Wow! That's some of the best back and forth I've ever heard. You can feel the mutual respect and admiration by two masters of their craft. That was a treat to watch!
I'd lost all hope that there would ever be a new guitarist that could touch me...take me away to another plane...like Al first did when I put the needle to the groove of Flight Over Rio in 1977 when I was a very young teenager. I'd stopped even listening to guitar music for the last decade or so - constantly disappointed with what I saw and heard. Then I saw Samba Party and Drop D on TH-cam and...well, I've come to believe there is hope that a guitar player can, again, make me feel like I'm soaring away on an aural journey - even if just for a few moments. My jaded old soul has been touched!
Matteo : An absolute talent; his improvisational ability is light years ahead. It would take two or three lifetimes. It was like when Jaco (Pastorius) came on the scene... how did he get so good and so fast..? Al Di Meola
Two things blew me away here: - The incredible musicianship (timing and execution!). I’ve followed Al since the early 70’s, seeing him many times with RTF. And, been an IG fan of Matteo for several years (incredible on electric with his groups/Italian compadres). - and, secondly… stunned by the number of people in an early audience cutaway, who were looking at their phones in their laps during an amazing rendition of Spain !! Beyond me - why were you even there people? Best to both of these amazing players👏😁
We would be hootin' and hollering..I too have seen Al in Buffalo, Tokyo and Mt.Fuji. Been following him since Ricky and Danny turned me on to The Jester in '75
I have been an Al di meola and Strunz and Farah fan for over 20 years. As brilliant and virtuosic as their music is, it is very unbalanced and chaotic at times. To someone who is new to their music this can seem like unrelenting runs especially with no singing or percusive accompaniment.
The more I see of Matteo Mancuso the more I realize that guitar isn't dead after all. I was worried after decades of not being blown away. My early influences were the likes of Nuno, Yngwie, Paul, Ritchie, Eddie, Randy, Paco, Frank, Al, John, Keith, John, Darrel and so on. (Yes, I picked up my first guitar in the 80-ies) And in the last ten years I have seen some great new players on youtube and Instagram, but for the most part they do not excite me much if at all. Matteo on the other hand.... Wow, just wow. If anyone is taking notes, then I will travel far to see him, Frank Gambale and Al Di Meola doing something akin to "Friday Night in San Fransisco", btw.... Or Matteo, Nuno and Marcus Miller (and his band) rocking out. (Just planting seeds and crossing all my fingers over here)
I love Maestro Di Meola's current place as elder statesman and ambassador of virtuosic guitar. He could not pick a better artist to highlight than Matteo Mancuso! I was looking at the mics and cables for both, and wondering if anyone else felt that Matteo's sound, as presented here, was more gentle, round and buttery than Al's. It is such a challenge to blend the signals of nylon string guitars on stage in this way. I love this performance!
Di Meola’s playing is tremendously accurate, precise, tasteful. But Mancuso’s is indeed on another planet, and maybe galaxy 😮 With all the possible respect for Al Di Meola, one of my favourite guitar players.

