Thangalaan is a visually striking film that captures the raw beauty and harshness of the Kolar gold fields. Vikram delivers a career-defining performance as Tangalan, embodying the character with raw intensity. The film delves deep into the oppressive social structures of the time, sparking thought-provoking questions about power and exploitation. A unique blend of historical fiction, fantasy, and action creates a captivating cinematic experience. While the pacing might lag in certain parts, the film's overall boldness and ambition leave a lasting impression. It's a significant cinematic achievement that deserves recognition. Immersive and powerful, Thangalaan is a testament to director P. Ranjith's vision and Vikram's transformative talent.

I think it is very important understand the focus of the filmmaker. The comparison between Dhanush’s son’s death and Vikram’s child’s death doesnt make a lot of sense because in Asuran that death means soo much to the film and the eventual consequences in the film and in Thangalaan it is an event that happens in a larger scheme of things without major consequences and as an audience I dont think you are required to feel what Vikram and fam feel but just witness it from a distance and feel sorry for their plight.

Pasupathy alone has an arc? The other guy and his wife die separately fighting for gold which the wife wanted for no reason! Thangalaan believes land is freedom FROM his IDENTITY, then the money/gold is freedom from IDENTITY! Then realizes OWNING UP to HIS IDENTITY IS THE ONLY TRUE FREEDOM! You are also missing out on the Migrant Labour angle that is depicted along with the Indigenous tribe angle! These are internationally relatable themes! So many migrants who are ill treated will relate to the emotions that Thangalaan feels! I think the anger directed at u is more a disappointment that someone who has created a great sense of film appreciation is actually choosing to not delve deep enough when a complex enough work comes forward!!

impressive review I felt the same way watching the movie, But we only had one move which had same genre as thangalaan which is airathil oruvan, I would appreciate a comparison video about these two move. Cause I watched Ayirathil oruvan when i was 14 and I enjoyed the movie bought a vcd watched it over an over. Everytime I watched it I learned a new thing that I didn't notice early. Thats when my obsession over tamil history began, the flashback portions at the beginning of the when pandyas invaded and a chola prince was secured from the country. I can talk many things about ayrathil oruvan cause that had so much detailing. Best character development, proper magical realism that kept us in the edge of seat. I was expecting the same from Thangalaan but something was missing maybe because of the long story cut short maybe too much cuts in editing.
Thangalaan is the finest movie watched in recent times after the Dunki. The Thangalaan team had put lot of efforts and performed so well. Award Deserving. Malvika's role is great and unforgettable .
"People don't have any personal vendetta against Ranjith" - BR This guy is in another world. He doesn't understand any history or news, but still talks about 'emotional connect'. And always push the onus of make audience understand the ideology on the creators. Ranjith once said in an BR interview "As a creator I've the freedom to choose how I express my stories". The onus is not with creators nor with audience baddy. The audience(each one) choose to see & understand what he he/she wants to. Period. Wish Critics knows more about social structure, history and news.
Baradwaj can’t understand the story woven from oppressed castes . He only goes with populistic notions. It’s time to dump Baradwaj like Blue Sattai maran
The story was very incoherent, that was the only complaint. It had excellent plot points, characters and Vikram basically lived the character! I feel all these movies this year have superb ideas and one liners but they fail to deliver exactly what they intend to.
I can't understand why Tamil audiences are so insecure. A review is a personal opinion I could have a different opinion about a film baddy could have a different opinion. Just because you liked Thangalan it isn't a requirement for everyone to like it. Baddy praised Pa.ranjith last film Natchathiram Nagargiradhu as fine work of Pa. ranjith but it completely doesn't work for me. For that question baddy opinion is won't be right. Thangalan was mediocre in many reviewers view especially for me Dialogue are subdued by Music to point of even what Vikram said wasn't clearly audible.
If you give a good movie the wrong kind of review, people will not accept it. Thus, take a close look at the film; it is a highly entertaining historical drama for Indian cinema. People in the eighteenth century did not portray pain in such a profound way, and the filmmaker authentically depicted the range of emotions....Mr. Baddy reviews what the audience could also agree to...Guys, you really should watch this movie. It is a great educational film that you should not miss....Mr.Baddy please give proper review....Thangalaan is 9/10?This film deserves a national award.

