  • Rig walkaround with @lizzy_kates 2013 2door Toyota Tacoma 4x4, 2.7 4 cylinder engine manual transmission. A unique small truck overland build. She talks about what features are on it, the gear she runs, & why. This isn't just a truck for driving forest roads. It has run trails in Moab including Hells Revenge and Fins and Things, climbed Colorado trails up to 13K ft, and run miles and miles and miles of dirt roads.

    Partial Dictation:
    This is my Tacoma let's check it out. CBI steel front bumper has been fantastic and fits a 30 inch light bar, Rigid Sr series. A Warn 8000 winch. This truck is a very basic 4x4 it has, Nothing: open diffs,no Atrack or lockers. It's fun because it's a lightweight, short-wheelbase rig.
    In the torpedo tubes, Rigid DOT Amber daytime driving lights. I use these all the time. I get asked if the grill is a wrap and the answer is no. I hand-painted it, so this is a one-of-a-kind job.
    Suspension: Total Chaos upper control arms and Elka DC series 2.5 adjustable Shocks and springs, front and rear with DuroBump Active bump stops.
    Toyo Open Country MT's 55x85-R16’s. A little taller and narrower tire with basic black steelie wheels, they look great and have that retro feel.
    Regular cab Tacoma owners out there. The wheelbase is pretty much the same as the Jeep JKU. These are Jeep JK sliders that we had welded on
    I put a hard shell on it. I deal with a lot of weather, so I prefer having the hard shell with the open side hatch windows. You can sleep with two people and three dogs. We have done it, (For 5 weeks!) it’s definitely a little cozy. We built a platform with access below, these opening side access hatches, and 5 inch thick cushions. We've got twinkly lights. I made curtains. It's comfortable and cozy. I have a 12v heated blanket from the secondary battery, Ctek, and solar if I'm stationary.
    I am running a Prinsu rack with Roam case. I keep my recovery gear here and frees up a bunch of inside space.
    Inside I’ve got a few light switches, front ambers, light bar, & the rear lights because I can get to them really quickly. I also have a charging port for iphone & ram mount. Then we've got a Garmin Tread nav unit. It allows me to track where I’m going and drop bread crumbs and find campsites. It also works with my power switch, under the hood I have a Bluetooth-controlled unit with my roof lights, ditch lights, blue backlights, and rock lights. It also has a trail ride feature where you can communicate with anyone else who has one and also shows the group ride.
    Check out my rear seat delete. I added truck bed mesh to the entire backspace to organize. I've got my tool bag, step 22 Pangolin, airup tools, extra paper maps, axe, rain gear, jackets, warm gear, and a hammock. This is where we installed our Midland GMRS radio.
    We've got a hi-vis overland awning. I can open this and close it by myself
    I have a steel bumper it’s not high clearance, I didn't think I needed it with my wheelbase. I decided to put on the Rigd tire gate, this allows me to carry my rotopax and 4 gallons of extra fuel.
    I am running the last US bag companies tire storage bag. We've put chairs trash and GoTreads inside it, it holds up really well. The lights on the rack are Rigid trail lights, these strobe to be seen through dust. I also have the Garmin backup camera, this is Bluetooth and this ties in with my Garmin unit that I'm running in the cab. The field of view is fantastic.
    This is where I sleep. I have the relentless fabrication steel tailgate cover. It’s a great surface. I have my platform, and we've built a center drawer that is just manpowered. I have a GasOne single burner stove that runs off either green propane cans or butane fuel. It's screwed down to a built-in platform where I've got pots and pans underneath, everything has a place. I've got dry goods and seasonings etc behind it. I love that I can get to camp, the stove is ready and I just start cooking. I always keep this step 22 Stingray back here full of extra dry goods, 2 camp chairs and dog food bin, and dog stuff. Everything fits. I am running a Dometic CX35 fridge. It's a good size for me and for my truck.
    My water storage solution is a Lifesaver 5 gallon Jerry. This filters the water so we've been able to get water from lakes, rivers, or questionable RV parks in the middle of nowhere. It’s small, it’s not for everybody, but I love it, thanks for checking out my rig, and see you on the trails.

    Can’t even express how much this stoked me out seeing your reg cab build. Everyone is building a four door, I also have a 2013 reg cab also in the metallic grey lol. 3 inch lift with 285’s and the same CBI bumper with a smitty 10k winch. Seeing a finished build of our little tacos is awesome and has inspired me to finish my build. Reg Cab 4cyl. For the win!

