I love how Herbie and Pat give each other space. Guitarists and Pianists can sometimes struggle to play together though masters know when to drop out or play softly. I love this band more than life.
Tillery: Dave Holland continues to be one of the best jazz bassists. Hard to believe he's been playing jazz since the 1960s, challenging all the musicians and drummers he's performed with to play even better than they usually do.
I saw the same tour in Milan few weeks later, at that time I only knew Pat Metheny and Dave Holland cause I had a cd with Pat, Dave and Roy Haynes. After a couple of tunes I said WowI who's playing the piano? I remember some audience watched me saying Are you kidding?!? what the hell are you saying ,,, That concert changed my life ! I've had to tell you this for thirty years :)) Un saluto da Bergamo, Italy
THIS IS WHAT JAZZ MUSIC IS ALL ABOUT!!!!!!!! Musicians at the top of their game being propelled by a great dummer......thank you...thank you!!!!!thank you!!!! Students of this art form.....listen and learn.....this is your mountain top!!
These are titans at the top of their game. Dave Holland just killed on that solo and Pat is still playing his magical ES-175 with that satin-y pillow tone which he unfortunately moved away from some years later
Herbie Hancock and Jack De Johnette with Pat??? Why have I, a serious Metheny fan, never seen this before??? Herbie and Jack just killed it on this tune!!! Wonderful!
The combination of Herbie Hancock and Jack dejohnette at 4:12, they intuitively connected and it rings in my head every day. U don't get that often. Jack dejohnette's drumming is out of this world
Herbie Herbie he absolutely killed it (IMO). The way his solo developed and the tension he creates then of course Holland comes in and he smashed it. Sorry I forgot to mention they are all monsters 😅
I dreaming to see these guys together again. Specially Herbie and Pat is my favorite musicians. And this repertoire is good: 9 over reggae, cantaloupe island, indigo dreams, jack in ... I searched different concerts of this band, because I wanted to hear different solos of each melody. They are super great. Interesting, how these guys together will sound now.
Wow…this is high level. All four of them are playing so great. I especially like Jack D. with this rhythm section. He sounds very different than with the standards trio.
Wow, this Video reminds me of that OpenAir - Concert in Hamburg /Stadtpark where I saw these four fantastic musicians and the unforgotten Michael Brecker playing together ! I'm so grateful !
Robert Langer That show in Toronto was at Roy Thompson Hall. The tour was in support of their album Parallel Realities. What I remember best about that night was the other shows that was going to happen later in the night. Mike Stern at George's Spaghetti House & Eric Johnson at The El Macombo. I was fortunate to see this show and cabbed it to be in time for Eric Johnson. A night I will never forget.
Walking bass line performed in this is very comfortable for me. Furthermore, Pat metheny and Harbie hancock's improvisation is one of the best . Recently , I listen to this everyday. Thank you for uploading this.
Since this is Herbie Hancock's TH-cam channel, maybe he reads the comments? If you're reading this Herbie, get Pat on the phone and put this act (or something similar) back together! No reason why this "one time project" can't be done again! I'm sure many people would come and see it!
sir, thank you so much for everything that you have given to art and culture and, by extension, life... may love and light guide you and yours for all your days \m/\m/
Salvador, Bahia, Brasil. Escutando pela 1a vez em junho de 2020. É para ficar em transe com tanto talento executando esse tema do imortal do M. Davis. Bravoooo!
Granted, I miss the sound of Roy Haynes' drumming (he played on the CD, "Question & Answer), but despite that, this is one amazing live group and one amazing performance.
very well..........................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Reminds me of Tony William's drumming on The Sorcerer album. Appropriate considering Herbie. I even hear Herbie play some phrases I recognize from that album. That's cool, I guess in a way it's a slight homage to Miles Davis's memory since he made the tune his own, or so it's said.
@@gregkent8955 It's probably this one: www.amazon.com/Dejohnette-Hancock-Holland-Metheny-Concert/dp/B00004XOR4 I own a 2-DVD release of this band from the same tour called Parallel Realities (just like the Jack Dejohnette CD), but it's hard to find and expensivie.

