wheels. They are ok when they are new. But. Once chrome begins peeling off, it's only a matter of time when it'll make a gap between rim and the tyre causing an air leak. That can only be stopped by peeling all the chrome off. Not acceptable to owners of such wheels when that happens, so either expensive repair or new wheel. And that is inevitable since moisture condenses inside and starts corrosion process. Chroming isn't perfect so it's ALWAYS the case. Unless you run exclusively dry nitrogen in them.
    HID globes in a reflector headlights. Wanna get defected? Or worse beaten up? Then that's a mod for you. Truck drivers might just run you off the road for this. Not fun to be blinded by those things.

      So I am happy for my car but trust me, I am more performance driven than appearance. trying to build a time attack car out of my 240sx that I just happen to daily for now. But I love every bit of that car.

      @@garagemonkey526 Not entirely true. Like most things in life its gonna depend highly on your particular situation. For example I have much stiffer poly lower engine and transmissions mounts in my 2019 MINI JCW. These don't drastically increase the amount of vibration felt in the cabin but do wonders for cutting back on the stress put into the upper engine mounts extending the lifespan of those. The stock set up allows way too much movement in the engine and tends to kill upper mounts at around 50,000 miles. The real take away should be do your research and know your car/platform before doing mods.

And it still allows the car to be a daily driver. But in the end I decided not to do it, because installing the springs costs me 530 € and then I have to pay 429 € to make it street legal (papers etc.) where I live. I have always run catless exhaust on my car but they are all v8s and not a 4cyl that gets super ricey and drone-y when you do that. I always see kids throwing coilovers pretty much right away and their suspension is rock solid. I run drilled/slotted rotors and ceramic pads and they work better than factory even 2 minutes into the drive. The vented hood just doesn't make much sense, engines can get wet. A quick release steering wheel is fine if you ask me. If the car is an old one and doesn't have an airbag from factory, also, isn't it illegal in some places to remove an airbag? I remember reading or hearing about it somewhere but I don't really remember where. As it's a safety hazord to remove them.
    I personally used to like really loud cars, but after living on a road where you hear loud BMWs, Audis, and Mercedes every day it got quite tiring and annoying. I prefer them to loud bikes that have a higher pitch of a tone. Even though I don't like them I still respect their owners for liking them. We can say like, a Nordic Exhaust system or a Maptun Exhaust system. Not the loudest ones in the world. This is just how I like exhaust systems, if you want a loud car as a daily driver then do it. My dad's Saab 900 Turbo Convertible (95) had a loud Nordic exhaust system from what he said when he bought it 13 years ago (It was Nordic tuned for like, stage 2 or 3) but he changed it into a more quieter exhaust system that still helps with performance and is somewhat quiet. I personally wished that it was a little louder, but maybe if I get the car (They've mentioned that there's a chance for it) I could possibly put in a Nordic Exhaust system back in it or a Maptun once the transmission is replaced as well as the shock absorbers.
    What I'm trying to say is that, just make sure that it fits your taste. If you like to hear a loud car 24/7 then do it. If you want a quiet one then go for that. Maybe something in between. It all depends on your taste.

    I went full catless on my previous car -- wouldn't recommend it! It was cool and fun for the first year or two, but then it started getting louder, and stinking more. Years later, I was ashamed to be starting my loud ass car in the apartment parking lot at night, and felt guilty about constantly pumping out awful-smelling toxic fumes to everyone else on the road. It also caused some unnecessary snags when it came time to trading it in. If I remember correctly, the dealership seemed ready to back out of the deal unless I had the stock exhaust & header on hand (which thankfully, I did.)
    Don't go catless for 5 more horsepower, unless you are willing to keep your stock parts, and will be willing to swap them back if you find yourself having second thoughts about driving a loud, stinking car years down the road.

      Valved exhausts are a gift. Quiet when in the neighborhood, loud and free flowing for power on the track. I can't comment on the smell thing though. I run e85 in my catless set up and cant smell anything myself and have never had anyone say they smell much of anything either

    When the video started, I noticed your hood and was about to comment and ask you what happened to your vented hood...then I got to your 7th point :P I was on the fence of getting vented hoods (in Australia, so don't have to worry about snow) on a white STI, but was worried about the nuances it can bring. Your video about the hood had inspired me to check it out earlier :) I guess, wheels would be my next. Quick question: Do you still run ELH? Did you change the up and down pipe when you did the mod? What's your stand on those mods re: a daily/weekend drive car? I want to just let the stock engine perform at its best by getting a better intake, killerB ELH, nvidia up and down catted pipe with my existing R400 and get it tuned at a dyno.

    • @Scoobyfreak86
      @Scoobyfreak86  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes i still run the killer b el headers. Downpipe was changed to a catted Grimmspeed when I went to stage 3.
      Car is in the shop right now getting an up pipe and new turbo in.
      El headers is definitely the route to go if you want to keep it as reliable as possible.

    Okay, I gave a Honda from the early 90’s. I was going to do a bucket seat conversion along with a racing harness and a quick disconnect wheel. My steering wheel already does not come stock with an airbag and also my seatbelts have the centrifugal type locking design so when you get into an impact you are completely locked in place…I wanted to do a harness system because I thought that it would be safer and more reliable than the original seatbelt system. Am I wrong?

    • @uwusauce666
      @uwusauce666 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      stock seatbelt is safer than harness for a daily, if you got for harness you need a hanz device and a helmet which lessens your vision BUT its up to you

      In terms of what? I went over my thoughts on the whole thing in this video th-cam.com/video/1jxJ98TJaoI/w-d-xo.html . I am not running anything on my car that effects emissions, so there is nothing that I need to do differently.
      There are some obstacles some need to get around with the recent changes. However, people are definitely blowing things out of proportion on what and who it is actually effecting.

    Omg I have “track” pads on my sti, honestly so annoying, sure it’s great on the twisty back roads but holy hell. Driving down town or regular driving is terrible, gotta slam the brakes as they’re not heated up yet, squeal like crazy until they’re up to temp, just all around not fun, once these are gone I’m replacing them with some OEM+ pads

    Never heard of anyone who was annoyed by a catless with a straight pipe, I barely hear the drone on my ETS system. Well, okay the people who were annoyed were the houses I blow past in the countryside at 1am. This sounds more like the do's and don'ts for the city slickers. I agree with the half cage and roll cage, if it is not a designated race car do no install that, along with the quick disconnect wheels and the 5-6 point harnesses for various reasons.

    • @Scoobyfreak86
      @Scoobyfreak86  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s just vented hoods in general. The vis is the only one that has the removable rainguards which was one of the reasons why I chose it. Others don’t have them and are open all the time.

    I think people find fixed back/bucket seats tend to be uncomfortable if you dont adjust the angling of the seats. Adjusted the recaro pole position in my car to be higher in the front and lower in the back. This is so it's a bit more ergonomic and doesn't fatigue your legs while driving. Haven't been tired of sitting in it daily driving 50+ miles daily.
    Quick release steering wheels i agree aren't smart for most daily drivers. Only acception would be older cars that didn't already come with airbags, where they have other safety equipment. First car that comes to mind is a CRX, which doesnt come with airbags to begin with, or a 90-93 integra that comes with automatic seatbelts.

    Do your leather recaro seats still function with heated seats version?

    • @Scoobyfreak86
      @Scoobyfreak86  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can’t opt the recaros with heat if you want that option to work still.