    I think this is the only built regular cab taco on the internet. Why?! It’s the best platform! After running The Rubicon Trail last year in my JLUR on 35’s, along with a buddy in a first gen Taco on 33’s with only a rear locker, I re-evaluated what makes a great wheeling rig. My buddy just bounced and clawed his way over everything. I concluded lighter is better. Even accounting for IFS Vs Solid front axle. Fast forward, I now have a 2012 Taco regular cab 4 cyl. Manual on 33’s and I’m re-gearing and adding lockers. Stoked to see what this bad boy will do.

    Thank you for the video it really helps to see what other people have done with the rigs. I have a 2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD pro which I am slowly turning into an overland vehicle. My truck being a four-door Offers me a little bit more space but it is my daily driver too. But the wheelbase is longer so it won’t go down the trails quite as easily as yours. Interesting choice with the steel wheel rims most people all go Ally now, as their stronger however steel rims can be bent back into shape on like alloy rims so it allows you to fix the situation on the trail I guess. Kind of did something like yours with the drawers however I went with the decked system. Not quite as creative as you but it is a nice storage system. I too went for a canopy on my truck I went with a different option I’ll chose the RSI EVO smart cap. It’s an expensive cap to go with, however I really do love what I’m getting for the money. Like yours the cap Opens on all sides however on the sides there are little windows I can open and do not have to open the entire gull-wing door. The Cap is weatherproof can hold 330lb when driving down the road and 770lb when parked perfect for supporting a rooftop tent. The cap is made out of stainless automotive steel with really nice lines and designs it also has a negative air pressure valve on the top so when you drive down the road it pushes air in creates a vacuum bubble which prevents any forms of dust coming up through the wheel wells or tailgate and I have to say I absolutely love that. With the RSI cap there are other options you can add to it . I went with the smart table which fits up in the roof Undo the latch it drops down and then slides out and you have a table you don’t have to dig around looking for it I do like that. I also have the smart roof rack there are two locks on one side that I can undo the rack slides out and then drops down so I don’t even have to climb up onto the roof to get to my gear. I have a prinsu rack on the front. Bought some recovery gear but that’s pretty much as far along as I’ve gotten long way to go. Still got to do all sorts of lights saving up for a fridge want to do steel front and rear bumper need a winch need to get a good navigational system ,two way radio fully equipped kitchen and first aid kit of course I have a little one but it’s only for a little cuts and scrapes. I have a decent suspension but I want to upgrade to something better I would absolutely love to put a long distance fuel tank like what the Australians use. where it’s underneath the truck I wish the Aussies had Toyota Tacoma‘s I would ship over one of their long-distance fuel tanks but unfortunately that truck is not available in Oz. Maybe a high clearance pump with swing arms so I could hang my spare wheel on the back like you have done. So lots to do and miles to go before I sleep and miles to go before I sleep ( Robert frost ) . Sorry for yammering on at home with a busted knee plenty of time watching lots of TH-cam LOL.

    Very impressive, you seem like a real veteran with a serious set up. I'm just getting into the over landing/Van thing myself but I love building stuff. I'm just finishing my 4runner build and gonna christen it by going camping and to the adventure show in Tennessee next month. My van should be in next February so I will have a serious over landing rig and the Van for less aggressive trips with a bit more comfort.

    That's awesome, I also have a 2013 Taco regular cab, 5 speed manual and just last Friday 05/13 I reached the 50,000 miles mark on my truck. The only biggest change that I have done so far was replace my bench seat with pocket seats from a 2015 Takoma, also because my truck is the base version too I did change the two speed windshield wiper control with the multi timer speed control. Keep up with the great upgrade and mods added on your little Taco and Happy Trails adventures...

    i have the same truck. 97 automatic, manual hubs, bucket seats(highly recommend this mod), 4.10 gears, i have a highroof shell though and I would recommend this and the windoors with the mesh. This girl is so cool. I want to run 33 ko2’s with my 15” aluminum wheels but idk if its gonna be to heavy. I have 31x10.5 ko2’s and its great now. I dont know if I even need 33’s i honestly dont, but they look cooler forsure. I also have the arb rear locker, so worth it, game changer.

      There's something I love about the bench seat. We did the lean back mod so it lays back further and that was a game-changer for the space. Maybe I start making custom hand-painted grills someday? Hmm, not a bad idea you have there. ARB rear locker is for sure the next major mod!

    Your truck is perfect. Regular cab short bed midsize pickups are extremely underrated these days with all of the hoopla over the crew cab configuration. From my experience, the combination of the regular cabs short wheelbase and the longer 6 foot bed trumps a crew cab with tiny bed any day. Most say the regular cab configuration doesn't have enough storage space but I say it has more storage space where it counts, in the bed. I've searched years for a 2 door Tacoma like yours, found a few, but price is always more than I'm willing to pay, so I'll be sticking with my '95 S10 ZR2 regular cab short bed for now.

