    The Lexus LFA would be my top pick for an over engineered car. They spent 15 years developing it and even had Yamaha tune the sound. Unfortunately by the time it was released, it was about 5 years out of date.

      It was Toyota biggest mistake but at the same time one Thier undying successful creation, for me they could have release the aluminum version at Detroit while working on next gen of it.
      Like Elon with Tesla the LFA could have been at the top and still make money back for the company .

    • @lancercool1992
      @lancercool1992 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      Stop thinking it’s unfortunate, they never expected it to sell, the car was made to send a message, it did its job.
      I also doubt it really took 15 years to develop given the isf had to be developed by a small group of engineers using off work hours out of pure passion and keep the whole thing a secret from management, UNPAID.
      Then the LFA gets released 4 years after the gen 1 ISF? Hmm?
      The isf and gs are the true unfortunate ones to get axed because consumers can’t recognize a good car to save their lives.

    As for the GTO. Being an owner of one myself i have to say it wasn't overengineered, it just had a ton of cool gimmics. Almost all gtos today have at least half of the tech broken or otherwise not working. Some people even say the tech like the AWS and Active Aero makes the car slower on track.
    Oh and the fact that some replacement parts are literally impossible to buy today. The only thing keeping these cars on the road is the small community driven aftermarket scene that produce and distribute parts at a premium

    • @anonimous2451
      @anonimous2451 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yep, that is what happens to ANY high tech car. Because the suppliers of the parts stop making them. Electronics, while fancy and nice when new, can and usually do end up being the straw that broke the camel's back cause it'll break your damn wallet. I owned one for 3 months and got rid of it quickly. And the reason, it was the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 AWD hard top convertible. One of the rarest cars ever made, but, I had a minor issue with a minor part that ended up being a damn nightmare. The car was a Blast to drive, held the road like cat's paws even in the snow and it had a very respectable collector market price. I sold it for 6k more than I got it for after a few engineering fixes. but I also knew those fixes would not last so I dumped it.

      I agree, it's a nice car, i've driven one as my wedding car. However it's very expensive to run, consuming up to 30L/100km and with rare and expensive spare parts. Half of the stuff on this car wasn't working either (Aircon, ABS, Active aero)

The belts in which run along the door. Once I took off the door for a maintenance, bruh, every 10 centimeter of the whip it had a strap, I just loved it's over engineering lol. Interesting fact, when this thunderbird generation was built, the project exceeded the determined limit of weight and price, because of the over engineered suspension.

May not seem like much but in 2008 I took my mom's 1990 ls400 down a super crappy back road doing 135 and I felt like goku doing that speed on what felt like a cloud. The car didn't stop pulling at 135, I chickened out. Mind you I was a teenager at the time. We would have kept the car but it started falling apart about 3 years later. I tried to keep it together but those parts where just too expensive. I still regret not having enough money to keep it. It will all be one of my favorite cars ever, design and quality were unmatched for it's time and the 2 decade plus that followed.

    Not because of it being super expensive. Not because of it being super fast.

Also, I’d consider the BMW i8 hybrid, it’s very complex and a nightmare to maintain - look both cars up on TH-cam. Finally, some of the Citroen sedans were amazing, ahead of their times but not imported in US due to variable height suspension banned by the DOT.

    The Porsche 959 cost twice as much to develop & engineer than Porsche sold it for.
    The Lexus LFA was in development & engineered for a decade.
    I agree with you on the 1st gen Mitsubishi GTO too, it was so advanced & over engineered.
    I think the 3rd gen Honda Prelude 4WS was also a over engineered car because Honda designed it with a mechanical 4WS system, rather than the electronic version they put on later model's.
    It allowed the car to four wheel steer constantly rather than when the electronics would detect when it needs to.
    It allowed the car to have a faster slalom speed than any supercar or hypercar available, best thing is - to this day there has been no faults of the mechanical 4WS system that this gen Prelude has.
    The only other car's missing that was over engineered was the Saab 900 Turbo & McLaren F1.
    The McLaren's engine bay was lined with gold because gold was the best heat reflector available at the time & it was the first carbon fiber bodied car.
    It also still holds the highest top speed from a naturally aspirated car & set the record for the highest top speed on launch.

There was so much nonsensical crap we pulled out of that car. Oh man, after we were done, it was 225 lbs lighter and was crankin out 730hp with over 650 ft lbs of torque. It wasnt a race car either, it was a daily driver that just felt so right after we were done. It still had an awesome interior and was such a joy to drive. That thing was so freakin fast, and it was so stable at high speeds. You could be doing 120 mph in that car and it didnt even feel like it. I would build another one today.

      @@comdrive3865 well, I could go down to the community college when I am vaccinated, and see about getting a team together from the mechanic side, and from web design classes to achieve such a thing.
      I would also like technology that can render a holograph of a car, make it interactive to show the process of a given repair or upgrade, and highlight in red any component that is not functioning properly.
      Such a system would make tuning and restoration accessible to even novices, once the price factor can be minimized.

      @@4ffff2ee lol sorry, not trying to be a dick, it's just that I feel like this point is always mentioned in car journalism when talking about the G wagen, so I found it weird that this was stated as something surprising.

      It was also sold for military use, but not exclusively, not even at the beginning in 1979.
      The military version in Germany (the Wolf) also has some differences, it has a 24 V electric system instead of the 12 V system of the civil version.

    Phaeton, GTR, and W124 which is a car i owned (E420). You're 100% right about that Benz as it was an engineering marvel, but it was Built by the first car company ever, and a company who's prodigious engineering is exemplary as Mercedes benz sets the standards for the cars you'll be buying in the next 20 years! Remember when only a Benz had massaging seats, duel/ tri/ quad zone climate control, heated steering wheel, and the list goes on. I'm talking about a company that flips their cars (including the convertibles) to make sure you will be safe in the event of a rollover... the convertibles have no roof and they're still safe in a rollover than a Toyota, or a Honda. There's transportation companies, and then there's Mercedes benz, the company they look up too like a wise published elder physicists with a doctorate, a room full of trophies, including a noble prize, teaching them when they've yet to learn multiplication, or how to how to divide fractions... in otherwords the most overqualified teacher to ever teach. When the headrest are power, both seats have 3 position memory, and the seatbelt is being handed to your passenger by a robotic arm to their surprise and awe, you know you're in the definition of over engineered... or is it just engineered like no other. Das bestes oder niet.
