I really admire your ability to appreciate pg13 horror as introductions to the genre for younger audiences. All too often veteran horror fans are quick to overlook the roll less gorey flicks play
There's an art to doing it right. There's a real difference in quality between something like M3GAN, which really manages to tell the story it both needs and wants to without much gore and that plague of PG13 horror from the early 2000s that were largely terrible scripts with the gory parts conspicuously removed that few people fondly remember. Unfortunately, those prior films have seriously tainted the whole field of 'general audience' horror so most people assume it's automatically a sign of poor quality.
I really like the running thread where Cady turns to tech addiction because the adults in her life fail her. Gemma is both not ready for a child and uses her for her tech, the company is much more focused on using her to make money, the therapist clearly sucks at her job, and even in the opening scene she’s playing her iPad while her parents are arguing (it slso stuck out to me that Cady couldn’t think of a happy memory of her mom, and even her happy memory she finally comes up with involves her mom yelling at her until a spider scares her, which makes me think she might have not had the best relationship with her parents). Even the neighbor cares more about the neighbor feud than stopping her dog from biting people, and the cop does nothing about the bite. Every adult in this movie fails Cady, that’s why she turns to M3GAN. And while M3GAN represents technology, I also think you could see her as representing abuse and addiction as M3GAN gets violent, both things that kids can be exposed to online. M3GAN isn’t just a representation of technology and how kids are always on their damn phones these days, she’s also a pretty good illustration of how neglect pushes kids into unhealthy coping skills. Not just technology addiction, but violence and isolation. I even think M3GAN could serve as a metaphor for how kids turn to abusive online relationships when the adults in their life trust technology to take care of their kids. When I was in middle school in the days of Kik and Omegle, I knew multiple kids who got into unhealthy relationships with predators online because they had bad home lives and people online recognized that and used that to get close to them. M3GAN recognizes when Gemma is a bad guardian and protects Cady, building a bond between them, but when Cady isn’t ready to completely turn her back to Gemma M3GAN turns violent. That’s a pretty good representation of what I saw my friends go through. Anyways, the moral is stop blaming kids for being addicted to tech and blame the adults around them that would rather do anything else accept treat a child like a human being for five minutes Edit: Just realized that even the abusive kid at the camp only attacked Cady because the adults failed her. His mom failed to raise a decent human being and is shown failing to discipline him, while the counselor ignores the obvious red flag of a kid coming up and whispering something like “I don’t want to be with that scary ass kid”, so the counselor puts this kid… with the new girl. All the adults here suck.
theres a line in the m3gan commericial that stuck out about detecting learning disabilities and it makes me think that Gemma is on the spectrum and her creation of m3gan was her way of trying to create her ideal of a best friend. Gemma as a character has extraordinary tunnel vision and is unable to look ahead to unforeseen consequences. its not even that she knows what shes doing is wrong and doesnt care, its that she is completely unaware of what she is doing wrong in the long term. David literally has to point out to her the severe privacy violations of m3gan being able to store data as an example. It makes a really interesting and compelling character
@@PolygonyallI really like and agree with that point! There’s a lot of focus on Gemma and M3gan’s relationship in the movie, which I really liked. I think you’re right that M3gan wasn’t just a toy to Gemma, it was also what she would’ve wanted, and therefore her way of bonding with Cady without having to step out of her comfort zone (not to mention Gemma also just lost her sister). I also think that Gemma is supposed to on the spectrum, or at the very least her behavior is similar. I think that part of the reason Gemma wants to use M3gan instead of parenting Cady herself is because everyone around Gemma is telling her that she’s not ready to be a parent and she doesn’t instinctually know the right things to do or the right way to comfort her. Even when Gemma attempts to bond with her by explaining the toy (which Cady probably would’ve liked given how she liked Bruce), the therapist tells her she’s playing the wrong way. I think a lot of people on the spectrum or similar relate to being told that there’s just some part of your personality that’s missing that makes you incapable of being a loving and empathetic person, and the confusion when everyone around you seems to know what to do in emotional situations but not you. Like you said, I don’t think Gemma is malicious a lot of the time, she just doesn’t realize what other people would. But because everyone constantly criticizes her for it, she assumes that she’s just not fit to be a parent so it’s better if a doll does it anyways. But the reality is, even if Gemma doesn’t have “the parental instinct”, she just needs to come into it with honesty and vulnerability and genuine concern for Cady’s well-being. Despite what everyone says, there’s no programming for the perfect parent. I mean, M3gan IS the perfect parent, and she starts killing people and turns on Cady. Sorry, that was long, but I think contrasting Gemma (a human who acts robotic) and M3gan (a robot who acts human) shows a lot about what traits we consider necessary to be a parent. Not to say that Gemma is a good parent and doesn’t need to change, but in the ways that society treats neurodivergent people like they’re permanently broken and incapable of being good parents, which leads to them giving up even trying

