The fact this dude made a whole movie using freaking xbox kinects of all things is insane. Imagine what he could do with an actual budget and a professional team. He's got some serious talent
As much as I’d like to think that he’d buy state of the art technology, we all know he’d probably buy 3 more Kinects, a few Wii remote plus, a Dsi, and one of those laser pens. And he’d still be able to make something that looks great.
Xbox Kinects are easily the most impressive things Microsoft ever made, they've been used for non-gaming purposes like military, airports, healthcare, 3D processing, etc because they're so cheap (anything else that does something similar to Kinects would have cost multiple times more). Funny that it sucked at its original intended usage (eg. gaming) but other industries soon found other uses for it to the point Microsoft started to sell them as non-gaming products.
The guy “had a nervous breakdown and ran off with the money?” You mean, he stole the money? Hopefully he didn’t steal too much, but at least Carl’s laughing about it.

I’ll never get tired of the Paul Holt joke, and getting it unexpectedly here had me crying. KARL HOLT deserves all the recognition for pulling this off all by himself. What an absolute madlad
Kinects are actually really good for motion capture, I have no idea why kinects suck for games but whenever I see someone using it for motion capture it's like the patron saint of budget mocap hardware
@@rainbowtheranger The Kinect themselves are fine if I'm honest with ya, it probably have to do with the developers not fully utilizing its full potential, aside from few Kinect games which play fairly decent or even well at times. I've heard an addon for Garry's Mod that lets you use Kinect to animate ragdolls through motion capture.
If you want to see any games that uses the Kinect properly, look no further than Dance Central. I've played all the games and not only are they genuinely fun, but the body tracking is very accurate. Especially in the third entry.
It only looks like Dawn was trying to save Benny. Jack wasn't just going to kill the toy, but stab himself through Benny. I guess so the two could still be together? Idk.
@@BlackWaterGun I mean it honestly looked like he was you don’t need much pressure to stab a toy but in a state of panic you have a bit less control over that kind of thing so to me it makes sense
@@BlackWaterGun also look at the placement and angle of the knife. The knife is tilted downwards little bit and the knife is behind both of them and looks to have enough wind-up for a strong stab. If he just wanted to only kill the toy, the knife would be over only Benny and would probably be pointing all the way down and with a short distance to cover.
@@BlackWaterGun you cant “be satire” and also look at how he’s holding the knife. he wouldn’t be about to stab him that way without the knives path crossing him and the toy.
Tara's death was pretty horrifying I thought she was going to get out eventually as a last minute gag but no she just withered away where no one will ever find her until they realize there's an attic
Honestly...this is a stunning-looking film for one person. Wow!! Certainly one of the more technically brilliant films for a first-time indie director.
This comes to show that anything is possible w/determination and the will to learn and master new things. Holt did a phenomenal job on his movie and now since he had his work recognized by James, hopefully Karl will be receiving a lot of calls about working as a graphics designer
Seriously, it blows my mind how much of this was CGI he did on his own. How the hell is it I've sen massive studios do movies with multi-million dollar budgets with far worse CGI? Every studio should be begging to hire this man!
@@TonySamedi Its crazy what he used as well, he used a *GOD DAM KINECT FOR HELLS SAKES* just to capture the motion and then use it to help capture the CGI and implement it in his film! Imagine what he could do *w/Professional Equipment* at his disposal! 😳
Damn, this movie was almost entirely made by 1 guy, and it’s not even that bad! It’s a clear work of love and passion, which is very refreshing compared to the by the numbers, soulless, and mass produced horror films.
Something to be said, it’s cool of Holt to do all this and still make his character look pathetic and useless. Whenever you hear someone produced, directed, wrote, and starred in their own movie the character is some self insert wish fulfillment i.e. Tommy Wiseau or Neil Breen
@@FatherTime89 True, but the movie tries to make Tommy seem like the nice guy who was betrayed and did nothing really wrong. (I mean doesn't work but it is the intention.) If you ever read the disaster artist, he was very egocentric.
Absolutely. I was looking for the strings the whole time but when I saw the CGI setup with Benny bouncing around I had to pause the video out of shock.
I would watch these videos while doing credit make ups during my senior year in high school, these videos got me through the list boring days in my life and I gotta say I really appreciate this channel and James
Thinking about it, Benny Loves You might be the most impressive accomplishment in the film space. The fact that the film is a good romp with impressive effects is probably one of the best stories to come out of the Horror Genre. It doesn't really matter much for it's cultural impact, but Karl Holt deserves all the respect in the world for the project.
I haven't even fully watched the kill count, but if the biggest criticism for this movie that one dude basically made entirely by himself is that he's not a good writer, that is a masterful feat. Congratulations to Karl Holt for doing something legendary.
Benny Loves You is the kind of movie that Roger Ebert talked about back in the day when he said that eventually, people would be able to make a million dollar movie in their backyard. Considering it was a three person crew (with one doing 70% of the work _my god_ ) this is definitely something to be praised even if the story and pacing are flawed (as first movies go it's pretty good)
I think Dawn saved Benny because it seemed like Jack was going to do the "we die together" scene where the knife goes through both him and Benny. The way the montage of their friendship was played just before the knife was brought out seemed to be building up the emotion for this action. Dawn thought killing yourself to get rid of a doll was insanely stupid, so she slapped Benny away, saving Jack.
I'm pretty sure it has to be considering the Dad from the twilight zone met the exact same fate as dawns dad (I.e tripping on the doll and falling down the stairs)
yep there have actually been multiple movies before that have admitted to using a kinect for some of the digital effects used. even today its still quite versatile.
This is what is so cool about this. I love this series cause it shows the behind the scenes of horror movies, and as an amateur filmmaker/guy going to school for film, I adore the work. What's even better is when indie movies are covered like this. It shows the creative process behind a project and the love and work that go into it. It's not easy, but its fun and rewarding, and That's what I love to see, is people creating art through their passion projects. Thanks James!
There is a certain air on things made by a single person that just make them incredible in a way. The errors and nitpicks usually add to the charm, this is a person's passion project and it damn well shows! Now i have to check it out myself with some friends whenever I have the chance :D
I thought this movie was charmingly bad, but then I realized 1 person did all of it, and then I realized that this is incredibly impressive for a movie like this
I love the way Benny walks like how a kid plays, especially when grabbing Jack a beer Benny just bounces and it sloshes everywhere but he still got it to the table!
Benny is my absolute favorite horror comedy. The fact it was made by such a small crew and low budget makes it so much more impressive than a big budget movie. You can see the heart and dedication that went into it. I love Benny!!!
Karl Holt is a true independent film maker; I can’t believe how much one person accomplished for this movie. It was good of you to give him some well-deserved, additional exposure with this Kill Count, James.
Real quick, I know you said Tara's death was the lamest kill, but I think her death is a reference in itself. I don't remember the origin, but there's a joke or something along the lines of "There's a blonde skeleton in your closet, who is she? Last year's hide and seek champion!" I think that's what Holt was referencing with her death, which, to me, bumps it up a little bit. As he didn't use it for plot purposes or anything of the sort, I'm pretty sure it was intended as such. Great work as usual Dead Meat crew! I loved this one more than I thought I would
This guy should be proud of himself, making a movie mostly on his own thats a hour and a half long and actually doing a good job and actually sold copies
Props to creator of this film, he did EVERYTHING, and that is a lot of work to do. Also the animation for Benny is spot on! he does not look like he's being played by another person. Amazing looking indie film

