The part about why you choose the STI was very well said 👍 So many people get wrapped up in going faster and faster and having more and more horsepower when in reality that's not what makes a car fun. A car is fun because of the way it makes you feel when you drive it.

    • @Autofreakgarage
      @Autofreakgarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Yes sir! I mean, more power is always fun. No question there. But it’s not the first thing someone should focus on. Focus on driver mods (seats, suspension components, seat time, etc.). I know people that have 300hp cars that can out drive people with 500hp cars all day long. No need to complicate things. Keep it simple.

Perfect points. I’m an old car guy with years of experience owning so many expensive cars. The STI is just so much fun to drive. So well balanced and predictable. Planted at high speeds. And yes super reliable. I’m finding that it’s more fun than it was to drive Vipers, Corvettes etc. Incredible value for the money. Those who drive it understand it - if you enjoy driving. Agree no issues whatsoever - it’s a pleasure to own.

I test drove a 2020 WRX, best car I have ever driven. Yes, I did drive a faster cars and non of them had so much of control and feeling of the driving. Currently driving a 2012 impreza and got it about 4 years ago, had no issues. Used to burn oil, but after the recall done on the engine valve springs, drives better and not burning oil. The only issue I had was the regular maintenance. Very cheap and reliable car so far. Not as comfortable like my Honda, but it handles the road so much better. When it is -40C and deep snow, just driving around pulling people out of the snow. Handles the road better than expansive 4x4 trucks, surprisingly. Space? If you put the seat down, it turns into a small truck inside. Did lots of renovation / construction with this one. Only drywall wouldn't go inside... Doors, wood, tools and 65 inch TV goes inside this car no problem. I even did some offroad in the mountains on this car. Great car! Don't go to crazy off road, impreza doesn't have the clearance of an SUV, but it is an amazing car to own and drive.

So happy hearing this. I always wanted a wrx or sti. I was perfectly happy driving my stock 2012 mazda 3 until someone hit me and totalled it. I actually test drove a 2020 and it felt so good. It was used and i didn't really like the idea of getting something used knowing how some people beat these things up all the time and also the used price wasn't really nice for the amount of miles. I actually put a deposit on a toyota hatchback that I absolutely love the look of and knowing how much fun i had in a simple stock mazda 3 that gave me no issues i knew the toyota would be the same if not even more reliable (plus like you said slow car fast = fun). I put a deposit on the toyota because i was scared of the ownership of the wrx. I don't mind the extra costs - it's not like its a fortune more. just some slight lifestyle adjustments and putting more care into your car. however i've been waiting months for the toyota and i feel like the sales guy just doesn't give a crap on any kind of updating since then. I happened to just randomly score a red 2022 wrx on its way here in about 2 weeks and I put a small refundable deposit on it. Now i need to make the decision. I'm trying not to let horror stories i see bother me. It's just always such a different feeling when youre about to get something you always wanted. Like something is just gonna go terribly wrong. But it does seem like a lot of these stories are about people pushing this thing full throttle all day every day every trip. I'm not gonna say I wouldn't have fun in this car, but i know i'm not gonna drive like an ass. For the most part I drive slow and carefully because i do not trust other drivers at all. I think i'm cancelling my toyota and going with this because i want to overcome that fear and truly enjoy my driving experience. I'm not super car smart either which sometimes scares me as well. But it's not rocket science. I think the wrx is a great car to overcome that fear and be more in tune with your vehicle and also just learn about vehicles more in general. Very excited and nervous at the same time but i really appreciate this video!

Hey, your video is one of the best of STI ownership story. I'm sure Subaru and STI would be appropriate to hear your story. Japan is a small country and so many twisted roads and corners instead of the big and long straight streets like the US. Thus, the Japanese auto companies worked hard on the sensitive response way in every aspect. So that people still can enjoy driving in Japan. Also, the speed limit is lower than the US, and expenses of ownership are much higher than the US. So, the Japanese auto companies had to work on to reduce costs extremely hard. So, what you see today for any Japanese automaker is the result of the last 80 years. Subaru started an airplane company in a long time ago. So, they use some knowledge of history. I sometimes speak to STI Japan. If you are a Subaru and STI lover, you might love visiting STI Japan in Tokyo. Hope you enjoy your car.