@@Dovith Mate, Dimeola is so far past his prime its painful to listen to. John Hates Al D and always has. Paco was a god among men, and on the nylon none of them did or will ever come close. I saw Al Di Meola in the 1970's in Portland OR with his band when he was touring with Weather Report, what a fantastic show! And now with my current favorite guitarist, the young Matteo Mancuso, musical genius!!!
During an interview a few years ago, Al Di Merola said he was impressed by a young Italian guitarist Matteo Mancuso, who played beautifully with an unusual technique, in a "clean and fast way" with his right hand fingers so well, without a pick. In this beautiful performance, Al appears happy and enthusiastic, Matteo trained, concentrated and excited...great Artists.
I'm not sure how much preparation went into this performance, but I wonder, in general, how many players could get up on stage with Al and perform that with the same amount of preparation. And then to think someone as young as Matteo got up there and nailed it... is amazing. What a talent! His album The Journey has been on steady rotation in my house since its release. I look forward to his future!
Incredibile!
Oh, no doubt. Matteo is the entirely new, next evolutionary step, just like Tosin Abasi or those guys from Polyphia are in rock, but it's beautiful to see all that mutual respect and appreciation.
Well, Matteo's playing with his fingers. Just that alone changes the character of his delivery and tone. if you use a pick, here's always going to be some string noise. Also, the sound of Al's guitar seems to have a little too much high end off the board; maybe it's preamp on the acoustic along with those mics surrounding him.
@@paoli91 Well, then..., that's even worse, because.., now watching the video again, I realize that the other guitar has a cable going somewhere into the board or an amp..., so..., you actually made my point stronger. Both played great, Al's guitar was was not very good.
With so many ‘torch burns’ happening by the machine it is great to witness this ‘torch passing’. It brings a smile to one’s heart. Many have no idea but I carried a cassette tape of Paco’s music with me on tour and played it when I was not on the bandstand through my Sony Walkman. Brings back such memories of his fire and precision. The idea of creativity and imagination being over may be true for those that buy into that nonsense. The flame continues to burn. 🎵🎶🔥

The fast stuff is always amazing but the slow solo's are just beyond crazy. Even though they improvise they still have to think where they wanna go and the selection of notes really bring a lot of flavour and colour to the music. Out of this world skills❤
"they still have to think where they wanna go": wrong! As said by Colaiuta in a Rick Beato podcast, (and lot of great musicians as Mancuso): "thought is the enemy of flow"...
Bravo to Matteo in a "field" that is not his own and truly complete, and bravo to Al, not only for his unparalleled artistic-musical maturation, but also for giving a wonderful opportunity to this young and great talent. This is the music that We like, is an "Us" to grow.
Paco was the greatest Flamenco guitarist to date, complex and unmatched genius and technique. To make comparisons is foolish and is to miss the beauty of enjoyment and confidence in growing talent. Al you have been my hero and inspiration for 50 years now with Mateo the guitar world is definitely in good hands. Thanks for all the years of amazing playing!!❤
Matteo, finally the world gets to hear how marvelous of a player you are . Bravo to you, and to Al Dimeola. A huge influence of mine and such a great player! Greetings form New Hartford Connecticut. (Ovation Guitar land)
Yes. I'm so glad they finally got together
The future of jazz guitar is in good hands.
the best al di meola duet I haven seen in years...!
Wonderful performance.... You have to give to Al, he's one of the best ever and he's taking his time to present and promote a young, relatively new Italian player coming along his lines and it's just really cool to see Al take the time to do this - not to mention, it's a smoking performance!!!

Both speaking the same language in harmony. That was a treat!
Grandi musicisti.
It's my hope that when people come across this that they remember the world is worth saving. Beautiful playing guys!
I'd like to add that so is music worth saving. The contemporary generation is missing out live music or even knowing of bands and their music/songs
Like a young Paco DeLucia up there. You can tell Al is in awe of the enormity of his talent and that is impressive in and of itself.
Yes I see Paco about him, great talent.
Matteo : An absolute talent; his improvisational ability is light years ahead.
It would take two or three lifetimes.
It was like when Jaco (Pastorius) came on the scene... how did he get so good and so fast..?
Al Di Meola
Two things blew me away here:
- The incredible musicianship (timing and execution!).
Maybe they were googlin Matteo immediately :-)
Yeah, I also found the audience utterly dull.
May be people don't care about guitar speed showcase. Perhaps music is too boring for some. Just playing scales over chord changes... who knows...
Al has so much class, talent, and standup rightness. He's one of my heroes.
(Just planting seeds and crossing all my fingers over here)
I think Al has found his new Paco.. great ensemble playing...
Right hand - pick vs. fingers.
Di Meola’s playing is tremendously accurate, precise, tasteful. But Mancuso’s is indeed on another planet, and maybe galaxy 😮 With all the possible respect for Al Di Meola, one of my favourite guitar players.
@@rgtacousticguitar-re3sh I think it’s quite obvious that Mancuso is a guitarist. Apart for that, I’m not agree with you.