I watched thangalan on 2nd day with full audience. The movie started and goes well until the point where they go for gold hunting. Post to that i felt like i was watching a similar scene which i saw while thangalan was telling story to his kids. The scenes didnt unfold the dream in detail also. It gets more confusing and all over the place. The scene happened near thangalans house with people are more like a stage drama, i could hear camera, rolling, action and cut back in my mind. Yes I couldn't understand the symbolism in the movie. But watching a movie or reading a book is to understand/learn something that we dont know and it is director's/author's responsibility to put it in that way. Nowaday if you say something and others dont get it, you feel genius about yourself. I sat in the theatre disengaged, trying to find a hold to travel alone with, throughout the movie. Alsi i found the audience were noise talking to each other in most of the emotional scene. When i come out of theatre i thought what an effort put by vikram. It was simply awe. Thats it. How i understood the movie:- The people who protect their lands natural resources are native tamil people. Vikram was one of them later being changed by time but the feeling was always there within him. And al last he chose a path for the present situation.
I think Ranjith has evolved has one of the finest film maker but he has to improve on his logical pursue of a historical story. Not to mix fantasy with history especially conveying a painful history!
Subtitles have been added since Day 2! I was able to connect with the words blurted out by Vikram when he had the vision thanks to the subtitles! If you had watched the movie on Day 1, watching with the subtitles makes it a bit more clear!
7:23 I have to disagree with you on this Baddy! I agree that the emotional connect was not clicking always and the inconsistency in mood could be seen in many scenes towards the later parts of the movie especially. Here are a few that I observed though: a) The way the movie drags on a bit as they get frustrated with not finding gold, I feel, was instrumental towards establishing the final act where we got the full blown magical realism of the embodiment of Thangalaan as a spirit of the oppressed. b) "Show, not tell" and thats what the film executes perfectly. It is a good payoff long term for the movie which will allow for more revisits to this future cult classic of a movie. Therefore, no "spoonfeeding" is going to help, which was a faulty and pretty lousy thing we've seen with yesteryear outings in tamil cinema when it comes to period settings. (ex: 7am arivu)
my answer to one of the question- not able to connect with local history because we dont see the victims as they are one of them because of the social structure in our society or we dont know the dalit issue
the theme of the thangalan is not the issue, it is the making pattern which is filled with boring scenes and unnecessary lags.... just look out J2, karthik conveyed the oppression faced by the community in a well crafted and engaging manner....
In a nutshell good acting, music, visual effects completely wasted by a weak/missing storyline by Ranjth. Hopefully he continues cover these topics of historical oppression in the future but packs it with a better story!
Im bored of generic storylines even though they are well written, As a general audience I would love to watch a film that facinates, I was expecting thangalaan a lot because it had the potential. If the movie slow paced gave the time for the audience to feel the emotion understand the situation this movie would also be great. We had a great man Selvaraghavan for making those kinda movies.
Good review sir, Ranjith made you to talk about this movie too much.....that's his success i believe....he always looks for debate of his message which he says through his movies....Pa. Ranjith knew all you said things still he wants to keep a dot for people to draw lines from it....now you are sitting in front of the camera and doing it....
Disclaimer I am not Ranjith and anyone's Fan. I kind of disagree with you. The screen play has layers and it is very much consistent and complete w.r.t Ranjith's political view, ideology and exploitation of certain community by land lords , britishers and past rulers This movie story is simple, There is a battle between Buddhism and vedic domination going for generations, People who accepted Buddhism are subjugated over a period of time through power . Oppressed caste potrayed as descedants of nagas ( believed to be indegenous people of india as per ambedkar)is divided over a period of time and director wanted to say that they have to consolidate and wait against the enemy for what they lost long ago .. Whole gold hunt thing etc is just a layer or metaphor....He potrays Buddhism as a gold which need to be saved from vedic domination or influence
Mr Rangan is spot on.. The hard work of the Actors n Music by GV are the highlight. But unlike Bala's Paradesi where the last one line made our stomaches turn in pity of the slaves..he there is not much impact . Entertaining in parts but just not engaging.

Therefore, no "spoonfeeding" is going to help, which was a faulty and pretty lousy thing we've seen with yesteryear outings in tamil cinema when it comes to period settings. (ex: 7am arivu)
Good move 🔥👌🔥👌🔥
my answer to one of the question- not able to connect with local history because we dont see the victims as they are one of them because of the social structure in our society or we dont know the dalit issue
Watch movie first then review bro 😅😅😅😅
the theme of the thangalan is not the issue, it is the making pattern which is filled with boring scenes and unnecessary lags....
just look out J2, karthik conveyed the oppression faced by the community in a well crafted and engaging manner....
In a nutshell good acting, music, visual effects completely wasted by a weak/missing storyline by Ranjth.
Hopefully he continues cover these topics of historical oppression in the future but packs it with a better story!
Thalaivareyyy, where's Demonte Colony 2 review? 😡😭
❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉

The screen play has layers and it is very much consistent and complete w.r.t Ranjith's political view, ideology and exploitation of certain community by land lords , britishers and past rulers
This movie story is simple, There is a battle between Buddhism and vedic domination going for generations, People who accepted Buddhism are subjugated over a period of time through power .
Poor editing... Did not shows the movie poster Or book picture when BR referencing...
Mr Rangan is spot on..
The hard work of the Actors n Music by GV are the highlight. But unlike Bala's Paradesi where the last one line made our stomaches turn in pity of the slaves..he there is not much impact .
Entertaining in parts but just not engaging.
Adi bagarama vangiruparu pola
University blast thangalaan
I like how you made "his stories" sounds like "histories" at 6:52