@@rickyrod9746 flashing the ECU will void your warranty, even if you do flash it back before you take it to the dealer. They can see a log. I wouldn't add an intake without a flash either, you could run too lean and cause a problem. Nice and relatable, down to earth talk about your experiences, we need more of that! As far as stage 2 goes, its actually a rather mild step in the modification process. Sure, if you get a tune you can net some pretty good power gains which is always nice, but the most beneficial gain of reliability is often overlooked. Even today the turbo ej motors use the blank plate downpipe flange design, which for 1, allows for a lot of turbulence and back pressure when getting into high boost(enough for wastegate to open) that puts unnecessary stress on the turbo, and 2 being that the plate can block/prevent the wastegate from fully actuating. A bellmouth downpipe will make your car much happier along side a tune. You also get the infatuating sounds of the turbo spooling, which is my favorite part lol

I test drove a lot of cars out there prior to getting my STI, I’m talking about audi s3, mustang GT350, camaro ss, civic type R, vw golf R and Dodge Charger. None of them gave me that feeling of excitement like the STI did. Although these cars are way faster than the STI but none of which put a smile on my face like the STI. It’s got that raw feeling of being able to control the car and not the car controlling you.

My father bought a 2015 subaru wrx for me (17 now). Weve had to replace the oxygen sensors and take it to the dealer 1 time, missing a fuse throwing a CE light,
It was a rebuilt car however, but besides those, its worked great.
But, my father has a 2015 outback and has had it for 3-4 years with 115k miles, the only thing that has ever went wrong was a blown fuse for the usb outlet.

Going to build it as a project has over 175 000 km, no issues. Previous 07 Had a HKS hi-power exhaust, EVC boost controller, turbo timer, cold air intake, Perrin inlet hose, HKS intercooler, SSQV and a tune. Zero issues with any of the Subies. Love them to bits. Awesome video man, I've got a 2008 STI hatchback and just hit 111k. Mine is stage 2 protuned and still running strong! Definitely had to do a lot of routine maintenance after 105k (noisy worn out pilot bearing.. annoying as hell and also did the clutch at that time), timing belt, water pump, thermostat, full brake job, failed power steering pump, spark plugs, diff and tranny fluids, upgrade to koyorad radiator due to plastic end tanks on the stock radiator cracking). Mostly all typical maintenance for a car over 100k miles but it's well worth it knowing I have the peace of mind that it will stay reliable for many years to come. Definitely love the versatility and practicality of the hatch!!

My first Subaru was an 04 STI with 116k second owner. Timing Belt kit twice so far, second clutch atm, air filters, oil changes every 2.5k, spark plugs every 35-40k miles. Currently at 237k miles, original engine, bolt on w/ pro tune @ 200k lol. Only issue I had was with the AVCS solenoid bank 2 because of the little screen filters that came in those years got clogged, other than that... nothing out of the ordinary. Does burn/leak about a quart of oil every 1.5k but it has currently 236,877 miles atm. Also a 2017 completely stock with 36k miles no issues whatsoever. I've owned Honda's, Chevy's, Fords, Toyota's. I've never been happier with any of those over my Subaru's.

This video was great. This is the video you show to those who ask the same question, are Subaru's reliable.
Ofc I dont know if you are the biggest subaru lover in the world, but at the same time, it's not easy not to love them so much.
As you said, everything works, it's "cheap" and almost every Subaru you can buy is one of the best in it's class.
I bought a 2018 Subaru Forester 2.0iL (in Norway XT models are crazy expensive, and almost impossible to get) I think i looked at a new car
for over 1 year, open for everything in that pricerange, tried a dozen different cars, but nothing surpriced me as much as the Forester.
The driving comfort, design (I like the Suv box look) reliable, and ofc for me the most important part, awd-system. I've helped so many cars from
ditches because the car or driver can't at all drive on snow, but my Subaru and I work so well together, plow through the snow and full on grip on ice.
I was not a Subaru fan before i tried one and read about the history and why it's one of the "JDM" cars from Japan.
    Again, great video.
    Your car looks amazing!