One of the es most amazing things about Matteo is that he can play many styles and genres of music with virtuoso skills. Incredible!!!
because he has no style of his own
@@johndumoulin5808and Is this bad? For once I don't think so, Mancuso Is a machine, he Is becoming the standard or perfection.
@@oscardesignstudiosexactly that is a problem. Being a machine ss you described....to technical...
@@milosteof I think it'll come with experience. Like Paul Gilbert changed his style. His early shred work with Racer X is impressive, but I'll choose his later stuff without a second thought.
Matteo no style???!!..wish i had as little so!😂
Al and John McLaughlin need to take Matteo on the road for a new version of the guitar trio.
nah. That was something special. John Al and Paco were all in their prime. Matteo can form his own super trio with other current phenoms
@@TraderKing83 Yes I agree, he can, and I think he should. But it would be nice seeing him playing with Al, and John, because honestly, there are many guitar players that can sit and "fill" Paco's place; but personally I think that currently he is the only guitar player that can even surpass it.
@@Dovith Mate, Dimeola is so far past his prime its painful to listen to. John Hates Al D and always has. Paco was a god among men, and on the nylon none of them did or will ever come close. Paco, rest his soul was one in a billion and even though I think Mancuso is talented, they are like comparing apples to oranges. Matteo is good on the acoustic but he excels on electric and is more akin to guthrie or holdsworth. Paco at his peak was UNREAL.
@@TraderKing83 Agree, but my point is that for me it would nice to see the three of them playing together. I also think that Al has not come out with anything interesting for a long long long time. I find his solo álbums extremely boring except one or two.
Great idea. but John is 81 years old now and Al is 10 year younger, and poor paco has passed, maybe it’s time too pass the baton over to this guy he’s superb!!
I´m lost for words. We have a star and an incoming star. Can´t ask for more.
I saw Al Di Meola in the 1970's in Portland OR with his band when he was touring with Weather Report, what a fantastic show! And now with my current favorite guitarist, the young Matteo Mancuso, musical genius!!!
That is a great talented young man playing with Al Di Meola.
È la consacrazione definitiva di Matteo Mancuso. Diventerà il numero 1 al mondo
Al’s right hand comping is percussive, groovin’, and precise. Fantastic!
Two excellent musicians having a conversation. 😊🦅🎸
Incredibile!
I found Matteo’s tone sweeter. Al is a legend. Matteo is going places
It's hard to ever expect much from a nylon string true a pa with a crappy pickup system.. never sounds good. Plastic on plastic.
that has much to do with how the guitar is amplified
@@paoli91 Well, then..., that's even worse, because.., now watching the video again, I realize that the other guitar has a cable going somewhere into the board or an amp..., so..., you actually made my point stronger. Both played great, Al's guitar was was not very good.
You can tell how stoked Matteo was to be playing with Al DiMeola. That's wonderful.
Al , the guitar legend, di Meola surely played these songs more than 5000 times...that showcases the big talent of Matteo Mancuso...
Insane! Insanely, beautiful!! You could tell it was a challenge by Al and Matteo passed the test!

Amazing - one all fingers, the other alternate picking, and they work together so beautifully! I love this.
I love that Al has always brought great talent to the spotlight.

Now another Italian phenom comes along.
Kid is awesome 🥰
Bravo to Matteo in a "field" that is not his own and truly complete, and bravo to Al, not only for his unparalleled artistic-musical maturation, but also for giving a wonderful opportunity to this young and great talent. This is the music that We like, is an "Us" to grow.
Kid never gonna achieve 1% of Paco's magic. It's just TH-cam noodling, nothing more.
Paco was the greatest Flamenco guitarist to date, complex and unmatched genius and technique. To make comparisons is foolish and is to miss the beauty of enjoyment and confidence in growing talent.
Al did not invite Matteo Mancuso to expose him to a comparison but - as a mature musician - to give him a platform for further growth and stimulation. The "Us" of music grows with these measured and wise influences and proposals.
