    Great review and great knife
    If anyone is interested in this and the sheath bothers you, you can snug up those flap by the heatgun method OR by putting a hole through both on ONE (blade or spine) and tightening it up with some lockwire. Basically just increase the tension via wire a bit higher up the flaps, it would take some playing with but totally doable.

  • @Roger-ok1bn
    @Roger-ok1bn ปีที่แล้ว +17

    I figured out the kydex rattle trick. You have to slide the knife into the sheath very straight, for me almost like keeping the knife lined up on the cutting side of the knife, then it'll click into the sheath without any rattle or what so ever(the knife is totally locked in and no need to use the snap loop). I'm not sure if it is purposely disigned like this, but at least it's my case. For those who don't know what to do i might be able to help.

    I have seen so much negativity about this knife, and it has been frustrating to read. The sheath point is very fair, but people modify sheaths or order custom ones all the time anyway. I think a lot of people don't actually use knives they talk about and, therefore, can't recognize innovation and "near perfection" when it is in front of them. The planning that went into this product is applaudable and one of the best knives ZT has produced in years. Hands down one of the best multi-purpose fixed blades on the market. If the stock sheath is stopping you from buying this, you weren't going to buy it anyway.

    • @NavySooner
      @NavySooner ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ZT is a knife company not a sheath company. KnIves that come with nice sheaths usually have them made by other companies and the price is made higher because of it. Almost every sheath that comes with a knife out of the box has downfalls. There is more than likely a kydex gun holster maker near you that will make you a better sheath to specifications you want. not to mention are you so technically inclined that you need to have the sheath Attached upside down without the button on it?

    Hi All,
    I just purchased the blacked-out version of this knife (a bit newer than the OD green version). The sheath retention is perfect. In fact, I cannot shake it loose even with over-the-top upside-down shaking and it will not come out of the sheath except by pushing my thumb against the sheath separation to open it up. Not sure if it is a one-off or if they have updated the retention quality assurance? My only preliminary worry about the sheath is the knife rattle. Minor issue for me but we will see what the results are in the field.
    Arrived with a fantastic edge and despite holding off on the purchase for almost a year (the knife is bigger than I like and was iffy on the $$$) - I am happy with the initial quality. It will start its bush live late this week.
    Keep up the good work on testing the fixed blades in field conditions. Thats what it is all about.

  • @af22raptor23503

    Nice looking blade that is on my list to get this year. Getting an aftermarket Kydex or leather sheath that is properly adjusted would be a pain because is going to be a custom job so it is probably going to cost at least 120-200 dollars making the price of the combo almost 500 dollars. That is allot of money for a knife that should have come with the proper sheath to begin with. I recently ordered the Pohl Force Quebec Two and new Tactical Eight BK which are made in Germany and are designed by Dietmar Pohl whose attention to the small details like very tight Kydex Sheath that are done in-house at his factory and his blades are all done in house as well really IMPRESSED me for the price point.
    I like to collect and use Military and Survival knives that I keep in my Jeep when out on the trails and also keep them attached to my Tactical Gear while training since that was a major part of my life when I was in the Military. I really do wish that I had the access to a couple of good friends that are still active duty and are stationed overseas at the moment who were Kydex and Tactical Nylon Wizards and could manufacture a complete Tactical Vest or Plate Carrier in a matter of 2-3 hours depending on how complex or how many beers they were drinking while sewing.

    Good looking knife, a better kydex sheath is warranted.
    For clarification:
    This is a combat knife - a general purpose knife, and not a fighting knife, yes it could be used as a fighter but it is not designed to be a fighting knife.
    A classic example of a fighter would be original Bowie knives, like Sheffield pattern blades, or a Randall model 1 fighter or a RMK model 2 stiletto.
    The biggest difference between fighting and g.p. knives is that fighters need to be lively in the hand, vs heavy duty / general purpose use like the TOPS.
    Except for the sheath, that knife will make a good general purpose knife. Albeit the upper guard will interfere with some tasks.
    IMHO, there are less expensive options that will serve the same purpose; i.e. an ESEE 6.

  • @haveaknifeday
    @haveaknifeday ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I have to agree about the sheath, it misses the boat. Also, I tend to wear my shirts untucked so the snap on the nylon belt loop is set too high. I could remove it and drop it lower, which might solve some of the retention issues but I Dont want to have to modify something that I just purchased or feel that I have to upgrade the whole sheath itself. This knife also looks like it could receive a bayonet ring on it and it’d be right at home on the end of an AR platform. So this is not a priority though it is an attractive Knife.

    • @loyalegroup3929
      @loyalegroup3929 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This makes complete sense, as I believe that the design is somewhat based on the (discontinued?) ZT-9 bayonet, which I believe was about an inch or two longer. I'm gonna' wager that, when they offered the bayonet, ZT probably had a bunch of their diehards suggesting/requesting that they build a "combat"-style fixie in a similar configuration...although I don't know for sure if that's the case.

    Looks like a really great knife, but a complete miss on the sheath, and for the money, the sheath should stand out in performance as well. Great review, as always! This crossover between survival and combat is always an interesting niche for me, and many manufacturers struggle with it, but this ZT blade looks to be well done. If I wouldn't have to pay for a custom sheath to run it, I might consider it for $320, but not with a rattling, 0 retention kydex sleeve essentially.

    • @pubplays368

      Its quite frankly a disgrace. Allowing a product out the door with this issue implies a lack of competence or caring or possibly both. It would be bad enough on a $20 ebay knife but at this price point it should be withdrawn until the issue is addressed. Fanboys in the community are giving these players way too much of a pass and these issues are continually popping up these days. Zero Tolerance should be 0.1 Tolerance.

      ZT, the more I have used knives the handle on the silent hero is too thin for my taste and the blade on this ZT is crazy good. But the silent hero is still excellent. Just knowing what I do know of both I could get about the same work done with either and better edge retention.

    Looks like a great knife, but the handle could be a bit more ergonomic. A hole for a lanyard or some kind of swell at the pommel that would help keep the knife in the hand during a combat situation. Great video! P.S. Was there a suitable place to strike a firesteel? The spine looks pretty smooth. : )

    So what if the little screw and nut securing the pommel is compromised and the knife is discontinued? Is that some kind of standard part? Seems like much integrity relies on that one screw and nut. It is stripped and the pommel does not stay on and the guard potentially loosens.

    Dang it! 2 things are killing me about this and keeping me from purchasing. 1st.. Is it a choil or not?! I cringe up so hard when I see these half-ass choils. Make it a dedicated finger hold or add more cutting edge otherwise it’s a waste of space. 2nd.. No 90 spine is robbing so much fire craft and wood processing functionality just for “comfort”?.. Aaaaand (I know I said 2 things but here’s a 3rd;) lastly, I prefer a small area of exposed pommel (further processing or “forehead contouring” 😆) .. Does it replace my Tops Desert Nomad? 🤷‍♂️.. Thanks for hearing my rant!

    I got one and this vid influenced the decison. I think this vid hits all the accurate points of the knife. My only thought is the blade may be a tad thin on the survival side. Maybe the 3V steel going to make up for that, not sure. It's a good slicer, cutter, etc, but I'd be worried about any prying and hard use. There's always a trade off with any design, and maybe I'm just attracted to the "pry bar with a point" type survival/camp/bush craft knives. I hope to take it on a camping trip soon.
