    Coarse edge is so great for a lasting working edge... Thumbnail test is tried and true. I learned about that test when i learned how to sharpen straight razors.

    Any time I sharpen my knives I have found I do a better job of sharpening when I hold the knife still and move the stone or rod that I'm using. It might not work with a lot of people but it works best for me. I can maintain my angle properly a lot better that way.

    Seems diamond/ceramic/steel rods work best for these kind of multiple grind knives. I have prepared hell of an arsenal of them in many grits and sizes.
    And since I make my own strops I will prepare a strop rod wrapping leather around a 1 inch diameter oval/round stick. It should be first of its kind :D

    Great sharpening and edge information. I watched you describe sharpening, probably about the time time you came out with the master Woodsman and the multi grind edge. How the secondary edge, the cutting edge was simple to sharpen. I've used your advice to sharpen my Emerson Commander with the recurved blade. I never get it hair popp'in sharp but its sharp enough to nick me if i don't respect it.

    I uses Spyderco rods. And I learn to use free hand. And I practice on a letter opener. It can get into the narrow portion of the blade. Have diamond rod. But I find the grit too course. I usually touch up, not reprofile. Mini steel works great with O1. Lots of people says it doesn't work. But works with O1 and AUS8 steel. Not sure if the mini steel can work on super steel like Rex121. I think ceramic rods and mini steel is good enough for me. Got to save and not getting fancy electrical sharpening tools.

    • @wcknives
      @wcknives  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mini steel isn't for sharpening. It is to hone the edge. It hones the edges on my CPM steels just fine. Even the 3V. You have to keep your edges maintained thoughand not let them get dull.

    • @wcknives
      @wcknives  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is true Shannon.

    • @wcknives
      @wcknives  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      shannonandsheila1 anytime you sharpen or hone a knife edge you either remove metals or straighten it. Now anything that will dull a knife will also sharpen a knife. Saying that straightening a edge that is bent or roles will weaken the edge is true but for only the portion that is rolled and should be removed. If the edge is warped then there is a heat treat problem. Butcher steels are usually smooth steels and do as you say and only straighten the edge but the mini steel in this video has ridges and it will remove the rolled edge and add the micro teeth I was talking about in the end of this video.

    • @wcknives
      @wcknives  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      shannonandsheila1 I think I agreed with that a comment or two above. The ridges of the steel realigns the teeth and it will remove the wire edge. It may fold it back and forth until it is removed but it will be removed and realign the teeth. The butcher steel or smooth steel only polishes the edge and does not give the edge teeth. Now if the steel is harder than the blade it will remove steel from the blade and the vitronox steels are harder than most carbon steel blades so yes on some knives it removes steel from the blade.

    • @wcknives
      @wcknives  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      shannonandsheila1 LOL, a file would disagree with your argument. If the steel has ridges like the Victronix and is harder than the knife blade it will remove material.

    Will wet dry sandpaper on glass suffice? I rarely use a knife for anything that requires more than a strop to put the razor back in it

    • @wcknives
      @wcknives  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It will but the methods demonstrated is recommended. Striping over time will convex the edge. For a time this will work but the edge will become less effective as a slicer or cutter due to the secondary apex thickness changes. A sharpening stone will maintain the secondary apex and be a more effective cutter or slicer. See my videos on edge apexes.