I just realized that the idea of perpetual pets is kinda the idea of the movie boiled down into a commercial: instead of making a connection with a real living thing (a pet, your parents, your aunt, etc), the commercial encourages kids to treat the toy like a living thing to avoid the potential heartbreak of losing living things. And Gemma and Katie need to discover that letting technology handle things might be easy but it’s not as rewarding as human connection.

That scene in the woods really shows the amount of time they put into making characters feel real, even side characters. When I saw this in theaters, Brandon's death had my jaw firmly on the floor. Not since A Quiet Place have I seen a PG-13 horror movie so unapologetically kill off a kid.
It's old, and I don't think it was PG, but check out the 80s remake of the Blob. Genuinely great movie and probably the most brutal kid death in all of horror.
@@TheGeneralDisarray I tried to watch Megan and tried to enjoy it but I just couldn't.
And A Quiet Place did it better because their kids weren't little shits like that little shit was.

The first Horror Royal Rumble winner finally gets her due. I love how sassy M3GAN is, the robotic way she moves, and how uncannily creepy she looks. Jenna Davis and Amie Donald's combined performance as her is so good.

They're both so talented.

Chucky: MA-THREEE-GAN

Also, the four legged run is based on the most efficient running robots in our world!

The dance was perfect, it's an unexpected action, in the middle of a killing spree, and false sense of security. It just gives "I'm uncomfortable."
James‘ dance number was legitimately good.
Man, Amie Donald did an amazing job as Megan. Hope she returns for the sequel!
“Fuck off, Holly” caught me so off guard
I was expecting the "fuck off" i wasnt expecting the use of his moms real name
No matter how many times I tune in to this channel I can never get enough of that kickass room that James does the kill counts in, I just LOVE all those awesome props that are set in the background, I know that if I tried to have one of the rooms in MY house like my mother would probably think I was being childish
Be you, if you want your room to look like that then go for it, it’s not childish at all, it’s awesome! Never second guess what makes you happy
@@connershowers5855True?.
That's great. 👍🏾.
Fun fact: The dance was not in the original script. The film's director, Gerald Johnstone, came up with the idea on the spot.
That explains why it's such a bad scene

14:21 technically we reached the max speed we can get on two legs, but we can go faster if we use all 4. The time for best quad run is constantly going up with better training methods
I swear to god when M3GAN sang the song Titanium everyone in my theatre just bursted into laughter.

Poor Katie has been through too much. Dead parents, barely surviving an accident, barely cared for then being used by her aunt as a guinea pig, and then the dog bite. And it only gets scarier...
22:20 I had no idea a grown man could twirl so adorably, but my mind has been blown.

Just that line with Jame’s delivery makes me laugh so hard and I don’t know why 😂
The song that plays makes it even funnier.😂😂😂😂
This is a movie where the uncanny valley works perfectly to a movie's advantage because it's supposed to be creepy!
Haha, no
It sometimes looks like a real person and sometimes looks like an object and is fascinating to watch.

I am impressed with the work put into Megan, especially with the effects staff not just sticking with one means of portraying the character, allowing the gynoid to stay unnatural.
Zoran's impersonation of a Silicon Valley "visionary" tech bro CEO absolutely killed me. It killed me like I was that CEO and it was a murderous automata ...except, y'know, more joy-inducing.

The joke of having sound or music on one character and then the complete cut off when you cut to the other character is one of my favorite bits, like the miniature guys in Night at the Museum or the music in Zoran's ad here. I LOVE IT SO MUCH
Or that Stan Lee cameo in the amazing spiderman
That scene in the woods really shows the amount of time they put into making characters feel real, even side characters. They didn’t have the kid do anything explicit but you can tell he’s mimicking behaviors that happened to him. Even though it’s fictional and a movie, I still get that haunting feeling.
11:03-this is a scene no one seems to talk about, and yet, it might be a set up for M3GAN 2.0.

The Boston’s dynamic dog is even creepier when you realize what was once amazing and kinda dorky cute is now being used in to police the border and deployed in war. Kinda crazy how this movie nails the very real “terminator” concept that was only in movies until technology caught up.
