I was in N.Y.C. for the previous 3 major Blackouts. In 1965 I was doing my homework in the Bronx, when the lights went out. In 1977 I was at home in Washington Heights when everything went black. In 2003 I had just boarded the Downtown Number 4 train at Yankee Stadium (the last stop above ground)! The doors closed and suddenly there was a thump, then nothing. Someone heard on a radio that there was a blackout. We didn't know at the time that it covered much of the Northeastern U.S.! We were able to pry one side of a door open, and everybody got out. I went straight to a store and bought up batteries and cold drinks (it was one of the hottest days of the year). If the outage had happened just a few minutes later, we would have been stuck underground overnight! Thank you for documenting this one!

I was really impressed that most people behaved and helped others out…but I hope that I never have to encounter another blackout ever again-we sure are spoiled with electricity !!
Hey Bodie you made history because a year later these pictures were no longer there you are doing a very good job which I appreciate that I've been looking at for a few years and to this day I prefer to look at the older pictures because of this difficult situation that has been going on for years I noticed personally that the last few years were simply the best. Look at all the people from the underground that were forced to surface and walk to their destination. Personally, I think it's rather interesting to observe how "normal people" react when one aspect of their life is removed. The subway or elevator are two places I wouldn't want to be when NYC loses power regardless of the duration. It's really amazing to see how calm all the curious people are during the electric grid disruption. If this outage would have lasted more than half a day, no doubt all chaos would ensue. Whats more amazing is this power outage comes 42 years to the day after the great blackout of 1977 when ALL of New York was in the dark. Lights or no lights, 👍🏼to all the people that are still drawn to Times Square! We ❤️ you NYC! Shoutout to Action Kid for this incredible insider view of "Manhattan in Mayhem".
Ak - Another great video. Who knew? You just take things as they come and go with the flow. For some people a power outage charges their battery (no pun intended here), and it's time to party, and for others, they just want to get where they're going. But, yeah, I can imagine people getting stuck on an elevator; especially if they're by themselves. What must be going through their mind? The thing about something like this is, all the fallout just has this trickle down affect, and whether it's a business or whatever, it takes them awhile before they get their marbles lined up again. Anyway, thanks for these very informative and at times entertaining videos. You're doing a great service for the city of NY and everyone who has the ability to watch them. Over and out.

@@ActionKid Think about it and do some investigating. 42nd street had half lit and half dark, (only street like that)? 42 years to the day that the outage in 1977 occurred, and I was told 42,000 lost power. Not coincidence obviously. I was told that these are only a few of the 42 references. Why 42 and what are the other ones?

I remember a power outage in NYC back when I lived there that was from The World Trade Center all the way to 42nd street. I had to walk in the pouring rain that entire distance to finally get to a subway with power at 42nd street. It sucked because all the buses and cabs were taken and the traffic lights were out so traffic got stuck all over the city. It was not a fun experience.
Down here in Panama City fl. we know about power outages. The hurricane last oct. I lost power for 3 almost 4 weeks. It was like a sauna. 70% of trees down. But NY with all the banks and elevators??? Being stuck in those would not be fun. Be safe Kenneth.

These kind of events show us how vulnerable we are ...
A little tip, if you find yourself without power and happen to be near a Starbucks, from my personal experience they will comp your coffee since most of them I have been at at least didn’t have back up power.
Two days before 4th of July part of Fort Lauderdale Beach has a power outage. And it affected the Resort I was in Fort Lauderdale. It was a day without power and it was very hot. And yesterday had power outage in a part of NW of Washington DC.

40 degrees Celsius. You are a great guide.
You need to get a solar recharger for your phone, one that you can clip to your backpack so your phone can continuously be charged as you walk around..
Thanks for the video Brother.
Wow! I could imagine how crazy that must have been.
In Nashville, we just grab some candles and hit the front porch.
Down here in Panama City fl. we know about power outages. The hurricane last oct. I lost power for 3 almost 4 weeks. It was like a sauna. 70% of trees down. But NY with all the banks and elevators??? Being stuck in those would not be fun. Be safe Kenneth.
Thank you for your wishes!
I heard there was a power outage over the weekend including the subway system as well!
so the LInkNYC kiosks AD screens are powered off the mains but the tablet part you use to call people with still works but displays some message