Supernova band!! Just st unbelievable!
Totally agree. Great players listen more and care more about the sound of the band, versus how they sound individually.
I have so many experiences at gigs and jam sessions where the opposite happens and the two comp over each other. infuriating.
what about holland and jack
Guitar: Pat Metheny
Piano: Herbie Hancock
Bass: Dave Holland
Drums: Jack DeJohnette
Phillip Clay killer line up
Indeed!
Tillery Johnson, do you know Pat M. history? How he approached Gary Burton at 17 and ended up playing in his band. Yes, amazing band. Killers all
Michael Brickley I did not know that about Dave Holland thanks

Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette lock in so incredibly well!
Santi H they’d been playing together for 20 years already when this was filmed. Amazing, really!
Well they both trained together under the best with Miles.
@@icecreamforcrowhurst Indeed, see them together here in 1969: th-cam.com/video/ajjbtrASABI/w-d-xo.html
I don't think I have that recording. Steve Coleman is one of my favorite sax players so thanks for the tip.
herbie absolutely killing it...limitless imagination...
his coworkers have equally limitless imaginations too, esp that rhythm section!

That tone is truly amazing. Turned my head around from the first.
The best rhythm section, the best soloists all rolled into one.
Just what is needed in times like these!
four masters at work, what a performance. thanks god for giving us this beauty
Dave Holland's solo stands out!
this drumming is out of sight - wow!! so fluid
Dave Holland absolutely rips on this cut, incredible playing!
This was thirty years ago? Thirty years! Damn, where did the time go?
@David: I know .......

Dave Holland's solo is really musical and fabulous. Everyone on the band stand is great of course but to do that on Acoustic Bass is wonderful!
se puede apreciar la harmonia ausente en su desarrolo es magnifico!!!
Herbie Hancock and Jack De Johnette with Pat??? Why have I, a serious Metheny fan, never seen this before??? Herbie and Jack just killed it on this tune!!! Wonderful!
I have been listening to this great CD, Parallel Realities Live, since its release. And now I can see it. It's even greater. :-)
The musicianship of these four is amazing. Equally amazing is how seamlessly they blend together, as if they had been playing together for a decade.
bass solo is amazing
And concentration on Jacks face who is making effort to not lose the tempo, while Dave is flowing far far away, is also significant :D
Superb

The snippet from 4:32 to like 4:40 from all 3 is off the hook.. I thought they would mess up first time I heard.
Increible solo de Have Holland!!! grandiosos todos!!!
Una de las mejores versiones de Solar que escuché!!!! Excelente!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👌
Herbie Herbie he absolutely killed it (IMO). The way his solo developed and the tension he creates then of course Holland comes in and he smashed it. Sorry I forgot to mention they are all monsters 😅

Grande brano, eseguito magistralmente dalla band e da ogni singolo eccellente musicista che la compone. 🙂

They're playing so free and Pat's so "across the bar" at times that I really have to focus on the cymbal.
Oh man, this is damn musical!!! Enjoyment off the scale.😍💖
one of the best bass solos ever

Herbie going in, Dejohnette so musical, very bass solos listenable IMHO but Dave Holland is exception, Metheny what a tone
Pat had a real confident grinn on his face after first solo .... it was awesum

great rendition, would love to have seen this quartet, sounds like they have been playing together for years

Intresting
She is probably 70 or 80 years old
I want to marry pat metheny (i am straight, but want to hear him play live every day)
Can you imagine....30 years ago!!!!!
I like how Herbie starts out with a couple abbreviations of "the lick" lets just get this out of the way before I get wierd, he must've thought
Fan of everyone here. 5 minutes in, Herbie says step back, Pat:) Ideal rhythm section.
@Jeffrey Long I get it, yeah. I meant "step back" in a playful way. These are two masters. You're probably exactly right.

pat stopped chord backing during piano trio this was the highlight.
so pat guitar sound is beautiful
Normally, id be all over pat's solo here, but Herb's solo is PROFOUND here!
great!
Masterpiece
Talk about a super group!
Killer...
Some of Jack DeJohnette's sizzling drum breaks sound like a precursor to Keith Carlock's blazing tom & snare style...
Opinion Watcher I wouldn’t say “precursor to ” I’d say.....”Keith’s were influenced by....” Keith would probably say the same!!!

And a later Metheny collaborator, Antonio Sanchez. Sanchez used his left hand quite differently than De Jonhnette, but close your eyes and listen.
the way he sometimes hits the crash reminds me alot of the great Lars of Metallica, he was probably influenced by him.

David Holland on Bass, Jack DeJohnette on Drums.
No wonder Pat had to switch to Ibanez guitars. That poor guitar looks like it could disintegrate at any moment! It had a good run.
