- On this day in 2004 Brian Lara broke the World Record for the highest individual score in Test cricket, scoring 400 v England. Incredibly this was the second time he broke the record. He scored 375 against the same opponents, on the same ground, 10 years earlier! Matthew Hayden briefly held the record after scoring 380 v Zimbabwe in 2003 before Lara regained the record.

If you look back in hindsight, this innings is not just a record, but also shows the grit and determination of a cricketer. Playing more than 550 balls, for consecutive days, goes on to show how mentally strong you have to be, to achieve this level of greatness in the career. Even after nearly 2 decades, this record remains unscathed, untouched. Whatever the result of that match, or the series, you remember the record ultimately and the name associated with it. You are, were and will be, one of the majestic players of cricket, Brian Charles Lara. Players like you, made the cricket reach heights.
Not to mention physically strong. It takes immense strength and fitness to do something like this.
Not to mention he was a cheat because he was out and should have walked
@@darshanaratnayake6186 you cannot call him a cheat, what are umpires for? They are there for making decisions, if he has told not out, he has every right to stand in the ground
In today's gen, no one will score 400 because of the cut throat competition in test cricket, evry1 declares after getting 500 or more

Someone people say Lara should have declared and gone for the Win.
If you compare which would have hurt England more... Would it be a Win against England or A world record and make england toil on the field for over 2 days.
I think the world record that is spoken even today, and a win would have been long forgotten today.
If West Indies would have won that match had lara declared scoring 200,,, you and me would not even remember that win now... But that recordning breaking innings even now we remember.
This Record was equavalent of a series win thats the happiness we could see on people's faces.
you are right buddy.
Well....so..at that time on the field was Lara playing for the world record individual score to remember after years or was he playing to win the game for his country?
Which is more important? What do you think?
@@CA.Subhankar_Bagchi You are True but he is not Wrong either ! Nowadays because of WTC, winning a test match has become important while at that time, test matches were more like a place where you can grind your skills as a player and test your limit and it wasn't very much about win but more about individual performances and great spells/innings, that's why if this match was happening today, they must have declared after Lara's 300 to win it but they kept going and match was drawn.
@@RR_theproahole WTC brought test cricket watchable
@@arunjose9046 Not true, Test cricket was much more enjoyable in the 2000s. It was also even more watched too. Just see any test match by india during 2000s and compare it to present day tests matches the difference of media coverage and crowd attending the match is abysmal. Back then stadium used to be full in test matches. Nowadays tests take place in small stadiums with very less audience. Also, back then there used to be much better bowling McGrath, Warne,Gillespi, Wasim,Waqar, Shoaib, Asif,Donald, Pollock, kluslener, Ntini, Steyn,Kumble. All legends used to bowl really great. Also batting was much more competent as well. Nowadays only watching England's test are delight all other countries look really pale and the matches feel no different than ODIs.
Wow aleem dar was the umpire.

even as an england fan this is such a treat to watch
I saw this with my Dad in 2004......
Saw the '94 one, too.....
Even I saw this with my father, actually, it was exam time was busy in my room studying, my father was watching in the drawing room & was aware that I was a huge Brian Lara fan, Lara was batting at 325 when he called me saying "Lara is all set to retain his test record" Great memories

Absolutely unbelievable. It's such a golden age of Cricket the 90s and 2000s. Biggest and best names of cricket bar none.
Still remember that innings. I was so small and had just started playing and watching cricket
that was the best era for test cricket...we had seen many 600+ scores ...but now its rare that any team cross 400 runs
Test pitches are result oriented these days
Now a days its more entertaining to watch test matches rather than preivous time ...
@@oneminus1063 I think test was much more enjoyable back then. There were tons of runs scored but also the bowlers used to take so many wickets. So many legendary bowlers with more than 500+ wickets have been in 90s and 2000s era. After that the bowling really declined. No unique records were made etc. It doesn't feel any different than ODIs. Only England's test cricket remains the same as before. Scoring tons and tons of runs and also bowling greats ( Anderson, broad) still taking many wickets.
This video really blessed to watch.... throw back to my memories

Certainly the highest. But best? Drawn game, flat pitch. 50 on a foul pitch to save a game when noone else scores more than ten is a very good innings.