The fact that holt did so much work alone is just legendary
Imagine spending 5 years on a film only for the release to be ruined by a once in a 100 year pandemic
That must suck a lot for Holt and I feel bad for him
While I'm sure Holt was frustrated by the pandemic (which is totally understandable), I don't think that it would be enough to keep him down for long. This guy has the patience of a saint, and he seems to be very driven. Karl Holt, if you're reading this, I got nothing but respect for you, bro. Congratulations on fulfilling your dream 👏.
@Vanilla Pudd TV, thank you!
That was pushed as a pandemic to scare u. It's ridiculous
Honestly it's really impressive that this was basically made by a single dude. And the way Benny walks is just incredible, the little guy is just happy to be here!

Benny's design, movements, and voice is frustratingly endearing. I adore the way they animated him.
I love how he used kinects for the mocap when in terms of games they barely work, just shows how good he was at working with what he had
Idk.
Nice theory! I think so too he had that look on his face
Bruh mad respect to this dude. That’s a Herculean task for whole crews let alone one person. That’s absolutely insane.

Full points to Karl Holt. He put more time into making this movie than I've ever put into anything.

Considering it was a three person crew (with one doing 70% of the work _my god_ ) this is definitely something to be praised even if the story and pacing are flawed (as first movies go it's pretty good)
I love the way that Benny just hops around
I think Dawn saved Benny because it seemed like Jack was going to do the "we die together" scene where the knife goes through both him and Benny. The way the montage of their friendship was played just before the knife was brought out seemed to be building up the emotion for this action. Dawn thought killing yourself to get rid of a doll was insanely stupid, so she slapped Benny away, saving Jack.
This movie is a true testament to that guy's talent.
Also, could the Amy doll be a possible reference to Talkie Tina from the Twilight Zone?
I'm pretty sure it has to be considering the Dad from the twilight zone met the exact same fate as dawns dad (I.e tripping on the doll and falling down the stairs)
Yes
@@gregjenkinson7512 oh yeah, good point.
Yeah I dunno why James thought it was a Gremlins reference. Hell, that even happens in Child's Play 2 as a reference to that Twilight Zone episode!
I think because of the horrible Christmas story. Something terrible happens on a day that’s supposed to be a celebration.