    When you added the lift on the rear suspension did you have to modify the angle of the drive shaft? If so how was it done? The regular cab uses a single shaft unlike the the crew cab that has a carrier center bearing that a spacer can be used to drop the angle.
    Also a link to the sliders would be nice. And to the camper roof rack with lights. Thanks. Beautiful build BTW.

    • @ouroverlandlife5440
      @ouroverlandlife5440  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks much. As of yet we did not have to adjust the angle of the rear shaft. The single does the trick. We did wear out a U-bolt but that was around 110K miles and we have been to go ever since.
      Saldy the company that made the sliders was RPM fab. They have since gone out of business. But, the trick is find a shop that makes sliders for a Jeep JKU, have them modify the attachment points and they will fit. That's what RPM fab did for us.
      The camper rack is made by Prinsu. It has been holding up great! the lights are Rigid industries 6" 360 series.
      Thanks!

      Not yet, it has factory 4:10 gears and we hope to regear to 4:56 someday and add a rear locker. But for now she scoots along just fine. We're not really in a hurry.

    Sweet truck! What rear suspension are you running? Did you do an upgraded leaf pack? Thanks!

    • @ouroverlandlife5440
      @ouroverlandlife5440  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The rear leaf Pack is an OME Dakar Pack with the add a leaf. I think we're going to swap to a Deaver pack int he future though. The rear shocks are Elks 2.5DC series and fully adjustable and there are a set of DuroBump active bumpstops back there are well. It's a pretty dialed little setup for high speed and slower crawling.

  • @takenpictures
    @takenpictures 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That looks like my Reg Cab, except my mismatched shell is white. My dog and I sleep in the back, so I didn't want to order one that was color matched. Do you have any plans to regear it? I went with the 5.29's and put ARB locker front and rear. It's still slow, but feels SO much better. Running the same size as you, it went from about 2000rpm @ 65mph to 2500rpm @65mph. I really notice the difference off road and in 4 low.

    • @ouroverlandlife5440
      @ouroverlandlife5440  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      She's geared at 4:10 from the factory but we may go a bit lower once we add the ARD rear locker since we will be in there. Might not go 5:29 maybe just 4:88, but to be determined. Thanks for the feedback!

    Nice build I plan to buy a 4Runner and a Tacoma, I don’t plan to do any crazy off road stuff just soft road and camping. But it’s been a pain trying to buy a 4Runner the salesman’s men are horrible to deal with.

    • @ouroverlandlife5440

      That's why we primarily buy used. Private party direct to the person selling the rig. No sales people and its a Toyota. they just run and run with minimal problems.

    I've always wanted one of those. I almost bought one in 2014 before they discontinued them but they were super expensive! My main issue is that it didn't come with a v6. The 4.0 in that would be straight fire with a locker and Atrac. I eventually bought a 16 access cab instead. I'm happy but low key you are driving my dream truck lol. Wanna trade? 🤣🤣

    • @ouroverlandlife5440
      @ouroverlandlife5440  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOL. no trades but we may try to shoehorn a 4.7L in there one of these days! Maybe a 80 series front axle and really have some fun!

    • @alexgarcia3900
      @alexgarcia3900 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Our Overland Life that would be amazing, but I think the 4.0 would be slightly better considering the gas tank is smaller and it actually bolts right up. Either way it would be great 👍. Hope you end up doing it

    how do you like the 4wd dial instead of the manual shifter, I highly dislike it and anyone whos gonna purchase a Tacoma isnt doing it for the convenience factor. I wish they would have carried that over from the 1st gen series because its about the only thing on my 09 that I wish was different.

    • @ouroverlandlife5440
      @ouroverlandlife5440  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a pretty common complaint across the Toyota line. I suppose the only saving grace is we have never had one fail. I do prefer a manual gearbox and maybe someday she will get a twin stick T case. But for now it gets the job done, you just have to be fully stopped and have the clutch Fully engaged.

    I wish my truck was 4x4 because I would do this. Mines only 2wd, it’s a 2008 and I would love to take it off-road but I ain’t sure how it will do.

    • @ouroverlandlife5440
      @ouroverlandlife5440  ปีที่แล้ว

      Theres a lot of places a 4x2 will go. sand and mud is the biggest limiting factor. A rear locker and some clearance and tire size increase will get you a lot of places. If you have some good friends with 4x4's and tow straps will help too. Also airing your tires down will give you a bigger trac for traction. I mean. look at the baja race. Trophy trucks are frequently 4x2, then again they have 800hp and a ton of travel too! I grew up learning how to off road in 1985 4x2 S-10 pickup one wheel wonder on Arizona. I learned a lot about how to wheel with that truck and all it's limitations. Grab some friends, get some good recovery gear and get stuck. You will learn a lot just don't go out solo.
