      My Brooklyn-raised Grandfather used to mention Arthur Avenue. He moved out of NYC when kids appeared, citing he didn't want to raise his children "in the city". Well gosh, NYC would have been a great place to grow up, I'm sure you can attest to that.

    Loved walking down memory lane. I am from Arthur Avenue. I walked through those streets when I was a child with my mother. Looking at it now is bittersweet as my mom is no longer in a position to walk due to her health and a lot of the businesses have changed. It's been years since I been to Fordham Road.

    (1:58) The silver minivan backing up into a parking space reminded me of a scene from "A Bronx Tale" where Sunny is talking in the car to Colegio. The whole time he's driving backwards all the way down the street. The door test! LOL.

    Great video as usual. I learned about the food chain on Arthur Avenue in 1950 at the age of 5. A butcher shop my mother shopped at had a baby lamb tied up by the front door. The butcher would let me feed it from a milk bottle. I thought it was a pet. After a few weeks no lamb. I asked where it was? Butcher pointed to meat showcase!

      My grandparents had lived nearby on Camberling Ave. Many, many years ago there was a fish market that actually sold live fish like squid and eels! I remember when they brought them home, they would keep them in the bathtub full of water until cooking!! 😸

    I went to high school on Belmont Avenue.and my Dad and I would drive to the Madonnia Bakery every Sunday for Italian Bread and Italian cookies for my Mom!
    I hope you had at least a chance to stop for a "slice" (pizza) or for some Italian classic like Eggplant Parm from Mike's Deli (if it's still there). What a great place that not alot of people know about... Maybe I missed it but have you been to City Island...you used to be able to get there by bus on Fordham Road but it's been awhile since I lived in NY,.but either go soon or in the fall...as it is packed in the summer! Really great seafood restaurants ..it's like a New England fishing village you wouldn't know it's the Bronx!

      ActionKid These are truly hidden gems in the Bronx.. Can I make a suggestion ...this is a little different from what you do but on a really nice day take a walk through Woodlawn Cemetery...many many famous people are buried there...You used to be able to get a map of the famous gravesides at the gate house at the 233rd St entrance, such as LaGuardia, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, a famous Yankee..the name escapes me...the Woolworths have a masolieum that looks like a pyramid and the Helmsleys is up high and if you look directly through the window they you see the skyline of New York. In the summer they used to have concerts in the weekend .but it's been awhile since I left NY. I know it sounds a little creepy but it actually is beautiful and peaceful! Just a suggestion!

      @@theresemartin3075 - Re: "Woodlawn_Cemetery"
      Cemeteries with these names are indeed in the US like sand on the sea. To this special cemetery K. could make a plan. In Wikipedia (see bottom line), he finds a list of the notable celebrities are buried there. If he prepares accordingly, he can already choose a route which he then follows. It would be really interesting if he produces a narrated hiking video.

      i enjoyed reading your comments. My parents used to take me to The Arthur Avenue Market as a kid in the 1970’s, I hadn’t been back there in property 30 years and when I walked in, I started to cry sentimental tears. It had seemed so cavernous as a kid, I swore it was the same size as a football field! And here I was as an adult, the place seemed so small! I was amazed that this place of brick and mortar outlived my parents. It’s still something special. Best to you! 🐞

    Just viewed your video with Mary Jane presented in December 2019. Nice walking alongside you from my new home in "the South." Used to live in Westchester county but frequented Little Italy while taking college courses at Fordham and later during employment for decades after. Newcomer Albanians, Asians, and South Americans were smart, assimilating into the Italian enclave and 1 and All thrived. If your time and budget permits and you return, use a rental car or a Lyft or Uber, saw plenty of parking. And as you noted Fordham Road / Grand Concourse /Jerome Avenue are dangerous traffic zones for pedestrians as well as vehicles. Thanks ActionKood for the revisit and your good company.

      @@ActionKid Yeah since at least the last 100 years, BTW, in the banking / mortgage and insurance auto and property liability underwriting, Fordham Road was the "red line" for premium costs. If you were located in or drove mostly north the bill was less than if you were south of the line. Not at all fair but just the way it was, it seemed in the old days that there were more accidents and criminal incidents on the south side below Fordham. Your video shows that thats still the same as always, you nearly were run over or witnessed reckless chance taking by motorists several times in that half hour.

    First, a small correction: the building referred to as part of Fordham U. at 13:35 in is Theodore Roosevelt High School. It was the local H.S. for two generations of my family and also the four members of "Dion and the Belmonts".
    Really enjoyed this and other videos on your channel. I had my first taste of squid at Mario's Restaurant in 1970. The front of the Arthur Avenue Retail Market appears behind the opening credits of the film "Marty". Other scenes were filmed on Fordham Road as well as the Grand Concourse.
    More recently, "A Bronx Tale" was based on this neighborhood but was not filmed there.
    I saw then Senator John F. Kennedy give a campaign speech as Fordham and the Concourse.

      I am not far from the Arthur Ave neighborhood (we have never called it "Little Italy" - either "Arthur Ave" or "Belmont"). My grandparents and aunts lived there through the end of the 1970s. It is so much smaller today than decades ago! Have actually been to Boston's North End more times in the past few years! The North End is one of the last real Italian-American neighborhoods left in the US. So much larger than both NYC's "Little Italies" combined! Sure, San Francisco has North Beach (their "Little Italy") but the North End is the most authentic!

    Lived there in the 1970's. The Albanian community had a fearsome reputation for vendettas brought over from Yugoslavia (today's North Macedonia and Kosovo). Back then there were Italian-Americans and Italian-Italians. The classic 1955 film "Marty" takes place in the community. Fordham University's campus is in many movies, TV shows and commercials.

      Actually, Albanians are the dominant ethnic group there today. There are now some Albanian shops and restaurants clustered nearby, which led the NY Times to refer to as "Little Albania"!

    Attended a Business College that was conveniently located above my workplace Sterling Optical IPCO. Loved Chinese crabsticks for quick bite, there were Gyros too back then.

    I notice that on several videos you actually either cross over the road or mute the audio to avoid copyright. You are not playing the music yourself so copyright infringement should not be a problem. It certainly would not be here in the U.K

    • @ActionKid
      @ActionKid  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, it all depends on the scene and if the music adds value. Regardless, it often times isn’t worth the hassle of dealing with the claims so I just avoid it altogether.

    There used to be an Alexander’s department store all the way y up the hill on Fordham Road before Jerome Ave! Wow 😮 those were the days!!!♥️

    • @larrycj4382
      @larrycj4382 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! Part of the Bronx memories! It was a massive store! I remember the "Thursday Thrillers" sales as a little kid waiting with my Mom on line for the store to open! 😸
      It closed along with the other remaining Alexanders stores in 1992. It was replaced by another chain department store, Caldor, which lasted until 1999. Today, the site has been subdivided to accommodate smaller stores such as Marshall's.