I have a stock 2015 STI and it was dealer maintained at every service interval. Had to have the boost control solinoid replaced twice because it failed while driving twice and the car over boosted and went into limp mode. Around 45k miles the engine developed rod knock and they replaced the short block. Took 2 months, but I had a loaner car. I don't consider these cars reliable. I don't drive it like I stole it and those are mostly commute miles. My 03 Honda Civic Si has 220k miles on it and no major mechanical failures, so that's my comparison point.

Subarus in general are really reliable. I can't speak for the EJ257 guys, but I've had 3 STi's with the EJ207 (GC8, GDB and GRB) in various states of tune and they've been totally rock solid. Additionally, I've had a 3.0r spec b legacy and my wife had a S-GT Impreza and they were rock solid too.
My ideal Subaru would probably be another GRB hatch or a GDB Spec C with basic breathing mods, a nice remap, a full course of Group N bushes and some good coilovers. Done. Not straying too far from factory simply works with these cars.
I've driven and owned many other performance cars and keep going back to Subaru, but would happily own a Evo 5 or 6 too.

Just imagine how reliable a veyron would be for daily driving. Imagine how often “car guys” would break it, complain about the gas mileage, then blame the manufacturer for making a shitty product. All while installing random parts and never tuning it, lugging it around town, doing random burn outs, trying to race everybody they see, never the checking fluids, taking off without letting it warm up. I could go on, but when it breaks, they’ll just say; “well my (insert random n/a or small turbo economy car) is still running and I drive it the same way” I digress, the root problem is, people drive these cars like they stole them. Instead of driving them like they paid good money for them.

Agreed on the M3, I owned a 2004 M3 and oh boy, the damn thing was expensive. I always wanted a WRX, you probably just changed my mind about the reliability issues with it. Thanks!

The factory no name battery in my 2019 STI needed to be replaced within six months. Dealership gave me a new Subaru battery. No problems 1.5 years and 9200 miles later. Probably will be doing the stage 2 with Cobb intake you did soon.

Agreed, i don't BAG my car nor adding crazy mods. I Lub my 2016 STI, i treat it with respect. Respect=low maintenance and decent cost of ownership.

Nice video, informative.....I’m on my 4th Subie ...2006 STi, 2014 Crosstrek, now I have a 2009 Outback and a 2016 Hyperblue STi. You hit it right on the head and couldn’t explain it any better. People do B.S. mods, blow the motor, then blame the company 🙄. Well said, Thank You

Got a 2012 used WRX with 100k. At 104k the head gaskets blew. I payed a total of 3k to get the heads rebuilt, new oem gaskets, new stage 1 clutch and flywheel, spark plugs, oil and oil filter, coolant, koyorad aluminum radiator, timing belt kit, and some other stuff. I just got it back yesterday and it feels so good!
I’ve wanted a subie since I was a kid and now I finally have one. I’ve done a lot of research on the cars and was expecting to fix the head gasket at least once. I took advantage of the engine being out and replaced everything I could. Now, I feel I can fully enjoy the car knowing that I fixed a major repair and added some other goodies. As you said, maintenance is key and I’ve always kept up with it in my previous cars. I love my subie makes driving so enjoyable and fun! Worth every penny. Time to get a pro-tune now that I know my engine is healthy!

Such an interesting video. I've always wanted the car to be an experience. That's not about the most power / fastest / quickest which is what you rightly point out. Yours looks superb btw. And I feel that despite it's shortcomings (every car has them) it'll be missed when the new one is released. Buy them while you can!

My 2016 STI base just passed 110,000km. Its a daily grocery vehicle with once a week mountain road runs where it does get redlined and pushed... engine is not touched, its got a catted turboback exhaust.. my little silver car had never let me down due to a mechanical issue.. only thing broke was the usb plug in the center arm rest compartment ... I'm still on my original clutch too XD
